You are the first person that made this so easy to understand.
I wish you do more content where in each episode you address the different scenes and talk about your creative choices for mobile filmmakers, your content is amazing as it shows the level of your expertise
Way ahead of time 🤘
This channel deserves more than a million subs tbh.
Cool video. You are so close too 50K now! Great job! 🙌🏻
Thanks bud. Yup 50k landmark approaching 😃
@@SiHorrocks You totally deserve it for all the work you put in!
I always thought Superman was clean shaven, had short hair and wore a cape, I guess not lol. I just watched this again and got more out of it the second time.
Am I a bird, am I a plane... 😄
I've watched this three different times to reinforce my understanding of photography "basics" as applied to smartphone video. Each time I've gotten a little better educated. Thanks.
Wow! Talk about a master class. I've been slowly trying to educate myself on how to properly use manual settings and this is the single best video I have seen by far. Thank you so much! I have really been liking your videos but this time I'm definitely clicking that subscribe button. Really nice work!
thank you. Welcome aboard!
Hi I love you your teachings question what kind of program are you using for editing
Thank you very much for this masterclass! It’s the first time somebody explains the 180 degree rule so clear and simple that even an engineer (me) can understand it. Congratulations for this video!
It's okay, you guys just like to overthink and analyze things to death! Lol
Holy smokes! Simon you came on my podcast Cinema After Dark a few moons ago and I was shocked to find you here. Your channel is AMAZING! Amazing! Amazing! Please continue to shine. Excellent work.
heyyy how ya doing? Thank you :)
You are a master in all ur video, composed, explanation in details, everything about all your videos are just perfect. I have never skipped any of ur videos, instead i rewatch them again. Bless you
So nice of you, thank you
Just started doing music videos with a smart phone. So much to learn. Thanks for the tutorials.
From start to end, I learned a lot. Thanks man
Fantastic, thanks.
Hi simon...sorry I was out of town on a trip which turned to disaster, anyhow nice to see your videos again...thankyou
Welcome back. Hope the trip wasn't too traumatic
Great video and perfect explanations. Huge thanks for this, you are doing a magnificent work.
Geez, that was a huge masterclass!
Subbed - came here on YT recommendation. Great channel I can see hours in the near future stuck on your channel 👍 thx very informative.
Firstly, I enjoy all your videos. However, those that get me the most involved are those that you explain videography by referring/showing to other movies as well as your own clips. Thank you
.
Wow thank you so well explained. Thank you once more
You always inspire me to pursue my passion.

Preparing to practice shooting my short film for my youtube channel. Thank you so much for your videos!
Dear Master, I'm ur biggest fan from India, who keep satisfying his hunger to learn minutiae of videography. Tons of 🙏
I love this channel, cause it teaches me how to film.
Thank you very much.
This video is a full course on not only videography but photography as well! Excellent and many thanks for making this!
Interesting to hear you’ve been an Indy filmmaker for all those years and now using a cellphone! I had some experience with 16mm many…many years ago. Recently sold my Nikon D800 and a number of lenses. I use the iPhone Pro Max and loving your videos!
Perfect explanation. This should be sponsored by filmic
just discovered your channel, and I have to say it's is;ply the best one.
thank you so much for putting so much effort
An awesome educational video!
Man, you are the best!!! Thank you!!
very very useful perfect guidelines to shooting person
thanks sir
i just got here and i love how you teach! thanks soooo much
You're so welcome!
Amazing job! I didn't know a thing about photography and I've learned so much from this video! Thanks a lot!
Awesome sharing. Well done mate! Thank you for your time, wisdom and practicality in explaining.
Such informative tutorial. It is so well explained in details. Thank you so much for sharing the information.
Another great video! Thank you and keep them coming!
Fantastic, just learning!
so good! Thanks for this!! this is really great!
This was so great. I feel like I should have paid for that class. I'll pay with a subscribe.
Very helpful video. Great work.
Great, informative video once again. Thank You.
This video should be sent to every person who buys Filmic Pro, really clear and jargon-free
Concepts are well explained and simplified. I used to underestimate power of mobile phone filming but it seems like a game changer now
Just brilliant!
What a great video 🙌
Great job Simon 😁
Thanks my friend 🥰
Solid video once again. Thank you.
You are the best at explaining video making, the BEST and it is not even close! I have been watching many other channels and they do have good info but no one has the natural capability you have. You speak a perfect speed (not to fast and not too slow), you break things down in a way, even a monkey would understand lol. If you ever publish a course, I will buy it immediately. I may be interested in private coaching.
Thank you so much 💓
Thanks - good refresher. One thing that makes things difficult is you can't lock your shutter speed but leave your ISO on auto. The other pieces of the picture not covered here are 8 vs 10 bit and the use of Vlog. I'll poke through your other videos to see if it's covered elsewhere.
Amazing video, so much knowledge being shared. I found your channel as I was looking for videos comparing some phone gimbals, and I was pleasantly surprised to find how in depth you go into techniques and elements that can help elevate one’s skills when filming. Love it!
PS - I see what you did with the Fight Club scene… ;) Loved that little Easter egg, true to the film itself.
thanks for this great video!
Love your subreddit my man
This is like officially my film school
As a photographer, I applaude you for this excellent tutorial
that was so useful ! thanks you
Thankyou so much sir 🤗🙏
Great tutorial! Thank you very much!
You are welcome!
Really clear explanations, and you speak clearly and slowly, unlike some RUclipsrs who speak at too many Words Per Second! Particularly useful re the shutter speed since I am more experienced with still photography than video. I will try the Filmic Pro app, but there have been many negative reviews about it recently, but it seems straightforward to get a refund if it crashes on my phone like others are saying it does on theirs.
thanks Ian. If you have an Android phone McPro24fps is maybe more reliable but it's also more complicated
Thank a lot it’s very helpful 🤗🤗
Awesome 👏 really wanted to learn videography with iPhone hope can get lesson from professional if there is any suggestions
Great explainations
Simon , you are the real MVP! 💯 I started my mobil film career weeks ago..and ive learned so much from you. Thank you so much!! Ive got a question for ya mate. I purchased filmic pro with cinematographer..and davinci.. what would be the color space from filmic pro and my samsung s22?
Great tutorial! Even a deaf man can learn from your explanations. I'm a newbie into mobile videography though I have a canon 5d mark iii with all sort of lens but only for photography. I recently decided to use mobile phone for video because they are lighter in weight when compared to dslr. I have the Filmic Pro and still being a dummy in it.☹
Thanks once again
Very inspirational…! Cheers…
I keep coming back to your videos and learning new tricks and skills.. can you suggest a video I can watch for still photos..
Think I need a couple of beers after that session!
Excellent video and explanations on each area of photography, With all these variable frame rates used for effects, would you ever encounter audio sync issues?
I would like a tutorial on how to use this app to record a live band indoor gig🙏🏻
thanks you!
Thank you !!!!
What is the best shutter speed? It's good to realise that broadcast television is 25fps (US) or 30fps (Europe). It's not more cinematic to use 24fps. You will not see a difference, but it can cause problems since many devices are not able to output natively 24fps. The reason the cinematographic industry used lower fps, was to save money. Film stock is expensive and shooting at a lower fps saved a lot of money. So most shot at 18-24 fps. At a later time and because of the need of sound synchronization, 24fps became the norm. Therefore, I recommend setting the shutter speed at 25 or 30fps. Higher if you need slow-mo action or for specific needs.
Thank you.
非常专业!
谢谢!
So glad I’ve come across your channel, I have a feeling I’m going to learn so much from you. I create content with my children with the fun things we do etc, but now I’ve jut got the iPhone 12 Pro I wanted to delve a little more in how I can improve and take what is essentially my hobby to a better level. Certainly going to try and look just for an ND filter if their is one that I can just clip onto my phone you recommend that would be helpful thank you. And thank you for your time in reading my comment. Much appreciated. I’m also looking into a suitable kind of selfie stick but one that I could also use as a tripod.
this is a good starter ND set: geni.us/iDqZx7b
@@SiHorrocks thank you. Much appreciated.
On ND filters, should I get all three or which one is the best compromise? Thanks in advance
YOUR THE BEST
Excellent video . Can u make a video talking about moire patterns and how to avoid them ?
maybe try recording highest resolution and try to reduce sharpening
Thank you
Very good
What do you think about 11 pro max? Which is the best phone for video among note20 ultra and 11 pro max..
I am new to this channel and Filmic Pro. Enjoying both. I am super happy with Filmic pro, but I found it hard to keep it on the right shutter speed when i was moving from shot to shot, changing lenses, Frame rate etc. It looks like in auto, it defaults to the double rule if it can, but if it can’t it adjusts the Shutter Speed away from the double rule to get the right exposure. Then the process of doing it manually is fiddly. A more detailed video in this area would be helpful. I think that I have just talked myself into buying an ND filter :-)
This dynamic tone mapping... Now I need to know when to take advantage of it and when not to. I would imagine its best to use it outside in broad daylight but not indoors. What about at sunset. Just found out it cannot be disabled on iphone :-)
Powli
Many thansk for your amazing work!!! I have a question that i have not solved until now. How we can avoid the picture trelbling when we move the camera fast? For exapmple at the present video at 23:28. Walls or furniture appear not so smooth in the final video. Once again congratulations on inspiring so many people around the world.
slower shutter speed
Would you recommend to use filmic pro if i have the iphone 13 pro max? as it has the new cinematic mode i wouldn't want to let it go to waste :/
So thankful for you, Simon. Question: how do I get my ISO down to the same number from shoot to shoot?
HELPFUL
Commenter number 7!!!!!!
luckkyyy 😃
Thanks so much for your video series. I've learned so much. With the Filmic Pro update, there are new choices under the stabilization settings for Cinematic stabilization. I'm using iPhone 11 Pro. I know Filmic Pro always says to turn off the stabilization when using a gimbal. Why is that? My guess is the two systems -- iPhone and Filmic Pro stabilization -- would then be competing, and you'd drain your phone and gimbal battery faster. But I've tried this out, turning on Cinematic in stabilization while using my Osmo gimbal and it gives incredibly smooth shots. Do you think I can go ahead and use it? Perhaps just for short clips.
I nearly always use iPhone stabilisation with a gimbal. If it looks good, then it's good.
I think in the past there were more issues. And some phones have bad inbuilt stabilisation. But I think newer top range phones are work ok. If there's a problem, you might see it kind of sticking when you are panning
@@SiHorrocks Thanks so much for your reply! Good information.
Hi. Im very new to all this. I need to know regards frame rates. Do I shoot everything 24fps and shoot separate 60fps clips for slowing g down. Or do I just set phone on 60fps for the whole shoot.
Am into this content
Not sure if it just on my iPhone - I saved a profile with 120fps, after that there was no way to bring shutter back to 1/48 even after changing FPS, Resolution or even RESET... only thing that worked was - delete app and reinstall
Hello Simon, love the video and content, I learned a lot from you, I recently acquired a Samsung galaxy note 10+,mostly for the camera, so far I'm loving the phone, still learning it. My last name is Horrocks as well and my father was born in Scotland then came to America while he was young. I'm very curious if we maybe related especially since Horrocks isn't that common of a name, at least here in the USA. Love to hear back from you and your thoughts on it. Take care.
Jim Horrocks
hi Jim! Good to hear from another Horrocks. I think it's not too uncommon a name in the UK. It comes from around the Manchester area, I believe. My Grandad worked for Rolls Royce in the city of Derby, other than that I don't know too much about the family history on the Horrocks side. I know of 3 other Simon Horrocks so I guess not too rare a name. One is in New Zealand...
I think you're an excellent cameramen you really know how to shoot.😀 Also there is something in your grading i don't like. Something with the white balance
thanks for the feedback 😀
Physics of optical is fascinating, though most smartphones and now even professional digital cameras are using computational photography to simulate that essential physic. Why shorter lens have deep depth of field and why the widest the aperture the shallower the depth of field? There are optical physic answers to that. In smartphones, the aperture, which is fixed, and focal length are given in equivalent 35mm full frame equivalent. BUT, these are NOT equivalent for the actual depth of field. As the sensor is much smaller and the actual focal length much smaller too, the depth of field is much deeper than the equivalent full frame. This is why smartphone manufacturers introduce artificial bokeh (aka depth shallow depth of field) to simulate shallow depth of field, with mixed results.
How did u export out these large files ?? Pro res ??
Good 👍.
Nice
how do i export the Iphone video format to a computer?
How did you capture sound? That is one thing that haunts me.
on Protake I cant seem to get it into 60fps at 4K. can you help? I have deleted and reloaded. I am at 14.6 on iphone and current protake.software. on your video review I see you were able to have that choice. mine stops at 30 fps. how can you contact the makers?
So, here a question. What smartphone in 2021 under $500/£500/€500 (apart from an iPhone or an old Pixel) has the most accurate front and selfie camera photo quality in terms of skin tones and dynamic range? I will wait. Cheers.
Curious if filmic pro is still needed with the iPhone 13 pro cinematic mode?
they do very different things
Did you edit silent eye on phone
