I spoke to my sofer when he told me that he couldn't do anything about my non-kosher tefillin, and he said that he always corrects them whenever he checks at no extra charge unless he can't fix it.

Dakos are hard to fix but it's what I can afford. The knots are a matter of minhag. I retie the shel rosh knot it always comes back with a single daled.

40 seconds in, he said that he doesn't. I know someone who's parents couldn't have children for many years, the Rebbe kept on telling them to check the tefillin, and each time, they were fine. Eventually they went to another Sofer, who found it was missing, iirc, 'peter' in peter kol rechem.

the Rebbe doesn't guess, if he says it, then they needed to be checked.
