He stole the tape, put it in VHS recorder in his home and soon felt something is very wrong. He never got rid of that smell

no, the vhs if you bought it in a retail store were like 20 bucks, the reason why this one was 98 bucks was because it's a rental, rentals were speciality items in limited supply and so the rental stores valued them more, cause if they get lost or destroyed they would have to buy a new one which wasn't cheap, plus these weren't regular copies, they were built more durable to withstand constant use and abuse from customers, so if someone lost or destroyed it, they really brought the hammer down on them to send a message, 98 is excessive, especially back then, but it gets the stern message across to respect their property
