  • In 2019, Cecilia Nation-Gardner was in the right place when a 6-year-old boy needed help. A driver with the Milwaukee County Transit System, Nation-Gardner risked her own safety by running into traffic to help a child who had wandered away from school and right into a busy intersection.

He sounds like what we call "a runner". I was out on the playground with my K5 class when I saw a 5th grader walking from the back entrance towards our parking lot. He had been sent to the principal's office earlier on, and was sent back to class to fetch his bookbag. He decided to grab his bookbag from class and sneak out before making it to our principal's office. Thank God, some teachers were able to get to him before he crossed the street!

The little boy was difficult for her to communicate with. She learned later he was autistic and only 6. A short time later she stopped and saved ANOTHER 6 year old who was trying to get to Georgia to see her momma and had been standing on the median in traffic. She hadn't even been a bus driver for a year when she saved these kids!Cecilia was nominated for an award for Black Excellence in 2019. Imo, she should have won. In the days of Gofundme for everything, she'd be financially set enough to at least take a vacation. BTW the award for Black Excellence isn't a racist thing, a black organization awards those who exemplify excellence and make their community proud for their accomplishments. And obviously it's necessary since she should have been recognized for this by more than just the black community.
