  • Since, high school I knew I wasn't going to grow too tall and therefore I thought my dream of dunking seemed unlikely. Later in the term, I realized many people in my height range were putting down dunks. Between the legs, 360, Eastbay and here I was making excuses as to why I can't dunk. Albeit, these people had genetics that were exceptional, but to solely put genetics as the primary reason as to why these people were dunking is very disrespectful. Many of these high flyers and dunkers had to put in countless hours of work. Genetics alone will not get anyone there.
    So, these past two years, I've put in work behind the gym and the court. This video outlines the product of my work in the past two years. There are a lot of ups and downs just like anything, but I hope you guys enjoy the video and potentially find some inspiration in completing any of your goals.
    The video timeline is between 2016 - 2018. I have not achieved my ultimate goal yet, so there is more to come in 2019.
    Please like and subscribe for more upcoming videos!
    And, feel free to comment on my training methods for getting higher.
    If you have any questions you can DM me on my insta and give a follow! I try to answer all questions.

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  5 лет назад +26

      Yah, it mainly depends on your vertical reach. What is your vertical reach? 46 inches seem way too high to dunk a basketball. Statistically speaking, you would need to be in the 99% percentile.

    • @lundoren5240
      @lundoren5240 4 года назад +8

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад +5

      @@lundoren5240 Yeah, it makes sense. I do think 46 inch makes sense given his height. But also, there are short people with unreasonable long reach because they may have a longer wingspan. Nonetheless, 46 inches is a ridiculously high vertical.

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад +6

      @WILLIAM GREY If your reach is 7'8, you do need 28 inches to touch the rim (Assuming your body is at a straight position). So, it's always + 1-2 inches more to consistently touch the rim because no one is actually in a straight position when in the air.

    Why did you switch from one foot jump to a two foot jump? I jump a couple inches higher off one foot and my two foot is really bad and it seemed the same way with you in the beggining but then you switched your jump. Is there a reason for that, like it’s easier to dunk of 2?

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад

      Hey! Good observation. I switched from a one footed jump to a two footed jump because after I started weight training, I found that the squat was an easy corollary to the two footed jump. My mechanics eventually got better and saw more progress, so I moved to a two footed jump.

    • @Hobe23

      2 foot vertical is very reasonable. You need to be at least 6 inches above the rim to dunk in my opinion. So, getting to 28-32 inches is very possible given the right amount of training.

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад

      Usually the first foot you step on in the block jump is the stronger one, while the other should be more reactive. It might be that your left is reactive, which is why you jump with your left for one-foot jumping. Regardless of what technique you jump with, you should fix the imbalance of strength for your legs.

    I have a question
    Since your 1 foot jump comes with your left shouldnt you go left-right on your two foot jump?

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад

      I think it's the other way around. In a two-foot jump the more reactive leg is the block step (the last step you take). Whereas, the penultimate step has a longer ground contact. So, in my case where its right-left, my right foot has a longer ground contact than my left, which is more reactive. For my one-foot I would therefore jump with my left as its more of the reactive leg (The leg that can convert horizontal speed to vertical speed). But, this isn't always the case and different people might find different techniques more comfortable.

      Practicing technique and work on plyometrics. Either your'e not well trained to absorb the impact from the extra momentum or your technique is very inefficient. I used to be on the same boat and I could improve much on it too.

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад

      I can agree with you in some ways, but I feel like I'm losing valuable vert from the run-up (without the ball( and momentum from my arms. Plus the ball is extra weight you have to carry when you're trying to dunk. For me I got to the point where my dribbling jump is pretty good. Still need to improve tho.

  • @tommymcpheemusic7745
    @tommymcpheemusic7745 4 года назад +1

    I'm 5'7" and can dunk 9'9", but I'm not sure if I could two hand grab it. Maybe under perfect conditions, but then again under "perfect conditions" I'd probably be dunking more like 9'10". If you have really good form a dunk should be easier than a true "two hand" grab, for most people (obviously one then the other is a different story)

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад +1

      If you watch my other dunk attempt videos you can see I don't self lob when I try to dunk. This is mainly because I lack the coordination of self-lobs and haven't really practiced. So, I'm way more used to trying off the dribble dunks. I think if I were to learn how to successfully throw a self-lob I'd be able to dunk 10 foot, if not 9'11. Just by dunking off the dribble, I think I'm losing 1-2 inches of vertical. But, I agree with your assessment in that two hand grabs are usually more difficult than landing a dunk from a lob. After quarantine, I'll for sure learn how to throw self-lobs.

    • @tommymcpheemusic7745
      @tommymcpheemusic7745 4 года назад +1

      @@Hobe23 I'm not really talking about self lobs... just a lot of low(er) rim practice and more focus on actual dunk attempts versus vertical touches will help with the form. Yes you lose height with dunking off the dribble but you really can mitigate nearly all of that if you learn to keep the ball balanced going up with one hand, and make sure your dribble is an additive part of your takeoff. Ultimately the last couple inches are most influenced with how good you are at efficiently getting the ball to the top of your hand to push it down, and if you have the timing precise you can work with next to no rim clearance, perhaps as little as 4-5 inches. You gotta be able to transition from holding it with both hands, to discerning which one hand you put it in with, to getting the ball twords the top of your fingers but not so far up that you end up throwing instead of dunking. Having good upper body and core strength helps a lot with that too, of course grip strength as well. Good luck!

    • @Hobe23
      @Hobe23  4 года назад

      Sorry, I went off tangent haha. I was just saying what was on my mind. Thanks for your input, I agree that I should start practicing on low rims.
