The Transformers was also good, but G.I.Joe was the one iconic series, later the Ninja Turtles arrived as the newest icons. But the 70's for me, the Superfriends. The DC animated shows. Aquaman, Batman, Superman, and the Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, Iron-Man, the Hulk, and the Fantastic 4️⃣ were also on the top! It was a legendary time to be a kid for sure!

When u watched this as a kid , you're like wow , this looks so Cool . But that intro is Very Powerful (Esp when Duke Picks up the Flag & Takes it to the Statue of Liberty) since Gi Joe fights against a Terrorist Organization . So it's a Cartoon but the Symbolism is Very Real .
I'm 52 and I get the same feeling.... when Duke yells out "Yo JOE!".... and when Alpine cracks that Firebat's windshield, and the chorus goes "They sound the Battle cry.... Yo Joe! YO JOE!" puts a lump in my throat every time.

Animation is top notch. I greatly remember this as a kid. Magnificent. Tied up loose ends even so with a somewhat story line arc. Cobra-La was totally unknown up to this point. It came on regular T.V as single episodes in the late 80’s. This cartoon stands the rest of time.
Gi Joe largely holds up as a cartoon. Its certainly geared for kids and has its cheezy moments...but compared to HeMan which does not hold up, even TMNT...after the first 5 parter that show is awful. Transformers first two seasons hold up, 3 and 4 are better than the DiC years of joe at least. Which sunbow had gotten to do a season 3. It I was hasbrow brand management, they should commission a season 3 of the original cartoon, since the writers had plotted it and Dixon is still alive anyway so they could put that on Netflix. I know they run GI Joe on RUclips, but throw it on Netflix and announce a 3rd season revival. Boosts viewership, which gets it trending, maybe some kids start watching it.
I am surprised anyone from Cobra survived the end. Not even members of Cobra- la did except Golobulus and Cobra Commander. They should have made a third storyline about that. Golobulus discovered he, too failed. Not only that, his creation Serpentor is dead, his lackeys are dead, Cobra is dead, and his civilization is dead. Only person lived of his people is that worthless filth, Cobra Commander .

My two military heroes are R. Lee Ermey and Sgt. Slaughter. I come from a military family that loved wrestling and war movies...those guys were more uncles than my actual uncles. When my dad came back from leave, he'd always ask, "Is Sgt. Slaughter gonna come?" Meaning ,was I a good kid or not while he was away...my response was always, "Not for me, sir." Little did I know that he got to talk to my mom while he was gone...I didn't have to. I was a legit good kid. My brothers, less so. He was just seeing if I'd narc out my brother's, and I never did. Should have, but didn't.
Fun fact: This movie was supposed to be released in theaters before Transformers the movie was released and had they stuck with that plan, Duke definitely would have died. It was only because they switched the release order, and saw the reaction to TFTM that they decided to not only air GI JOE the movie as a miniseries instead of giving it a theatrical release, but to also put Duke in a coma instead of killing him off. … what’s wrong with this movie’s script, however, is that Cobra La assumes it only has to do away with the humans, but that one episode from Transformers Season 3 where Cobra Commander shows up proves the two shows take place in the same universe, so Cobra La has to deal with GI Joe, the Autobots and the Decepticons - and you know Megatron ain’t gonna share Earth with snake people
what's wrong with the movie and season 2 is that they made Cobra Commander look like a cowardly idiot. In G.I. JOE Retaliation, the Cobra Commander is wicked cool.
Yes but lets be honest, Duke dying doesn't hold a candle to Optimus dying? I mean that was like Superman dying, and it was the main reason it bombed, parents were outraged because the kids were devastated. Kudos for Hasbro for being so ballsy. My son actually loves Rodimus because of it.

For those who don't know, Duke was actually supposed to die. When Scarlet says he's in a coma, she was supposed to say he's gone. Due to the backlash from killing Optimus Prime, they decide to change the story and have him survive.
She never actually said anything. They kept that shot silent to sink in the fact that he's passed on. The other guy even says to prepare a funeral for their comrade fallen in battle

Even to this day, the opening sequence with Pythona infiltrating Cobra brings chills to my skin. When I was a kid, i remember being in aw of this beautiful assassin doing what GI Joe hadn't been able to do ever with all their troops and vehicles. I wanted a figure of her so bad, and to this day, it is a crying shame they never released a full retail version of her.

Who else there has experience to lead an offense while Serpentor wasnt around? Commander proven to have most brain power of the villains despite their bitterness Also In the last episode of the series some of Cobra were secretly planning to rebel against Serpentor.
Cobra Commander should have left a long time ago. That is why he is incompetent leader. He is alien snake being? Read The Prince by machiavelli, Cobra-la. Chose an incompetent leader, you get one especially one that is not someone who isn’t human to begin with.

My favorite movie scene ever, Baroness running out of the civilian lab, taking off her helmet, and whipping around her raven black hair laughing her laugh. Ahhh! And the way she leaps over the chain link security fence. My childhood crush on The Baroness still burns like a bursting white phosphorus bomb!!!
The only person that I feel bad for in this film is poor Cobra Commander. After all of these years of doing what he can do defeat the Joes, his own camp sold him out. Stuck in the middle with no way to turn. Damn! He got it the worst!
I think this show could have done with a more sinister version of cobra commander. The threat would have felt more real and seeing the joes win upriver it took good old effort and ingenuity to triumph. Imagine Duke fighting Cobra Commander and rather than retreat he can easily handle the Joe, but then you get Snake Eyes to join in and then Cobra Commander struggles with the two soldiers. It would have been like thundercats when Lion-o would struggle to fight a serious Mumm-ra, and his victory was that much sweeter. Perhaps this movie could have been Cobra Commander calling upon the forces of Cobra la to finally crush the joes, hell it could have been Dr Mindbender being de-evolved as a message to his other subordinates. “Never trust a human to do a Snake’s job.”

Loved watching in the 80s! When my son got old enough I bought the seasons and movies for him to watch, he was blown away, glad to have passed on the torch lol.
35 years later, I’m remembering the dialogue just before they say it... “An itty bitty ditty bag...” And you gotta admit, for a world created for a one off movie, Cobra-La is pretty cool! I genuinely teared up at “we all go home or nobody goes home”
Me too that’s why I respect Sergeant Slaughter so much. He never give up or abandon a fellow Joe despite Hawk nearly have Falcon turned to the dark side if it wasn’t for Duke’s interference in which I kinda feel he should be penalized for Falcon’s screw up in some sizes, shape, or form. lol
I remember how excited I was when this movie came out, thinking it would usher in a whole new (3rd) season in the afternoons. I also remember being extremely disappointed when I turned on the tube that Fall and realized there was no 3rd season. Either way, I'm glad they made this movie. This will always be the best Joe movie in my humble opinion.
So I was 7 or 8 when this came out. This movie had some of the greatest dialog EVER. I remember having to look up some of the words they used because they were beyond me. I love how they didn’t dumb down the dialog for us but made us step up to it. Seriously, the opening dialog (from 4:48-7:32) is nearly Shakespearian in its eloquence!
One more thing, in my head canon, Chuckles is a recovered and reprogrammed B.A.T. He's the first in a pilot program. That's why he's designed to look human to gain public trust. Here's why: 1)He doesn't speak 2)He threw a rocket at a HISS! How strong do you have to be to do that? 3) He spun the Tomahawk's rotors fast enough to jumpstart it. Then he rode ON TOP of it! 4) When the Tomahawk crashed, he was the FIRST ONE out helping the others. To recap: he was riding on top of a helicopter that crashed through a building and was total unscathed! Dude's a robot.
Never thought I'd pity a megalomaniacal terrorist leader but Cobra Commander got the shaft if you think about it: His army refusing to vouch for him, made the scapegoat for Serpentor's blunders when the great emperor assumed high command, convicted in a Cobra-La court by his own people, and devolving into a snake after a second exposure to the spores. Even his origin story is pretty tragic: Scientist disfigured after getting sprayed by spore fumes then given the unenviable task of world conquest, something he had difficulty achieving.
That's true. If you look back at all the GI Joe movie still this one Cobra failures came from other cobra agents who was trying to push their own agendas.
Cobra- La set him up for failure. I am surprised he was able to recruit an army so fast, able to survive the cold arctic to get to the humans, and he had to come up with human currency, language, human military strategies, and know their cultures. Someone had to have helped him survive. He did accomplish a lot. He knew nothing of the people he was supposed to conquer.
Drove past my old Elementary school the other day while on the way to visit my brother. Saw that the entire building had been torn down and rebuilt, but they also tore down the 3 separate playgrounds they had for the school and the various jungle gyms that used to be there. Nothing was put up to replace it. Genuinely a sad time when jungle gyms are considered to be too dangerous for kids now. It's pathetic really and I don't care how old it makes me sound to say it.
Burgess Meredith, Sgt Slaughter, AND Cobra Commanders backstory. As a 10 year old, I lacked the maturity to appreciate the magnitude of it as a science fiction piece but it was a pretty heavy film. I'd put it right up there with Heavy Metal.
They made 2 audio changes to keep Duke alive. Duke actually died in the original cut, and they had already animated it, but when so many people were upset about Optimus Prime dying in the Transformers movie, they made 2 simple audio changes to keep Duke alive. When he dies, they changed the line to "He's gone into a coma" instead of "He's gone". Then later you just hear a radio message after the final battle say "Great news, Duke's come out of his coma." They never show anyone say that line since it wasn't in the script nor animated. Just a simple audio line added after production. Then you see the Joes celebrate the win, but instead made it look like they were celebrating Duke living. Notice they never actually showed Duke again.
I am a Transformer G1 fans first, but much respect to this GI Joe the Movie intro. The live Action movie franchise is no way close to the original GI Joe.
I watched both Transformers and GI Joe movie today, and I thought both of them were good. Transformers was all out mayham while GI Joe had a story and alot of action.
What I loved about this series was that it didn't treat kids like idiots. The creators all took the visual art, the plot, and the dialogue seriously. It's just a great movie and has meaning for adults as well as kids. Love G.I.Joe.

I am surprised anyone from Cobra survived the end. Not even members of Cobra- la did except Golobulus and Cobra Commander. They should have made a third storyline about that. Golobulus discovered he, too failed. Not only that, his creation Serpentor is dead, his lackeys are dead, Cobra is dead, and his civilization is dead. Only person lived of his people is that worthless filth, Cobra Commander .

As an English kid watching this in 1991 aged nine I was blown away by so many epic moments it almost turned me into an American - the intro, the opening stealth scene, the hugely epic fights, amazing music and quotes - but the one line that has stuck with me for over 25 years is ruclips.net/video/eg3JoP0a6yg/видео.html - "This is for Gung-ho, Alpine and Bazooka - this is for Falcon - this is for ME - this is FOR DUKE - and THIS. I constantly use that Big Lob quote too 😂. My entire shift pissed off our Chief at the range by quoting Big Lob from the obstacle course .

My two military heroes are R. Lee Ermey and Sgt. Slaughter. I come from a military family that loved wrestling and war movies...those guys were more uncles than my actual uncles. When my dad came back from leave, he'd always ask, "Is Sgt. Slaughter gonna come?" Meaning ,was I a good kid or not while he was away...my response was always, "Not for me, sir." Little did I know that he got to talk to my mom while he was gone...I didn't have to. I was a legit good kid. My brothers, less so. He was just seeing if I'd narc out my brother's, and I never did. Should have, but didn't.
Fun fact: This movie was supposed to be released in theaters before Transformers the movie was released and had they stuck with that plan, Duke definitely would have died. It was only because they switched the release order, and saw the reaction to TFTM that they decided to not only air GI JOE the movie as a miniseries instead of giving it a theatrical release, but to also put Duke in a coma instead of killing him off. … what’s wrong with this movie’s script, however, is that Cobra La assumes it only has to do away with the humans, but that one episode from Transformers Season 3 where Cobra Commander shows up proves the two shows take place in the same universe, so Cobra La has to deal with GI Joe, the Autobots and the Decepticons - and you know Megatron ain’t gonna share Earth with snake people
what's wrong with the movie and season 2 is that they made Cobra Commander look like a cowardly idiot. In G.I. JOE Retaliation, the Cobra Commander is wicked cool.
Yes but lets be honest, Duke dying doesn't hold a candle to Optimus dying? I mean that was like Superman dying, and it was the main reason it bombed, parents were outraged because the kids were devastated. Kudos for Hasbro for being so ballsy. My son actually loves Rodimus because of it.

The director wanted it to be like Transformers live action where they brought Optimus back, Hasbro told him no, they're trying to sell the new line of toys.
If they ever released a Starscream Headmaster, I would want to see Cobra Commander as the minifigure.

For those who don't know, Duke was actually supposed to die. When Scarlet says he's in a coma, she was supposed to say he's gone. Due to the backlash from killing Optimus Prime, they decide to change the story and have him survive.

Even to this day, the opening sequence with Pythona infiltrating Cobra brings chills to my skin. When I was a kid, i remember being in aw of this beautiful assassin doing what GI Joe hadn't been able to do ever with all their troops and vehicles. I wanted a figure of her so bad, and to this day, it is a crying shame they never released a full retail version of her.
You know super villains they are mysterious especially their background

The only person that I feel bad for in this film is poor Cobra Commander. After all of these years of doing what he can do defeat the Joes, his own camp sold him out. Stuck in the middle with no way to turn. Damn! He got it the worst!
Serpentor deserved Cobra Commander's fate more than he did.
I think this show could have done with a more sinister version of cobra commander. The threat would have felt more real and seeing the joes win upriver it took good old effort and ingenuity to triumph. Imagine Duke fighting Cobra Commander and rather than retreat he can easily handle the Joe, but then you get Snake Eyes to join in and then Cobra Commander struggles with the two soldiers. It would have been like thundercats when Lion-o would struggle to fight a serious Mumm-ra, and his victory was that much sweeter.
Perhaps this movie could have been Cobra Commander calling upon the forces of Cobra la to finally crush the joes, hell it could have been Dr Mindbender being de-evolved as a message to his other subordinates.

Me too that’s why I respect Sergeant Slaughter so much. He never give up or abandon a fellow Joe despite Hawk nearly have Falcon turned to the dark side if it wasn’t for Duke’s interference in which I kinda feel he should be penalized for Falcon’s screw up in some sizes, shape, or form. lol
I remember how excited I was when this movie came out, thinking it would usher in a whole new (3rd) season in the afternoons. I also remember being extremely disappointed when I turned on the tube that Fall and realized there was no 3rd season. Either way, I'm glad they made this movie. This will always be the best Joe movie in my humble opinion.

So I was 7 or 8 when this came out. This movie had some of the greatest dialog EVER. I remember having to look up some of the words they used because they were beyond me. I love how they didn’t dumb down the dialog for us but made us step up to it. Seriously, the opening dialog (from 4:48-7:32) is nearly Shakespearian in its eloquence!
One more thing, in my head canon, Chuckles is a recovered and reprogrammed B.A.T. He's the first in a pilot program. That's why he's designed to look human to gain public trust. Here's why:
1)He doesn't speak
2)He threw a rocket at a HISS! How strong do you have to be to do that?
3) He spun the Tomahawk's rotors fast enough to jumpstart it. Then he rode ON TOP of it!
4) When the Tomahawk crashed, he was the FIRST ONE out helping the others. To recap: he was riding on top of a helicopter that crashed through a building and was total unscathed!

Never thought I'd pity a megalomaniacal terrorist leader but Cobra Commander got the shaft if you think about it: His army refusing to vouch for him, made the scapegoat for Serpentor's blunders when the great emperor assumed high command, convicted in a Cobra-La court by his own people, and devolving into a snake after a second exposure to the spores. Even his origin story is pretty tragic: Scientist disfigured after getting sprayed by spore fumes then given the unenviable task of world conquest, something he had difficulty achieving.
That's true. If you look back at all the GI Joe movie still this one Cobra failures came from other cobra agents who was trying to push their own agendas.
Get all the glory when you win, all the blame when you lose. Leadership is a fickle beast.

Cobra- La set him up for failure. I am surprised he was able to recruit an army so fast, able to survive the cold arctic to get to the humans, and he had to come up with human currency, language, human military strategies, and know their cultures. Someone had to have helped him survive. He did accomplish a lot. He knew nothing of the people he was supposed to conquer.

Drove past my old Elementary school the other day while on the way to visit my brother. Saw that the entire building had been torn down and rebuilt, but they also tore down the 3 separate playgrounds they had for the school and the various jungle gyms that used to be there. Nothing was put up to replace it. Genuinely a sad time when jungle gyms are considered to be too dangerous for kids now. It's pathetic really and I don't care how old it makes me sound to say it.

Burgess Meredith, Sgt Slaughter, AND Cobra Commanders backstory. As a 10 year old, I lacked the maturity to appreciate the magnitude of it as a science fiction piece but it was a pretty heavy film. I'd put it right up there with Heavy Metal.
This movie has so much redeeming value on awesome character development! What a childhood classic!
They made 2 audio changes to keep Duke alive. Duke actually died in the original cut, and they had already animated it, but when so many people were upset about Optimus Prime dying in the Transformers movie, they made 2 simple audio changes to keep Duke alive. When he dies, they changed the line to "He's gone into a coma" instead of "He's gone". Then later you just hear a radio message after the final battle say "Great news, Duke's come out of his coma." They never show anyone say that line since it wasn't in the script nor animated. Just a simple audio line added after production. Then you see the Joes celebrate the win, but instead made it look like they were celebrating Duke living. Notice they never actually showed Duke again.
Still the most epic cartoon movie intro in movie history!

I watched both Transformers and GI Joe movie today, and I thought both of them were good. Transformers was all out mayham while GI Joe had a story and alot of action.

I had nearly forgotten just how good this movie is.
What I loved about this series was that it didn't treat kids like idiots. The creators all took the visual art, the plot, and the dialogue seriously. It's just a great movie and has meaning for adults as well as kids. Love G.I.Joe.
