Kendo Nagasaki, Dynamite Kid, Mick McManus, The Royle Brothers, Giant Haystacks, Adrian Street, Big Daddy, names that bring back fond memories of the 70s, world of sport with Dickie Davies. These matches, were on just before the day's, sports, results. This is when TV was innocent, informative, and varied. Halcyon Days.

Lovely to be reminded of these great wrestlers. You missed off Jackie Pallo though. Diddy David Hamilton, tells the story of when he was put in the ring with Jackie. The producer said not to worry, as it's all fake. He soon found different 😂

Really Kellett was a great wrestler but it was more of a comedy routine in a holiday camp than a wrestling match with all of those "face" nice guys I preferred the "heel" bad boys who wound up the crowds and the old dears down the front trying to hit them sometimes with their bags and brollies when a golden boy like Vic Faulkner or Steve Veidor were taking a "pounding" no one ever really got hurt did they apart from Mal Kirk and Masambula they had very unfortunate accidents.

Like most people, I sat with my dad to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoon, Les Kellet was my dad's favourite, along with Bert Royal. But he hated Mick McManus, and Jackie Pallo, I liked Catweazle and Kendo Nagasaki, because I liked his gimmick, and his eventual unmasking. During the bouts, the teleprinter was giving the football latest results at the bottom of the screen. But I mainly liked it because I got to spend time with my dad.

This takes me back. When I was a young lad I used to watch these blokes on TV. Les Kellett, Mick McManus, TV Jackie Pallo, Bert Royal and Vic Faulkner - The Royal Brothers, The Black Diamonds. One of my teachers used to work in the dressing room when they visited Leamington Spa. He told us how the wrestlers discussed who was going to win each bout and what moves they were going to make. The famous wrestlers always beat the up and coming, but it wasn't so cut and dried when both contestants were equally famous. I think Mick and Les took turns to win, Les, Bert and Mick always beat Jackie Pallo, and Mick would always beat Vic. It's only watching this bout now, that I can see just how false it really was. Old birds in the audience whacking the "villains of the ring" with their handbags. Such was the entertainment in the 60's.

Les Kellet one of the strongest men I ever knew, I recall him physically picking a car up after it had slipped off the ramps and placed the car back on the ramps.
His eldest son was also a wrestler, wrestled under the name of Dave Berry.. Les was a very quick driver, and I had quite a few white knuckle rides, whilst being with him and his second son Chris; driving to the Winter Gardens as Les was running late. He and his wife ran a cafe at the bus terminal in Thornton Bradford. Chris and I were best mates at school. Les treated me like his son, he wanted both Chris and I to become wrestlers but both our career paths took different directions. Les was tee total but always tolerated his wife who wasn’t. She was extremely fond of Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry. He was a consummate entertainer.

I remember watching Les “fighting” Mick McManus, Giant Haystacks, Ricky Starr the ballet dancer etc. at our local covered swimming pool.
