Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue #47 - June 1993

- Episode 22 - This week on the show, let's read EGM #47 from June of 1993. This was the very issue that got me into collecting and reading old gaming magazines when I found it at a flea market for 50 cents a few years ago. Electronic Gaming Monthly might be the most recognized and iconic gaming magazine from back in the day, even if it wasn't the best from an editorial point of view.
These episodes are edited for length and therefore do not feature every single page of the magazine, but are still probably extremely long-winded and definitely not for everybody.

If someone asked me ten minutes ago if I would be entertained by a stranger leafing through a magazine and chatting about its contents, I probably would have said no, and I would have been wrong. This is great.
Thanks! Check out the "Let's Read" that I did of a Die Hard Game Fan issue. I tried to up the production quality quite a bit. Thanks for the comment!
Haha, I'm actually watching that right now. I know what you mean, the edits really liven things up and it's nice to see illustrations of what's being discussed. Thanks for the recommendation!
I know it's strange right?
haha damn I literally remember this issue when I was a kid in '93. We were preparing ourselves for "Mortal Monday" that year
MORTAL MONDAY! Do you remember the Mickey Mania parody? Where everyone had Mickey gloves on?
@Jorge Perez I do! haha I remember glancing over my brothers shoulder while he read that issue
For me this was the golden era for video game magazines. My favorite years were from 1989-1994. Screenshots did great justice for the 8 and 16-bit games. Once you get to the 32-bit era, it doesn't have the same charm. My favorites were Sega Visions, Turbo Force, EGM, and of course GamePro
NeoTurboManiac 78 I have a bunch of Sega Visions, and would like to feature one in a future episode. And of course I have tons of GamePros. Did you ever check out Video Games & Computer Entertainment, or Die Hard Gamefan?
I remember Video Game & Computer Entertainment, though not as much as say GamePro or EGM. I remember Gamefan alot from the around the late 90's
This is amazing! I hope you haven't stopped doing these magazine readings. I've only seen a few episodes on console histories, and I'm slowly going through your catalog. I just discovered you recently and my mind is blown!
I will do more in the future, don't worry! Thanks for watching!
Please do!!
***** I just uploaded a new one the other day. Gamepro Issue #4.
Classic Gaming Quarterly Oh I didn't see it under the Let's Read! playlist you have so I thought you only had 5. Thanks for the heads up! Gonna go look ♥
I love this content. These magazines were a big part of my childhood. Keep up the great work!
Damn right I clearly remember having this issue and devouring it over and over for at least 2 months, just like every other EGM issue. This channel is amazing
Thanks Jason!
Heh cool, conjured up a buried memory. 5 years old on a road trip to visit my Dad’s side of the family, my father took out the middle seat of the van (I miss that van) and my older brother and I were laying on a pile of sleeping bags and he was explaining Mortal Kombat to me while going over this issue; I kept asking about Gorro and then I would imagine him battling Blanka from Street Fighter on a grain elevator (we lived in the Midwest).
Thanks for the flashback :)
The envelope art was memorable. My favorite was a Capcom/Sesame Street parody titled "Sesame Street Fighter 2". It was really funny.
I remember that one!
The drawings on envelopes were always so creative and a highlight
This is awesome. I remember sending in a few envelope drawings to the magazine, but sadly I never had one published.
There was so much to love about EGM. It never felt corporate-ish to me, it felt like the writers were fellow enthusiasts who didn't take themselves too seriously. This was in the 2000's though, I never read it during the 90's.
Yaeven I agree EGM had the best editors. I wonder what they’re doing now since the 1Up website shutdown. If you want to watch some funny videos of the EGM editors playing games check out Broken Pixels with Shane, Crispin, and Sean Baby here on RUclips.
This is AWESOME! First one of these Let's Reads I've watched. Takes me back to way too much time spent on the throne reading these cover to cover.
Definitely a great idea for a video series. I don't have many of my early 90's magazines left but I still like to thumb through them from time to time. Looking back at this particular issue, there are so many great games I still haven't had a chance to try out.
+Wil's VG Addiction Thanks, man. If you liked this video, please check out my buddy "Game Escape" here on YT. He is starting to do these. I can't promise that I am going to do any more of them (although I am not saying for sure that I won't, either.)
I had this magazine! Great memories.
Great memories. Thanks for showing the mag in detail. Would enjoy seeing 1994 era Megaplay, 1994 EGM
This channels makes me feel less bad about having lost all my old EGMs. Thanks for content!
Wow, a Turbo Duo with five pack-in titles: that's pretty awesome.
Just found your channel and I love it! I remember all of these old game magazines, I had a ton of them but ended up tossing them out years ago. So many great memories. This is a great idea for a video and I'm looking forward to watching your others. Makes me wish my old friends from back in the day could hang out again and talk about the games we played together back then. Great channel!
Thanks! I'll try to make another one soon.
those turbo duo ads were so good!I still remember that lords of thunder ad.So sick!
I was in the 7th grade when this magazine came out...thanks for the memories! luv the vids and your reviews
Thanks!
World Series Baseball was the best Genesis baseball game by far. Pretty much set the tone for baseball simulators up till the the current generation.
Great issue of EGM. I was a subscriber for many years and I remember getting this one. I'll have to dig my old issues out of the attic.
So many memories… thank you sir
Bruh... Thanks for this. I am 48 years old and at that time (1993) was a big time gamer. I actually did have a subscription for EGM. Watching this video brought so many memories.
I was genuinely excited when these issues showed up in my mailbox. Great memories!
I love it when I run across stuff like this. Subbed.
As a kid who couldn't afford the latest games and systems, these magazines were my way of keeping in touch and being in the know, the result of which friends would invite me over to play their games because I knew more about them then they did.
👍🏽 sweet memories. I had some of my envelope art published there 😀 awesome mag
I remember the Toy's R Us in my city had the SNES on display to play with Batman Returns on one and Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball on the other. Many, many days going there and playing.
Great video. Took me back.
syphic Thanks! If there are any other magazines, or even particular issues, that you are interested in seeing on the show, please let me know and I'll do my best to include them.
Electronic Gaming Monthly, Gamepro and PSM were my jam back then.
I have not checked out the earlier readings, your newer ones are obviously better quality but this is still great,. I have memories of calling game stores and reservations waiting for games to come out
omg what a channel man! what a dig. relaxed worthy presentation. delightful era. i was a huge EGM reader back then. (+Mean Machines,GamesMaster)
that genesis sonic bundle is what i had too.
love this channel !
Dude. I remember reading this issue. Totally remember those reader drawings. Awesome.
Rediscover Film
Same here. The cover looks very familiar.
Yup so do I. I really loved that Mag.
I remember trying (and failing) to do cool illustrations for those.
Fantastic video sir! Thank you for posting this. A great trip down memory lane.....
Play Cool Spot, if only for the soundtrack. It's Tommy Tallarico and it's amazing. Play the Genesis version because it has a built-in sound test so you can check it out. The "Rave Dancetune" that plays during the bonus stages is super fun, for instance. It's kind of a 7-up commercial, but it's got solid challenge and great controls, too. Got my copy for $10 at the local Blockbuster when they were clearance-selling less-popular Genesis titles.
I think this is the first one I remember from my childhood, thanks for your content!
This video is great! It brings back so many memories. Will you be making more of these....(preferably EGM)?
I won a Super Gameboy through one of the drawing contest. I wish I could remember the issue. It was either in Gamepro or EGM since those were the mags that I read back then. I remember the drawing was of Earthworm Jim. I need to get some copies of those mags during that time period to find it.
I have this issue and a whole shitload of old EGM's
.I would tackle the mail man come EGM time.
I remember this issue well. so crazy how long it was.
Nice man, I love going through all my old magazines - mostly late 80's - mid 90's stuff. Its funny to look back at what people thought would happen and the views on games of the time - you often see total classics being panned. Actually those same screenshots for Streetfighter Turbo on the SNES were used in UK magazines at the time, I certainly remember them being in Superplay, which focused alot on Japanese and American games.
PS the response to Mario All Stars was very positive and it sold well - certainly in Europe anyway. That was possibly due to the fact that the NES wasn't THAT common (it was all more about home computers and Sega as far as consoles went) - the reviewers would have played the previous games but still gave it good scores.
+andy7666 Thanks for the comment! I am working on a read-through of an early issue of Diehard Game Fan, so keep your eye out for that!
"Just Don't Smile When They Say You're Grounded..."😆
Thanks for the info about Sushi X, I never knew that but it certainly explains the inconsistent writing patterns!
This might’ve been mentioned already, and I only know this because I just read an article about top-selling games, but the reason Tetris is so high up is tricky but obvious; they count all copies included with the system. So yeah, you can’t play ANY games without owning Tetris also, plus individual sales for replacement copies. 😅
LOVE love this content. Such a wonderful time capsule, and you’re being too hard on yourself about the quality; it feels like taking a trip back in time with a friend.
Love the channel brings back so much memories !! I had this magazine as a kid was so pumped for mortal kombat!! N batman return was awesome
SMB All Stars kicked me in the nuts when it was new. Top tier SNES game for me.
Jesus, talk about a time warp. Thanks for posting this. I specifically remember spending hours pouring over this magazine and this specific issue when it came out. A good time for gaming...
Glad you liked it!
New subscriber here. I love the old magazine reads, I hope you will do many more of them. Great channel.
+Jim Vance Hey, new subscriber! I am planning on doing another magazine read-through as soon as I upload the next video. I am thinking about doing a read-through of EGM's 1991 Super Nintendo Buyers' Guide, although nothing is set in stone yet. Thanks for watching!!
Sounds great! I still remember picking up the 1st issue of EGM back in Jr. High School. Good times.
I loved the cover in the '90s; I must have studied everything in this amazing issue.
This certainly takes me back. This magazine was also sold in the UK, and I remember switching to this from GamePro, which I always found a bit childish in tone. The magazine got to be pretty large, with big thick issues. Ok, quite a few ads in there, but always good content, particularly during the mid-90's when the 32-bit systems arrived. The writers were often quite witty too.
I didn't know that this mag was sold in the UK. Gamepro definitely seemed like it was aimed at a younger audience. I have a couple of the Christmas issues of EGM, and I think they were around 200 pages. Thanks for watching!
haha I had that issue, I was a longtime EGM subscriber until 2007
Funnily enough, I never owned a Genesis. I had multiple NES's, a SNES, several Gameboys, a SEGA Saturn, and a GameGear during that era. I think I loved the Game Gear the most since it was my crutch on long road trips at night. The Game Boy was pretty good, but until Pokemon came out, it just didn't grab me as much as the Game Gear did with Sonic Triple Trouble, Ristar, and Super Columns. In fact, the only game my mom played out of all my systems was Super Columns which, as a kid, I thought was pretty cool. Of course, I loved SNES for Super Mario World among other amazing games, but for portability until the release of Pokemon, the Game Gear was my go-to system.
Bro this is wsup!! I actually have a huge collection of almost all of the egm and gamepro mags mixed up with tips&tricks and many other ones. Nostalgia Lane man 🤘🏽
I was born on June 18th 1993. Im 27 now and this makes me feel old. I had nes and super Nintendo and ps1. With my twin brother we played mortal combat. Top gear overdrive, and MACE. Vigilante 8 and the first SOCOM games.
I used to collect all these back in the day. Die Game Fan was my fav, great job 👍
Die Hard Game Fan
Batman Returns has some bitchin' racing sections and yeah the sidescrolling bits suck. But! There is actually an option to just turn off the side scrolling bits and only play the driving bits so it kind of kicks ass.
Such a fun video. I feel lame watching something like this on the internet, but let's be lame together.
+JazGalaxy If you're lame for watching it then I am super lame for making it! If you like this video, check out my friend's YT channel. He's called "Game Escape" and I think he's going to start doing these live magazine reads. Anyway, thanks for watching!
these let's read videos take us back to our youth. not everyone still has these mags and the comments create a shared experience forum of nostalgia. why is that lame?
If loving classic gaming is lame then i guess im just a big lame.
-Marge Simpson
I had Cool Spot as a kid. I played it now that I am older. I still enjoy it just as much. It's a great platformer. As weird as it is man, I found your channel while watching bithead. I love that guy. Glad I found your channel. Binge watching it.
That's awesome, thanks! Bithead is the man.
I loved EGM but I think Next Gen was my fav magazine--they used to have really impressive quality paper and almost vinyl like covers. Steven Kent articles in it kicked ass!
Absolutely. Next Gen was a great magazine!
Sushi X was mostly played by by a guy named Ken Williams. After Williams left, he was then played by multiple editors. Williams returned in late 96 to play Sushi again. When Williams left for good in 1999, the character was retired.
Wow this brings back memories. I used to eagerly await every issue of EGM 92 through late 94 were the best. That article showing screenshots of Empire Strikes Back was sweet I used to call Babbage's for games gamming is not fun today like it was then, glad I was around back in the 90's.
There is so much nostalgia
Hey guys. Sorry about the shoddy audio quality on this video. I always record sound separately and then mix it back in with the video, but due to a technical problem, the audio was ruined and I had to use the audio coming off of the camera, which I normally throw away.
Back when I got my Super NES in 1994 with Donkey Kong Country as the pack-in, I vaguely remember getting a copy of Super Mario All-Stars for free with proof of purchase and S&H. As far as reception goes I remember me and my friends putting countless hours into that cart. The graphics were just as good as SM world and they had added the ability to save your progress in any of the games to come back later. A great addition and really the only way I saw the endings to 2, 2 USA and 3 up until then.
donttchange Super Mario All*Stars was a great package, for sure. Getting it for free is even better!
Thanks for watching!
I miss EGM and GamePro so much! They got me through so many boring classes in school. You got to know about all of the latest games coming out unlike today where you might miss something being posted on the Internet. I was so sad when EGM shuttered in 2009 right before their 20th anniversary.
1993 was a great year for gaming. My parents finally caved in and got me an SNES after years of begging (until then I had a Game Boy). I remember playing Super Mario World, Star Fox, Street Fighter II Turbo and the censored Mortal Kombat (it wasn’t THAT bad!). The SNES remains my favorite system of all time.
Just got 2002 issue 161 GTA VICE COVER and I’m hooked gonna start collecting them. Great video by the way
we had tons of these mags ....i wish i would of saved them...
Back in '93 and '94, I'd regularly get EGM and Gamepro, and would often read them while taking a dump, and then stack them on the floor next to the toilet; when I would take a leak, a little splashback would get on the covers, so to this day whenever I dig those old issues out of my many stacks of old magazines, I can still see those tiny urine drops of mine from 1993....
Yeah, it's gross.
I've really enjoyed your video, can you do the same with a EGM from 1995-1996 era?
I literally had this. Wish i could go back to that days :(
I remember getting the first gamepro magazine for free when I got vigilante for master system at toys r us. Man that was a long time ago. Good videos.
Wow I had this issue! It's insane to see it again!
As a kid in '93 I remember blowing all my xmas money on Mortal Kombat for the SNES and did not regret it.
This is absolutely gold!!
My brother made me re download cyborg justice. He loved it at the time. Just nostalgia factor..he really liked how you can trade the bodies
Damn...I was only about 10yrs old at that time. I remembered a lot of those games but didn't owned a 16bit system because my family didn't have much money. I would go play 16bit games at my friends houses, overall sweet vid
+Javier Muerte Thanks man, and thanks for watching! Hopefully you have some 16-bit systems now...
Hey Chris. The super fam controllers are always in the mags i have. I wonder who created those shots. It sucks that the US got the purple and grey buttons, but you know what. it's fine. It's what we got and i love it.
EGM USED TO KICK MAJOR BUTT!!
-former 90's tude
Im gonna give you a thumbs up just in case your the real Kevin Nash!
I subscribed. I like your stuff your also give good info on what you're talking about.
Thanks!
Thanks for recommending me this love it
This took me back. All those Turbo Duo ads were effective on me. I was a freshman in high school, and I remember my classmates going in on me hard because I chose to get a TurboDuo with my Christmas money. And Street Fighter is what put me over. I didn't get to play it until I was in my mid 20's. It was good and I think that it would have helped the system. They also should have supplied the six button controllers with the system from the jump off.
Man...I had a subscription to EGM! I wish I keep'em...also had this magazine..
Phoepper Me too. I had about 7 years worth of issues that I threw away before a move, because the damn box was too heavy. 😑
I think I still have this issue! Remember it fondly. Back in those days, the only one I missed was the issue with the Road Rash hologram on the cover. I STILL get mad thinking about how I missed it!
Heh. I remember this one. When I bought my SNES, they had a deal where if you register it, you got Super Mario All Stars for free in the mail. I thought that was awesome. That's in addition to the standard pack-in of Super Mario World. So, I got 5 Mario games with my SNES! BTW, Super Turrican was cool, but my favorite is Mega Turrican on the Genesis. Some of the best music ever in that game and it just plays really tight, with no slow-down, while pushing the Genesis' sprite and scrolling capabilities. That game really surprised me by how good and polished it was.
I seem to recall a rainy Monday in 1993 - it was a holiday, may have been Veteran's Day or something, when I saw the commercial advertising getting a free Super Mario All-Stars with the purchase of a SNES.I rushed out in the rain to the local Walmart and picked one up -- it included Super Mario World in the box, but IIRC, I was able to get the All-Stars game right there for free at Walmart.I got home and plugged the SNES into my 27" Sony Trinitron (which had a Picture-In-Picture feature), and started playing away.I would plug in some headphones to my stereo and listen to CD's while playing these games, and would sometimes watch TV while playing a game in the PIP (at the time I had an NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES).All that in my little 2-bedroom apartment with my black cat named Knuckles (this was before the introduction of the Sega character, my cat's name came from the fact that he walked like he had arthritis in his knuckles from abuse from his previous owner) who would sometimes squirt out kitty diarrhea onto the carpet (shouldn't have fed him canned Kozy Kat cat food I guess).I wanted to get a Laserdisc player back then so bad as a co-worker had one and it was dope, but I didn't handle my finances so well back then, so I couldn't afford it.I would often rent old NES games at this weird, Vietnamese-owned video rental store where the always burned incense that smelled like grape juice; they also did clothing alterations there.I would also play games upstairs in the spare bedroom, where I had a Commodore Amiga 500 attached to a 21-inch Sony Trinitron; I'd sit on a love seat a neighbor gave me that smelled like cat urine, so instead of tossing it (although I always meant to replace it), I just put a bunch of towels on it so it wouldn't smell bad.
Cool spot was awesome. I loved it, I still have it.
I was in the 8th grade when the first Mortal Kombat came out.
I had it on SNES, and after playing the Genesis version at a friends house I didn't care that the SNES version didn't have all the blood and gore, as the SNES version had far better graphics, animation, and sound which for me trumped the novelty of ultra violence.
I still have this one. It's all put together from tape from all the abuse it took. The mortal Kombat moves were key.
My parents and teachers would be so proud of me for reading tonight
I brought a few gaming mags, here and there back in the 80's,as early as 82,I believe. But,I started buying them monthly in the 90's through the early 2000's.I have tubs of them, still looking brand new!
You can get magazine-sized bags and boards (like people put comic books in) if you want to protect them. They’re collectible now, after all.
@@CGQuarterly I never looked at them as being collectable before?Any idea where I can check to see the most sought after ones?
speaks volumes about my personality but I remember the ad for FFCD quite distinctly. Ambrosia :3
Enjoyed it! Pretty sure I read this issue back in the day. It was such an exciting time for gaming. Did you ever read Next Generation back then (it debuted in 94 I believe). Would enjoy seeing a similar video on one of their early issues.
***** I never read that one back in its day, but my buddy has a bunch of those issues. I'll find one that looks particularly interesting and do it for a future episode. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!
I remember walking a mile to the super market to see if the new EGM came out. It was like the most awesome thing when a new issue was on the stand! I would read every single page! Then bring it to school and argue with my classmates over Sega Genesis vs Super NES (I had the Genesis). LOL! To 12-year-old me my whole life revolved around that shit.
I remember seeing this issue and wanting it but it was way too expensive. Eventually I got a few gaming magazines. I remember all these ads, they seem to stand out the most.
yeah spot was prettty cool i enjoyed it as a kid
For the Bonk 3 review, they did specify which version it is by stating the size of the game is 8 megabits, which would have to be the HuCard version. If it was the CD version, they would have specified the size of the game as CD-ROM.
i remember getting this when i was a kid. at “the city” mall in orange ca. its now the outlets at orange.... good memories.
Miss the 90s 😢😢 i was 19 when this came out 😒☹😢😩
Cool Spot was a very cool and visually appealing game. I used to have Road Avenger, it's like Dragon's Lair and I enjoyed it back then for what it was, I used to enjoy unique gameplay mechanics and Willy Beamish was a really fun CD game, I enjoyed that one a lot and had great story.
Man, now I wish I didn't throw away all my EGM, GamePro, and Nintendo Power...would have been amazing to just read them again in print. I know there's scans online but having the physical magazine makes all the difference with full force of nostalgia :'(
