- The DIC G.I. Joe cartoon series began with a five-parter called "Operation: Dragonfire," where G.I. Joe and Cobra battled around the world for sources of a mysterious energy called Dragonfire to power a new weapon.
Now available in one movie length episode!
Operation Dragonfire is owned by Hasbro and DiC animation studios - obviously.

This “movie”; the actual movie with Cobra La, “Worlds without Ends” and “Arise Serpentor Arise” were my favorite Joe cartoons. The joes actually seemed like they might lose and Cobra was a real threat. That’s what made them great! Thanks for sharing this 😊
SGT DH, welcome to the Slaughterhouse 😎
i actually liked this better than the Serpentor movie. I remember waiting for new episodes of this one and Serpentor seemed kinda lame lol... Cool idea at first with the DNA and all but then it just went downhill
Mines was the wrong stuff. It had a cool message!

Yo Joe! Thanks for sharing, I love stories like this
I was a child of the 1980's. I never cared for the DIC continuation of GI Joe, except for the five part pilot, Operation Dragonfire for doing a good job in reset everything to the dynamic for Cobra that it was in the first season of GI Joe.
Operation Dragonfire is the best of the DIC era in my opinion 🙏
1:13:05 When Destro "Dumped" Zarana! 😂😂😂😂 Freakin Hilarious!!!!!!
😂😂😂😂 Welcome to the Slaughterhouse Bradman77 😎
Zarana is a loser.
Hell, I wish I had one of those back in the day!! I would've put that to really good use!! LMFAO 🤣
The first season (1990-1991) of the DiC series was mainly standalone episodes that focused on establishing new team members and plots. After the "Operation Dragonfire" miniseries in 1989, the DiC show lowered the animation budget and began a series of two part episodes, which often told a deeper story involving more dramatic life and death situations for the Joes. The theme song called "Got to get tough... Yo Joe!" and underscore for both seasons (1990-1992) were provided by Stephen James Taylor.
Thanks for the info! Welcome to the Slaughterhouse susanfit47
Doesn’t make sense if the first season is 1990 while Operation Dragonfire" miniseries was in 1989, the mini series should be after the first season and not before 😡
@@luyenhuynh3747Think of the mini series like a show pilot. This miniseries was AFTER a real American hero and Gi Joe the movie. GI joe in particular did many five part episodes in the middle of their seasons.

Wow the dropoff in quality from Sunbow is light day to night. At least my favorite character C.C. was transformed back into a 'humanoid'
Welcome to the Slaughterhouse jlusk999
...and no reference to him having once been a snake was ever made again. Even in this mini-series, his face goes back to normal, human looking skin the second he puts on his old uniform.
One thing I'll never complain about the DIC era is the music. That beat that starts at 16:55 is awesome, and I wish there was a way to hear it on its own and for bit longer.
@@DarkWizard83 it's pure 🔥
I will say, I like how Scoop's story was handled in this mini-series. Because he just was another unwitting victim of Cobra's manipulations by being tricked into thinking G.I. Joe destroyed his parents' home in the hopes to recruit him, which made Leonard realize he screwed up and wanted to make things right.
I completely agree. Welcome to the Slaughterhouse Bryon 😎
This is excellent. I like the fact that also the Sunbow music is used here and there, as to ease us into the new series. Animation of the vehicles is just beautiful.
Welcome to the Slaughterhouse Mark! This was the best of the DIC animation in my opinion. It wasn't all bad from here but it was of lower quality for sure
too bad about the awful voice dubbing
Some of the music is actually stock music made by robert j walsh, the guy who did most of transformers soundtrack.

Some of them like General Hawk, Duke and Scarlett will appear later in the series but they will look and hear so different that they are practically new characters.

AYYY MY MANS COBRA COMMANDER BECAME A MAN AGAIN!
Or, rather, "something approaching a man" as he put it.
Watching my fav G.I. Joe character slowly degenerate into a snake in the movie all the while saying "I was once a man" was rather disturbing, glad to see him back as basically his old self. Love how that line was also the first thing he said when he was changing back in this, nice call back to the movie. And he finally got vengeance on Serpentor as well, all the while acting like his regular old self, attitude and all! Loved seeing that!

well, serpent-man.
@@sharanquiett9972 I mean ok… but if you watch, he didn’t become a man.. he turned from a mutated cobra into a humanoid serpent man, and stayed like that. In the cartoon continuity cobra commander was either a cobra la nobleman who was disfigured… a mutated cobra and finally a serpent man.
At least Cobra Commander is back at running Cobra. I really hate Serpentor.

Cobra Commander being a Snake is pretty much the only reference to the movie.
And being in the Himalayas!
It'd be silly for them (DIC) to do references to a movie they had no part in creating. They clearly wanted to take the series in a different direction
@@eastcoastshine2009 welcome to the Slaughterhouse 😎
@@eastcoastshine2009 I'm very impressed with the continuity here. Typically a new production would ignore the previous show, but DIC continued it and even made a powerful story of re-humaning Cobra Commander from a snake.
@@JLvatron Actually the lack of continuity was the problem. They restored the Commander (A short temper narcissistic bully like Serpentor woulda been awful with the kids lol) then went such a different direction with the show that most fans jumped shark
I remember clearly an alternate version of this mini series in which the Sunbow music was then replaced with the music DIC used in their regular 1990 G.I.Joe syndication run.
"Got to get tough"
Looks like Cobra Commander got his revenge on Serpentor.
Serpentor was once a man 😂
I hate to break this to you but if you recall correctly Golobulus is the one who ordered Cobra Commander exposed to the spores turned him into a snake not Serpentor.
Serpentor did dethrone CC as the head of Cobra though. And to be kept as Serpentors pet would be pretty humiliating 🤷
Yes you're right. Goloblus was the one who, placed the spores, in front of Cobra Commander.
Serpentors transformation was only temporary

I had the comic that showed the new cobra commander. I do not remember the story, but I had to wait forever as my mother was at the doctor. We went to a Walgreens, or something like that, and I grabbed snacks, drinks, and the G I Joe comic. I wish I still had it. I thought the new cobra commander look was epic.
Thanks for sharing! I love stories like that. Really takes me back to my own childhood. Welcome to the Slaughterhouse Wynfrith
He wasn't the real C.C. in the comic but an imposter that took his place when they thought he was dead. The comic and animated series both had different continuities.
In the comic the “Armored Cobra Commander” was one of the “Freds” (Crimson Guardsmen) who took the chance that no one would recognize him in the armor when CC was thought dead. It was decided that since the Baroness was the only one who had seen CC’s real face she would identify if this new CC was the real thing. They went into a private room and made a deal so Baroness told everyone he was CC. The real CC showed up later and killed him and took his command back.
The Armored suit is still my favorite version of CC. I also liked the Armored version of Serpentor in the DDP comics but I was in the minority of people that liked those comics
I have no idea this even existed. Cobra Commander came back to life or humanity. That's how he got the new suit. As a kid I knew had a new suit but I didn't know anything about this. Or maybe I did maybe I just don't remember. But I don't think I saw this LOL I was always thinking God Cobra command that has such a terrible ending. Once a man LOL but he came back huh

This is basically the Slaughters Marauders Mini-Series
I commented too soon. It's marauders deco of all of slaughter's crew! Too excited.
I loved the Cobra-La storyline in GI Joe The Movie. Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, Pythona were great characters. The back story of Cobra-La was amazing and adult oriented. Cobra-La was an advanced civilization, and then came the ice age. Cobra-La retracted underground, and humans advanced. Cobra Commander's trial and punishment was shocking and memorable. Then they wasted this beautiful storyline in DiC series. And too bad they wasted Serpentor. He was created by Golobulus using the most genius humans' DNAs. Great backstory.
Art work is also terrible in DiC series, compared to Sunbow.
Serpenter sucked imo. It was obvious that they used him to create the Megatron/Starscream relationship on their show in hopes of it renewing interest in their products
Cobra Commander didn’t really have a choice . I always wanted to quit Cobra, help the Joes by giving their secrets for a deal, or forming his own terrorist organization from scratch. He couldn’t go back to Cobra- la.
WIth the sunbow music, which I saw on tv back then and is also on the Shout DVD. I think the DIC music (which I never saw on tv with Operation Dragonfire) might be more common online. I'm sorry that Operation Dragonfire was the only thing GI Joe had for tv in 1989 (for that matter, Mass device and Revenge of Cobra were the only things for 83 and 84). There could have quite a few other miniseries that year if not a whole season, even if there couldn't have been a 1987 or 88 season.
Operation Dragonfire is at least the best of the DIC animation. Welcome to the Slaughterhouse!
I remember watching this when it was on TV when I was in 5th grade, watching it now I realize the superb level of animation. Saw all of the Japanese names among the artists and realize this was more or less the American produced Japanese Anime of GI Joe! How cool!!! DIC should have kept this art style and had less ridiculous stories...
Welcome to the Slaughterhouse David! Thanks for sharing this memory with us. I agree with the level of animation. It did drop off considerably afterwards
Hasbro wanted to go the cheap route and DIC could deliver for them at a much lower cost than Sunbow.

This restored everything to status quo with Cobra.
Though I wonder what happened to Mindbender, Tomax and Xamot?
Welcome to the Slaughterhouse Cunning Smile Good question....I guess nothing good 🤷
Anyone from Cobra that was in the movie's climactic battle and doesn't appear in the DIC series, I assumed died during that battle or the explosion at its end.
That includes Xamot, Tomax, Mindbender, and most of the Dreadnoks.
Do they even use the term Dreadnok after the movie?
@@xazylsclubhouse Serpentor did refer to Gnawgahyde as a Dreadnok in part 1. As far as I know this is the final time the term was used in the DIC show. Additionally, IIRC, Gnawgahyde was the final Dreadnok introduced in the toyline.

I'm surprised Hasbro won't just upload the DiC series themselves. They've put up the entire Sunbow, Sigma 6, Resolute, and Renegades series on their various RUclips channels already, might as well just put the remaining series online as well.
@@0Aberration welcome to the Slaughterhouse 😎👍
Wasn't this the series that had the Joes & Cobra taking on & out a drug lord who actually dies in the end?
It was a two parter called The Greatest Evil

My favourite part!
Thanks for this! I forgot how good it actually is.
It's the best of the DIC animation
@@xazylsclubhouse absolutely. There was so much potential for it too.
This feels so cheap compared to the original cartoon. All the animation sucks, and the voices are horrible. It feels like this was made by High School Freshman. Only thing right is Cobra Commanders voice.
And the Sarge 😅 Welcome To The Slaughterhouse 😎
