I love how Twilight treats Spike as her actual son and it was hurtful when Spike told her she wasnt his real parent. I also like how supportive Twilight was to Spike finding his father even though that must've hurt her.
You can tell that Starlight has come a VEEEEERRRRYYY long way in learning to control her anger, when a random, free-loading dragon can barge in on her while she's in the bathtub and toss her out to her death like garbage during a musical number while Spike lets him do it, but she does nothing violent in response to either of them.
Phantom slay 5612 Spike really thought Sludge was his biological father, so when Twilight started to doubt him a little, Spike naturally defended him. It’s the same thing when a (human) child is adopted as an infant and when they are a teenager, find their biological parents and their adopted parents don’t want them to leave to go live with their real parents. But I still agree that Sludge was a Jerk for doing that to Spike though
On second thought, maybe Sludge should've stayed around. Starlight still has a temper, and he would've made a great punching bag for her to use daily to get out any aggression she might still have in her!

I admit, Sludge kinda fooled me about the whole father to Spike thing. I’m glad that Spike has Smolder to look up to for dragon knowledge, aside from Ember of course. It’s nice to see that the bond between Spike and Twilight grow stronger with each of these family type episodes they share.
I would like to think that the trick that Sludge tried to pull by pretending to be the father of a dragon child, and taking advantage of them is a massive taboo in dragon culture and would have most likely gotten him eaten by Dragon Lord Torch. Heck I don’t even think Garble would sink so low.
thebeav PercabethFTW Oh no; we Starburst sailors are still here. Most of us have just been grounded as of "Road to Friendship." To me at least, Star and Trix's relationship is more the best friend scenario, and Star and Twi's is something akin to semi-adoptive sisters. But I'd also like to agree with Cam Miller, that picture was adorable. Regardless, Starburst is still OTP.
22:54 SMULDUR: "No, it isn't." Uh, yeah you do, actually, Smolder. Your entire society is based on the examples of a shitbag dragon who took advantage of the kindness of a Dragon Lord and overthrew him.
12:31 now, while WE know Sludge's story is bull, the characters don't... so that Last question from Dash is actually pretty heartless. "Hey, even though you'd been imprisoned, explain how the baby you had to give up to save its life ended up somewhere else after you were imprisoned, even though your being imprisoned means you never could've seen what happened to your baby". When you think about it, that's kinda callous of Dash, even for her
Sludge actually DID act like normal dragons. He took advantage of weaker creatures, he was possessive, and those are qualities that have been shown to be dominant traits in dragons.
My half headcanon/hope, half theory is that Sludge was indeed a prisoner in the lands he was talking about, and met Spike's parents there, who he heard the story from. But after putting two and two together and connecting Spike to them, he just inserted himself as Spike's father in the story. The theory is probably not true whatsoever, but kind of an interesting thought and would make for a great story if Spike's parents all this time were trapped in some awful land like that and were eventually rescued by their son. It would complete Spike's arc in such a satisfying way.
My updated guide on "How to be a (lazy) Dragon" according to Sludge, Equestria's worst fake dad of the year Step 1: find a very friendly, kind-hearted Alicorn Princess that's prone to being pushed around, and has a castle. Step 2: move into her castle Step 3: go around the castle while singing, and if you see a Unicorn mare taking a bath, throw her out the castle's window, and PRAY that she doesn't get pissed to come back to kick your ass. Step 4: lay down Step 5: eat Step 6: sleep Step 7: wake up Step 8: repeat steps 5-7
"Father Knows Beast," i think is a play off of "Mother knows best" The song from rapunzel and the episode is Kinda like what rapunzel's fake mom does . let me know what you think
I am noticing a pattern in names for other creatures. Dragons have names commonly to do with their personality and is dragon like. Griffons have names that begin with G (because griffons are too proud, I guess.) Hippogriffs have names from the "Warriors" series, and if not, combine words that describe their character, or pick a random name that relate to the ocean or the sky. And changelings have names that relate to bugs in some way. All creatures other than ponies seem to use one word names.
Now I'm imagining baby Hippogriffs having "chick" as the suffix to their names and adolescents having "claw" in the same vein as the "kit" and "paw" names of babies and apprentices from Warriors. XD
When I read the synopsis on this episode I don't think this dragon was going to be Spikes Father, that feels too GOTG2, "he was your father but not your daddy". This is an American Children's show, and making him spikes real father and forcing him to choose between his dragon and pony family is something too adult an an American Children's show. We are probably gong to find out how Celestia got his egg, but not what happen to his family, we still don't know what happen to the apple parents and this is probably the same thing.
17:25 who doesn't lock their restroom door when they live in a castle with other organisms of the same species? And like Silver Stream I don't know much about plumbing but I dont think that's how bath tubs work
1:00-1:12 Actually, we saw in Hearth Warming Club that Ocellus does have a family with a father, mother and younger siblings. 19:14 I wonder, too. 20:14-20:20 Your reaction to Twilight's heart breaking (literally). 32:39 Oh, a new closing. It looks good.
Beyond the lands, there be Berk... and dragon hunters. ;) Also, this would be the first time they used the word "orphan". Did a subtitle/transcript search, and it wasn't used in Dragon Quest, nor was it used with Gallus.
I can't wait for you to react to the finale, is going to be amazing, and i don't have any other word i would rather use. i hope the strike goes away really fast, you are awesome.
I'm really surprised but happy that they did an episode like this. Yeah the whole the parent isn't really their parent is a big fat cliche, but it worked. I love Spike's character and love how he's been developing, he really needed something like this for his character. Seeing Twilight's actual heart breaking was just, it was a punch to the gut. Even though I'm not adopted I can totally understand where Spike is coming from though; I mean he was defending the guy because he thought he was his dad, someone that he never thought he'd get to meet. I see this as an episode that it doesn't matter who or where Spike's parents are, but that Twilight is his true family and that's all that matters. Would I love to see an episode about Spike's biological parents? Heck yeah. But to me it isn't as important as this message was. I love that MLP still continues to do mature lessons like this; I thought something like this would be a little too mature for little kids to handle, but I think it's good that we have this for the ones who maybe are going through something similar or would like to know their true biological parents, this lesson is there for them.
It looks like it was, but with more of a empathize on Twilight being like a mother to Spike, and not just "family". Especially since it only focused on their relationship, while Dragon Quest was about about his relationship with all his friends being family, not just Twilight.
I can see why this isn't a favorite for most people. Yes, Sludge was a big jerk, and yes, we were teased with Spike's backstory and still have the ponies as his family trope. However, despite that, I did like the episode because the overall plot was good. Oddly enough, I saw some similarities between this and GotG Vol. 2.
I like the episode and the idea behind it, while cliché to be honest, but did anyone else feel that the weight of the situation was kind of glossed over? Spike was excited to think he found his dad but when he discovers the truth it doesn't seem to hit very hard, just kind of like Oh, he's not my dad, oh well". The end with Twilight was sweet of course, but a story like this could have been a lot stronger as a 2 part finale or a 2 part season opener, just to really demonstrate the depth of Spike's feelings about his biological family and his relationship with Twilight for some heavy Spike and Twilight character development.

I'm only half-happy about that. I'm happy she didn't do anything to Spike. But how she didn't do anything to Sludge on the other end...
Agreed. Starlight should have blasted that guy to Saddle Arabia and beyond. Oh well. There's always next time...
Fan art writers to your keyboards
"Yeah. This guy sucks."
Couldn't have said it better myself.
yea he does
My feelings: This episode was pretty good. Still, I'm adding Sludge to my kill list on this show. No one, I mean no one, makes TWILIGHT CRY!
Phantom slay 5612 He didn’t make Twilight cry, technically Spike did
Well, who caused Spike to get the mentality to say what he said?
Phantom slay 5612 Spike really thought Sludge was his biological father, so when Twilight started to doubt him a little, Spike naturally defended him. +Laura
Of course, Sludge *pretended* to be Spike's father to enjoy Twilight's pillows. Sludgebag.
Well, regardless, to me, every time Twilight cries, an angel loses its wings
1:40 To be clear, Gallus only stated that he didn't have a family, not that griffins in general don't.
"No, that doesn't get thrown out!" I'm with ya, RarityDash! No one throws Starlight out the window!
One more reason why Sludge had to GO!
thats Starlight abuse
On second thought, maybe Sludge should've stayed around.
Starlight still has a temper, and he would've made a great punching bag for her to use daily to get out any aggression she might still have in her!
He would make a good magical training dummy for Trixie too...
I'm with ya there
"you're making him work?"
AJ had first pick for rehab, Pinkie's methods proved more effective
Sludge....
You're NOT THE FATHER
OH HELL NO!
HELL YES!
Now we can blast him to the moon without the guilt of knowing we sent away a "dad" of Spike's.
_((Twilight starts dancing))_
Sludge throws a bathing Starlight out the window, pretty much attempting to kill her.

That was one of the funniest parts of the episode! 😹
The breaking heart scene really struck me. Pegasus wing anatomy is completely different from what I expected.

The only thing I hate about this episode, is that I feel like we now have even less of a chance of ever knowing about Spike's actual parents.
To be fair, it seems like dragons are too caring about family. I doubt Embet and Smoulder are related but they act like they do.
