Very useful video and tips! Great points about always spending resources...I find my barracks idle too often. Also, really good points on scouting your opponent and denying their hunt/gold. Will try to implement this in my future games -1070 elo player
Very nice video Flame. I want to share some knowledge on macro since a lot of players strugle with macro, and i think its the most important part of any RTS and the best and the simplest way to improve. Most people actually don't know what is macro. In simple terms, macro is resource management. It consits of input (how many vills do you have on each resource) and output (how you spend them in terms of army and tech). Then you have UI that is used as indicator if you are macroing properly. Most people think macro is when Boit checks total resources collected graph in post game. But that is false. Think about it like this. Lets say both players have the same army and micro. One player has 10k res in the bank and the other doesn't. If player one doesn't spend resources on tech, he will come even at the fight and he wouldn't be able to meet the win condition. But if he spends them all on tech, he will win simply by stronger army. So we can conclude that perfect macro is when you have 0 resources and a lot of villagers to gather them. That is because win condition is to defeat the opponent, and not who is first to get to 10k res. Now most people don't struggle with input part, because build orders cover that. They struggle with output part because it requires APM, game knowledge and identification of macro mistakes in highly intense game. I will lay out 3 common macro mistakes that i have identified in this game and John Arbiters games that Flame coached him on stream and how to fix them (I highly suggest to watch the vod of JAs stream). 1.) Not spending resources Looks like this: 500F 500W 500G. It indicates that you are not spending your resources. Simple fix is to get army or tech. 2.) Over Gathering Looks like this: 50F 900W 50G It indicates that you have way to many vills on one resource. Short term fix is to sell/buy resources to balance your eco so you can spend them. Long term solution is to take off some vills off of that res and put them on 2 other. 3.) Clogged unit queue Looks like this: on global queue there is a number next to unit that you are training. This one is the most common and the most dangerous one. The reason is because on the first glance you are spending your resources. But the reality is that you are not getting units out in time and your eco advantage is not present, because result is an equal army numbers instead of favorable. Simple fix is to cancel units until you don't have a number on a unit queue and get tech upgrade with excess resources. After that you can get tech upgrades with excess resources, which is a short term solution, or you can place down more military production facilities, which is a long term solution. Hope it was helpful for a lot of players.
Agree with floating resources. It’s still a problem for me and I often forget adding more military buildings. Honestly one of the most common problem for beginners is multi-tasking. I feel that’s one skill often neglected in most “beginner” guides I’ve seen, but is one of the most critical skills for playing RTS. Other skills will build upon the player’s ability to do more than 2 things at the same time, but AoM has auto train vills so it removes that burden but for all other things is still important.
“Ah yes, I have my big first wave of military to send to enemy base all the way across the map, just have them get moving while I look for any upgrades… That’s should do it- oh shit if forgot about my army.”
just imagine aom without auto build villager and u have to do crap tons of other stuff , imo auto train villagers for Age series is a must , as u have way more multitasking than any other rts games .
@ yeah I originally tried without auto queue vills, but realized I’m just unnecessarily making myself at a disadvantage lol. But I still turn it off at start since I enjoy playing norse. After finishing the build order, then I’ll auto queue vills or dwarves depending on the need.
Love this vid. just a bit of feedback: your commentary is very 'Stream of consciousness' you ramble out many different distinct points. maybe this would be more informative if, at key moment in the game. you pauze explain a fundamental point. and then show the situation how does fundementals apply. love the video. Keep it up!

These are awesome. I haven’t been able to crack past 1250 Elo, same as on AOE2 lol. This is the greatest barrier

Would love you to coach me!
Dm me on discord, we can set a session up
I think my biggest struggle rn is simply running into the population cap from making too many villagers 🤣
