Palm tree garden in my London home September 2024 update

  • After a cooler than average summer in London I show how my palms and other exotics have grown in late September of 2024. After my tallest palm, a Washingtonia Robusta, died during a previous harsh winter I decided to keep the trunk and hollow out the top to plant a small tree fern inside it to give an illusion of it still being alive. Nearby I planted a smaller Washy as a replacement. In spring I planted a tree fern, Dicksonia Antarctica, beside at post next to the dead Washy. All the plants have done quite well as you can see...

Very lovely, I’m surprised they haven’t been vandalised yet?, mind you, still plenty of time.

I used a translation app for your comment. Thanks for your appreciation of my garden. I hope you also like the Ukrainian parrot!

Great to see the tour. I was looking forward to the update love the palm collection. The brahea armata is simply stunning. Shame about the large washy dieing. Love the two cycas by the patio door, I've found them really difficult to keep green at NE England

Good to hear from you again, Vincenze. I am surprised that the two cycas in pots are doing better than the bigger one in the ground. They don't seem to mind being root bound. At least the tall Washy's trunk is preserved and it has a little tree fern in the top.

Thanks for your appreciation Hognose. I have Chamaerops vulcanos, cerifera and humilis to look after, giving them French Solabiol palm specialised granular fertiliser to improve their health.

How does the Cerifera compare to the Humulis over winter? Just as hardy or needs a bit of winter prep?

@@essexhognose1808 because my Cerifera is partly in a pot (although its roots are in the ground ) I cover it with is fleece bag during winter. Both types are equally hardy when planted in the ground once fairly mature. Small young plants should be covered with a fleece bag in winter as precaution. All my palms have pebbles around the base to keep off the prolonged winter rain we get in the U.K. All palms can get root rot in our winters if their roots are water logged.
