Doggy poop bag is what we use for our sparkling batter bags, received this tip 10 yrs. ago from a retired painter. Great to see these trade tips are being spread to everyone. As a professional I do not fear DIY, I Truly encourage it!
Wow Chris, great tips, I have painted for 30 years, and until now for the last 20 years I thought I new everything. Guess I was getting stale, thanks for waking me up. Over the last year watching your channel I have got faster and better.
Certified painter here with 24 years in the field. Sometimes I think, hey man, don't tell all of our secrets, people won't call painters anymore if they learn how to paint. Don't ruin the business :D Great tips. Small details matter to make the job easier and faster. I appreciate the video, and I know that it takes years to master some of the techniques in painting so we should still get phone calls for work :D
Hey Buddy first off I just want to say how much I enjoy your videos I'm 60yrs old I painted for 45 of them everything from high dollar commercial bldgs to $3mill custom homes to $200 & less apts it didn't matter we did it all I thought I knew a lot of tricks and I did but you never cease to amaze me....High Five Buddy
I've been using hooks on my brushes for a couple years now, I also bend them out just a little to keep the bristles from bending in the bucket. It also is helpful to allow the brush to drip dry before putting it away in the sleeve.
I don't even paint and absolutely hate painting but watch your videos its just really satisfying and life is so much easier when doing anything if you have the right tools
Some good hacks. Thanks for sharing. Don't need brush bag. I've used TIN FOIL for 40 yrs to wrap wet brushes and works great, inexpensive and disposable. Wrap and fold over bristles at top and mold tight over handle a little for a good seal. Replace as needed. I prefer heavy duty. To improve wetness and easy carry I recommend Purdy's wet bag. Put the bag with the brushes or just the brush in the foil in the refrigerator after work if you'll be using it next day. I can keep a brush open for 3-4 days this method. Any longer I recommend cleaning even if you are still working the same color. I also wrap clean release painters tape around the ferrule and over the heel of the bristles. I cover all the metal. When time to clean peel toward bristles. This will help to block paint from getting into the ferrule which is what stiffens a brush over time and ruins it, and also makes cleaning easier. I have brushes that were handed down from my father who was a painter too who taught me these things that are still in very good shape and still in use.
Great tips. I’ve always wondered what the deal was with the spray hose whip. I’ve got to try the cup holder for the brush and bucket. Nothing more maddening than dropping the brush in the bucket. Thanks Chris!
Really liked the patching in the zip lock bag,but actually most impressed by holding the roll of tape on your wrist so simple and obvious but apparently not to me. Great video.
This is all brilliant. I'm a DIYer, and on one hand, this will help me do a better job (even though it won't be perfect), and on the other hand it helps me appreciate what to expect, and why to pay for a professional, when it really matters.
Thanks for all the helpful videos and has made pairing a whole lot easier ! Watched your rolling walls video by over lapping 50 percent and keeping edges wet and moving along the wall and twisting the roller after loading up with paint.
I'm happy to see a ringer who organizes brushes like I do. Question: I stripped & painted my kitchen cupboards last summer, why do the items in them still [lightly] stick to the shelves ? Keep the great videos coming !
Take care of them and clean well and even mid quality brushes and rollers will last a long time. I have some brushes and rollers I've used for 4 or 5 yeara
Would have liked to see the corner plus roller in action, others have tried similar ideas with a pad that fits on the end of a sleeve but it never took off.
I have been painting professionally for 5 years and i have to say, you guys are doing to right. I love the tips and tricks and i’ve learned a lot for you guys. Thank you. Keep up the great work fellas. Your friend from Northern Michigan, Michael. 😎
Great tips! I got one more. I noticed you keep the tape on your forearm while doing a taping task. Great idea, I’m always picking up and putting down (and losing) my tape. Definitely going to try that one...
If cut a white ceeling with flat white using a corner brush, then roll my ceeling Then cut my white walls with white eggshell, then roll e.t.c will there be a demarcation at the top of my walls from the ceeling cut that was made with the corner brush ? can you answer aswell in the context of adding colors instead of white. thank you:)
Good video!!! I’ve noticed your speech is getting better. Not to say it was bad but you’re more concise and appear to be more comfortable opposed to when you first started. Keep up the good work learn a lot. LUV IT!!!
I found your channel through suggested videos. First I’d like to say I find your videos very captivating. I just started a You Tube channel so I have a lot to learn from channels like yours. Please keep it up! Just subbed!
Chris, still using your videos as a primary video training tool for our painting class for our Facilities Maintenance Technician Training Program. Tell Graco that based in large part to your videos we purchases a Graco Magnum Pro X19. It just came in. I have the class building two simulated training walls on castors so we can move them around. I'll also be using the brown paper rolls for paining practice so we don't have to wait for paint to dry between student attempts. The wall simulators will also let me teach patching, plumbing, and basic electrical maintenance techniques all using the same simulator. I would ask that you use more PPE. I know you've been doing this a long time but good safety is still good safety and I want my people to practice appropriate safety practices. Keep up the good work.
Another tip if you plan on using your brush for latex paint again.... wet your brush with water before you start painting. (obviously shake the water off before you dip it in the paint.)
You have mentioned before that it is best to paint ceilings flat. When using the corner roller to take care of cut ins on the ceiling, do you go back and cut in the walls with the satin/semigloss/etc? Or do you just get close and call it good if it is the same color?
Can you recommend a particular brush for me? My situation is that I am painting a flipper house for my dad and while I’ve done some painting in my life I’m not great at ceiling edging and my brush is so stiff and crappy that it hurts my hand to edge with it. I’m wondering if a softer bristle brush could help me not to have to much hand fatigue..? Or maybe the brush I saw you mention in another video that has a flexible handle that allows you to bend it..?
Hi there, luv your channel. Recently had a knee injury. Getting on ladders to cut a color on a wall where it meets the ceiling is not possible yet. Any hacks for getting it done from the floor with an extension pole?
Thanks Chris for the hacks! I have a job coming up. My customer wants to paint her wood trim white but not the doors (doors and jambs are also natural wood through the whole house I told her my honest opinion to not paint the door trim . But she want the baseboard painted white ( which butts up to the door trim). I’m in a dilemma. She is a long time customer should I tell her if she wants me to paint any of the trim she needs to paint all the natural wood or should I tell her That she should leave all trim alone unless she wants to paint everything. Or is my opinion just wrong and I should do wha she wants???
I might have to use the spackle trick tomorrow, mainly to keep from toteing around the spackle can. definitely my least favorite part of painting is filling nail holes in trim. thanks for videos as always.
Love your stuff man. I'm a painter/ carpenter. Bro I applied so many things I have learned from you. Made my boss take note. Got me a $.. what your cut? Just kidding I got 6 boys we need penny.. ty for putting all this out.
Any tips for painting old mobile home walls with wood paneling? My husband recently lost his job and we are moving into a smaller place. I wanted to paint the walls to make it look a bit nicer. Thanks!
How well does two gallons of the same exact color paint match when getting it from like a Home Depot? I just painted an area and underestimated the amount of needed paint and need some more. If I go buy the same color again, will it match or will it be noticeable? Any tips for this type of situation?

Mr. Idaho Painter, I really like your videos, and you've taught this old dog some new tricks., and now I need help fixing a problem that I haven't ever encountered until now: Four years ago I painted all of the interior walls and ceilings in a duplex I own, and now I’m seeing discoloration in the surface coat. I covered every square in with 2 coats of KILZ and then 2 coats of Valspar Signature for the top coat. If KILZ is a stain blocker, how can I be getting stains ? Thank you in advance.
Love your videos and love your tips and tricks especially the one on getting sharp lines with tape and caulking that was super and help me out on a job
As a remodeler, I can't believe those cup hooks don't get in the way when you want to reverse the brush? ( I do have a love affair with rare Earth magnets tho...) Hinge pins: I don't remove them to grease, as you did in the other video, I just pop them up partway and shoot them with dry lube and a paper shield.

Holy cow!...... A younger version of John malkovich with awesome paint tips and hacks!!! Thanks dude! :D
Yo Chris ditch the brush hooks and mount small magnents to your cut buckets. Much like the red purdy cut and mini roller buckets.
Really liked the patching in the zip lock bag,but actually most impressed by holding the roll of tape on your wrist so simple and obvious but apparently not to me. Great video.
My hands are to big to fit a roll of tape around them 😪.

If you go to the Idaho painter RUclips page you'll find videos where he's using the corner + roller. Believe it or not it does work I've tried it.

Pro tips! The only thing I do different is when I catch dust I run the paper in a “u” shape. No tack tape needed but your method is super clean!
Good tip
