I've been watching Andy Griffith for 50 plus years. Still haven't grown tired of it. The world could use a heavy dose of Any Griffith and Mayberry right about now.
My grandma watched this show even when she was deep into Alzheimers. She was watching this episode and I heard this song a few days before she passed. It will always remind me of her.
my Dad's favorite show,,, and when I was 5 ,, he made me watch 2 episodes,,,this one. And the one where Opie kills the momma bird,,,,it took years until "I got it" Missing you tonight Dad,,,,
Jack Prince, whose birth name was John Upchurch, was trained in singing at an early age. Prince appeared on Broadway in the 1950s in main and understudy/replacement roles in at least three musicals: "Guys and Dolls" (1950-1953), as "Nicely Nicely Johnson", "Lil' Abner" (1956-1958) as "Marryin' Sam", and "Destry Rides Again" (1959-1960) as Tom Destry's sidekick "Wash". It was in "Destry", in which Prince sang two songs, that he made the acquaintance of Andy Griffith, who had the title role (and who earned a Tony nomination for his performance). When "The Andy Griffith Show" started on TV in the early 1960's, Griffith asked Prince to appear in a few episodes. Prince, who first appeared in two minor roles on the show, was best-known, and is best-remembered today, for his role of Rafe Hollister". Griffith wanted Prince to have a larger role in the series, but Prince declined, feeling that it would take him away from what was then a successful singing career. Prince continued to perform in the theater and work the nightclub circuit. Not much can be found about him during the 1970s and 1980s. His last known appearance was on TNN's "Nashville Now!" in September of 1991, which was a reunion of many of "The Andy Griffith Show" cast members. Prince received a standing ovation for the two songs he sang. Prince is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, California. www.imdb.com/name/nm0697666/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm
In our home '50's, '60's, and '70's TV shows are on permanent rotation. I don't buy a lot of DVD's but these old shows are worth it against the day somebody gets woke and pulls all the programming.
Before he sang in the episode 'Rafe Hollister sings'. Jack prince was in the andy Griffith Show in quite a few appearances. You wouldn't think he was a trained, and talented singer but he was. May he Rest in peace.
i just love that episode with jack prince he seems so real and innocent i am 55 but i am watching this episode as we speak, i thankyou lord for jack princexxoo
I've ALWAYS loved this song! He really had a natural feel for it! Here in Indiana, there are alot of "Lonesome Roads" & I think of him every time I see one.😊
In our rural area we have an annual community day. One of the farmers would sit at a piano in his coveralls and play the most beautiful music. His day job was music professor and had toured with a famous successful crooner back in the day. It would always astonish people who weren’t familiar with him
Roy, I think you'll do very well in preserving this history. I speak as one who lives in Clinton, Tennessee, and enjoys many types of music, but I hold this kind of music in a special place in my heart.
Definitely, Jack Prince, 1/19/1920 - 1/8/1994, appeared in six episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. He first met Andy Griffith when they preformed together in the Broadway musical, "Destry Rides Again." Sure did love to hear him sing.
His is the only version that captures the essence of the song! I knew how much I loved this song the first time I heard it when I was a child in the 60s. RIP, sir! We still think of you. You left your mark!
@AMSOMmp I found this... Actor. Born Jack Trevathian Upchurch, he was trained in singing at an early age and appeared on many Broadway musicals in the early 1950s. In 1954, he broke into the television scene singing on "The Colgate Comedy Hour" and later on the Johnny Carson Show". His other TV credits include "The Buick-Berle Show", "The Danny Thomas Show", "Nashville Now!" and was most remembered for his role as Rafe Hollister on "The Andy Griffith Show".
Makes me proud to be a gen X. 1967. This show had so much value. It’s crazy. Now a days people don’t value good up bringing and are offended by everything. This show actually showed love, respect, understanding of others, had a Godly value. I really think this is the greatest show ever.
I'm 63...I still remember this episode....B&W tv.....we thought it was as good as it could get! What a beautiful voice....stilled now by the march of time.
beautiful voice, makes u think of when u were young and care free and drag racing , parting ,and when u get older and look back on your life, knowing it soon to be over, and making peace with others and God
Does anyone know if Andy and Jack Prince made a single of this song "Look up that lonesome road"? Andy did a beautiful job playing. I always think of my daddy when I watch Andy because we were raised on the same morals and principals as Andy showed on the show. My dad also loved the darlins bluegrass. Me to. My mom has went home from her faithful years living for God and my dad and my sisters and daughter are still singing in church and this is the kind of music we sing.
Thanks for sharing. This song and clip popped in my head just now. What a beautiful song and singer! Growing up watching Andy I love this so much. Classic! ✌️💜
His voice is sooo amazing...I even tried to see if he had made recordings...but he hadn’t! And Andy Griffith on the guitar...absolutely amazing how they worked together!!!! 😍❤️
The man's name is Jack Prince. You can read more about him at the imbd website. He had a career as a singer and stage actor. he met Andy Griffith when they worked together on stage. Every night me and my PA watch the Andy Griffith show, Gomes Pyle, Green acres, and Hogans Heroes on MeTV we made a lot of good memories we still do, lol!!!
I can't help but to connect Lonesome Road to Griffith's character, Lonesome Rhoads, in the 1957 film, A Face in the Crowd. Great movie. He was on track to become an A list movie star before going into TV.
I had a middle school teacher who taught a class using this show. He called it “Life Lessons with Barney Fife”. It was a good class. A lot of great lessons were shared there.
I'm 17 years old. Not American. The Andy Griffith Show is my fave TV SHOW. 😍

Andy Griffith did a movie in the 50s, "𝘈 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘥", playing the character Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes.
