As a big busted person I always prefer a vee neckline. Two things I find work are: to staystitch the vee to stop distortion, and baste above the vee to the back. Then draw the thread up 1.5 cm or so on each side, press out the wrinkles and then add the neck band. It stops gapping from occurring.

I just added a 2" strip under the sleeve and down the sides (based on another video of yours.) Now I'm going to take the sleeves from the same extra t-shirt fabric to lengthen the sleeves AND the hem to make the crewneck into a v-neck. Thanks for the tutorial!
Woo hoo. Love the V neck. I really prefer a V. I have fixed well tried to fix unisex T’s by turning down the neck band and with a little stretch, sewing it just in half. I hang my head in sadness thinking this is so SO much better. I have a wonderful t shirt that I tried to make smaller at the sleeve armhole juncture and it’s too small now. I wonder if I can go back and try again? I’m going to search your video’s and try and find a solution. Thanks again. Lunch time sew fan here! 😂.
Thank you so much Catherine. I didnt know you could do this way by cutting off the bottom. Genius! One ask: I kinda lost ya at the vneck part because of the black on black. Maybe in your thrift travels do a tshirt with a different color v? I will baste like you said, and "fiddle with it"! Thanks for your great instructions!
Thanks, for the sweet comment and the good suggestion. I have a couple more T-shirt videos coming up, so maybe I'll try to do a quick review of the V in one of the options.
Yes, I also kinda got lost, can’t see well with black on black. Could you show us again on something like a yellow T-shirt with green threads both ways? Thank you.
New to your channel, lifetime sewer. I was asked to downsize a very important oversize Tshirt for our city manager. Yikes, no pressure. After watching both of these lessons, I am ready. That tip about the underarm syce is a game changer and the Vneck is brilliant. Thanks so much.
You mentioned using a round point needle on knits in a previous video. I have learned the hard way that tension settings need to be adjusted. But, the directions I was able to find on sewing knits said to use a mesh specialty thread (that feels like a huge spend when one is tryiing to make do). Do you use any particular type thread? I was taught in snatches by my Mom, so never had full cohesive training. Is there a course you would recommend?
A ballpoint needle is always recommended on knits, but truth be told, I usually just use my universal needle! If it skips stitches, then I'll change to a ballpoint. And my go-to thread is just a polyester thread. I'm like you--I don't want to spend a lot of things like needles and thread! I'd rather spend the money on fabric!
I just used your tutorial. It worked. Thank you so much. Tight T-shirt necks bug the heck out of me. I can't wait to try again, but I had a hard time seeing the manipulation of the V part ends. So after stitching the center of the new band together in the V shape, I trimmed that seam to 1/4 inch and opened the seam flat. Then I finished attaching the neck band. I am not sure how it will hold up to washing (the narrow seam allowance). I couldn't see what you were doing with the flaps because it was black. Could you do an addendum focusing on just the V in a light colored t-shirt using a different color thread? That would be so helpful. You could use the new sample on a project board for your classes.
Looks great! With just a few weeks of summer left I thrifted an off-the-shoulder elastic-‘neck’ sundress and would like to reduce the tightness of the elastic around the arms and add straps to be more comfortable. Congrats on finding a thrifted treasure. Each situation is unique, so it's next to impossible for me to advise you on your dress.
