I always just pruned down each stalk to the nearest double leaf growth. Was never sure if it was right but after watching this I see that is essentially what you're doing as well. Good to know!
Lantana is everywhere in Central Texas during the summer months, but most of it dies back in the winter (coastal Texas probably has better luck treating them as perennials). I would imagine in the Zone 9a/b and 10a areas of Arizona that Lantana may survive the winters there.
Yeah it will come back from light freezes. Anything below 25 or so will kill the lantana. I grew mine in Arizona and had a few days in January in the high 20s and they came back fine. Some years I lost some top branches. Good luck! Thanks for watching
It depends on summer temperatures, irrigation, and soil nutrients. I would recommend putting them in the ground. Potted plants require a lot of management
We have lantana ground cover, a LOT of them. I am wondering how to prune them? They get kind of woody branches in the middle. Do I trim them after they flower?
Does your lantana lose their leaves in fall winter? I have never realized you could get them this big! I have always just cut the what I think is dead wood back to the ground.
The trick is to cut them back heavily in the winter to a ball of sticks about the size of a soccer ball. This makes the plants very thick. I fertilize with pond water once a month or so and about once a month i go around with pruning shears to keep them from getting too out of control. If you keep cutting them back they keep getting thicker and thicker. Dont be afraid to cut off flowers. It seems that for each flower I cut off I get 10x as many in their place. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Which variety of Lantana were you pruning? It looks like "Hot Blooded" in terms of color and the fact that I didn't see any berries on the plant (of course, you might have been pruning those off).
@@thechaosgardener Well, we will find out as we planted several "Hot Blooded" in our front yard to replace some Coral Drift roses that for the 2nd year in the row exhibited more Black Spot than I care to deal with here in Central Texas. It is going to be a bold display for the neighborhood if it's the same Lantana. :)
Check your local plant store. My lantana are triploidy hybrids that dont produce viable seed. They can only be propagated by cloning. Home Depot sells them but I am guessing the plant stores probably have other names in Vietnam.
@@thechaosgardener Yes, Vietnam also sell some types of lantana, but your type of lantana made me impressed by great color. Because vietnam is very far from you, so i only buy seeds and hope them to be grown. i searched seeds on some channel such as Amazon, but it is out of stock. your flower is very greate.
What do i do if mine is spreading all over my flowerbed? I want it to be tall and wide like yours not to just spread and leave no space for new plants.
My variety is a fruitless hybrid and doesn't produce fruit so I dont really have problems of having it sprouting any volunteers. I think the easiest way to keep it tall is pruning hard in the early spring and summer so that the bush has thick branches that can withstand the weight of the branches as it grows. Every winter I cut mine down to a soccerball sized sphere of sticks.
Mine all get south facing sun in the southern Arizona summer. The problem is that if the lantana is acclimated to a north facing area you need to cut it back or transplant during a dormant period. Be sure to get as much roots as you can so it doesn’t die and cut it back so it has time to reestablish roots before it’s overwhelmed by too much vegetation. (Green loses tons of water in the sun)
@@thechaosgardener Thank you! Does it make sense to wait for warmer weather as the north side gets for more Sun ? The plants are totally dormant now. Whats the right fertilizer to jumpstart their growth?
Sorry just saw your response. Not sure why I didn’t get a notification. I like to use half a bag of cow manure under each of my Lantana to give them amazing flowers and thick growth. I always prune after the shoots have a couple nodes to make them branch out and get a thick cover. Usually a month after bud break.
that is bad advice, meristems are responsible for growth in a plant, i followed your advice and my lantana stopped blooming, please give reputable plant advice
Assuming you’re being serious and not trolling. Be sure to watch the entire video. Watch my other lantana videos to see if mine have flowers. Apical meristems are being cut. Cutting apical meristems induces branching which causes the plant to develop lateral meristems (branches) below the cut. Every time I pruned mine I got twice as many flowers within a few days. If you’re stopped blooming something else is wrong like too much water or not enough fertilizer.
I don’t think it will survive the winter in zone 5b unless you use a lot of mulch. If you cover and mulch the roots to keep them deeper than the frost line, or the level at which the ground freezes you might be ok. If the roots freeze the plant will die.
I’m in zone 6 and have been planting Lantana for years. I’ve never had it come back unfortunately so we just budget for it along with other annuals each growing season. It does last all Summer so that’s a plus.

Hi. Any tips on growing a Lantana tree? I’m planting one in my home in Miami. I’m not sure how tall it will grow to.
Prune to a vertical trunk for the first year to get a strong central leader. Prune about once a month to train it. Think bonsai
That's actually like, really cool.😂 I would never think to do that.😂
thank you for the support!
Question, We live in NYC and the winters get cold about 32-29 degrees. Will my lantana come back in the spring ? Thanks for your video.

that's amazing... Can lantana plant be so bushy in pots also?
if yes..how..?

Yes! I cut them down to the ground every year. If I didn’t trim them every few weeks they would be 6 feet tall. They thrive in the Arizona sun.
@@thechaosgardener I live in Texas. They have never gotten that tall😞. Maybe 3 ft. Thanks for the info.
Aha!!! And here I just thought my lantana hated me and where I planted it.
Hi! How do you make your Lantana round? Mine has plenty of blooms, but they are scattered. Do you also know how to make them into topiary, please? 🌺🌼🌸

About how wide is that plant? And how wide does it get? Thanks
If I didn’t prune it would have gotten huge. I pruned it to probably a couple feet wide. The stem was about an inch wide.
Which variety of Lantana were you pruning? It looks like "Hot Blooded" in terms of color and the fact that I didn't see any berries on the plant (of course, you might have been pruning those off).
Yeah the red were a fruitless hybrid but I cannot remember the variety, so you’re probably right

Do I deadhead the older flowers that have died off?
Yes
In the very beginning how many plants did you start with to end up with the bush??
Each bush is just one plant. They are 5 years old now. I trained them (pruned) back with a trunk. Kinda like how bonsai tree artists make their bonsai
Love lantana!!!! #plantlife
Thanks!
