Driving techniques is the easily and possibly biggest improvement you can do to gain fuel efficiencies. I drive some thirsty cars and I can either make a full tank last nearly 500ks or drive it like a proper wanker and get less than 250ks.

Yep its funny watching people floor it past me up to a red light or round about because they're not looking ahead and then have to come to an abrupt stop while i time it right and cruise past them without really needing to slow down or speed up more than 10 ks an hour. Thats one of the biggest factors in fuel economy. Consistent speed and keeping momentum.

100% spot on - so spot on that you’ve compelled me to “like” and comment.
For reference, I have gotten 900kms out of an Acadia on three separate trips and it’s current average is 800kms of range. I’ve eked 750kms out of a Corvette on half a dozen occasions (yes the latest C8 model) and all because of what you said - driving style.
I see these hybrid drivers racing like they’re in Formula One & cannot help but think that they’re ironically using more fuel despite the economy advantages that a hybrid affords.

I love this sort of testing! I didn't know how the ECO and PWR buttons worked! And it made so much sense!
As for only the driver's window down, I think the wind enters through the window but since all of the other windows are closed, the cabin itself works like a parachute pulling the car back, therefore putting more stress on the engine and thus a lot less fuel economy!
Also, that Hilux GR Sports looks amazing! I'd love if Toyota did a GR Hilux competitor to the Ford Raptors! ❤️

One more worthwhile efficiency comparison is to drive like a late tradie vs a chauffeur. The late tradie jumps lanes every time a car in the next lane passes them and accelerates hard toward red lights.
The chauffer hangs back, observes, plans and uses acceleration sense to pass the late tradie at green.
    Up to the challenge?

Hey @bradleyfryer5563 and @CarExpertAus , very interesting to see the difference. Have not properly compared or tested this back-to-back. I drive a Hilux 3L D4D and have a tonneau cover. What I have found from driving highway, is with the bed open and consciously trying to drive “efficiently” and keeping my speed below 100km/h, I tend to get about 11km/L (9.09L/100km). Compared to driving with the tonneau cover, I am able to drive “normally” and drive at our national speed limit of 120km/h and the efficiency stays above 12km/L (8.33L/100km). - This is driving the same distance and road from town to the farm, 242km’s of highway with a couple of passes.

I prefer to tow a tool trailer rather than loading the ute and filling the roof racks of ladders. Fuel is probably similar, but the wear on tyres and brakes is shared. The suspension is happy and I can disconnect when I'm home. I see so many tradies daily drive their ute/van loaded with the best part of a tonne of stuff.

    • @stephensmith2027
      @stephensmith2027 8 месяцев назад

Not really, fuel use would be heaps different. With the 500kg simulated here it doesn't add any drag, and the effect at a constant speed is minimal because of inertia (stop start is a different story). Adding roof racks/pod OR towing a trailer adds massively to aerodynamic drag which would impact fuel use much more than the additional weight

Instead of just running a constant rate around the 5km bowl, tun off at one point to do som “urban driving” and then get back on the bowl to complete. I don't understand the A/C difference on "Max". Vehicle A/C systems work by blending inside and outside air to adjust the temperature. Once the A/C compressor is engaged, the settings on the fan and temperature are pretty much irrelevant. You should get the same economy, regardless of the settings.
Are Australian diesels DPF? That would be a factor. Simply changing the A/C dial should have no impact.

I’d have thought Eco/Pwr to make little difference cruising and more difference when stop start driving - with the exception of Eco perhaps using less A/C and putting the vehicle in a higher gear to save fuel.
Savings would be more pronounced when accelerating and such as power should hold gears longer and change the throttle map with Eco dulling it and using higher gears earlier in the rev range. Just my thoughts.
They do say that using A/C uses about 11% more fuel (due to the load on the engine) and a window down also uses about 11% more fuel (due to aerodynamic drag). Having A/C on and the window down will use about 22% more fuel. This does all depend on the vehicle in question.
Having all the windows down was a little surprising as I thought it would be worse still.
Basically, just keep your windows up as I do and run the A/C (because having all your windows down on a hot day Won’t cool you).
Should have used a tonneau cover over the empty tray and full tray too because there would have been some drag reduction with the load in the back.

For the tyre pressure bit, I would suggest the following.
    1) trip computer calculates speed based on the “standard” wheel diameter.
    2) when you decrease the tyre pressure, you actually reduced the effective wheel diameter but the trip computer does not know.
    3) therefore, you would be testing at slower actual speed (that gives you less resistance) and shorter distance (trip computer calculate distance based on un-deflated tyres), both factors under-estimating the fuel consumption.
    4) similarly, running over-inflated tyres gives you higher actual speed and actual distance, hence over-estimating the fuel consumption.
    5) suggest run the deflated tyre at slightly higher indicated speed and the inflated tyre at slightly lower indicated speed. How much? Measure the distance between the centre of the wheel and the ground.
    6) trip computer fuel economy should then be compensated by a factor to account for the difference between the distance registered by the trip computer and the actual trip distance.

Driving with tyre pressure 20psi vs 42psi: At 60km/hr, it is only a saving of 0.9L/100kms. In terrains where you need lower pressure, it is not worth saving fuel compromising traction. There may not be much difference in fuel consumption at higher speeds but lower pressures can affect braking distance, tyre damage and safety. These are observations of 4wd on variuos terrains and on freeway.

    • @bens5186
      @bens5186 8 месяцев назад +2

@@orangejuicepony6881 incorrect. Just think of it at extremes.
Flat tyre from centre of the wheel to the ground will be effectively the rim size + the thickness of the tread pattern and rubber.
A massively over inflated tyre only touches in the centre of the tread (check wear patterns)
If you want to do a practical test you can measure distance from the ground to centre of the wheel at various pressures then do the math or simply run at low and high pressures and do a GPS speed verification. Higher sidewall tyres will show a greater variation.
Edit: centrifugal force will throw the tread out a little at high rotational speed but will still have a smaller radius and therefore a smaller effective diameter (vertical measurement) and thus circumference, it’s a 3d shape not 2d

No.. YOU are simply WRONG because...
It used same amount of fuel because, the amount of drag due to open windows reduced aerodynamics of the car thus, increasing fuel/power requirement of vehicle.
If you wanna save some fuel then turn off AC and open the opposite corner windows of car just 2-3cm... this will enable airflow while reducing the air drag.

😂 guess what the car does when cruise control is on and drag increases? Yep, it uses more fuel!

You should have shown the posers, how much the big tyres, bullbar and roof racks added.
That would have been a good laugh

I can’t believe you don’t care to give us one single reason to take you seriously. Why is so hard to disconnect fuel tank and connect plastic bottle fool of fuel on the roof of the car? Are you really expecting from us to trust you when you just say things? If you are Ford Ranger owner in 2023 are you really stable individual?
