  • Could this be the strategy that ends Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine?
Michael Clarke outlines three 'paths to victory' for Ukraine's counteroffensive. Route one would end in the 'bombardment of Crimea,' if Ukraine is able to break through traps laid by Surovokin.

Except of course that there is absolutely no prospect of Ukraine having the volume of air power required to take out both the Russian air force and Russian air defenses. Even Russia can't operate aircraft properly. So unless you're going to lend Ukraine about half the USAF, there is no prospect of any air power given to Ukraine being capable of granting Ukraine "air cover" as NATO would understand it.

Yes, but there are Trumpist noises among Republicans trying to stop weapons going to Ukraine at all and that makes another very subversive Republican element seem very reasonable and moderate. They are saying that Trumpist extremists are being etc., etc,. stc., ..... but Ukraine may have to "be realistic, reasonable and moderate" and give up on Crimea. From a political point of view, this makes Crimea the FIRST objective. As it happens, success in Crimea would, not only head off the Trumpists, but also, seriously weaken the Russian Black Sea fleet and make Odessa and Mikolaiv far safer. Just about everything launched against Odessa has come from the Black Sea Fleet and Crimea.

Don't think for a moment Russia will be satisfied with 20%. They want it all. And once the West shows weakness by letting Russia take Ukraine, they will make plans to take the other former Soviet republics. Russia is right now teaching new generations a new version of history and teaching them the 'real' position of Russia. A kind of Hitlerjugend, this time it might be Putinjugend, or something like that. I don't think the West understands it. Russia might come out of the war weakened for some time, but they want their superpower status back, and a grip on at least the former Eastern Block, if not more. Ukraine has been supplied with modern accurate artillery and Himars with a range up to 50 miles both of which can have their strikes guided by satellite or drone intelligence. What is it about F16 that will make it more effective in clearing the 10 miles in front of the Ukrainians to allow them to move up unimpeded?
For the F16 to strike deeper than what Ukraine has it would have to approach or cross the front lines and thereby become a target for the Russian air defence. They would be shot down. I think America knows this and that is why they are reluctant to supply.

The West needs to be hammering russia with more sanctions. It needs to relentlessly pursue/close loopholes in the sanctions and identify and sanction countries that are deliberately circumventing the sanctions to assist russia. The West has extremely high expectations on Ukraine being successful in its counteroffensive, but it has a critical role to play now as well. The only way Ukraine will win the war is through a one-two punch of military victory combined with debilitating sanctions that shuts down russia's economy.

There are a lot of alternatives to russia rare earth materials (and china for that matter), but they need to be developed. Prior to the war in Ukraine there was little incentive to develop alternatives because russia and china offered them to the market at costs that were low enough to stifle any competition. These continued to be effective even when it was obvious where the real offensive was, being able to pass the real offensive as a diversion for some days. Thank you, Michael Clark. I always enjoy your detailed analysis. Cutting off Crimea is really the game. I am always looking for hope for Ukraine.
Sadly, whatever happens is going to be brutal for advancing Ukrainian troops. They are really motivated, excellent fighters with some great modern kit. The lack of air superiority is really problematic, though.
When you are up against heavily dug in positions and minefields in depth, you really need massive airstrikes to soften these positions up. Think B-52s in Iraq and the entire western front during the Allied advance in Europe during WW2. A stick of 1,000 lb. bombs can open a lot of minefields. SAM suppression is critical. Crossing all that open ground against drone-guided strikes, precision artillery and antitank is going to be a nightmare. Even the best tanks. won't survive top-down attacks.
Without this Ukraine is going to need a massive supply of long range munitions to fill the gap. Having the lack of this support,
they will need the same fortitude as the U.S. 1st Division on Omaha Beach. They faced a wide-open beach, incredible defensive fire, obstacles and losses. Despite this each individual soldier found the strength to get off the beach. If anyone can pull this off against the Russians it's the Ukrainians.
I wish we had given them everything they needed 6 months. ago.

The only useful aid that the Americans accepted off the British for D-Day was the Bangalore torpedo to blow holes through barbed wire entanglement and mines. The American attitude of “the most powerful thing on the battlefield is a GI with a rifle “ was the reason why they struggled on Omaha beach. The idea that the Germans had pillboxes on the beach like in Saving Private Ryan is a myth. They were hundreds of yards behind the beach.

Ask yourself why the Russians are not using carpet bombing? Surely they can see where the Ukranians are, and they can send air power to carpet bomb everything, is it because of the special military operation and not in open war preventing them from doing so?
Is it because they don't want t be seen as the Nazis or what the Americans did in Vietnam?

Not really, I notice he supports the western false narrative on Crimea. He didn't bring up the topic of Putin using tactical battlefield nukes, and Putin ain't bluffing He will defend Russia's right to defend their territory, Crimea is Russia whether Biden wants to accept it or not. It was actually the communists who unlawfully handed it to SSR Ukraine post 1917

Western support for Ukraine must hold as long as it takes. WWII went as long as it did until the defeat of the Nazis had come about.

    • @michaelmullins3396

The defeat of the Nazis in ww11 only came about with the help of USSR, its not fighting russia the west should be doing ,but going down on its knees thanking Russia for their help during Ww11 . If Clarke was an honest man he would be telling that to the viewers , not spreading Propaganda as he does.

I can't really see Western support declining in the way that Prof. Clarke describes (should Ukraine not make the sort of progress that we would all like to see). For the simple reason that we haven't really got any alternative other than to have Ukraine win this war. We simply don't have the luxury of letting Russia get away with things as in 2014. We all know what happened 8 years later in 2022.
Now some people may think that we have a choice and we can pull our support or reduce it. But that is simply kicking the can down the road and it will be coming back in our direction once again few years later but will be much worse (2014->2022 all over again, but worse). It's pie-in-the-sky thinking to imagine that we are able to walk away from this without the result being far worse for us in the medium term... leave alone the long term.
Ukraine simply isn't enough for Russia. Give Russia a victory (or a pause) in the next 2 years and those in power will be plotting retaking many of the former Warsaw Pact countries into Russia's "sphere of influence" (aka de-facto control).
Some very naively think that NATO "will defend us" from whatever Russia does next should Ukraine be allowed to go down the tubes. But with hybrid warfare - which Russia is very good at - Russia will soon be dug in like a tick trying to mould German public opinion, disrupting civil society wherever possible in Central Europe and so on. And now with far more weight in the world (particularly China, India and the "Global South") as a result of a victory in Ukraine over the entire "Collective West". It will try to break NATO from within. Germany will be high up on Russia's shopping list of countries to disrupt... second only, I think, to the United States itself. If Trump gets back into office, this is fertile ground for the Russia clandestine services to operate on.
The West and our "International Order" would not survive this. And, to be frank, if we have made such a hash of all this in Ukraine, it won't deserve to survive at all.
So no... come what may... we have to step up and see this through. Later this year... when Western politicians are deciding what they do next...I'm pretty sure that all of this will be pretty obvious to them. Pulling support of Ukraine would split the West. It would certainly split Europe if the major European powers went along with this. And that is something that Europe couldn't possibly afford.

@@joepublic8473 Hmmm. I think the statement about too little too late is probably fairly accurate in terms of air support. As he clearly states, had we arranged air support from teh start, they would now have access to all the F16's with trained pilots. Your point isn't really valid.
