Rory saying that sort of thing about Ange is exactly why I disregard his opinion now. Also his Brighton comments. Pure arrogance to get clicks. It’s really sad
I think what this win showed is what Spurs can be when they click. City were missing a few players but so were Spurs. Tactically Ange got it spot on, the players executed the plan to perfection. I cant think of any other Spurs coach in recent years who would go to the Etihad and not just shut up shop and try to nick a goal but take the game to City, stand up to them and beat City and keep a clean sheet. The key now is consistency, he has to figure out how to beat those sides that sit in, low block and make the game more attritional. If he can do that this Spurs side, under Ange, will get success.
Lets not forget earlier this season when arsenal went there with one or two injuries and parked the bus for 90 minutes desperately defending. Spurs go there missing their main cdm Bentacur & two main centre backs but still play to win.
I will be the first to admit Spurs have been inconsistent. Before the break Spurs lost to Ipswich and two weeks later smash Man City with an under-strength team. My reasoning for this is not Ange's game plan but the players inability to implement the game plan. Maddison was a superstar but has been MIA for most of the season. If Ange can get this level of performance from the team every week until seasons end, I have no doubt Spurs will finish the season in the top 4 and a trophy.
This idea that madders has been MIA this year is absolute rubbish. It's been a different role for him this year because he's had to play a bit deeper with deki also playing 10. He's got 5 goals and 4 assists in 9 starts I think.
Agree, you don't wipe City off their own field if the game plans are wrong. There are a host of fragile players still at Spurs, and then a lot of young ones learning what being great means. You don't beat City and then lose to the likes of Palace and Ipswich because of the coach. Players who can't stay locked in lose those games.
The inconsistency is so frustrating but I think part of the problem is Ange has to figure out a way to beat those sides that will just sit in and play with a low block and deliberately disrupt Spurs rhythm. I love Son, been amazing for us, but I'm not sure the best way to beat these sort of teams is to play him and Johnson who both like to run into exposed spaces that you don't get against a low block If Ange can just get this figured out and the players can execute it then I'm certain Spurs will get success.
Honestly watch the way the team plays against “lower” ranked clubs on the table. They legit play like it’s pre season & you can see them space out thinking they can just cruise through cos our team is technically more talented. - it’s always lack lustre against “lower” teams.
I`ts all ridiculous. Ange out one week and now he`s a genious. Now Pep is under scrutiny. History doesn`t matter, only your last game. You can`t always blame the manager when players don`t give their all. Spurs need more competition in position, so the players now they have to give a 100 percent. I support Ange
The goal difference is proving Ange is on the right track, the team isn't far from going on a run, it just needs a better plan to solve the play against the weaker teams counter attacks with the high line.
People say it was counter attacking football. No, Ange actually used what he saw in Pep's previous games. Because Kovacic and Rodri are out, they don't have a defensive cover that they usually do. He did this in the second half in sporting and his team self destructed against sporting. Pep mainly uses his holding midfielders as counter breakers and the team's reference point. His holding midfielder is the one that dictates the team's structure and their build up play. However, when he has Rico Lewis and Gundogan in these holding positions, it becomes self destructive. On the counter against spurs, Rico Lewis was almost not in position because he's too busy trying to find space to be the open man. And with Rodri and Kovacic, he can do this because those two serve as the reference point and the counter breaker. However, because he did this in the Spurs game, it left Gundogan as the holding midfielder, a position he's really unfamiliar with and quite uncomfortable with. City's main worry rn is that they don't have a reference point in a holding midfielder. No Kovacic and Rodri leaves the defense vulnerable with no real cover. It also means the usual offensive players drift into defensive positions which they are uncomfortable and unfamiliar with. I was actually surprised he put Gundogan there when the lineups came up. Stones would've done a better job as a dm with Gundogan as an attacking mid. As good as Spurs were, City were set up for failure by Pep from the start. The system was severely flawed and I guess you can say I'm saying this with hindsight but when I first saw it, I thought maybe Spurs do have a chance. Didn't think it would be 4-0 though.
