How many Pokemon beat Bugsy without Optional Battles? - Episode 7

- Minimum Battles is the ultimate challenge. 165 Pokemon beat Falkner on Minimum Battles, but now it's time to find out how they do against Rival 2 and Bugsy!
On my main channel @RBYPokemonChallenges , I have already completed this challenge with all 151 Pokemon on Gen 1, but Gen 2 presents a massively different challenge - sleep and Wrap were nerfed, there's no Gen 1 miss (1/256 glitch), and all the trainers have better AI. But Minimum Battles might just be possible with some effort and ingenuity.

You know something funny? Girafarig is going to be just fine on Morty.
That's true, immune to Ghost and resistant to Psychic is crazy. Maybe Curse gets us?
The ghastly is basically the same as brock in gen 1. It just weeds out all the pokemon that can only learn normal moves. Most pokemon can at least learn mud slap
Yeah, I always found it a bit weird that they'd give the Rival 2 a Pokemon that walls so much.

Girafarig: Rival 2 is easily defeated with Confusion. The key to beating Bugsy is Stomp and perhaps a Fury Cutter miss. PASS
Exeggutor: Hypnosis strats and some luck from either sleep length, confusion, or misses gives Exeggutor the opening against Bugsy even with 4x-super-effective Fury Cutter. Rival 2 also needs some sleep luck but is doable. PASS
Exeggcute: Slow speed and a lack of an attack other than Barrage means it can't even get past a random Rocket grunt with a Zubat and Ekans without heavy luck. FAIL
Hypno: Good sleep luck gets it past Bugsy and Rival 2. PASS
Drowzee: Good sleep luck gets it past Bugsy, but Rival 2 needs Struggle to even hit Gastly, giving it too few options to get past the following Zubat. FAIL
Kingler: Bugsy can be beaten with some luck from a crit or Fury Cutter miss, which is good, as Fury Cutter is the key to beating Rival 2's Bayleef. PASS
Electrode: Sonicboom easily deals with Scyther, but it needs struggle to get past Rival 2's Gastly, and this gives it nothing to use against Bayleef. FAIL
Gligar: No Mud-Slap? No problem! Sand Attack disrupts Bugsy's Scyther's Fury Cutter, and then Gligar can use Fury Cutter itself to deal with Rival 2. PASS
Marowak: Bugsy requires some luck through either weird AI choices, a crit, or a Fury Cutter miss. Rival 2 also requires some luck with Mud-Slap against Bayleef, but is also possible within reason since Razor Leaf is only a 3-hit without a crit. PASS
Hitmontop: Bugsy can be beaten with some help from the AI not choosing Fury Cutter too much. Mud-Slap is needed against Rival 2's Gastly, and then high Special Defense makes Bayleef not too hard. PASS
Hitmonchan: Use Agility to outspeed Scyther and overpower it with Swift. Has effectively the same Rival 2 fight as Hitmontop. PASS
Hitmonlee: Meditate allows Hitmonlee to easily defeat Bugsy with Swift and Rival 2 with a variety of moves. PASS
Lickitung: Using a combination of Supersonic, Lick for paralysis, and Mud-Slap against Rival 2, with some luck it can keep opponents from doing anything against it even when it only has 20 base power moves for damage. PASS
Weezing: Bugsy can be beaten with poison luck, but with only Smog against Gastly, Weezing isn't beating Rival 2 with its own moveset, and with Selfdestruct in its moveset, no TM moves to overwrite it with, and no Revives to buy, it can't even use Struggle strats. FAIL
Dunsparce: Rage continues to be the MVP, though of course Mud-Slap is needed against Rival 2's Gastly. PASS
Steelix: Learns Rock Throw just in time for Bugsy's Scyther, and then that move plus some Mud-Slap luck can get past Rival 2's Croconaw. PASS
Final Results:

Interesting to see how many of these just lose from not being able to hit ghastly! I will say on the girafarig, palandromes aren't usually pronounced the same either way. Xanax has a different sound on each X example. I don't think Kingler's gillotine will ever actually be useful though, given it automatically fails it the pokemon's level is higher than yours.
Fair enough. I'll think about the pronunciation. Guillotine could just make some random early Pokemon easier, but definitely won't be good against any boss fights.
Yeah, Gastly is a wall for some, especially if they only have normal/poison moves and not enough attack and HP to struggle
The Miracle Seed is on Route 32.
Yeah, there were not damaging grass moves, so no use for Miracle Seed this time

Palindromes don't have to have similar sounds. Racecar, for example. So I think Girafarig should be JUH-rafarig.
It's interesting that we're seeing a couple Pokémon fail on the Rockets. I feel like this is the only time that's ever going to happen.
Fury Cutter strats...might be the only chance Rhydon and Kabutops have. If they can survive one Razor Leaf, they can one-shot with their high attack power.
Marowak will do well against Whitney, and I think Morty will be more than possible with a Quick Claw thanks to its high attack and the low defense of the ghosts. Rival 3 may be tough for the same reasons as Rival 2 but the same strategy should work. After that, I don't think it struggles much until Pryce.
Selfdestruct blocks Struggle strats! That actually makes it _worse_ than useless in a solo run, it actively impedes options.
Yeah, SelfDestruct, Perish Song, etc are worse than Splash in this context 😂.
I can feel you on the palindromes, so I gonna pronounce it like giraffe from here on out.
Fury Cutter strates could be OP in some spots. It will be interesting to see.

Whitney, Morty, and Rival 3. The Radio Tower quest has Rival 4. Victory Road has GSC's version of Rival Fival. Mt. Moon has optional Rival 6. Indigo Plateau has Rival 7 on certain days.
Yeah, the next 2 gyms are going to be the biggest challenges I think. Usually Rival 4 and Rival 5 aren't that bad in GSC

I wonder if you're going to be able to one shot in the miltank by building up Fury cutter on the Clefairy with the Kingler
That will basically be the strat to try there. Fury Cutter strates could carry a few Pokemon in Gym 3, but likely they break down on Gym 4 since Curse would make setup impossible
You could technically get to using struggle on the Gastly. A move you choose on a sleep turn can still be affected by Spite. Of course the luck required would be pretty painful, as you'd need to be asleep from Hypnosis, stay asleep while selecting Self-Destruct, and have the Gastly use Spite. (And be able to deplete all other moves PP) but you could go in with only PP on Smog and Self-Destruct, spam Smog until he puts you to sleep, then spam Self-Destruct hoping for Spite. Still painful, and you might still lose to Crocanaw, but it's an option.

Bug and Fighting resist each other. Gen 4 physical/special split helped out Hitmonchan a little. Gen V gave High Jump Kick a significant buff which helped Hitmonlee and Hitmontop a bit.
For sure. Gen 4 probably improved Hitmonchan a ton!
surely if you're going to pronounce both G's in Girafarig the same you'd pronounce the last one like the first instead of the first one like the last?

The Hitmons might need Struggle for Gastly.
Gligar and Dunsparce might not make it past Bayleef, less sure on them.

Girafarig was better than I expected, but not that much better. Normal types are good in gen 2.
Exeggutor went as expected. That 4x weakness is a problem, and that's a bad sign for Exeggcute.
Hypno went way smoother than expected.
Exeggcute...I expected it to get further. That was sad.
Drowsee just...ain't happening. Better than the eggs, but that is a disappointing amount of damage...and it beat scyther somehow! Gastly is still an unsolveable problem.
Kingler makes good use of Fury Cutter.
Electrode is a shame, but it was going to happen somewhere. It's not known for it's coverage.
Yeah, there are a lot of reasonably strong Pokemon that are starting to hit the wall due to coverage. And they hit the Gen 1 psychic types hard in Gen 2

When sleeping is it last used move or last selected move. Can ghastly spite down the pp if you had 1 smog went to sleep from hypnosis then got self destruct spited? Or is wheezing slower then ghastly before fighting bugsy
I need to test that more, but I believe Spite works on the last used move.
