It was a different time for Brits back then. We wanted the world to know that we were tolerant of races & creeds, and what better way, than to 'whoop it up' for a tremendously gifted athlete, such as Sammy Lee. Warmly, Jervis Cottonbelly
Kung Fu was huge in the UK in the 1970s the Lee name was a good thing to have, there was a wrestler called Grasshopper too I remember. The tv series called Kung Fu, the song Kung Fu Fighting, Kung Fu schools could be found in every town.
Unusual as expected Cooper to win, or not as the case was, may have seen ‘Tiger Mask” before, he was a very fit man, putting Cyanide to shame, certainly worth watching this on RUclips 👌.
I remember watching Cooper live in Eastbourne in 1986 ... he was fighting such a legend as Big Daddy ... would I travel England a little before, I would have watched the future Tiger Mask ,,,,
i remember watching Sid Cooper live in 1986 , in Eastbourne, he wrestled Big Daddy that time...and then had an argument with a lady in the crowd ... :))).... I never thought he could have fought my favourite satoru sayama....
The man we know as Tiger Mask I, moved to England very early in his career as England was the best place to get a wrestling education. Wrestling was a hugely popular attraction in the UK until the 90s. Nowadays it's mainly American stuff on television. Live shows exist but not to the same degree that they did. Thanks Technology for allowing us to communicate without a language barrier 🙌
There have been some absolute legend technical wrestlers over the years but Tiger Mask is possibly the best - the other is Dynamite Kid - and there are some great matches between the two.
I never knew about British rasslin. I grew up watching Georgia Championship Wrestling during the late 70's and early 80's. And thought that was the best. This is awesome. P.S. Les Thornton was my favorite British rassler.
Sent there for seasoning, as he was small even for Japan. Also wrestled in Mexico, under his own name, and was NWA Middleweight champion. Then went back to New Japan and became Tiger Mask.
Funny thing- the predominantly white, working class audience for British wrestling ALWAYS cheered for a black or asian wrestler against the white guy. Maybe a BNP supporter could explain this.
Promoter was Max Crabtree possibly. Tiger Mask was regularly on TV back then, very popular with the locals. It was on mainstream channel ITV every saturday.
No one wrote anything in British wrestling. It was broadcast and presented as legitimate sport, so there were no "angles". Kent Walton was the commentator. 👍
@tigerboy1966 The promoters were fearful of promoting black wrestlers as bad guys for fear of causing riots. There were a few though, Dave Bond and Johnny Kincaid for example. And they were booed and got the odd racial comment from the crowd (which had to be bleeped when they showed them on TWC). Kendo Nagasaki was basically a Japanese character even though it was a white guy from Stoke playing him.
Good old Sid Smashing heel Never understood why he wasn't given more of the limelight than lesser-skilled men. The ways of the promoters are Machiavellian. Why the F**k would anybody choose to be a professional wrestler? And have your body smashed up for £5 a time for 24/7 (in those days) WTF??!!!
@iknowme Just watched it. I think, anyway. "DaidoJuku vs Shooto"? Not exactly impressive, no, but to be fair, it was one-on-one and on a mat. If buddy had three buddies, and Sayama had some ropes...
Sayama was lightyears ahead of his time. What a legend.
What a champion! Sayama is a legend!
Great video!
Thank you!
This match was broadcast on British National Television in 1980. He was billed as a relative of Bruce Lee if you can believe it!
Thanks for the upload, great match!

Props to Sid Cooper for being so unselfish here.
Who in the world clicks thumbs down on a Tiger Mask match?

Easy to see the face was Sammy and the heel was Cooper of course as he always was.
Is this Sammy Lee’s 1st fight in the UK? Thanks for the great video anyway!
No he had a good run in the UK. He was already established by this point. I remember he was a bit of a hero to the kids.

He's even got the Enter The Dragon Shaolin sparring scene bounce. The attention to detail...
How cool the Tiger Step is!
Great "heel" cyanide sid..great stuff.💪
Because the audience love sport and beautiful action and they know wrestling so they are with the best in technics

Oh yeah dude 😎 great match 🙂

First fall in just 39 seconds of round one!
Sammy! You are making me laugh with wrestling techniques 😄🤣😄
Sammy lee is become TigerMask in Japan.
Not a BNP member. But the British have always loved an underdog.
I never knew about British rasslin. I grew up watching Georgia Championship Wrestling during the late 70's and early 80's. And thought that was the best. This is awesome. P.S. Les Thornton was my favorite British rassler.
You are so right. Now we are talking wrestling 🔥
Georgia wrestling 🔥.
Like most of these British wrestlers, Sid was a great shooter and hooker in his own right, trained by Dave Taylor's dad who was the best of his era.
I didn't know Sayama (Tiger Mask) wrestled in England! Amazing!
Sent there for seasoning, as he was small even for Japan. Also wrestled in Mexico, under his own name, and was NWA Middleweight champion. Then went back to New Japan and became Tiger Mask.
Lee isn't from Tokyo. He's from Yamaguchi.

Good Job Sid Cooper!
Well done Sammy lee

who was the promotor of this match in london? tv? thank u 4 upload from japan.
Promoter was Max Crabtree possibly. Tiger Mask was regularly on TV back then, very popular with the locals. It was on mainstream channel ITV every saturday.
@@cjddalton The promoter of this match was Dale Martin. His name is on the turnbuckle pads.
Dale Martin was the promoter. This match aired on ITV in the UK on October 11th, 1980 & took place in Southend, London.
All the old ladies believe in the old adage, "The darker the meat, the richer the gravy!" :P
Hey can someone tell me what show call.

Sayama kinda looks like San Antonio mayor Julian Castro. Nice.

Two contrasting styles of genius.
Cooper - genius? In some other universe, maybe...
So Sammy Lee is from Toyko, and the "tough guy from Leeds" is from Soho (which is in London)? GG, guy-who-writes-the-on-screen-stuff. :p
No one wrote anything in British wrestling. It was broadcast and presented as legitimate sport, so there were no "angles". Kent Walton was the commentator. 👍
God Sid's offense is so f'ing tight. Everything he does looks like hurts so much.
Because it probably did!

Dave bond and Johnnie Kincaid were bloody good wrestlers to say a racist thing is so wrong
Pfft, the Brits would probably have cheered Adolf Hitler if he was against Sid Cooper or Jim Breaks. :p
A BNP supporter couldn't explain how to spell BNP. That's why he's a BNP supporter.
