    Star signs are a great idea, and I love the sound of the origin story. I’m liking what they say about all the supplementary material to the deck itself, but Ironically I feel like there might be “too many things” in this set! Surely, there’s something for everyone, but few people will use everything, which makes the price harder to get past. Good gift, tough buy. I look forward to Nerd Immersion’s inevitable unboxing video!

      Despite what they say, the cards did have an established origin before, they are magical Netherese playing cards that grew in power after Netherese fell, and Euryale never had a human sister, she's a character from a novel called Lady of Poison, she has two sisters, one of them named Sthenno, I'll guess the third is just Medusa because they were obviously named after the mythological medusas from greek myth, they've had creatures named after one that had the creature that they originated from before, theres a Marilith named Marilith, ect, and I'm guessing Euryale never had anything to do with the deck and she probably isn't nice or has autism and the only connection she had to the deck is that she shared the name of a card name by coincidence.
      This "Euryale" seems like a self-insert from what I've read and seen.
      Likely they didn't ever read up on what they were trying to do or they're trying to sneak in a retcon and hope that no one will catch them doing it.
      You can look these things up on the Forgotten Realms wiki to verify.

    • @frogtalks2814
      @frogtalks2814 7 месяцев назад +8

      @@duckmanguy8575But you’re forgetting, that’s their origin in the Forgotten Realms. This is their canon Greyhawk origin, as their appearance there is functionally loreless. Therefore, the two characters we see telling the story of the Deck (Euryale and Asteria) are new Greyhawk characters, distinct from any similar ones in Faerun. Also, Euryale isn’t the one with autism. Just wanted to clarify this.

      They mention that you do build the deck as you see fit, so you can limit the cards that you think may be detrimental to your campaign, and in that respect I think having too many cards is less of an issue than too few, not that I really think shaving a dozen cards would have reduced the cost by that much. I think the presentation is more what's driving the cost up given these could have been just regular ol poker sized cards

      @WittyDroog 7 месяцев назад +5

      @@KristoVaher It isn't, but it's thematic and the methodology is its unique novelty. The Deck of Many Things has ALWAYS been something that could be reduced to just a roll on a table but for years it's always been more fun to present the deck to players and have them draw a card. Conversely you could always take a random table and write them on index cards.
      I love random table generators for adventures be it the Tome of Adventure Design or Sine Nomine's line of "Without Number" books but this is also another fun variant on the idea

  • @JoshuaGarien
    @JoshuaGarien 7 месяцев назад +11

    It would be nice if you could do something like this with the Tarokka deck in Ravenloft. I think that another Ravenloft supplement should be in the works for this. Van Richten's Guide was a good start with the into different horror genres, but expanding each of your campaign settings that aren't the Forgotten Realms are definitely needed. I like the three-book sets for campaign settings, but they need to be more substantial.

    • @WittyDroog
      @WittyDroog 7 месяцев назад +1

      It's long out of print and hard to find now but for 3.5 there was a Tarokka deck made under the Sword & Sorcery brand for Ravenloft that had it's own "adventure designer" using the deck. It was not nearly as detailed and rich as what they're describing here but it was pretty slick at the time for coming up with adventure hook inspiration

I really hope that it pulls it all off!
    It's pricey, sure, but I would rather buy one set at 100 bucks that lives up to the promise of this release a year than 3 books that have the sort of half-baked level of detail that some recent releases have. IF this lives up to the hype (and I can feel myself getting on board that train), then it easily could contain a year's worth of content in it!

  • @WittyDroog

    For years one of the biggest complaints I, and MANY others, have had regarding 5e is that while it's fun to play it's not really fun to DM and the OSR scene has been leeching GM's left and right. Now there's certainly a lot of things that goes into that issue BUT watching this video has sold me on the deck, specifically hearing that not only does the deck help with adventure inspiration but that the same 9 cards could provide wildly different experiences. Personally I am a huge fan of having tables and randomizing elements and then "scrying" the meaning and how they connect and something like this for DM's has been sorely lacking in 5e. I love using the far more primative rules from B/X to generate adventure hooks and this looks like a lot of fun, even just using the cards on the fly for a kick of inspiration and randomness the DM gets to enjoy. Reminds me of the Ravenloft Tarokka deck that was made during 3.5 for Sword & Sorcery

    1:40 In solo tabletop RPG play there's already the concept of an oracle, which is basically a series of tables you can roll on in order to make any decisions a DM would be expected to make (answer questions, flesh out characters, determine enemy actions, and so on). It seems they made a system that turns the deck itself into an oracle (or at least a partial one, because of the adventure spread), which is a really cool idea.

    There are a couple of things I don't understand -
    Is the main book only for the 22 card deck of many things? Ie each chapter has lots of variant effects for each card drawn?
    Does this mean that the BIGGER deck, the one with 66 cards, does not have as many options per card drawn?
    Also when creating a random adventure with the cards, do you use the full 66 card deck? Or only the 22 one? ty!

    It's funny that there's a werecreature thieve's guild, because this is exactly what I did with Meredin Sandyfoot in Spelljammer, shame I'm in the process of wrapping up that campaign, but it sounds like it might be useful!
    Still not thrilled with the page count, but the cards sound fun, might make it some decent value for money. I'm actually cautiously optimistic for once

    Question: Something I've always wondered about the original version of the Deck of Many Things, if instead of using it yourself, you trick the BBEG to swipe at you, but he/she/it comes into contact with the whole deck [well of the cards you have] and those that land face up [good/bad/neutral happen to the BBEG?

    • @jhemp
      @jhemp 7 месяцев назад

      Technically you have to declare how many cards you intend to draw BEFORE drawing. Also it is kinda still skewed toward the positive so I'm not sure that would make things easier even if you did pull it off.

    • @luminous3558
      @luminous3558 7 месяцев назад

      Doesnt really change the fact that your campaign is getting derailed because most of the cards completely change the situation.

    • @jhemp
      @jhemp 7 месяцев назад

      @luminous3558 Only if you let it derail your campaign you can honestly come up with numerous ways to not have that happen WITHOUT derailing your campaign. Pretty much all you gotta do is treat all of the cards as a bit of fortune telling. A level 4 fighter, an adventurer shows up at the homebase and asks to be your squire after a mission. Your character solo fights a reaper of death, next time they go unconscious, have a solo battle within the players mind, and if they lose they die or if they win bring them back with 1 hp, etc. The 50,000 xp, just have the whole party share the boon equally by making an encounter or set of encounters reward more xp. When planehopping is required for your campaign, they come across an artifact or trap that locks them in an extra dimensional space with JUST ENOUGH info the party can locate their friend and in order to escape they find themselves on the plane you wanted them to be on.
      It's only as game breaking when A. You let them keep the deck and/or B. you allow whatever to happen immediately without wrapping it into the narrative.
      If it were me, I'd make it so the player encounters a singular NPC with the deck and offers a chance to draw, but ONLY once each person and obviously don't allow them to draw like 10 cards each. Preferably, only let one person draw at all.
      It's really not that bad if you use your head.

    • @QuantumCairo

      As someone with autistism I find it interesting how they could include an autistic interpretation from a DnD viewpoint. They'd have to be a damn good writer or an autistic individual writing that character to have very specific connections to DnDs plane and not come off as tropes from this plane.
      Though, I think I wouldn't like to know directly or be told the character is autistic or whatever the DnD equivalent would be. Instead I'd like to come to that conclusion, the character may be perceived as autistic within the DnD universe, on my own.
      I guess a better case of show don't tell...
