My favorite meme about the space wolves is that their names in Fenrisian probably mean "Thor the daemon killer", "Gnoll the backbreaker", or "Logan the oathkeeper", but in High Gothic, it's just some variant of Wolfy McWolfson or Moony McMoonface

Pretty much how wolf packs in the wild work.
Russ won the contests on a technicality by making it a contest of speed, rather than endurance. Simply put, he finished all the booze/food before Emps could finish his first round.
And by all food and booze we mean ALL, as in there had nothing left in the house

@@soffren no such thing as “try” here, the Neuroglottis would let him break down its chemistry so he could unironically tell you things like where it was grown or in what type of vessel it was aged.
How they did it: Logan Grimnar, Wolf Santa, full force ran in Terminator Armor, the stuff meant to be a bullet sponge (so defense, not speed), cut down both the Inquistor and the Grey Knight, wiped down his ax, and then basically asked "will there be a problem?" in a tone that said "I still have enough energy to kick all your assess"
Not to mention his axe is a Khorne relic weapon
That was their worst mary sue moment in the franchise. That scene only would make sense if Logan were a primarch or a custodian.
Just replace "logar grimmar" with "cato sicarius" and try to imagine how the fandom would have reacted.
Yeah but it’s their chapter master and it still no where near as bad as some of the ultra marines stuff or a character like the blood angle’s edgy grim reaper.

So the whole "wake up in a tundra and make it back to The Fang through all this shit" is basically when you start a new run in Skyrim and going straight for the Battleaxe of Fiery Souls as soon as you can.
You basically wake up buck naked in the sea of ghosts on hardcore mode and have to make it to whiterun while trying not to become a werewolf
What I'm hearing is that the Emperor took a page out of Odin's book and disguised himself as a wandering old man before revealing himself, declaring his names and titles, and then proceeds to participate in classic challenges from Norse mythology. When they say "there is only war" they aren't kidding, because the subtlety got replaced with war as well.
The Emperor probably was the inspiration for Odin in the 40k universe
It goes even deeper, because their name for Big E is "Allfather", which is Odins title.
And their afterlife is Karhalla or sth
@@alexandergogolev702the other is that in the tale of ragnarok where the world is destroyed ending the time of the gods before it can start anew Odin the sorceror who sacrificed his own eye for more power is killed by Fenrir. Which is quite similar to Leman Russ fighting Magnus the one eyed sorceror with the Horus Heresy being the ragnarok stand in.

Space Wolves utilize power weapons called Frost weapons which are usually made from energized diamonds or Kraken teeth from Fenris.
Fun fact: the wolves on Fenris are not the size of horses. They are the size of TANKS.
Even more fun fact, those aren't wolves at all. They're some kind of warp entity/warp tainted thing. Magnus divined their evolution path in one of the books and laughed when he realized they weren't "natural"

As a Space Wolves player myself, that fact makes too much sense for the other SW fans to go apeshit about it.
There are two wolves inside us all... in our... inner Space you could say. One stands for the pack, is noble and inspiring. The other surfs in on the corpse of a thousand son with a 6 pack and a boom box blasting Immigrant song.

If I remember correctly, part of the things they did to end The Months of Shame, was they woke up Bjorn the Fell Handed (one of the oldest loyalist space marines, was the personal aid to Leman Russ, and the first Great Wolf after Russ disappeared), who basically told the Inquisition, the Grey Knights and the Wolves "Everyone sit down.....NOW". After telling the survivors of the Inquisitor's group to stop groveling, he told the Inquisition to not come back, then demanded that the Grey Knights (the most secretive and classified space marines) explain exactly who they were and why the Wolves shouldn't kill them now...and everyone listened to him.
The funniest part of Björn waking up to meet the inquisition is he recognizes that a female inquisitor in the retinue is from fenris and when he calls her pretty the grey knight captain wonders if the process to make marines was different back then to be able recognize her attractiveness
In the book "prospero burns" the wolves explain that they basically just always take things to the extreme. If they're there to invade, they obliterate. If they're there to protect, they move mountains. It's less about dichotomy and more about doing whatever they were assigned to to an excessive degree at all times

You got through this entire video and never mentioned the wolf pelts they wear -are their own skins- from when they were changing on the walk to the Fang because of the Canis Helix. Its the most Viking-metal-madness thing!
Slight correction. 44:30 Russ did not go out of his way to murder the Thousand Sons at the start. He tried a hail Magnus for his surrender. Even useing one of his legions "spies" to attempt a pshychic message. He did not want to see another brother wiped off the ledger, even one he hated like Magnus. But, when he choose to unleash his sons, there was a no prisoner mentality among his men.
Tbf to both Magnus and Russ at that moment Horus was both A. Fallen to Chaos and B. Intercepted those hails by infiltrating his agents amongst the wolves mortal auxiliary. They were both screwed by Horus's fall in that moment at least.
@@Red13aron Ohh, I was just pointing out Russ did TRY other options. Its just that between Horus' scheming, and Magnus idiocy, he was left with few options.
@VA_Nightshade Additionally, the initial standoff only arose due to Ahriman's outright disobedience of Magnus' orders.
Magnus ordered his Legion to laydown arms and surrender their Primarch (Magnus himself) peacefully, accept any casualties taken in the intial planet fall of the Wolves and not fight back (especially with Psykers) under any circumstances.
Ahriman refused those orders and commanded the Thousand Sons to defend Magnus with everything they had if the Wolves made planet fall.
They (The Thousand Sons) fired opon and killed the loyal messengers sent by the Wolves traitorous human Auxiliaries as the traitorous Astropath's psychic message reached Ahriman misinforming him that the landing craft had a Kill Team aboard sent to Execute Magnus and the Chief Librarian himself.
Russ was told they literally rejected psychic messages and destroyed the messengers landing craft as a show of defiance.
From there Russ unleashed that fury of orbital bombardment as a message for the Thousand Sons to stand down. Which, did not deter Ahriman or the Legion.
It only made them want to fight to defend Magnus even more.
It was pretty much a slaugther from that point on, Russ and the Wolves decended and fought ruthlessly. Many Thousand Sons did die due to hesitation, in firing on the refugees or even at any Space Wolf.
The Wolves never hesitated after that however, they were essentially swayed by the "proof" of the Thousand Sons Herasy and betrayal by that point.
When the Thousan sons started throwing out offensive psychic attacks, that only reinforced their "Proof".
It was ultimately Ahriman's call to defend and use psykers that doomed most of the Thousand Sons that died to their fate that day.
Ahriman was always power hungry bastard that coveted the power that came from all sorts of forbidden knowledge.
He was an easy mark for chaos, Tzeench more specifically.
this is one of those things that has been rewritten a few times. in the old 30k codexes they talk about the fall in a much more murder gung ho manner. when the novel came out for the horus heresy series, that changed a lot, making russ much more willing to come and take him without burning everything to the ground. that same book also alludes very heavily that russ and the wolves are responsible for at least 1 of the 2 missing legions being wiped out, giving a bit more credence to his title as the emperor's executioner.
I hope that comment gets pinned because it's the type of lore that gets meme'd and never corrected so it just spreads without actually being the lore now.
If there's one thing I dislike about the wolves, it's how GW made them lean so much into the wolf aspect. Give me back my barbarians.

The scene in Wolfsbane where Loken is told not to call the legion "the space wolves", and that members of The Rout view the "wolf wolf wolf" stuff to be something that ignorant off world'ers do, being an easy example off the top of my head

For me is the plot armor and the hypocrisy of the rune priests.
Not only do they have psycker those specific psyckers (and the space wolves in general) are resistant to corruption.
Why? Because fenris has a presence in the warp.

So, either there has been some new information on the topic or Isyander simplified the arrival on Prospero a lot. Yes, Horus did contact Leman along the way and told him to kill Magnus and the Sons, but here’s the special thing now: despite Leman being „the executioner“ and hating Magnus, he did not want to Kill his brother.
Before Leman & the Wolves landed on Prospero, Leman wanted to communicate with Magnus one last time because despite his reputation, when it came to critical situations, Leman always had a sound mind of judgement and was extremely reliable. He wanted to talk to Magnus and despite Horus‘ orders, wanted to end the whole conflict peacefully and take Magnus with him to Terra to see the Emperor. But since Magnus refused to answer his calls and rejected any advances for communication, Leman was forced to raise his hand and only then decided to attack Prospero. He didn’t go in foaming out his mouth just waiting to murder his brother and his Legion

I am surprised that they completely left out any mention of the Dark Angels. Yes, the Space Wolves and Thousand Sons have a deep hatred for one another, but it’s the Dark Angels that are their biggest rivals.
For instance, after the Lion knocked out Leman with that sucker punch, the two Legions started arguing and bickering on who was the rightful winner of the fight (Wolves say Lion cheated while the Angels said Leman lost after opening his guard up by laughing) and so decided that on a yearly basis, the Angels and Wolves meet up and their choses champions fight each other and the winner of the fight and their Legion get to be „the correct answer“ on the debate on who fairly won the fight and in general show who is the better legion with that W.
I think in the beginning, when they first came up with the idea, the champion of the wolves approached the Lion and demanded to face his champion, only for Lion to say: „it’s me“ and then punched the guy across the room, knocking him out.
I thought Lion disappeared before Russ
@@user-pm3wk6lw6m that i‘m not sure about it, but the fight between Lion and Russ happened long ago, even before the Heresy and the Legions started that competition while both were still around
You forgot the end of the Lion and the Wolf’s brawl - At the end of the Heresy the Lion tried to gut Leman for preventing both of them getting to Terra on time.
Russ responds by taking the sword in the gut, hauling himself up on the blade and hugging the Lion and saying something along the lines of ‘Let this be the end of the bad blood between us’.

I think there are a lot of fan theories out that the Wolves lack of restraint when it came to wiping out the Thousand Sons can be tied to the now missing 2nd and 11th Legions.

I am right there with you, my friend. I had some knowledge from weshammer, but he got into storytime so much I had to find more consistent lore videos and found these guys. Think it was around this past December. I am now mostly caught up on patreon and current on RUclips. I have been a patron for less than 2 weeks. I may have a problem.

Just so you know, the story of the emperor meeting LR is straight ripped out of norse mythos where some giants in disguise challenged Thor, Loki and a regular guy who could run really fast for some reason to a drinking contest, a feast and a foot race. The giants won through using magical trickery, but ya. Straight out of norse mythos.
Imagine the half crazed aspirant going through the most harrowing ordeal of his life on the tundra, only to be utterly roasted by rhyme spiders

The thing is, if they had succeeded, The Emperor would have found out about Horus treachery and would have altered the heresy
Instead they crippled two of the most powerful forces on terra and trapped the emperor there on the throne.
It doesn’t really matter why someone tries to do something the outcome is what matters, and as usual for the thousand sons, they and magnus specifically thought they knew better than everyone else and instead fucked over everyone.
So, I have a home made space marine chapter that is descended from the space wolves called the flaming tongues. They are a part of the cursed founding, and were an attempt to remove the wolfen curse from the space wolves and it worked. The problem is the curse of the wolfen got replaced with the curse of the drunkard as in they are all alcoholics. They also have a mutation in their acid spitting gland which lets them spit napalm hot enough to cook a space marine in armor. They also have a two other mutations one in their muscles which makes them stronger the more alcohol they drink, and the other makes them more resistant to the warp which makes them especially effective against chaos, and their librarians can just spam psychic powers without concern. They are a fleet based chapter with their ships being named after various alcoholic beverages like the ISS IPA or its sister ship the ISS Unfiltered IPA, and every ship is equipped the the means to produce an endless stream of alcohol. Their recruitment process is similar to the space wolves where there are multiple steps accept they just hand you a really strong gene seed cocktail, and if your conscious after downing it your drunk behind is strapped to a table for organ implantation if not then they just shoot you out the airlock. They have a bright red color schemes and my home group even came up with unique rules for them like the ultra marines get.

The only thing I hate more than Space Wolves is their primarch. They are as subtle as a tank and they can go toe to toe with Ultramarines when it comes to the plot armor.
Toe to toe? These guys humilliated the inquisition and the grey knights _in a grey knight's book_ . They also killed Gazkull one on one. And their chapter master goes around killing with a khornate axe without getting tainted. These guys are Matt Wards' ultramarines wearing a fur coat.
