- Ohhh Brackenboy. How I love you. You’ll never be cardboard to me again. Admittedly if every character was a carbon copy of your personality without any growth or connections to pull on, that would be boring. But you specifically are so special to me.
The level of depth I have managed to mentally apply to Brackenfur really is something you can do with just about any character in Warriors. Admittedly the further away from the spotlight a cat is, the more blank spots there will be to fill in (looking at you Reedwhisker and Sorrelstripe) but I guarantee even with the background cats from a guide book that were never even given a name, you can still make a character you are happy with who fits neatly into their world. Basically, go find your own Brackenfurs, Thornclaws, Hazeltails, and more. Give some love to the lesser known modern cats.

I always thought that the better story arc for Brambleclaw would be for him to not get to be deputy. Then he would have had to overcome his ambition in a way that Tigerstar never managed to

I'm really happy to hear that! Definitely Firestar's choices in deputies were...questionable, in 2/3 cases at least. He tended to play fast and loose with the warrior code before he was a leader to but I would hope he could come to understand the point behind that particular rule, learning what is actually like to be responsible for and lead someone, which neither Graystripe nor Brambleclaw ever really did.

I remember thinking the same thing when I was first reading The Prophecies Begin, that Brackenfur was a better choice for deputy than GrayStripe. Then I saw Blixemi's video about favorite warriorcats characters, and she totally predicted it haha. I really love all the evidence and reasoning!
Biggest mistake I made in the warriors fandom: believing when someone says that “nice loving kind” characters are boring, have nothing to do, and deserve to be killed off compared to the other drama going on with other characters. Looking at you old forums 😑

i used to hate ferncloud cuz i was like 11 and believed the dumb old "she doesn't contribute" idea, and knowing that the amount of hate she got was why she was killed off is really sad. ive grown to appreciate her a lot and it sucks how much people like 11 year old me hated her for stupid reasons and that being why she ended up getting killed off.

Longtail wasn't blinded offscreen, it happened at the beginning of Firestar's Quest.
And I still think he should have been deputy before that point instead of Greystripe tbh

But not all ppl read firestars quest (for some reason)
Considering that super editions aren't exactly a part of a main series, they're normally a form of bonus content/behind the scenes/what was happening when you weren't with x character, it technically is off screen. I doubt the average reader would go from TPB to Firestar's Quest, to TNP. They'd likely go from PB to NP. Especially since without allegiance context ig- there's no real way to tell when Firestar's Quest takes place without reading the book itself. And by when it takes place I mean when in the life of Firestar it does. So your average reader wouldn't know to jump from TPB to the super edition.
(And sorry for the rant! This wasn't meant to be offensive, but I just wanted to list some points😅)
Isn't it technically off screen since it wasn't showed how but when longtail had came back it is explained a hare blinded him. What I'm trying to say is it wasn't a scene showed in firestar's quest but we know he was blinded by a rabbit.
I know it was Whitestorms final wish for Greystripe to be deputy but I genuinely think that Longtail or Mousefur should have had the position instead. Or even give Longtail the position first, then when he's blinded he could ask Firestar to then give Mousefur the job, it making more sense if they were written to have a friendship before they were in the Elders den together.

I actually think this is a great idea. Brambleclaw could still get Berrypaw as his apprentice but then be shocked when he doesn't become deputy and he could be resentful of Brackenfur until Brackenfur calls him out on it. Then him going to the dark forest to see Tigerstar and Hawkfrost would make even more sense and Hawkfrost can offer to help him become deputy. It would also make sense for Hollyleaf's arc since she always wanted to become leader, and she'd be the deputy's apprentice.
It would make his interest for Hawkfrost more logical, yeah. Also, imagine if Brackenfur was tricked and trapped by Hawkfrost, rather than Firestar. Now, instead of renoncing to get immediate power in order to save his old mentor and friend, he has the choice of saving someone he doesn't really know and he might not ever get power if he does so.
We'd have to alter Ashfur's motivations a bit, however. He doesn't only hate Squirrelflight, he also despises Brambleclaw, and he hopes that Brambleclaw will give in to the temptation of killing Brackenfur so that he gets exiled from the clan when he tells everyone. It would make Hawkfrost's last words that much more chilling; he trully has a personnal enemy in camp.
It might just be me misremembering the first arc through rose-coloured glasses cause I love Brackenfur- but for a long time I've seen him as Firestar's de facto right hand man! It seems like whenever Firestar needed something done back then he would always ask Bracken to do it. And I've hc'd that they grew close while Firestar mentored him. Making Bracken an easy choice for deputy!

I never considered the thought of having Sandstorm or Longtail as deputy after Whitestorm. The hypotheticals are endless.
I’m not really keen on the whole idea of leaders making their mates deputy.
Seems a bit unfair in my opinion.
My favourite cat ever!! I really hope he gets his own mini-figure someday or a plush (I can helplessly dream) but you're absolutely right, he SHOULD HAVE been deputy over Brambleclaw/star!
If you think about it
FireStar never really got to choose his deputy because Star clan Interfered with the real world FireStar should not have picked BrambleClaw and it’s sad Star clan wouldn’t let FireStar make his own chose. BrambleClaw always abuses his power,Most the time his decisions are also made on what he thinks not for the clan. BrackenFur also is responsible and is Respectful he doesn’t second guess his leaders choice and when Brambleclaw could not have the apprentice he wanted it was clear to see that he was angry and throwing a fit as he ran out of camp after the meeting. BrackenFur also doesn’t have such a short temper he takes the time to think and also listen and help others without such a rush.
Both graystripe and bramblebutt killed their evil brothers to save firestar, perhaps firestar saw this a true sign of loyalty, and they were deserving of being deputy.
Those three cats are the handshake meme but the middle is "killing your evil brother."

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Brackenfur deserved so much more! Especially for a cat that had a surprisingly good amount of time showing how capable they were.
Personally I never liked Graystripe's character since to me, he never took things seriously. Brakenfur, sure he was a background character but he got more development than pretty much all of Modern Riverclan.

I think that Brightheart should be the deputy and then the leader. First of all: Brightstar is an awesome name.
Second of all: disabled leader, yes! We didn't have it since Crookedstar, all the disabled cats are either killed or become medicine cats.
Third of all: she is shown to be compassioned, level headed and most importantly: not too ambitious. Just because some cats want to be leaders (*cough, cough* Hollyleaf) doesn't mean they would be good at this job. And her experiences would be great for a leader, she would always think twice before sending any cat into the battle and talk things through with her clanmates. She would be the dyplomath of the Clans. And she even is partially trained in medicine cat duties - so she is able to put herself in all of the clan roles and understand all the needs.
It wasn't the first day of mentoring Brackenpaw that he fell into the river.
The first day was when Fireheart first spotted Princess while he was out with Cinderpaw.
The next day Graystripe took both apprentices out while Firestar went to talk to her
Brakenfur never was a cardboard cutout to me. That was Thornclaw, Brackenfur always had a character in my mind, and I always wish he was deputy.
And yes, while I do love Graystripe, he was never meant to be deputy. I enjoyed it at the start, as it was a sign of Graystripe fully being accepted by the clan (and it can 100% work still if written well), but canon Graystripe is no deputy.
Wonderful analysis of Brackenfur! Background characters are always a great avenue for injecting personal stories and Warriors has some of the blankest slates there are. For Brackenfur, though, I always feel a bit sad when people refer to him as a cardboard character; he might be now, but back in tPB > OotS, he was one of my favorite background cats (and one of the most consistently well-written ones).
Going through the process of rewriting the series for myself for my TB AU, there are definitely characters that were once blank, meaningless background cats that I put a bit more love into, especially the ones that I chose to have live instead of die (Swiftpaw and Snowkit).
Brackenfur in my AU uses his selfless and loyal nature to save his sister from the car, suffering her injury for himself - he takes that devotion and becomes ThunderClan's medicine cat (part of my AU early on was to swap characters around and see what might come from it). His personality is well suited to being a good, thoughtful medicine cat; but I took that loyalty and used it to create some conflict, too! It might not be the most ideal version of Brackenfur, but he's mine, and that's enough.
Brackenpaw despite having little to do always seemed nice, and sort of relatable? Brackenfur always pleased others and despite probably olny dreaming of being deputy and brambleclaw being the popular vote for deputy, he was always fair.
Legit when Firestar first chose Brambleclaw as his deputy my first thought was BRACKENFUR IS SUPERIOR
I only got a couple of chapters into Paws of Stars (for time-reasons), but I think making Brackenfur deputy and his conversation with Graystripe, was my favourite thing about it. Even without remembering anything else about Brackenfur, that "Drama" alone makes him a perect choice. I really loved it.
I hope I'll eventually have the time to read the rest of it.
Brackenfur was my favourite character from the moment I first met him and he is still the undisputed number one all these years later. I don't think i'll ever love a warriors character as much as I love him

Bramble law wasn’t ready to be a deputy, if he ever would have been, and Brackenfur was perfect and still younger back then.
Also, I always hated Graystripe as deputy: you can’t just make your best friend who broke clan code and isn’t usually as serious as the deputy!!!
Gray shouldn’t NOT have been deputy at all. Brackenfur was still maybe too young then, it would be debatable, but Bracken really is perfect and he should’ve been put into power, or at least deputy.
But I do love to think of him as a quiet and collected leader who is friendly and caring, and wise beyond his years.

Brackenfur and Sorreltail’s relationship was one of the most wholesome in all of Warriors.
He loved her, and his devastation at her death was heart-breaking :(.
Brackenfur has always been one of my favorite Warriors characters, so it always bugs me when people just call him the cardboard cat. Like, I always gravitate towards characters that are just nice to people. But when characters that are just nice don't have tragic backstories explored or the inner working of their thoughts explored people just call them boring all the time.
So yeah the first time I read that Firestar was even considering Brackenfur for deputy I squealed even though I doubted it would happen because of course main character of the arc gets it.
Even after this video, brackenfur has always been my favorite back ground character. He is a super good warrior who devotes his life more than expected and always partakes in situations where he would be needed. I love his relationship with sorreltail and the fact that he named a kit after his dead sister makes him so much better in my eyes.

Brackenfur has always been my favorite character. I was just drawn to him from the start. This video made me very happy.
Great to see this. Brackenfur was one of my favorite characters when I read the series as a kid, and when I eventually revisited it and checked out the online community for the first time, it was kind of sad to see how few people appreciated him. He didn't get enough attention, but this video points out all the things I appreciated about his character and pitting him against Graystripe would be an excellent way to explore some of the unresolved tensions in his back story. Great video!

Honestly Brackenfur was always basically my favorite tomcat. I loved every moment I could learn more about him in the books. I know one of the authors once said if they could marry any cat it would be Bramblestar and all I could think was ICK. I'd choose Brackenfur lol
When people say brackenfur is a boring character I get so aggravated because he is one of my favorites , he’s a sweet caring boy who deserves the world, and to the public if there’s no drama apparently they’re “boring”. Makes me upset

In fairness to Firestar, it was almost Whitestorm’s decision and he had to name someone in the middle of the battle in case something went wrong
And Tallstar also advised Firestar to pick Brambleclaw as deputy when he was dying. It's definitely not something to lay *all* on Firestar but the characters as a whole having this opinion skews me more towards seeing the hands of the editors in this case. They just really wanted to have Graystripe and Brambleclaw as deputies.
When Squirrelflight finally transforms into Squirrelstar, I wish Brackenboi could be deputy, but he's an elder D: ive always loved brackenfur and looked it up to see if anyone agreed, and you popped up!
I completely agree with you! Brackenfur, in my opinion, is a much better choice than Brambleclaw. I never really liked Bramble tbh. Brackenfur always came off to me as mature, loyal and sweet- he's so underrated and it's disappointing for a character with such an interesting story! I love how well worded all this was. Thank you so much for understanding what he could've been, me and my friend have talked about this before and we are both Deputy Brackenfur fans and we both think he would've been a better choice than Brambleclaw for many reasons. Brackenfur's a stable levelheaded do it all warrior, he's the obvious choice for a deputy.
Love this video. Brackenfur is also my special boy, and I swear I started losing interest in the series at the same time he was snubbed for deputy 😅

I'm totally into this idea, but the small issue(clarifying I don't mean this in a bad way, just an observation) is that if he was made leader, he would be an elders age by the time broken code came around (this isn't even an issue I have because we have Mistystar)
A simple fix: Either he retires early for some reason, or dies. I can see some parallel universe where he was the cat lured to the fox trap by Ashfur and Hawkfrost. (Obviously I don't want him to die he's my favorite cat but this could've been one plot to go down. Would've paralleled Cinderpelt's tragedy as well as how his father Lionheart died and allowed Tigerstar to become deputy.)
It didn’t stop Mistystar, who was already at least seven-eight years old when she rose to power in Omen of the Stars. It’s not impossible.

So with Brackenfur being deputy, do you still see Brambleclaw eventually becoming ThunderClan’s leader after Firestar’s death? I’m really sorry if you’ve already covered this in Paws of Stars, I’m a bit behind!
I don’t, personally. I haven’t reached the point in Paws of Stars where a new leader is being considered and, although I do know myself what will happen then, I can confidently say that Bramblestar will not be a part of the Paws of Stars ending.
Honestly, why not have Longtail temporarily be leader until he can’t anymore? Aka being blinded. That would be awesome! No known deputies have really retired besides a select few cats knocked off.

In my own rewrite, I made Squirrelstar (Sqirrelflight) make Brighteye 9Brightheart) her deputy. I did this for a lot of reasons. One, Squilf herself was incredibly young when she became her aunt Flamestar (Princess's) deputy, adn she would feel like she needed a more calm, exsperienced cat. Two, hwile it hasn't been broguht up yet, Squirrelstar knows that Brighteye adn Cloudfeather (Cloudtail, who is now a medicine cat) are mates and had Whitewing, adn Squirrelstar is with the WindClan deputy, Crowtail (Crowfeather) due to how close they became on the journey to find cats a new home.
Brighteye also went throguh a lot in the seriers, form loosing an eye, to realizing she basically helpe dkill her friend Swiftpaw, to falling in love with a medicien cat. She had always taken it in stride, quickly adapting to bth the lost of half her vision in a clan where deph perception is important, to leanring ways to keep people form geting suspicious on who Whitewing's father was. She'svery calm adn level headed in teh series, but also isn't afraid to punish everyone equally if she needs to, soemthing Squirrelstar isn't really able to do, with her loyalty and favortism making her a bit more forgiving towards the other clans as well as her own kits and fmaily.

@@ccondelli It's as much of a punishement for himself, tho. If he's not talking to her, she's not talking to him. If he was using this as a mean to obtain something from her, I would see a moral issue, but he's not. He just doesn't want anything to do with her anymore, and that's his right. Brambleclaw was mistrusted when he was younger because of his father, and that mistrust left deep scars in him. So when he learns that Squirrelflight, one of the people who loves him the most in the world, didn't trust him enought to reveal their children's true identity...That's gotta hurt.
@@legrandliseurtri7495 I would agree with you if it didn't last for an entire year, and if it wasn't for the fact that StarClan literally told her to lie to Bramble, and if it wasn't for his many other toxic behaviors. The silent treatment is a form of abuse, and the fact that he is Clan deputy and also her boss makes this even more toxic. I understand when you are hurting you're not always ready to talk, but this isn't an excuse for an entire year. Moonkitti made a really good video about this if you're interested :)

2)The fact that Starclan told Squirrelflight that wasn't established until several years later with leafpool's wish, so it's not relevant when judging his character.
3) I did watch Moonkitti's video and I found it not very convincing, althought it's been years since I last read Twilight or Sunset so I don't really remember what happened between them.
4)Finally, if silent treatement is abuse, does that mean that, in all cases, if you leave your significant other and refuse to have them involved in your life again, you're actually abusing them? Let's imagine for a moment that this person cheated on you(which is certainly a break of trust far worse than what Squirrelflight did, but you get the point), are you obligated to still talk to them?

to my memory, all that Firestar says about this is something along the lines of "Brackenfur would be a great deputy, but if we're talking about who will become leader in the future... Somehow, I just can't see Brackenfur becoming Brackenstar." This is never mentioned again, but it makes no sense.

Wasn't Brackenfur a bit too young to be deputy after whitestorm? And i'm pretty sure firestar mentioned somewhere in a dangerous path or later on that he didn't want to put sandstorm at any kind of risk, he was very protective of her and because of that probably wouldn't have chosen her to be deputy. In my opinion picking your best friend to be deputy is a very firestar thing to do.
I think the reason why firestar picked bramblestar as the next deputy is because he felt bad about his mistreatment in the clan for being tigerstars son. It felt like his way of showing he was truly sorry and that he respected him and rooted for him. It was also a way for brambleclaw to proof himself to be better than his father. But brambleclaw was still a bit young to be deputy. Brackenfur was way more experienced and capable for the job. He had proven himself multiple times and was always looking for a way to grow as a person. It just seems unfair for Bramblestar to be chosen before brackenfur, even though brackenfur was older and wiser than him.

I was reading Power of 3 with my mom and Brackenfur said something and she just goes "he's the one who should've been made deputy. Brambleclaw sucks"
I was SO mad when they chose brambleclaw over my boy Brackenfur tbh :/
Longtail should have been deputy... or Mousefur... or Dustpelt or Sandstorm or Brightheart. Brackenfur is nice and all, but he literally does not have a personality. I love Brackenfur, but like early Ashfur he really only serves as a satellite character.
Longtail and Mousefur were both elders by that point, but that still left:
* Thornclaw
* Dustpelt
* Sandstorm
* Ashfur
* Cloudtail (if the atheism thing wouldn't have been an issue)
* And, of course, Brackenfur.
I didn't mention cats like Brightheart because she was apprentice-less. Same with Sootfur, Rainwhisker, and Sorreltail (who was pregnant anyway).
