You are such an inspiration to me! I work outside of the home as well as being responsible for homemaking. I have learned so much from you. I regularly use my instant pot to cook whole chickens for meals during the week now. This not only saves me money but helps me provide more nutritious meals for my family. Thank you!

You can definitely handle the canning. I had to tackle it for the same reason…to keep from wasting the harvest. We had SO many tomatoes. It’s not as big and scary as everyone makes it out to be.

I canned for the first time. I'm in my 50s. We had a bumper crop of persian cucumbers. I made dill pickles. 9 quarts full! So happy for my first try.

      @@homemadesimplewithlori
2 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
      small handful dill
      1 teaspoons mustard seed
      1 teaspoon coriander
      1 teaspoon fennel
      ½ teaspoon ground pepper
      1Tablespoons sea salt
In each quart jar, I added the above ingredient to each jar. I estimated the amount of liquid I would need for each jar. Equal parts 5% vinegar and water heated on the stove and poured into filled jars. I water bathed them for 10 minutes. Pulled them out and let cool overnight on the counter. I'm sure more experienced canners may have a better recipe than me. Next, I need to find more jars and can bread and butter pickles. If we have too many cucumbers, I will try relish.

@@jacki6301 nice recipe. I make spicy garlic dill pickles and let them marinate in the fridge for at least 3 days. I actually sell them and use the money for my household. My coworkers love them too. I can a few jars for my family each year cause we don’t eat a lot of pickles

I just loved the lizard story!!! Had a great picture in my mind!! 😂. And canning? You can absolutely do it! I’m in my 60’s and when I was in my 30’s and feeding my family I got the ball blue book of canning(had no computer back then) and I tell young moms that I read the book, followed the directions and prayed to the good Lord that I didn’t kill my family!!!😂 and He’s been faithful!!! You can do it!!!

South Alabama here. 50-60 years ago my mom went to the chicken coop to gather eggs, Long story short, she was almost hands on the eggs when she saw a chicken snake wrapped around the eggs. Harmless? Maybe but never cared for eggs since then. Lots of love from one Alabama (Auburn) girl to another Bama girl! 🪱

Question: I am on the Eastern Shore and the heat index is reaching near 110.
My chickens have stopped laying due to the heat. Is there any advice you can give me to help them keep cool and to start laying again?
I am making and freezing corn in muffin tins for them as a frozen treat, and they are afraid of the fan we put out for them. Thanks much and be blessed!

    • @homemadesimplewithlori

Mine slows down too. I’m definitely not a chicken expert. I just let mine free range and go with the egg-laying flow. They don’t like to lay much in the heat of summer or cold of winter so I just have extra chickens 😂😂😂. I’m sure there’s good advice about that subject on RUclips though. Sorry I can’t help much.

On canning, you can do it! Tomatoes are the easiest veggies to can, IMO. Remember on green beans that you need to pressure can them for safety. Tomatoes can be done in a boiling water bath since they are acidic. I used to can when I had a larger garden. I'll still do it if I get enough hot peppers -- hot sauce and pepper jelly.

I can only wish to have that cheap of a feed bill. I don’t have any chickens right now but between the 2 cows, 7 goats and 1 horse I spent over $300 in hay, grain, mineral blocks and a colic preventative(horse). I know that I have to go buy more hay and grain before the month is over too. I will be buying a squeeze of hay(84 bales) either tomorrow or Monday and they will deliver it and it should last us at least 4 months. I will be selling all my bucks pretty soon too(3 of them) and my 4 does are all pregnant I believe and due to kid next month, dairy goats so we can milk them and make soap and cheese.
