Paradise Towers is certainly underrated. Sure, it has a lot of problems - and a lot of people will be put off by Richard Briers going full cheese mode after being posessed - but it's still a fun story (with a nice bundle of dark undertones, nice world building, and pretty cool characters too).

Both the story (and that cliffhanger) are still my favourites to this day. A whole 100 minutes of Lovecraftian Doctor Who horror, and if you've followed 7+Ace's journey, it's a great end to her arc. The soundtrack is delicious, the monsters are great, the kill-count is high, and Fenric is overdue a TV return - despite already reappearing in Big Finish.

Very few cliffhangers can compare to the "OH SH*T" stairs moment in Remembrance (4:18) - or the spine-chilling creepiness of Curse of Fenric. "We play the contest again... *_Time Lord!"_* (19:01). They are GOATED cliffhangers, but there have been other great moments too, particularly in Greatest Show - which is strong across the board. I also love Morgaine's evil laugh when the Destroyer is summoned (13:40). So delightfully cheesy and creepy. Also, justice for the Kandy Man (8:10).

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink Год назад +19

Twas the producers fault. It was initially meant to show the Doctor's passage being blocked by an impassable ice-wall, thus trying to climb to another platform (and then slip + hang from his brolly), but because they decided it wasn't possible to convey, they just had him dangle over the edge, and they didn't even add the ice-wall blocking his path either. It's stupid, lazy, and nonsensical in broadcast form, but I still find it endearing.

This brings back memories. This was the era I became a full fledged Doctor Who fan.
Always strikes me, that the show, in it's last few years, became more down to Earth and mature?
The last story broadcast, "Survival", was, in a lovely irony,
a prediction of how the show would be when it came back nearly 20 years later in 2005.
The last 3 years were the end, but also sowed, the seeds of A NEW beginning to come. The companions, settings and the way the show was written, had a major impact on the New Series which is now EIGHTEEN YEARS old this year.
I'm sure RTD and Moffatt both watched these seasons and were influenced.
I am SO PROUD, to say I saw these stories and was, as a young kid, mesmerised by the cliff hangers and the overall renewed quality. The BBC's excuses of the show being tired et el are utter twaddle.
In an odd way, the last 3 years were ALSO, a return to THE FIRST 3 years: Working against the odds. Making the best of a limited budget. A Doctor who (pun intended) is a mystery.
"Remembrance of the Daleks" is the story which should've been the 25th anniversary story because it is a masterclass in taking the show (and the Doctor and Ace) forward.
What I LOVE about the McCoy era, as shown in "Remembrance", is that it cleverly tips the hat to the show's past to create new characters/monsters who are familiar and new?
Such as the characters Group Captain Gilmore, Professor Rachel Jensen, Allison and Sgt. Mike Smith. All clearly meant to remind us of the original companions and the dear old Brig.
And, finally it is brave enough to comment on the 60s from a 80s perspective?
This was Doctor Who utilizing it's past and being completely up to date in a way it told it's stories and explored the themes.
    ACE!
    David

The Happiness Patrol and Curse of Fenric soundtracks are absolutely delicious. The rest are either very, VERY 80's, or a bit divisive, like Remembrance of the Daleks with its constant drum machine shenanigans, even though that has great sounding moments as well.

5:51 The rising synth accompanied by the chorus of Daleks is just about perfect. The tension builds up right to the end and the final bass chord is mixed seamlessly into the sting. Total chaos.
7:53 Synth gently comes in with the organ music, beautiful.
12:12 This was fantastic but not to the 7th doctor’s taste.
