Scottish Government's Deposit Return Scheme could see drinks prices in Scotland rise by a third

  • Shoppers face price hikes on drinks by up to a third under the Scottish Government’s controversial drinks recycling scheme, which has been compared to a poll tax on the poor.
The Sunday Mail can reveal the cost of common items such as beer, water and fizzy juice will soar way beyond the extra 20p-per-item recycling fee when the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is launched in August.
Former cabinet secretary for rural development Fergus Ewing said he was astonished by the latest revelation and launched a blistering attack on the SNP and Greens scheme.
The MSP said: “I never dreamt the party I have worked for for half a century would bring in a policy akin to the dreaded poll tax from Margaret Thatcher.
"In the worst cost-of-living crisis in modern times, the public are entitled to expect their Government will not make things even worse by policies that will push up prices even more, yet that is precisely what the Deposit Return Scheme will do."

If they had any brains they'd know retailers have to raise the price to cover certain costs. It already costs £1 buying it, bring the empty back the company has to give you back 20p. Means you'd be paying 80p so they'll have to raise prices to cover that 20p loss.
Tried this in Northern Ireland already. 30yrs ago. It failed then, it will FAIL now.

This was not in their manifesto. It was part of the ' we will support you ' deal with the Green party. Many SNP members didn't want to join with the Greens but the SNP leadership had to, to stay in power. Harvey & Slater are responsible for this any many other thing that have been forced through in the past couple of years. The SNP may have the majority, but the Greens are running the show. All they need to do is withdraw support and the SNP are out of power.

This worked back in the day, when a pound had 240 pennies in it.
Pop and other bottled drinks were delivered to corner shops and off licences by the crate, then at the next delivery, crates of empties were taken back to the factory, washed and re-used. You got a penny or tuppence for your empty, and it wasn't an economic or environmental miracle. It was also unofficial and entirely voluntary for all parties involved, but it made perfect sense back then because glass bottles were cheaper to recover on the delivery rounds and re-use, rather than keep manufacturing endless new bottle stocks. It became a cultural habit when corner shops held sway over the still rare supermarket.
In the here and now, this can't work. Why? Because some will want to make profit from it - not just recover costs. We buy the plastic and aluminium, we pay the local authority to deal with it, and now this bollocks. There's so much plastic about, because the makers don't give a stuff where it goes once its out the door and on its way to Asda.
It worked in the past because we didn't have plastic, and the kids loved to go to the shop after finding bottles on bomb sites and getting the pennies. It can't work now because it requires all makers, importers, distributors and retail outlets to collectively return to glass bottles only with a much higher deposit to make return plausible, and a complete restructuring of the drinks industry to accommodate direct return, re-wash and re-use processes.
Compared to what it supposedly solves, this nonsense actually opens up a dozen or more issues for every outlet that tries to make it work, and most of the issues relate to costs.
And any shithole litter magnet location in Scotland currently festooned in plastic and broken glass, will arguably remain such if this crackpot buffoonery ever gets traction.
Working for you - the Simply Not Plausible party plus their bought-out parliamentary vote-fixing partners, the ever-so-Green-behind-the-gills lapdogs.

They go for the media headline, all image to keep up the facade and hide the rotten practices, image is everything to them even at the cost of ignoring the situation in Scotland, the kids going to school hungry, the kids that have no proper bed to lay on, the kids that cannot go to school because they have to share clothes.
These eejits in the SNP chase the camera for a selfie or paint ferry boats to make them look more complete, painting in windows, the appointment of a person that has failed in every job given to him by Sturgeon, a person that feels hard done by in life many times because of his skin colour, a man that runs to the police at every opportunity shouting out racism is here and the sad thing is he thinks he is good enough to run a country, thank goodness they only put him in charge till the next election, but how much will he squander before then as the children in Scotland suffer, seeing the worse drug and alcohol deaths in the whole of Europe, education and health gone, they see a man that cannot perform.

Got a man for the new bank yet, got a ferry handy or one that once launched will not be so out of date and not pollute more than a diesel vessel of similar size, examples of miss management in the extreme, going to other lands, Turkey no guarantees there for A1 steel, no carbon negative used there, cheap Chinese junk, they are ridiculous baby boxes, a wealthy contact in Edinburgh from home laughed, what a farce gave it to charity shop, wealthy folk do not need nor want this stuff, they have a bed or crib for bub, not a box that Scottish are given to use, whilst mrs murrell wastes millions, waken up my old friend.

Because if any organisation makes stuff up after stuff up almost every week then they should be pulled into line, Scotland is not run by uncle Adolf yet, but having such naughty words as liar banned from Scottish parliament is a step towards uncle Adolf type country, what was the rational behind this banning of this word, a quick search and it seems no other country in the world has ever done such a childish thing, too close to home, used too much by opposition, making Scotland out to be the joke country of the world, I know Scotland deserves better, don't you agree ?
