The Story of a Spoon

- The Story of a Spoon charts the story of a plastic spoon, from the Big Bang to the Bin Bag, and aims to raise awareness of the effects of over-consumption in our society. This video is an appeal for people to take a moment to think about how the stuff we buy came into existence, and what happens to that stuff when we no longer have use for it.

This ad really made an impression on me. That is why I decided not to use plastic cutlery. plates, etc. for my last house party. I was worried if anything was going to break and how much work it would be to clean up. You know what? People actually used stuff responsibly and nothing broke. And it took the dish washer two loads to clean up everything spotless. I had one bad of rubbish after a party with 20 people. Felt good. Thanks for making me think :-)
A few years ago we had a backyard BBQ party. I set up our regular use of silverware for everybody to enjoy meal and dessert. Some people threw those 'nice metal spoons' in a trash bag! I had to dig them up from garbage. People are so used to disposal items... but somehow I knew it was coming so I counted my 'nice' silverware before BBQ. ;)
PS: Guests were fairly educated people, you know, went to college/univ., have engineering degrees and stuff... sad.
PPS: Still missing 2 small spoons... wonder where they went.
America... F*ck Yeah :(
Perfect example of how "educated" and "eco-conscious" can be light years apart :(
Awkward situations but is probably understandable
After 1:20 I think it would have been way more epic if Eminem sang that part.
Lol.. Is anyone else watching tis in 2019??
@@aimenhamid82 hmmm
Realmente cierto, es increible, y a veces se necesitan estos vídeos para darnos cuenta de lo mal que lo estamos haciendo!! Yo si lavo mis cucharas!!! \\//
The best video on sustainability I have ever seen ! Thanks a lot !
I live in Mexico. And yes, here it's very difficult for them to wash a metal spoon...
"There is no spoon"
SPOILER! :c
I totally agree.
I watched this at school I love this video.
Good story. For a full account, the ending could run a snapshot of ALL SINGLE USE ITEMS - plastic straws, cups, plates, toothpicks, bottles, chopsticks, trays, coffee lids, sushi grass for decoration, "tables" in take-away pizzas, veggie bags, carrier bags, ice-cream spoons, gloves, .... I can think from the top of my head. Anyone can help complete this looooong list?
Hana H. England is banning more and more single use items.Good move.
The list is way to long that is the problem stir sticks , shrink wrap , beer can holders , forks , knives , packaging in 1000000000 difrent shapes and sizes and plasticized paper.
so inspiring
to people saying that metal spoons causes the same issues, you might as well eat with your hands too. A lot of cultures do so.

I love this
thank you for sharing it. I am a Zero Waste Switzerland member
Any musicians out there know the harmonic progression in the background? Sounds like I-IV-VI-V or VI-IV-I-V and I think it's commonly used in videos like this
Спасибо 🤗
Great! I am agree too.

My teacher put this to teach us about plastic spoon lol
The plastic spoons that we get from fast food restaurants Drive Thru's and we just keep using our only metal spoon. But what about the plastic spoon given? Well.. we just store them in our cabinet instead of throwing them but it will be bad for the planet.
Would one of you have the transcript of this video? I would like to use it for my class but it goes fast and I don't have the time to write down what I hear. Thanks!!!!

Who wrote the score for this video?
What’s the call to action?
It's the same with all single use items ...
I use small plastic spoons from ice cream in spice containers, and have memorized how much of each one such spoon hold. Metal spoons of this size are uncommon (I have just 1). The full-size eating spoons and forks that I've seen usually had a sharp edge, which is uncomfortable to put in the mouth, and they felt thin and flimsy overall without a good grip to pry food apart. They probably make them as thin as possible to save the material. I wouldn't use one if I had a choice, especially at home.
Metal can also have a disposable quality if cheap. Aluminum spoons don't last. But stainless steel without any plating or plastic handle is indestructible.

Great! I've got a brain injury so food is difficult to buy, prepare and eat /swallow) MEGA fatigue) and I haven't got a cooker/oven so I sometimes buy micro pasta meals and ready done salads: it really annoys me that they put plasic spoon/fork in EVERY one - I eat it at home (how many others do?) so use my metal cutlery. Their plastic cutlery is WASTE.
I've been saving them - maybe use for my art, unsure what yet. But WHY can't they put them separate near-by so if you REALLY need them you can take one? Have they ever COUNTED how many people actually use them or the fumes when incinerated or landfill costs? Why should WE bear those and not the company?
I try to make my own food as much as possible: FAR nicer but due to my disability and environment I can't always. Sometimes it's hard even to chew and swallow and I have to try rest/sleep when hungry so often can't.
If people buy these take-away foods regularly why don't they put a metal fork in their handbag etc. to use? I bet lots do.
Having BIG trouble typing and extreme stress/panic attacks and despair otherwise I'd write letters and send them back to try force change but at mo am struggling even to eat/sleep properly.
Thank you for your video - for me nice and short (memory/concentration problems) and to the point.
So sorry to hear that you are sick. I am pretty much the same, but not as bad as you. Perhaps you can buy ready food in large portions and divide them into smaller portions and store them in your own containers. Or on good days, cook a large portion of food and freeze.
Hello johanna006, thanks. Actually more injured than sick but I suppose either will do only brain injury and some sickness/illness doesn't get better so I prefer to say I'm injured. Sorry to hear you aren't well either.
Since the very bungled op which injured lots of bits of me my digestion/guts are VERY fussy and if I change what I eat I often have to pay for it BAD after.
So I've lived on mostly a very plain same salad (all through 2 winters with no heat: 10C inside, too) for two years 9 months = VERY dull, sick of it but suits my guts and probably fairly healthy. But often I don't want to eat, have to make myself. When too tired = must rest but can't rest/sleep when too hungry = catch 22.
So no: I can't buy ready done by others, my son's boeuf bourgignon poisoned me = night from hell after it, shame coz it tasted SO good.
On good days when nothing else I MUST do (eg go to laundrette, argue for social security benefits) I occasionally DO make batches of eg spag bol but it takes ALL my energy for the day, hurts my neck, back and hands - and often cut myself as I get tired. So haven't for AGES so living still on salad and sometimes microwave meal.
My story (being sent to hospital but for WRONG reason, they confused my food poisoning with appendicitis because they didn't listen to me/believe me), began with a microwave meal from a supermarket (Tesco) which made me ill in the night. So I REALLY hate eating them and NO idea what's in them = too tiring try read it.
At the moment trying (pushing myself way too hard) to get art work accepted into juried exhibition: theme AND deadline = killer for me, maybe the LAST time I do this. Exhausted but my passion. Just can't do my art with passion AND cook, fact, sad. I used to be able to do so much = maybe as for you?
Us 'spoonies' huh? Invisible injuries/disabilities - so ON TOP we must put up with others' DENIAL of what we struggle with every night and every day. And it'll get WORSE as we age = very VERY scary, the pain unbearable sometimes now...
But NO help for people like us: cleaning (wrenched my neck bad doing it recently now left side hurts/spasms more), cooking, garden, paperwork = because we LOOK so 'well'. You know?
ok tecnicamente si tiene un punto
Please, Add the subtittle in the indonesia language
ich bin zwar kein ökofreak aber das video war überzeugent

I Want to translate it to Hebrew, but it's not possible, what can we do ?
A solar nebula forms into solar systems.
One of them has a planet Earth.
Asteroids hit the Earth.
There is carbon on the Earth.
There are minerals in the Earth.
Humans appear.
Then there are geologists and miners.
The miners find the diamonds.
The diamonds are put on rings.
A merchant grabs the diamond rings.
You select the ring and pay for it.
And then you propose.
Ur welcome

This story is so dramatic just for a spoon
What-
I don't want to insult any efforts for a green life but... efforts have to list alternatives to pollution-related items that are 100% green... and they never do that. After all, what about the pollution from the computers we all use? And they use? You can't get 100 metal spoons for a big party, that's pricey. It takes pollution to mine the metal. It takes energy to make clothes. It takes energy to make good food. Animals get abused for food, milk, scientific experiments, and just hunting for the fun of it. Fishing too. It takes electricity to build cities, houses, and buildings. It takes energy for LIFE.
Best speech I ever wrote as a RUclips comment!!
But wait, these guys are right!! If less oil would be used for these shitty plastic stuff, that break all the time, more oil can be transformed in to good old gasoline goodness!!! less plastics = more gasoline
It is so fast
dijiera la lbc yo si quiero lavo yo si quiero plancho y dejo brillosos cubiertos y platos
I agree that plastic spoons are a waste of resources and bad for the environment. I however find that this video comes across more like a "How it's Made" than a critique.

j'ai vu émerger l'ère du plastique et du jetable, et dès le début j'ai pas compris pourquoi "jeter" c'était mieux que réutiliser .. sauf par fainéasserie ..
I washed my plastic spoon today xd
My grandma washes her plastic utensils.
It takes a lot more energy to build the metal spoon.
+JLC but u can use the metal spool looooooot more times, that's the point,
g
Natalia Sachica Wasting a lot of water every time you re-use it, contaminating it with soap and chemicals. Sometimes heating up the water with dish washers. It takes energy to take the water to peoples homes. Can you imagine how much energy it takes to pump all the water it takes to wash all the spoons in the world?
Washing aoiiba is more efficient.
then DONT USE CHEMICALS and save water!
Genialidad de video!

I'm sorry to f**k you the video so cute and well edit, we use plastic spoons sometimes you do not have a spoon, the spoon is not designed for those who do not want to wash the metal spoon.
This is bad
