Linus from 2021:
8K Gaming is Dumb, 4K 144Hz is the way to go
100% true. Obviously both resolution and frames diminish in importance as they keep getting higher. But I have a 55" 4K 120hz LG OLED tv, and there's absolutely a difference. I play at 1440p, but when cards deliver 4K 80-90 fps via HDMI 2.1, that will be the "high bar" and it will make a difference.
Previously, I had a 27" 60 hz monitor and went to a 1440p 144hz. Worth it, but I definitely missed the 4K crispiness -- even on 27 inches.
He never said it'll never happen or that tech will never change, but it's pretty clear that at present, the resources required to game at that resolution do not net solid returns. And honestly, with the way things are going on PC, they seem to be pushing more towards ultrawide and superultrawide setups and scaling the resolution with that, rather than just sitting on a 16:9 27" that really don't do it justice. As example, gaming at nearly 4K on a CRG9 is a much better experience.
I mean he already did a video on 16K

The world's biggest hypocrite and it shows over the past year just doing anything to try to stay relevant.
In 2024 (6 years since the launch of this video), 4K120 is pretty easy to come by on high-end PCs, although 1080p monitors at 144 and 165hz are also dirt cheap. 1440p is still a solid middle ground for a somewhat competitive experience.

It seems like 4K is going to matter a lot more on my 50"+ TV screen than it will on my 23" PC monitor.
Because that's what it was originally intended for, big ass screens. People started noticing that around 45 inces 1080p was looking more like 720p. I remember hearing about 6 years ago that 4k was created for movie screens. I guess so we can have true HD for them. 4k is a joke though, unless you rent alot of DVD's. They only send 720p signals to tv's. Hell, they're just now starting to broadcast 1080p(only for pay per views, but it's a start). I'll only get one when they start being used for actual t.v lol. I barely even buy dvd's anymore, I just pirate everything, and it's all 720p - 1080p anyway. A nice 32 - 40 inch monitor is good enough for me. So 4k really is irrelevant for me.
@Eclipse538 LOL HUH
#GamingTV
Exactly! Tech simply hasn't caught up to 4k yet. It's been rushed out just like 1080p was. 1080p has really just became an actual "thing" like 3 years ago. Like 1080p is finally able to be implemented properly. Internet speeds have just been adjusted to handle 1080p and storage too. Only the government has everything needed to run 4k properly. It wont be released to the public for a few years. The government is probably using 8k right now and 4k is old to them lol. 1TB of storage has just now become a reasonable price. That's like 4 or 5 4K game downloads smh. Don't get me started on the download times. Even with super DSL it's still a pain.
depends on distance. More important is the field of view. If your display occupies large part of you FOV, then 4k matters.
@@THIZZAVELI tbh i got two 27inch monitors, a 1440p and a 4k, and i barely see any difference. The only difference i see is that the 4k one is less smooth since it taxes more my pc.

I really like OLED, as it's undefeated, but I also miss the clarity and pixel density of 4K 144hz at 27".
Yes, the LG C2 42" is OLED and 4K, but it has the same PPI as the Alienware QD-OLED. And it requires a larger desk than I have to be comfortable. In short, given the rapid decline in 4K high refresh panels and the 1440p OLED UW panels along with the LG OLED TVs that are faster than all or most monitors, we need a video.

Construction Complete.
I totally second that take on Writing in 4k. It's a much more pleasing experience. I write for a living and I don't regret treating myself to a 4k@60Hz display.
Linus! You need to to make another version of this video for console players, who have large TV's and have to decide between xbox series x and series s
And people want 4k for phones where it will reduce battery life...
Alex Disibio there's newer tech that reduces power consumption to display pixels (graphene for example) But the energy issue may always be a problem, batteries can't be improved much.
We need nuclear powered phones
People often hold their phones very close to their faces though. I, for one, have terrible vision, so when i used my phone without glasses or contacts, I have to be inches away from the screen.
Do they though? Most tech marketing schemes are never asked for.
With screens that small, it's hard to understand how anyone not happy with their phone sharpness at 1080p or 1440p

This video aged about as well as Linus's earrings.
The kind of tech video I like from Linus....encouraging people not to spend more than what they really need (although some of the time their videos tend to go towards the other way)
I purchased a 4K tv to use as a gaming monitor partly because of a Linus review where he said it was a good 4K tv for gaming lolz.
@@Icureditwithmybrain yeah, well, just as I said on my comment...

@Glorious4K60FPS: for console gaming?
I have a dumb question, would that work of I plug the144Hz monitor into a PS4 ?
Please don't scratch the screens with those tape measures.
I get triggered when people point at my monitor to show things on it and leave fingerprints on it. A scratch will turn it into a crime scene.
would be fun to have an update on that with cyberpunk being released
Would you guys choose a 4k60hz monitor 28" or a 1080p144hz monitor 24"....as the PS5 doesn't support 1440p unfortunately so I'm a bit confused with what to go for? I play cod multiplayer and warzone as well as FIFA and the odd Far cry, Tomb raider, Gran turismo release. Thanks for any suggestions 👍
Thanks for validating my new 1440p purchase!
I just bought dell 2518d shelf display for 150$
What did you get? I'm also in the market to get two 1440p with >=144Hz monitors but don't know which one to go for. Need something 24 inches but all I can find is 27 or larger.
@@Aregito Do you care about gsync or freesync? AKA, are you team red or green? I went with this one: ruclips.net/video/_LTHr96NueA/видео.html. Super happy with it.
Mine too. :)
Same, I just bought a 1440p Gsync display and it's been awesome. Probably the most worthwhile purchase I've ever made for my setup.
But can you see crysis
Boy how times have changed, huh? I just bought a Gigabyte M32U 4k 144hz monitor and this video showed up on my recommended vids today.
What's your opinion on it? I have the LG 27GN950 (4K/144hz) but only over DP 1.4c (no HDMI 2.1 support, which is fine for my PC use case).
This is also around the time when nvidia was pushing for high refresh over 4K. I wonder if they told him to make a video like this then rewarded him like 25 rtx titans.
144hz gaming with Freesync.... Even at 1080p, goddamn it feels so good.
I wonder if 1440p 240hz will be a thing...

Yep, that one about the Linux drivers :)
Ah.. So that dislike where they come from.

honestly explained things much better for me since im currently looking to get a new monitor, though now being 2021 i was wondering if there is any updates on an affordable 1440p 144hz monitor OR a 4k 144Hz monitor that won't destroy your bank
Hilariously... I found out yesterday that 2 of my 3 monitors have UHD(4k) at 60 frames when I have been using them at standard HD since I got them three years ago... I also discovered that my Nvidia GTX 1060 goes from 1-10% usage to 30% usage with 2x 4k and 1 at HD. I tried gaming at 4k and that was not that bad, but not great either... someday when I get a 3000 series card I'll have to find out if I should run at 60 frames with 4k or pay out to get a 1440p 144Hz... thoughts?
I honestly find it hard to believe that 4 years ago you bought 2 4K monitors and didn’t realise that they were 4K, because they are still quite expensive. Are you sure that’s what’s going on here?

It's said natural resolution of the eye is just above 32k. Such a display, with the right frequency, would be like staring into another room like an actual window pane. Of course such a display would also require another powerplant to supply the energy.
Better stick to 4k or less.
Didn't Linus already try 16k gaming with an array of monitors. They should redo that video with an 4090

and I just got my brand new Gateway Profile 2 from Costco, man Windows 98 SE is just screaming fast with the 500mhz Celeron and 64mb of RAM.
2 yrs later I find out that there is no PCI/AGP slots, and no VGA/DVI/S-video or any video out whatsoever, and the built-in screen just died. To the dumpster it went.

I have had a 4K monitor for 2 years now.. and my biggest regret was not going for 144p and high FPS instead. Great video.
Edit: I meant 1440p - typo lol
I've had my 4k monitor for a little longer, and I deffinitely don't regret it, I love the 4k. That said, I would go for 1440 and high refresh instead if I were to get a new monitor right now.
Me too!! Except I will say that anytime I'm not gaming I'm very happy with 4k. The screen real estate you get is unbelievable for doing work.
TallBoy well, I have to agree with you there. I do a lot of video editing for my channel and the 4K real estate does help. But whereas I could always get an extra small-res monitor for cheap to help with extra screen space during editing... it feels much more expensive to get an “extra” 144p monitor for a better gaming experience, because I want the high frame rate too
I guess, I mean I still hit 70-80 fps at 4k so I guess that's just shit and all.

4K = Cinematic/ Leisure gaming
1440 = Competitive gaming
There is a time and place.
When playing something like Rust, I prefer lower resolution with higher framerate and a smaller monitor.
When playing RDR2, though, my 65 inch 4K OLED is perfect. More cinematic and immersive.
I remember playing CS 0,xx Beta at 640 x 480 or 800x600 since it was easier to hit something compared to playing at 1600x1200 which was the norm at the time. Also CRT Monitors had higher refreshrates at these resolutions.
240hz @1080p is competitive
Wait, you can play red dead 2 on PC? 🍄
How long have you had your OLED display?
Are you not concerned about the day when the burn-in will begin?
@@petterson- not at all. Close friend has had his 2016 oled since release and its pristine.
The problem with adding more pixels isn't just the monitor, but how it affects the game development process. Putting more resources into cramming more pixels on the screen takes away from other possible enhancements. Pixels are yielding thinner and thinner diminished returns. Having better lighting, more realistic animations, with fewer glitches, and greater stability- would be a far better allocation of resources.
Agreed! Why is clipping still a thing in 2021?
Bro this is big facts, most games still look like shit and they’re getting buggier, it’s 2021 wtf
