I'm unfamiliar with Al Franken, but that's pretty funny. I thought those guys were great. They seemed like they could have a spin off off movie of their own if they wanted.
Also, the police officer going through Winthrop's things and tasted the pcp...that's Frank Oz the director of movies such as Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The Muppets Take Manhattan. Also one of Jim Henson's associates that went far back, he was the voice and puppeteer of such Muppets as Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Bert, and he was also Yoda. However, no one seems to ever recognize Coleman the butler, that's Denholm Elliott who played Marcus in the Indiana Jones movies.

I like that you followed the advice to se Trading Places before Coming to America. The Dukes have a small part but it makes sense when you have seen Trading Places. Don Ameche was very much against swearing so the director laced his dialogue with expletives and he was excellent. One of your viewers pointed out that Jamie Lee Curtis had to lobby to get this job. It is also way she wanted to go topless.
This woman should have needed lobbying? She is the daughter of Tony Curtis. Does anyone seriously believe that? The probability that she was already strongly networked from childhood is much greater. She grew into it, literally. Quite apart from the inherited talent for acting...
BTW, seeing Denholm Elliot reminds me to recommend Noises Off, starring Denholm alongside Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, Julie Hagerty from Airplane, John Ritter, Carol Burnett and Mark-Linn Baker, aka Cousin Larry from Perfect Strangers. Absolutely perfect comedy.

His brother, John, had been one of the all-time great comedy geniuses and in the first SNL cast (as were Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray) before he died of an O.D. in 1982. He and Dan Aykroyd started a comedy gag on SNL about being two brothers who sang blues numbers, wearing black suits and Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses (still being made). The routine was so successful, they made a movie of it, The Blues Brothers. (Carrie Fisher plays a mystery woman who is determined to kill John Belushi's character.) Don Ameche didn't like having to say "fuck," but he decided he was professional enough to do it, and he informed Landis he would only do it once. He went around apologizing to the women in the cast for having said that word in their presence. The club's butler, to whom the Dukes gave five dollars for Christmas, was played by Avon Long, a great singer and dancer on the stage in the '40s, '50s, and '60s. I first discovered Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hitcher, which coincidentally was the first film I saw that I considered horror. Now I would just say it's a very dark thriller, but I love it. Rutger Hauer is phenomenal in it. And I can't believe I'd never spotted Crazy Ralph before!

Crazy Ralph is Ralph Bellamy, one of the great supporting actors of the Hollywood era. He often played the hapless other man to Cary Grant in comedies. His brother is another star of the Hollywood era, Don Ameche, who was a minor romantic lead, and the main character of one of my favorite afterlife comedies "Heaven Can Wait" (not the one you're likely thinking of: the older one is another story). You can see Don Ameche in another lead role in "Cocoons".
Actually you're confusing two characters. Bellamy was one of the Duke Brothers. The one he referred to as Crazy Ralph is an actor named Walt Gorney. He was one of the Duke brothers' household servants in the opening scenes, and Crazy Ralph is a character he played in the Friday the 13th movies.

Jamie Lee Curtis was called The Body for a reason.she really was referred to as that as her figure is well as you saw, amazing. At the time she was on the cover of so many magazines. Try a movie called A Fish Called Wanda in which she stars along side John Cleese and so many other famous stars. It's a very funny British film.

I've watched this movie so many times, but I never noticed Gus Fring! That's crazy, you're really good with faces man. When I first watched this with my dad, he paused it right before the big stock market scene and explained what exactly their plan was in laymans terms. I think that really helped, otherwise I would have had no idea what was going on and would probably have been super bored in that scene. But this way I don't mind how long it is :)

Jay, I appreciate you mentioning that you found out that Jennifer Jason Leigh, who you watched in Fast Times, is the daughter of Vic Morrow as that is something I didn't know. I was aware of his tragic death in the John Landis segment of the Twilight Zone movie however. I always learn something new while watching your reactions...like the educational aspect. I also had always missed that the crazy old man from Friday the 13th apparently had a cameo as a Duke brothers' staff member in this film. I'm sure you will point out other people from horror that I haven't recognized during past viewings as I watch the rest of this reaction. I was surprised that Summer School had that many horror alumni in it but you are the horror guru so recognize more of those people while I mostly recognize actors from more mainstream roles, usually from television like that Mark Harmon, the star of Summer School, is Jethro Gibbs on NCIS or that Kirstie Alley was in Star Trek 2, Cheers and the Who's Talking movies. The young blonde surfer was Courtney Thorne-Smith, who is now mostly known for being on Melrose Place, Ally McBeal (never watched that...just saw on Wikipedia), According to Jim, a comedy series she starred in with John Belushi's brother Jim and was Jon Cryer's girlfriend on Two and 1/2 Men. I will finally also point out back to your reference to Jennifer Jason Leigh...she also starred in a a movie with Bridget Fonda called Single White Female that you might find interesting to watch. Last trivia tidbits: Phoebe Cates from Fast Times is married to Kevin Kline and Mark Harmon from Summer School is married to the star of the 70s comedy Mork and Mindy that made Robin Williams a star, Pam Dawber.

Ah. Damnit! There were a few people I thought looked familiar but didn't know 100%. I don't know that I've seen that guy in anything else so that would be a tough one for me to catch unless I just watched Day of the Dead. I should revisit that for fun though. It's been a few years.
Great reaction to another movie i love, i've loved this since i was about 8 in the late 80's. Obviously i already knew Jamie Lee from Halloween (now my favourite movie and franchise, which i first saw when i was 5) and with Eddie Murphy who i already loved from Beverly Hills Cop, another of my top 10 movies i first saw when i was about 7.
It's the last day of September, no problem that it's a Christmas movie. The Christmas season creep has pushed the opening closer to Labour Day, so this may actually be late to the table!

Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy. 4. Jamie Lee Curtis is a 100% frame freeze😍🥰 5. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. 6. "Beverly Hills Cops I and II" are good but I like this and "Coming to America" better for Eddie Murphy🤣🤣
I have never seen this movie but now I need to watch it! I realized the connection to Coming to America and everyone was right, because I never understood that scene until today. Dan Aykroyd definitely has a great number of 80's comedies you should look into, one being with John Candy called The Great Outdoors. Unfortunately, he never really starred by himself in these movies but was with another comedian. Spies Like Us, Caddyshack 2 and Nothing But Trouble with Chevy Chase, The Blues Brothers, 1941 and Neighbors with John Belushi, Tom Hanks in Dragnet. And of course, he was in the intro and outro parts in Twilight Zone the Movie. Keep them coming, Jay. Oh, and if you do watch Spies Like Us, you will see his wife, Donna Dixon. What a catch.
Let me explain a little what happened on the exchange for anyone who is confused by the ending. Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy "sell" commodity shares while the price is high, before they owned any shares. They then had to "buy" the same amount of shares that they sold earlier when the price fell. It is called "short-sell" and it's perfectly legal, although there are rules governing how this happens. It is a risk because if the price of the commodity or stock goes up, you could lose a lot of money. We are seeing a Hollywood version of a "short-sell" event. Fun Fact: Several funny moments in the film came about by accident. Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche) having trouble catching the money clip wasn't supposed to happen that way, but the actors kept going with it and not breaking character, so it was kept in the movie. Ophelia's "Swedish" disguise came about because Jamie Lee Curtis couldn't do the correct Austrian accent. Trading Halted Fact: The World Trade Center's commodity exchange, Comex, was used for the trading scenes, and real traders performed alongside professional extras. As reported in studio production notes, the shoot at Comex was initially planned for a weekday, but the appearance of Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy on the set disrupted business activities, and six billion dollars of trading was halted. The shoot was rescheduled for a weekend. Historical Fact: In 2010, as part of the Wall Street Transparency and Accountability Act, which was to regulate financial markets, a rule was included which barred anyone from using secret inside information to corner markets, similar to what the Duke brothers tried to do in the movie. Since the movie inspired this rule, it has since become known as the Eddie Murphy Rule.

You might want to try "My Cousin Vinny" it's an underrated 90's comedy classic, starring Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei. Marisa Tomei is brilliant in this film, she steals it for me.

The studio didn't want to use Jamie Lee Curtis. She was their 'scream queen'.....& had never done any comedic roles before. But the director insisted. By the way......another good Dan Akroyd movie was 'Neighbors'......NOT the remake....which also starred John Belushi.

If you're a Jennifer Jason Lee fan, you MUST see the Coen Bros "Hudsucker Proxy" - it's kind of a sendup on old 1940s Preston Sturges/Frank Capra films, but JJL channels EVERY intense 1940s "tough dame" character from ALL those movies.

Why is Frank Oz only ever mentioned for his dubbing. It seems much more important to me that he is an outstanding director.

Another really good Murphy film is "48 Hours". Personally, I like that one more than the mentioned "Beverly Hills Cop".
48 Hours was THE movie that made him a star. You knew SNL couldn't hold onto him after that, then Trading Places and Delirious. He was the hottest dude on the planet next to Michael Jackson.
I'll be checking that out at some point. Looking forward to it but I should probably do the other Beverly Hills Cops before I start another series. 😂
Jay, I saw this movie in the theaters several times when it first came out. I then bought it on VHS. I lost to tape, but I have FOND memories!!! Great job. I surely thought you would laugh at more situations in scenes, but you did catch BOTH 4th wall breaks by Eddie!!!! 😝
Crazy Ralph is Ralph Bellamy, one of the great supporting actors of the Hollywood era. He often played the hapless other man to Cary Grant in comedies. His brother is another star of the Hollywood era, Don Ameche, who was a minor romantic lead, and the main character of one of my favorite afterlife comedies "Heaven Can Wait" (not the one you're likely thinking of: the older one is another story). You can see Don Ameche in another lead role in "Cocoons".
Actually you're confusing two characters. Bellamy was one of the Duke Brothers. The one he referred to as Crazy Ralph is an actor named Walt Gorney. He was one of the Duke brothers' household servants in the opening scenes, and Crazy Ralph is a character he played in the Friday the 13th movies.

80's and 90's movies is where it's it for me... Perhaps because i grew up with them... 🤔😂 The movie that put Jamie Le Curtis on the map for me was True Lies. Imo one of the best comedy/action movies ever made.

When I first watched this with my dad, he paused it right before the big stock market scene and explained what exactly their plan was in laymans terms. I think that really helped, otherwise I would have had no idea what was going on and would probably have been super bored in that scene. But this way I don't mind how long it is :)

Jay, I appreciate you mentioning that you found out that Jennifer Jason Leigh, who you watched in Fast Times, is the daughter of Vic Morrow as that is something I didn't know. I was aware of his tragic death in the John Landis segment of the Twilight Zone movie however. I always learn something new while watching your reactions...like the educational aspect. I also had always missed that the crazy old man from Friday the 13th apparently had a cameo as a Duke brothers' staff member in this film. I'm sure you will point out other people from horror that I haven't recognized during past viewings as I watch the rest of this reaction. I was surprised that Summer School had that many horror alumni in it but you are the horror guru so recognize more of those people while I mostly recognize actors from more mainstream roles, usually from television like that Mark Harmon, the star of Summer School, is Jethro Gibbs on NCIS or that Kirstie Alley was in Star Trek 2, Cheers and the Who's Talking movies. The young blonde surfer was Courtney Thorne-Smith, who is now mostly known for being on Melrose Place, Ally McBeal (never watched that...just saw on Wikipedia), According to Jim, a comedy series she starred in with John Belushi's brother Jim and was Jon Cryer's girlfriend on Two and 1/2 Men. I will finally also point out back to your reference to Jennifer Jason Leigh...she also starred in a a movie with Bridget Fonda called Single White Female that you might find interesting to watch. Last trivia tidbits: Phoebe Cates from Fast Times is married to Kevin Kline and Mark Harmon from Summer School is married to the star of the 70s comedy Mork and Mindy that made Robin Williams a star, Pam Dawber.
Surprised you missed the cameo from Gary Howard Klar aka stele from day of the dead. He's the dock worker at the very end who say "who cares they're in love." Took me many years before I caught that one
Ah. Damnit! There were a few people I thought looked familiar but didn't know 100%. I don't know that I've seen that guy in anything else so that would be a tough one for me to catch unless I just watched Day of the Dead. I should revisit that for fun though. It's been a few years.

Great reaction to another movie i love, i've loved this since i was about 8 in the late 80's. Obviously i already knew Jamie Lee from Halloween (now my favourite movie and franchise, which i first saw when i was 5) and with Eddie Murphy who i already loved from Beverly Hills Cop, another of my top 10 movies i first saw when i was about 7.
💯 understandable that you missed this - one of the fork lift drivers was SNL alum and now-former-senator Al Franken.
It's the last day of September, no problem that it's a Christmas movie. The Christmas season creep has pushed the opening closer to Labour Day, so this may actually be late to the table!

5. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one.
6. "Beverly Hills Cops I and II" are good but I like this and "Coming to America" better for Eddie Murphy🤣🤣
I have never seen this movie but now I need to watch it! I realized the connection to Coming to America and everyone was right, because I never understood that scene until today. Dan Aykroyd definitely has a great number of 80's comedies you should look into, one being with John Candy called The Great Outdoors. Unfortunately, he never really starred by himself in these movies but was with another comedian. Spies Like Us, Caddyshack 2 and Nothing But Trouble with Chevy Chase, The Blues Brothers, 1941 and Neighbors with John Belushi, Tom Hanks in Dragnet. And of course, he was in the intro and outro parts in Twilight Zone the Movie. Keep them coming, Jay. Oh, and if you do watch Spies Like Us, you will see his wife, Donna Dixon. What a catch.

Let me explain a little what happened on the exchange for anyone who is confused by the ending. Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy "sell" commodity shares while the price is high, before they owned any shares. They then had to "buy" the same amount of shares that they sold earlier when the price fell. It is called "short-sell" and it's perfectly legal, although there are rules governing how this happens. It is a risk because if the price of the commodity or stock goes up, you could lose a lot of money. We are seeing a Hollywood version of a "short-sell" event.
Fun Fact: Several funny moments in the film came about by accident. Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche) having trouble catching the money clip wasn't supposed to happen that way, but the actors kept going with it and not breaking character, so it was kept in the movie. Ophelia's "Swedish" disguise came about because Jamie Lee Curtis couldn't do the correct Austrian accent.
Trading Halted Fact: The World Trade Center's commodity exchange, Comex, was used for the trading scenes, and real traders performed alongside professional extras. As reported in studio production notes, the shoot at Comex was initially planned for a weekday, but the appearance of Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy on the set disrupted business activities, and six billion dollars of trading was halted. The shoot was rescheduled for a weekend.
Historical Fact: In 2010, as part of the Wall Street Transparency and Accountability Act, which was to regulate financial markets, a rule was included which barred anyone from using secret inside information to corner markets, similar to what the Duke brothers tried to do in the movie. Since the movie inspired this rule, it has since become known as the Eddie Murphy Rule.

Her mother, Christine Kauffmann, was the daughter of a German air force officer and a French make-up artist. She could have learned the southern German dialect from her mother. Her mother was actually born in Austria and grew up in Munich...
