    Jesse, I'm a shotokan karate Black belt from Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil and I'm really enjoying your videos about the roots of Karate in Okinawa. Learning a lot!
    I'd been not training for 5 years... It happened because a knee serious enjure and surgery but you had motivated me some moths ago with you videos and now I'm back to karate lessons!
    thank you very much And sorry about my English.

    Thanks for this series, Jesse. It motivates me even more to move further in my training in karate. I really like your perception on the different styles of karate. although they may be different, they are still under one family. Thanks for being an inspiration for us young cats. Be blessed. Osu!

    Whoa this is an eye opener. A long time ago when I was in community college, I had a teacher who also a high ranking Shorin-ryu practitioner. He introduced Shorin-ryu to some students, such as myself. Most notably, I remember learning Naihanchi Shodan, but also these animal techniques! I had no idea they came from Uechi-ryu but it goes to show that this philosophy of not limiting one's karate to style purity is known. Keep up the great karate content!

    Another amazing episode, Jesse. I was really glad you covered this Uechi Ryu dojo. Kiyohide Shinjo sensei is a beast. I think the fact you weren't allowed to film your training proves how legit it is! I love Uechi Ryu because it is so similar to the Chinese style of chuan fa I practice. I can't help but think they are somewhat of sister styles.

    Ooooo!! Kyohide Shinjo Sensei. The Uechi-ryu Superman. The 9th time Uechi-ryu Karate champ. His father was Seiyo Shinjo a direct student of Kanbun Uechi.
    Seiyo Shinjo taught Karate from 6:00pm till 10:00pm everyday except sundays. He worked construction on the side but quit to focus more on karate. Thus subjugating himself to a life of poverty but he forged his Karate legacy from that sacrifice.
    It's a shame he died so young from diabetes. Rest in Peace Seiyo Shinjo. 🙏🙏

    Don't worry that you couldn't film in the dojo. I really respect the fact that the dojo was very intimate and the sensei wanted to keep things about karate and not filming. Like you said, you were there to train. Any little things that we see and hear you talk about are a massive bonus for us!

  • @CwGuitar01
    @CwGuitar01 5 лет назад +7

    Sensei, I know you don’t worry about style in your own training but it would be great if you could do a video summarising some of the history, influences and differences between different styles of karate. For example what separates styles such as shotokan, shito-ryu, shorin-Ryu and wado-ryu. I train shotokan and I know that there are certainly differences and some styles such as wado train katas which we generally do not in shotokan but are there fundamental differences in execution in techniques? etc. Thanks 🙏

    i practised many styles, few to black belt and brown belt. I was very fortunate to have grandmaster who was open-minded, he also practised many styles from serious masters. I love learning the foundation of different styles and more in-depth in others.

    UECHI! I started learning Uechi-Ryu 11 months ago.
    The kicks hurt less if you lean into them. Lean away from it (natural instinct like you said) and it'll hurt like a sonofabitch. I found out the hard way.
    I don't mind being kicked. But I hate kicking other people because I don't trust my lower body to do anything precise (it'll come). I'm terrified I'll hit my partner in the crotch or in the knee. Two things that really can't be conditioned.

    The story with the samurai....the Chinese didn't have makiwara, but they had LOTS of wooden dummies, including ones that were just basic round logs sticking out of the ground they would strike. Isn't more believable that the Okinawans took the idea of the wooden dummies (especially the basic ones seen in Southern China) and evolved that into the makiwara?

    • @KARATEbyJesse
      @KARATEbyJesse  2 года назад +5
