Total Solar Eclipse April 8th, 2024 time lapse with detailed close-ups in 4k!

- I finally made the proper time lapse with the Sun/Moon correctly oriented ( I got several comments about that in the raw footage video and was expecting that ). There's planes, Prominences, Magnetic Field Lines and even Black Drop Effects from the Lunar Terrain!

Equipment used:
SW EQ6r-pro Mount ( polar aligned before dawn )
SW Quattro 200p ( F/4 ) Telescope at Prime Focus
Meade 950 Solar Filter
Canon T6i camera w/ 1x F/4 Coma Corrector
Video recorded in raw mode and manually focused using sunspots prior to recording.
Post Processing done with Camtasia and Aiseesoft.

I've never heard of the Black drop effect" before, that's wild! This is fantastic work.
Oh this is absolutely gorgeous! Out of all the eclipse timelapses i've seen out there, this is one of the best! It's so smooth and camera adjustments are barely noticeable unless you look hard enough, and there's also that rainbow-like gradient on the diffraction spikes - not the same, but reminds me of this rainbow "ring" that forms right before C2 (diamond ring). Seeing that in person was mindboggling, and i haven't been able to find any videos out there that have something even remotely similar to the in-person experience. This is so well made.

If you're referring to the " peek-a-boos " starting at around 0:50 I was playing " cat and mouse " with the eclipse 🤣I took my filter off about 20 seconds too early but it revealed some interesting features and I just couldn't help myself. I took a risk that could have damaged my camera sensor but it survived.
I saw this one I was in the Canada side of the path of totality 😊❤

This crazy plane was doing loopdiloops in the shadow epicycle style trying to stay in it 🤣None of us saw it until after the Moon's shadow passed us and we were looking back at it. I didn't realize I'd captured it in the footage until I went through it thoroughly a few days later.

I didn't include that footage... Idk why. It was a blunder indeed. I did make a complete gif out of the plane including coming out the other side here in my google drive account. Just click the "gifs" folder. It's a flipped image as you can tell, but still really awesome!

I do have 8k still shots that i took with a 1,000mm Celestron c90 and a Nikon D850. Ineed to make into a timelapse, but work and other things. Heres looking at the back of the camera as i flip through quickly. I think i lost a lot from it being a mirror lens. ruclips.net/user/shortsjzFEE7wiKlQ
I can relate completely. Neither of us are professional astronomers that get paid to produce this footage. I make my living as a transmission mechanic. The only reason I was able to push this video this far was software advantages.

Nice work. I rented a 800mm lens and didn’t get this far. Did you zoom in during totality or was that your editing and cropping here? Even if it’s the latter that is really good resolution
The zoom in's were post processing. Everything was recorded via Prime Focus with a 200mm, F/4 reflector telescope attached to a DSLR camera. It was recorded on RAW video setting. I can't remember what that resolution is for the camera but it's very high, close to 8K so I knew I could afford some digital zoom w/o any " blocks " issues.

I never burned my eyes with the Sun. That's what the Moon is for. Also it looks completely different IRL. You get a wide angle view without the camera glare of the wide angle view, hence how you can see the prominences with the naked eye, but a WAV camera can never pick them up.
A camera also will not pick up the shadow bands fully.... EVER. A few have gotten small glimpses of them on camera but they do the real deal no justice at all.
Ofc there's also the fact that I can't watch this video without me making it first 🤣You're silly.

@@CajunReveler I stared directly at it for quite some time when it was eclipsed, hence me in the non-time lapsed video talking to other people about the naked eye visible prominences and the increasing view of the corona expanding as our eyes are adjusting. I've never heard of anyone having a ring in their vision for long periods of time watching a TSE. During totality, it's so dark, you have zero eye squint.
You can look at it eyes wide open without any natural " squint " reaction. The corona is no brighter than a soft white house LED light under a lamp shade, and the prominences are no brighter than a candle or cigarette lighter.

I saw it and didn't burn my eyes. I used solar eclipse glasses and when I could not see the light of the sun I knew it was safe to remove them and stare at the eclipse. So much better to see it live. Not even the most elaborate camera can show it the way I saw it.

I kinda took it off a bit too early and was... in a sense playing " chicken " with the pre-diamond ring phase possibly damaging my camera sensor. It was already revealing prominences and I got way too excited lol My camera is fine though. It survived.

I bet you could figure out the timestamp for the points of contact
using Stellarium on the PC.
In mine I had time and date turned ON for each frame.
The kicker for me was the Galaxy S23 Ultra was crashing out of Camera app every couple of frames.
Had a Solar Filter taped to the back of the phone so could not capture totality with the phone.
Also the tripod was broken, and wobbly causing all the random issues with the phone.
@@Geoffr524 Stellarium is great for a bunch of different things. I use it a lot for satellite tracking like Iridium flares and the ISS along side a secondary telemetry chart, but for solar and lunar eclipses nothing beats the xjubier website data. It's on par with NASA's eclipse site but a little more user friendly with an interactive map.
