About ‘Originals’:
The Prince Estate, in partnership with Warner Records, present Originals, a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital, behind-the-scenes role Prince played in other artists' careers. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and JAY-Z.
On June 21st 2019, Warner Records released this extraordinary body of work, sourced directly from Prince's vast archive of Vault recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th.
By the mid-1980s, Prince was dominating the charts even as a writer/producer with songs he'd composed and recorded for others. In addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful full-length albums, he also wrote and recorded endless reels of material for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Occasionally, Prince's original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince's initial take informing their final version of his song. The aggregate effect was a complete saturation and transformation of the pop music landscape, with Prince both leading and subverting mainstream culture.
Several of the iconic songs found on Originals were considerable hits for the artists who recorded them. Sheila E.'s "The Glamorous Life" reached #1 on the dance charts in 1984, while the enormous success of "Manic Monday" propelled the single and its accompanying album, The Bangles' Different Light, to the #2 spot on the pop charts. The Time's Ice Cream Castle, featuring the top 20 "Jungle Love", spent a whopping 57 weeks on the Billboard 200. And in 1991, Martika enjoyed international success with "Love... Thy Will Be Done", a top 10 hit in France, Australia, the UK and the USA.
Originals pulls back the curtain to reveal the origins of these familiar songs, in addition to deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6's "Make-Up," Jill Jones's "Baby, You're a Trip," and Kenny Rogers' "You're My Love." The album also features Prince's majestic original 1984 version of "Nothing Compares 2 U," released in 2018 as a standalone single.

Martika actually wrote the basis of the song and sent it to Prince, which then led to the creation of the song. Without them both, it never would've come to be.
@@akiramenai4973 It was actually written by Martika, as a prayer. Prince turned her prayer into a song and then produced her singing it. But, it was actually Martika who approached him for the project.

Prince found them. Or went snooping, more likely, lol.
But the prayer inspired him to make the music and instrumentation.
The instruments and music is his. Martika wrote the words (prayer).
And he gave the song to her.
... my opinion is that he often wrote music, words or both in much the same way as in ancient times, whem ot came to his more spiritual and religious tunes (Songs of Solomon come to mind...those are real songs, we've lost the sheet music along the way.)

@@Stephanie-hg5nsYou can tell that he did most of the “heavy lifting “ on this song. Not trying to say anything bad about Martika but like The Time and Sheila E, and so many others Prince just gives an artist a tape with a guide vocal that they get to sing over and you get a nice song.

Markita actually wrote this, Prince put it to music for her he is on her version too.
This was a prayer Martika had written that Prince saw & decided she should sing it as a song. He composed the music for it. If I had to guess, based on how IDENTICAL her version is to this, this is likely his demo to show her how he envisioned the song being sung over his music. Her version IS this same music track except hers has a single instrument added in after the line “We are all blessed & so wise to accept….” That’s the ONLY deviation from this track that her song had. So this was totally a collaboration effort - as brilliant as Prince was & genius as well, for this one it took her lyrics & his musical talent to make it come to fruition. And he did that for so many other artists ppl don’t even realize.

Love this man so much. Saw him live in Manchester before he passed. He had lights on his sneakers so we couldn't lose him onstage when dark! At one point a fellow fan and I shook hands because we dug a solo so much it rocked our faces off. You can't do that today. And you can't see Prince today. But we have his music 💘

As much as I wonder how Prince would feel about all these recent releases, I can’t help but love em all. Finally got my vinyl of ORIGINALS and this track is a fire hot mamma jam.
While he was with us he probably thought he had decades more of his career to direct and didn't want backwards looking stuff like unfinished demos but because we were robbed of that outcome by his unfortunate passing I think this is a wonderful way to further appreciate him.. seeing him master a song that he is actually writing for someone else's voice.. shows his genius and versatility :)
