  • In this episode of Enlightenment Today we will explore Karma. We will examine the origins of Karma, what it is, and how to transform and transcend Karma. We will dispel the modern myth that Karma is related to a philosophy of cause and effect. You will discover in this episode that Karma has nothing to do with reward and punishment. To understand your own Karma and the practice of Karma yoga is to realize it is truly about purifying your actions to be more humble and selfless in service to something much greater than your personality.

once again thank you. actually I am fairly familiar prabrabdha karma and have studied jyotish a bit. I would like to request a video on karmic debt. they say even the Buddha had to finish off paying karmic debt even after his enlightenment.

Thank you my friend. I'm extremely grateful that you appreciate this work. I'm trying to put out as mush authentic content about the East as possible. A lot of the information about spiritual topics online and in books is not understood deeply, so I'm hoping my videos start to do the real knowledge justice. Thank you again my friend.

Love your videos Jason. I've been naturally drawn to Anapanasati, just from knowing the definition of Nirvana, which is to EXHALE. And by focusing on my exhale, it's amazing how the inhale is of zero effort. I practice a 5 second deep exhale and count 5 seconds as the inhale naturally enters.

Jason, I greatly appreciate your fullilance of my request. It is a subject that is not only difficult (and inadequate) to understand intellectually bit even harder to understand and internalize "soulfully" that's why keep coming back. But Jason, if it is not "you" since atman/anatman are really the same thing then who is creating the samscara?
    I thank you my friend.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one Karl. I definitely could make a lot of videos about this subject. Well the one making samskaras is the person, the idea of Karl and Jason who are stuck in the cycle of believing they are this identity. So in the East, once we are more established in the nondual place of the Self within then the turbulence of our mind/personality caught in the dance of duality will slowly lose its influence over us, us meaning the Self. Patanjali explains this better in the Yoga Sutras when he states that the mind, including the person, is part of the material world (praktri) and our transcendental Self (Purusha) stands outside of that witnessing everything Prakrti is objectively. I know that may seem complicated but I hope you can catch what I am saying.

What does "yoga" mean in this context?

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  7 лет назад +8

Thank you for watching Antony. When I use the word yoga I am using it in its real form/traditional form, and not something that people think is a physical exercise which is actually only hatha yoga, but a poor version of it. If you want to know more about what yoga really is check this episode out ruclips.net/video/6xyF3XQO_L0/видео.html

I am just going to add to the previous comments and say thank you for producing your videos. They are clear, informative, funny and practical. I have one question if you ever have time to reply. I am a teacher and was wondering if there is any wisdom (eastern or otherwise?) on how to really reach children? I am in the UK and behaviour is a problem. I once heard a quote that basically said punishment and reward was the lowest form of education. Do the sages of times gone by have any advice on how to help children really engage, or are many always destined to be wild in their youths? Many thanks again.

You are confusing between two entirely different concepts--The so-called Law of Karma and the yoga philosophy of Karma Yoga.
Karma is an action--thought, word, or deed, that produces a definite result--either good or bad. Good karma is an action that produces beneficial results either to oneself or to others, including animals, plants, and nature. Bad karma is an action that produces harmful effects either to oneself or others. According to the law of karma, which is akin to Newton's third law of motion, or the law of cause and effect, for every action -good or bad, one will receive the corresponding rewards or punishment known as karmic retribution sooner and later. Every positive deed we do generates a “merit” while every negative deed results in a “demerit”. For example, if our thoughts are of kindness, love, and compassion, these very thoughts will be returned to us sooner or later. If we send our thoughts of hatred, anger, or pettiness, those thoughts will also be returned to us. If happiness is given happiness will be experienced in return, and if sorrow is given sorrow will be experienced in equal measure.
In other words, whatever we caused others to experience, we must ultimately become our own experience. The law of karma was designed so that we could experience what we had done to others. It is the basic learning tool for the school of the Earth. All thoughts, words, and deeds draw a return of identical energy. Good, warm, loving thoughts, words, and deeds are repaid in kind. Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. Similarly, whatever circumstances, situations, or difficulties we may encounter at the present moment are also the consequence of our own prior thoughts, decisions, and actions. Here, it should be noted that if whatever is happening is because of our past actions, the present also creates our future. Thus, ultimately, we are the cause of our happiness and misery, wealth and poverty, health and sickness, or wisdom and foolishness. Because of people's very short memory, it is difficult for them to understand the link between their actions and their consequences. The life you are experiencing is a mish-mash of all your karmas interacting with one another.
The yoga philosophy of Karma Yoga as expounded in the Bhagavad-Gita refers to performing actions without any attachment to the fruits of the action and maintaining equanimity in the face of success or failure. The Gita teaches that in the absence of proper insight, karma or action leads to bondage. But when one performs selfless action, detached from its fruits, in the spirit of surrender to God and with a profound insight into the nature of the Self, the same action is transformed into the mystical art of Karma Yoga--yoga of action, a purifying process leading to liberation or freedom from the cycles of birth and death. All actions are performed by the forces of Nature. But, through ignorance man takes their authorship upon himself and becomes bound by them. The enlightened man knows the truth and enjoys freedom even while engaged in the activity. The Gita teaches that when Karma is blended with Vikarma (a special discipline), one is led to Akarma (a state where karma is transcended). Endowed with this art, a Karma Yogi continues performing actions that purify his mind and heart and are conducive to the welfare of society. By gaining Divine consciousness man rises to the oneness of all life, and in this state, all actions culminate in the knowledge of God.

      Both sound antithetical tbh.
First you say, "we" do actions that bring about positive or negative retributions in this life or next.
Then you say, "nature" acts of its own accord, and we have no hand in it.
      What gives?

In my opinion, it is very toxic to claim that all illnesses a person experiences or situations of wealth or poverty are the result of their karma. Accidents are a thing and many things are beyond our control and not our fault. So many innocent people are killed, raped, tortured etc. every day...and it can happen to anyone, regardless of their "good" or "bad" karma. This assumes that every bad thing or good thing that happens is the person's fault, even early deaths...a good excuse to not do anything about various social issues. And I guess this applies to animals and plants too...since they have souls, we'd all have to experience their suffering from us eating them. Just because we have negative thoughts does not mean that they will always be returned to us. Just imagine how difficult it would be if people with anxiety or depression were punished because of their negative thoughts about the world and themselves. And since we make mistakes in every life, we would all be in an eternal reincarnation loop since we cannot remember our karma from other lives. This New Age Law of Attraction, to me, does not seem that far off from the concept of eternal sin.
In regard to Life Reviews, what kind of punishments will we face when we do complex actions like saving people while letting others die in the process? Or when people are born with various disorders and they behave in violent and harmful ways beyond their control...do they deserve to be punished? This does not sound like a non-judgmental God or universe.

There is a contradiction here. Action and a cause and effect. Action by its nature implies beginning of action and end of action. Then what is the outcome of action? The effect of action. So there is a cause ( beginning of action) and effect ( the outcome of the action done in time) So action is making effect or more precisely actions are making causes for effects to happen in the future. Your idea of action is not wrong but it is incomplete information. You surely red many books and your knowledge coming from those books you was reading in your life. What about transforming your Alayna-vijnana (a field of karmic seeds in your 8th consciousness) into Dharmakaya the thought-free awareness, the awakened awareness of Buddha...? Where field of karmic seeds is removed through realization of Emptiness of awareness of your mind? More meditation is necessary for you. Less readings. More your own revelations. Buddha Shakyamuni was teaching from his satori not from books. Put it all down. Sky blue. Become blue sky. Trees green. Become greeen trees. Then when hungry eat. When tired just sleep. When somebody hungry give her food. When tired give him rest. Then continue your good actions. Then you bring benefit for this world and all beings. Then no problem with your karma.
