can we appreciate that Percy set off the trap that killed Vex last season, and that she sets off the trap that leads to his death here? Of course, we've also established there was a worse time to confess your love than a zombie attack - if Percy hadn't been harping on it, Vex might have been more focused and not wandered off the path. that's your DM Matt Mercer singing there at the end.
Her father was voiced by Lou Diamond Phillips. The lead attacking wizard was voiced by Mark Strong. In terms of voice acting, that was a heavily loaded thirty seconds of animation.
To be honest, the thing about Vox Machina is that Critical Role basically know everyone doing work in English. Even minor characters have VA with 10 pages of famous works.
This episode HURTS. But also, taking a second to shout out the absolutely beautiful way they use light and colour in it. The assholes couldn't just make it painful, they had to make it pretty, too. 😭
I think it's a rather interesting comparison of Ripley and Percy. In an earlier episode she said he understands humanity better than she does and this is 100% true. Just look at what she thinks is holding him back. She sets dragons on his town to destroy any potential responsibilities he has there and her gas is killing his friends. She calls it a favor to him so that there's nothing holding him back from helping her. She just doesn't grasp his love of his home, his pride in his friends and his love for Vex'alia. All she sees are obstacles keeping him from working with her since he's so smart and she wants his genius working with her.
As a CR watcher, I was like "ah, yes, this event, and now it will happen this and that and ... wait no, what is this? that is illegal, you cannot do that". (More like after watching the first minutes of the next ep. I was still in denial by the end of this one)
It's always said that Grog is the most dangerous out of Vox Machina in direct combat, but Percy with prep time won't even *need* direct combat to fuck you up. Especially if you're both locked up in a cave full of machinery and guns.
The main limitation on Wild Shape beyond size etc (which is by level) is I believe the Druid has to have seen the creature before, if Kayleth has never seen a whale she can't be one
I was waiting for this reaction, for better or worse. I knew it would be bad and I was hear for it. It broke me too when I watched it and I knew it was coming, but they way they adapted and depicted it was a brutal knife twist. The allegory with both setting off traps that ultimately kill the the person they love, the inverse holding each other pose between episode 3 and 7, the colors. It was delicious. Thank you for uploading to feed my emotional vampirism.
Yeah, Percy's death broke me to pieces especially when Vex finds him and he dies in her arms 🥺😢😭 Ripley took him away from them in the most cowardly way possible😡🤬
Regardless of however tragic Ripley's past was, it's no excuse for what she does in the present. Same thing can be said for other characters like Batman, Vegeta, Nami, Raven, Blitzo, Angel Dust and scores of others
Tragedy either makes you want to inflict the same pain you felt on others or to SAVE others from the pain you felt. Someone once said of the comics: "If a writer can't picture Batman comforting a frightened child, then he's not writing Batman. He's just writing the Punisher in a Halloween costume."
@@kenle2 Sadly, most modern/current takes on Batman have him being more Punisher-esque in behavior. Also, nothing Ripley seems to be doing is actually "saving" lives
@@SilverScribe85that’s one thing I think this show has done pretty well with both Ripley and the Briarwoods. They have backstories which do a good job explaining why someone in their position would be evil, but don’t try to excuse or justify their actions. I feel like a lot of writers and audiences get the two confused, so it’s nice when a show can tell the difference between explaining and excusing a character’s actions
@@SilverScribe85Ripley is thinking long-term. By “equalising” the world by gifting firearms to normal, magic-less people, she hopes that less villages will fall to the overwhelming might of mages just like hers did, “saving” more lives in the long run. She doesn’t care how many lives she needs to take or hurt in order to achieve that goal, because she views it as insignificant compared to the number of “normal people” whose lives her weapons might save in the future.
I have seen Matt roll damage for something the he didn't even plan. Just a player decided to do something and rolled bad. His " I didn't plan this! You guys!!!!"
Those that pay attention to Critical roll KNOW that Zerxious is BIG TIME BS Pike. He was just as much at fault for the calamity as his friends and him putting on them alone is a massive LB move.
When you consider how many times a bunch of powerful attackers rolled up on a small village and killed all the innocent people who lived there, Ripley kinda has a point.
Dr. Anna Ripley is a great villain. Her actions are of course evil as one would expect from a villain, but at the same time her motivations are *_understandable._* Had normal people like the people of her village had the means of defending themselves against the attacking mages (i.e. had guns), then they might’ve survived. Her *_father_* might have survived. Ripley’s goal is to give every non-magic user in the world the ability to fight on equal footing with powerful wielders of magic, to ensure that what happened to her home and family cannot happen again. Levelling the playing field for the common-folk in a world of magic. Her actions in pursuit of that goal are reprehensible, of course, but her motivations and goals are at least understandable. Give everyone the power, and they can decide for themselves how they use it.
Yeah Ripley just doesn't understand that Guns, and the application of Explosive power based weaponry is just gonna create far more effective means for people to kill each other than protect each other. We the Audience already know this.

From a storytelling point, Anna's antagonist to Percy's protagonist is supposed to highlight Percy's redemption. Being in a very similar place Percy MADE the choice to abandon vengeance and she didn't. It's an AMAZING narrative juxtaposition!
And by the way… it was Marisha Ray (Keyleth) that wrote this episode. And Matt Mercer (the DM and her husband) singing the insert song at the end.
