    about the heart of the forest - if you don't use all of them and keep them after battle, they stay in your deck. You can take them to town, and, if you remember that they're legendaries, you can sell all of them for an insane amount of materials.

      I tried this in a toss deck, but then realized I started getting too many Heart of the Forests (~150 in my deck), not allowing me to get any block, so that was funny.

      @@TheCat_3 See it was an sheild build. The issue was that my damage output was low, and I just kept tossing the heart of the forests instead of using them, as it was just more damage, which just resulted in the problem getting worse and worse. I think it was the 3rd area bit, so I doubt that the block from armor and structure would have prevented the damage at that point.

    The normal rapier's effect stacks: +7 damage for each time you are attacked until you use it. Some enemies use 2-3 small attacks instead of one big one, and the rapier destroys them.

      Notable and not obvious synergy: if you have other weapons that deal damage to you on use, they trigger any item that says "when attacked"
      I'm unsure if this also works for things that deal damage to you in ways other than being used
      I had a really sick build with a rare shield that lowered its energy cost to 0 when attacked (and raised the cost on use), and the legendary cactus that gave spikes when attacked. It wasn't infinite even though the weapon was 0 cost, since the weapon I was using got more self-damage for the turn every time you used it, but if I had forged some haste on the shield it would've been

      @@tmbocheeko I had a really similar build with the buckler you used, a cursed item that dealt two damage to me each turn, another item that dealt damage to me any time an adjacent item was used, and then the spiked shield. I got infinite block each turn, and then infinite damage from the shield. I used the berserker club earlier in the build, and I dropped it for the same reason that your build wasn't infinite, the self damage just got to be too much.

      For some reason i am the opposite. I thought of bow below first and it took a while to realize bow behind is better for big bows.

      It's actually not though because it means he can't ever use both bolts of the quiver which is really good because it allows you two free instances of damage per turn meaning you can finish low health enemies off without wasting an entire arrow. Tyler didn't understand it but the quiver just gives you a lot more options.

    This is a super interesting run for me, when I did this run I actually kept the hatchets. I also had a brick and found out that if you put the brick over the acorns, it drops on top of the acorns and pushes them out of your backpack discarding them. I also had a candle that would discard an item it was played on. I'd use that to toss the brick so I could reuse the acorns. It's fun seeing how different this run was to mine.

      And it's zero cost to deploy and remove. Perfect for a discard slam deck with mossy mace.

    Interesting point on curses I only found out recently. If you have one and use the item that allows you to reroll loot after combat, this will reroll the curse out of your loot pool and effectively remove the curse. So it's nice to know that there is that additional way to get rid of a curse.

      Other hidden curse removal mechanism. Use a hungry (red yellow) manastone to eat the curse.

      ​@@mrbluebell2735 anything that destroys items works, hungry manastone is a pretty good one though since its reusable and can be useful even without destroying something (since it can be filled mid-combat and has a really good capacity)

      For anyone doing this with dynamite, know that it's all adjacent items to the target that is destroyed. Had to have several restarts due to the collateral damage.

    Hatchets arent quite negative on turn 0(turn of draw), as long as you have no armor cards they are +3 damage and otherwise neutral as they pay back their card draw. Its certainly a bit more awkward to use them with armor cards vs bricks/block mushrooms for defense, especially with a bow build you cant really afford to use toss with. They're definately more appropriate in a brick/block mushroom build

    there is a funny infinite damage build, you need only two oak hatchet and the frog hat relic. with a small enough deck you can play hatchet number 1 draw hatchet number two toss and, if your deck is empty, use hatchet number two to draw hatchet number one

      Another is berserkers club (0 energy weapon with each use scaling self-damage and falling damage for combat) + peridot (-1 damage +1 poison) + hours glass (-1 damage permanently, each time a weapon is used).
      The hourglass ensures the self-damage doesn't scale, and after a single fight debuffing it to deal 0 damage and self-damage at first use, the club is a permanent 0/0 free-use weapon.
      The peridot then turns this free-use weapon into a "inflict poison to enemy" 0-energy item. The peridot can be swapped with a +1poison blacksmith buff
      unsure how it deals with spiked foes.

      Haven't done this yet. I do have an infinite enemy do zero damage build. It's an every turn draw of book of nightmares. 4 mana activation, 2 mana regen carvings, a status clear and an in hand weapon.

      @@CaTastrophy427 In other words: use the fact that this build requires very little space to then fit in manastones + a cleansing wand?
      Maybe also cleansing flame relic because why not (and to counter "+1 spike on take dmg" foes)?
      And a gemstone heart or splint means any "+1 spike on take damage" foes are disarmed?
      The wand & mana is even optional, if you have two hearts or splints?

    about the ethereal quiver: if you got 2 bows and extended your backpack vertically you could use both arrows that it makes.

      She can do a 12 block long rail. Nasty with ghost gem
      I came up with a similar configuration. Mission run had 2 cosmic quiver and xbow. Went rose arrow as I gathered 6 large mana stone. Final build looked like this

      | 0 0 0 |
      The 0 spaces were for wiz buckler, frog boots, books and wands when needed. Some clear is needed. This setup can tandem launch both arrow and quiver at the same time

    About bows: it's better (more energy-efficient) to put the bow one away from the furthest left column, and then have two arrows in its sight at once so you can launch two arrows with a single energy. If you only need one arrow at a time, you can still do that with the same max damage.
    Acorn Caps are actually pretty bad sources of block overall, just use Enoki Mushrooms. Either you've got a consumable to use with them for 10 panic block, or they give 4 passive block every turn. Add in a Chanterelle or two for haste, and you've got insane block after just a couple of turns.
    I just beat Tote's hard mode with the 3-tile uncommon Brother's Bow and two Overgrown Arrows (all three natural-forged), plus a trio of Oak Hatchets, a few mushrooms (3 Enoki, 2 Chanterelle), two Daughter's Diaries for even more draw and +4 damage on all weapons, two Mossy Carvings for healing and shroom acceleration/panic block, and the dodge helmet (also natural forged, just for turn 1). Permanent items were a Whittling Blade for even more draw (mostly just +1 turn 1) and my relics, plus whatever consumables I'd pick up, mainly healing. The relics were the Wasp Honey (no better options from first relic), Spare Glasses for +2 energy every turn, and Reverse Hourglass, the one I'd really wanted, came from 3rd boss, giving me +2 draw per turn if I can empty my hand - and given that I only have three things that cost energy to play, that's guaranteed.
    I've also done a Kin run, where my damage literally went infinite with the Mother's Blade + Daughter's Diary combo. Only thing I had to fear was spikes.

      Acorn cap picks are generally good as it expands the number of plays per hand. At least early game where play economy is so limited.
      Say in 5 cards one is the acorn. It's play 2 one cost, plus acorn then toss for next hand. Without it the toss turn is likely next hand or now. The acorn is basically a 33% toss damage increase.
      People can scoff at that extra tick of damage till they fall short of killing that 1hp mook.
      Her zero cost on deploy or play are quite good in terms of damage efficiency. In a dreaming wand build it can dominate. Especially if damage boosters like warriors spellbook appear.
      Poison bubble can appear for her. A double charge of poison with dreaming wand is quite nasty.

    I’m actually doing this challenge right now! I mean, I started it last night and had to save and quit to go to bed. I’m also making use of the stuff Tyler skipped over. Since I’ve unlocked deeper areas, I have to go to Area 3 to finish it. I ended up cutting all my Acorn caps so I could use multiple Oak Hatchets and instead get block from Acorn Saps. With the Hatchets, I can cycle through to every carving, playing the arrows or saps multiple times per turn. I’m partly doing this because I’ve somehow never gotten an Overgrown Arrow this run and because it’s pretty powerful. I’ve also got a relic and an accessory that help increase my draw.

    13:58 i feel like is the best way i have seen tote explained. a lot of people simply dont like playing tote because tote feels like every single item you have matters a lot, and you cant simply throw things out as easily as you can playing purse

      Agreed on this. Playing Tote is an exercise in restraint. Her deck always starts behind the enemies as it needs to materialize then land the effect. A hand without viable means to attack/defend is nasty RNG at play. Player skill becomes irrelevant.
      I too find such win/loss quite disturbing. The challenge is learning how to mitigate and mentally sustain setback.
      I do like how holding cards in hand to manipulate draw was shown. It's a way to cycle powerful attacks next turn with certainty.
      Worthwhile with mother's blade, book of nightmares and the bayou club.
      Or lots of arrows

And I think by starting on purse a character who can quite literally switch builds at will if the right items are given, playing tote takes a lot more decision making and passing up on things that “could work cause they are cool” because they would slow down your build and increase RNG. It’s a completely different way of playing and I get why people don’t like it, but personally I have been really enjoying it

      Full toss build is difficult to pull off. Requires a pack that's small enough to be consistently full yet large enough to land useful damage.
      Thus far 6 to 7 spaces is about right. 5 items will do about 30 damage. Not sustainable vs mobs so a transition strategy is advised.

    Tyler saying that spending a carving to get a carving is a wash makes it clear he is not that familiar with card advantage. Spending a carving to get a carving is, in fact, great! It means the first carving effectively doesn't add to your deck's size, and it lets you see more carvings overall! Oak hatchet forever!

      You have to weigh that against the times where oak hatchet spends a carving to get three damage and nothing else. On average, oak hatchet probably spends a carving to get half a carving in this build.

    Tossing puts the carvings in the discard pile, right? So you can toss before using the Mossy Mace to get more damage when you use it to finish the fight. Effectively +4 damage for each carving in your backpack

      The issue is a mossy mace carving only attacks on deploy. Essentially dumping the entire pack for 1 attack. Only the mace given by Matthew can attack using energy.
      The dreaming blade is better though more difficult to deploy. 2 energy deploy zero activate. Adds 2 damage for every card played in combat.

      @@jeezuhskriste5759 that's true. It's a problem when there's a mob and she's got extra energy but no where to spend it. A single use big hit carving is somewhat inflexible. It also has to line up with enough discards to make her damage useful. Adding more random into an already chaotic deck is asking for trouble IMO.

      That's 30 damage per turn. It's a way to guarantee damage in a Tote archer build.

    The ethereal quiver, I think, should get better as you get deeper and level up more. Specifically when you have enough spaces to start opening up some verticality without having to sacrifice opening to the side. I haven't had a chance to play around with it, but I think it has potential.

    Just a tip: You can easily juggle between the shield and hatchet without worrying about tossing your bow, the hatchet can draw it while you still have a way to deal damage without the bow. Also discarding your acorns to refresh your blocking. Not to mention with the Frog Hat it's literally FREE.

    If you accidentally pick a carving in any reward scene you can unpack it by going to your deck and right clicking it and it should jusy say return carving.

    You can return picked up carvings by going into your backpack and dropping them. This only applies in the same room you pick them up. Edit: Crossbow plus the quiver is strong, you fire both for a total of 18 damage each turn.

      There's daughters blade that's 1 zero cost deploy 1 cost use (damage on deploy).
      Daughter's diary +2 damage to all weapons plus draw.
      Sisters spear. Zero cost deploy and 1 cost use. Gains 3 damage per turn unused.
      Brothers bow is a 3 block long bow.
      Brothers ring is a deck clear item.
      Finally mothers sword. Zero cost to deploy, discards on deploy and triggers all her above family if adjacent . Discards them as well.
      Attempted a family build. Falls short as it doesn't have innate defense and occupies quite a bit of bag space to trigger.

    Worst thing about Tote that if you unlock floors 7-9 before doing her quests, you will be forced to clear all 9 floors which is both hard and not fun.

      I know that pain. Nearly rage quit till an odd drop occurred. I paid max to the scavenger and he gave me 2 frying pans and the dodge mask.
      First thought was. Another bad rng roll for here.
      Then realised I was given an in hand weapon and a poison mushroom just dropped. I won my first tote run as a frying pan berserker with poison stacks. Vs the King. Completely turned her total loss opinion.

    The normal rapier counts "hurts!" as a form of attacked, so self-damaging builds with block can make it really strong. otherwise it's pretty meh.

      @@Llama-Drama it simply lets you draw 2 cards. It's a banned card because that is objectively better then anything else in your deck. Assuming all of your cards are good cards, pot of greed is worth twice as much as your worst card.

      For what it's worth, that *would* be how you use the Cosmic Crossbow he passed over at around 24:00, no? Because it fires each arrow in each _row_ to the right, you can have arrows basically anywhere in your bag other than behind it, and it will fire them

      i was glad to finally see someone using 1 row for 2 arrows, instead of 2 rows for 2 arrows
      you can be efficient with space with every non-crossbow bow if you lay it down, most people keep the bows standing,
      which isn't the worst thing in the world since it's more realistic,
      but it's a game, why not experiment??

      This means he can't make use of both bolts of the quiver though which is actually quite suboptimal. It is much better to get another instance of 15 damage which can be used either with or without an additional arrow. The one column of free space you lose is only 5 dmg.

      i wasn't even thinking about absolute max efficiency, just not being wasteful for no reason
      but yea, the crossbow and the quiver is a compact good combo, you noticed a good thing

    I am a bit sad he didnt pick the crossbow. It would have fired all the bolts with only the second row for a decent 30 damage. But arrows were 20 damage more eficient

      The crossbow was a bad play. All arrows it points at do 40% less damage no matter which bow you use. The correct way to use the quiver I think was to make a tall column on the far left where it could spawn them vertically. He would have lost 15 damage on his arrows but gained 30 damage per turn.
      But he won anyways so no need to min-max that hard.

      It wasn't a carving before. It had lower scaling but cost 1 energy. The whole carving system was different and none of it stayed in your backpack.

    God this character feels bad. The mechanic is neat, but why would you want carvings over the permenant items the other characters get?
    This character should be been designed around assembling combos mid combat, instead of just having normal items but more inconsistent. At least if the character was about assembling a combo, you'd have a reason for the drawing and inconsistency. This character could have been really cool if it was about trying to assemble an exodia to win combats explosively.
    I also think the first removal at every shop should be free if its not going to be combo oriented. Which is insane, I've played tons of Slay the Spire-likes, and card removal is the most busted thing across them all (if a spirelike offers you card removal, you always remove a card), but the starter deck is just so mid, and you have literally no flexibility in your build after you've picked a few things because you can't pivot like you can with the other characters.
    Honestly, I think this character needs a redesign. Either aggressively rework carvings to make them more distinct from just, permenant items. Or make carvings a supplemental booster for permenants, and reintroduce regular items as the character's core, with carvings being cool ways to interact with items you have.

      You don't understand. This IS the rework. Tote's carving didn't used to sit in your backpack EVER and you WOULD use normal items. The problem with that is it barely used the backpack. And you can 100% get combos and synergies with Tote. Natural let's you choose your starting hand and carvings are stronger then normal items. An arrow does 3+2 per empty while Tote's carving arrows do 7+5
      If you don't like Tote then just play Purse. Nobody is forcing you.

      I agree on the starter hand. It's hot trash. Even though she's 2x the HP and damage/block for about 20% more than a Purse start.
      Certainly makes for a difficult start early and mid game. My own runs essentially turn out the same as depicted in the vid. Lots of zero cost picks like acorn cap, briar knife, daughters blade and rusty blade. Some are zero cost deploy or active.
      These are excellent cards btw. A single poison upgrade to rusty blade jumps damage output from 13 over 3 turns to 17 over 4 turns. A zero cost daisy blade combo quickly cycle these cards back into use. Her bayou club is another fine zero deploy pick. Applies weakness on attack.
      She's usually not an instant gratification character. Some stalling is required for defense to come online or a DOT to kill.
      In a starter discard deck, it's advised to pick a mossy brick to do zero cost carving clears. Dropping a heavy object above a stack returns them into draw. That's not an obvious mechanic and i found it by accident via a heavy curse weapon.
      On the issue of removal and curse mitigation. Carvings use the rich rat when possible. He increments trades at 1 coin. Not accepting the trade just removes it from the deck.
      Tote trully challenges deck building as she needs to balance offense, defense, deck and status clear. However her end game builds are just bonkers. Especially where mushrooms and the book of nightmares is involved.
