@@Dogtubee In a space like booktube where most of the content creators are women and even POC women outweigh men, yes a white man does indeed diversify the space. Black does not equal diversity. The presence of many different things is diversity and it is not exclusive to skincolor. Age, profession, culture, religion, life expierence ect. All those things will contribute to diversity.

Wonderful video, thank you. I'm an older, lifelong reader and I think "older" booktubers bring so much to the conversation, so welcome. I admire your recovery story. I started reading heavily when I was a lonely and isolated child whose solace was nature and the library. Now, a half century later😂, books still bolster my life and I owe my survival, almost quite literally, to a lifelong love of books and nature. One thought is I hope you do your channel your own way. I think too many get caught up in massive community reading projects and burn out.

What a fantastic newbie-tagged video. Yours is a voice I can listen to for hours. In fact I’ll probably put it in rewatch while I tackle my insomnia. So comforting! Your personal history experience and education are resonating with me and I feel you have a perspective from which I’d want to hear.
My husband is in recovery and has been through it as well. He’s also doing beautifully. I find it has affected our relationships with others. But in a good way. We see more clearly those who are in our lives for the right reasons and we have better deeper connections for it. And we easily and successfully have less “friends”.
As you & I are the same age, so I appreciate your mentioning fantasy series from your childhood. These are what my brother read growing up. His love of LoTR, Dune and so many others was an influence on me. Though I love fantasy, I’m more classic lit. But I will also read just about anything in any genre with a good storyline. Russian Literature is utterly fascinating. War & Peace - even if I didn’t care for the end - is a true favorite. Now,
I feel like I’m watching the male UK version of myself at this point in your video. 😊
Les Mis - I will push through. 😂 I’m so happy you mentioned it. I was having my own doubts.
Dickens - finally and recently read GE, ATOTC, Christmas Carol
Right now I’m halfway through Bulgokov The Master and Margarita. I’m supposed to read it in March with my book club but I couldn’t wait and opened it immediately just to peruse. That didn’t work. lol. It’s just wonderful and clearly a commentary on Stalins Russia- harshly realistic though entirely fantastical.
I am really looking forward to watching your channel! Thank you from the US! Oh and that scarf is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!

I'm blown away by your very kind words. Thank you so much. I wrote my dissertation for my undergraduate degree on War and Peace. I've loved it ever since. I still prefer Dostoyevsky though.
And Master and Margarita has a very firm place in my heart. It was the book I was reading when the hospital called to tell me my mum had passed away, so it's a book I return to often.
Thank you for sending such a heartfelt response. I really appreciate it.

You know I have read Assassin's Apprentice last year and obviously it is a five star read, but when you talked about that spirituality and meditation and connected it to the magic system( Galen's way of teaching Skill), it completely blew me away. Also, I'm a young reader and I started reading just 2 years ago and I'm 18 now. I read primarily to escape the reality and some problems i have been facing. I also like fantasy. I found your channel yesterday thanks to the RUclips algorithm. It's nice to meet you. I am about five years older than you and have always lived in America. Our early reading sounds very similar. I too loved The Three Investigators alongside the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown. I liked L.Frank Baum's books, especially the ones illustrated by W.W. Denslow. I remember spending one summer as a teenager reading through Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever and the Second Chronicles. I too love a good crime novel and have enjoyed Jo Nesbø, Steig Larsson, and Ian Rankin. I read a lot more literary fiction these days and classics that I haven't read yet. From the nonfiction side I enjoy dipping into history and memoirs especially. And I too love to re-read my favorites. Welcom to BookTube and I look forward to more of your videos.

You have outlined your purposes thoughtfully. So good to meet you this way. I relate to what you observe concerning reading more deeply and intentionally. I struggle because of a long habit of starting too many books concurrently. I am learning to keep a commonplace book as a reminder to relate more comprehensively and creatively. I've just turned sixty and I've been writing in a more disciplined manner for four years and I'm trying to establish a balance between reading/researching and note-making and time spent writing and editing. I admire you for sharing your recovery perspective. It can be a powerful driver. May the human connection bring you a blessing Cam. There are not terribly many opportunities to freely discuss books and those conversations can be rich since God is involved and we are each learners. I look forward to how you develop your channel. I do watch quite a few youtube channels with much younger reviewers and I love them but it is nice to have a point of view of someone my own age too. I can relate very well to what you speak of, just trying to get through the media. I've found that it's ultimately not terribly rewarding, but there's just so much of it, and more and more coming out all the time. So slowing down is my goal now. I'll let you know how it goes! Can't wait to see what you come up with. Great channel name by the way! Love it!

i'm about 3 years older, you are my brothers age.. it's been great fun listening to some of your past memories. When you said you taped your music off the radio (cassette) ..well, it brought a smile to me and fond memories. I've recently just 'found my spirit' again by getting back into fantasy fiction, I think it's brilliant. Also, I love bringing Middle Earth to my present moment. My world is more magical and I love just being 'me' after decades of being lost.
i've been going on little hobbit-like picnics by the river near my house to read (along w/second breakfasts or elevenses) and my tin whistle.
I used to do this and it is the most wonderful (free) experience. I found a free reading chair and a standing lamp, dropped it in blankets and tied a long piece of wood to a stool for a makeshift 'shelf' and that's my reading nook!
    Cheers from Virginia! 📖📚🍻

Hey Cam ! I felt like this video came at the perfect time! I was thoroughly impressed at your interest in Soviet Union history, funnily enough I am currently completely my English literature dissertation on censorship within the Soviet Union. I feel like you would have some very interesting points to raise and to contribute. If you do see this comment I would highly appreciate any sort of advice!

    • @CamsCampbellReads
      @CamsCampbellReads  6 месяцев назад +1

Hey! Sounds like a very interesting dissertation. You might want to take a look at a book I read a couple of years ago about the composer Dmitri Shostakovich called The Noise of Time, by Julian Barnes. It's a memoir and really sets the scene for what life was like for artists during Stalin's Terror.
I also talked in my recently published video review of Oblomov of the strict censorship regime under Tsar Nicholas I (died in 1855). Obviously it's pre-Soviet, but it suggests that there was already a strong culture of censorship in Russia before the October Revolution. In fact, it was this regime that held Oblomov's publication back.
      Good luck with your writing!

Welcome! Being on booktube has helped me to remember books more as well. I would love to hear more about how fantasy books helped with your recovery. Fantasy is my favourite genre too though it wouldn’t be obvious from my channel. The Enchanted Wood and The Wishing Chair were my fantasy entry level books too - I read them constantly and still have my childhood copies. I also played The Hobbit on the ZX Spectrum. I got into this to share books for children and just couldn’t resist talking about my own reading! 😂 Love the scarf btw!

That's great that you still have your childhood copies. I bought The Enchanted Wood off Amazon when I had my own family and was horrified to find that they'd been 'updated' and the names of the characters changed. So I found a used original copy with the same cover that I remembered on eBay. Problem averted!
