  • Oh this was a good find! There I was flicking through eBay and saw this machine for just a tenner (£20 including postage).
I then did a search of my own RUclips channel for "U2464" AFTER buying this cleaner because I thought I might already own it and had stupidly bought a duplicate.
Turns out I was right and I was also wrong...
Hope you enjoy the video! Don't forget to comment like and subscribe :)

I'm so happy you find this! Even though I don't live in the UK, I do love the vintage and old Hoover vacuum cleaners from the UK and the USA. Very classic and legacy machines!

This brings back nightmares of my sister's Turbopower with the Permabag System 2. It was awful for clogging up. The Permabag washed up nicely but took forever to dry - even in the airing cupboard.
In the end we gave up on trying to keep it unclogged and swapped it over to bags - much better.
    Great video 👍

Did your sister have the early or late Perma System 2? I remember the early versions didn't have the long 'arms', rather it was just a cover on the top that unclipped and you had to bang it like hell to get the dirt out!

@@TheVintageApplianceEmporium It definitely had the 'dirt release tongs' fitted. I'm not certain what model it was. Another family member had a U2878 which lived on for years after being picked up for cheap at Savacentre at London Colney - £69 I think. They had a few of these boxed up with a hand written sign but no other models or choices. Lovely dark green with glitter and autosense.

Another great find. To add, the Turbopower 1000 was launched at the same time as the Turbopower 2 (late 1992), with very little difference (apart from 200 watts on the motor) between the two ranges - in total, I think five new models went on sale at the same time, and it's more proof (if proof was needed) that Hoover liked to cast their nets far and wide...especially as the Turbopower, Turbopower Total System, and Turbopower Junior we still on sale. I mean, why have three models if eight-hundred-and-forty-seven will do? The irony being (as we now know) that Hoover were having big problems shifting stock, so much so it was piling up in the warehouses, hence the "Free Flights" campaign to help sell more appliances.
Also, as an example of how Hoover were a bit blind to what they were doing, if you consider that with these autosense cleaners Hoover were saying that the low power was optimum, and that the higher power was occasional, and that the full 800 watts was the 'boost', then the bog-standard model U2462 should have been, say, 600 watts as opposed to the 800 watts it was, because that too was supposed to work at optimum power...the 'boost' was supposed to be just that - a boost, something that you paid more for etc. This was precisely what Electrolux did when they launched their Contour range; one model was 600 watts and the other was an 800 watt 'boost' model, which - when you pressed the boost button - gave the user about 15 seconds of 800 watts power. The fact that the circuit boards on the Contour failed (to use your vernacular) "for a pass time" and were quickly replaced with a much more reliable variable power control is another story altogether.
I often wonder if anyone actually bothered with the autosense feature on the Hoover cleaners; yes, I can well imagine it was a popular gimmick and that people bought them, but did they use it? For me, I find it so annoying, the way the motor is (seemingly) constantly revving up and down. I was also speechless when (and not so long ago) I found out that these cleaners actually use a MICROPHONE to detect the sound of grit etc. being drawn through the tubes, and thus increasing the power accordingly; I had always assumed that the electronics were measuring the airflow. Not sure if this method is genius or madness.
Another difference between your early and late U2464 is the position of the flex outlet. On the older cleaner it is on the back, but when the Turbopower 3 went into production (around 1994, to replace the Turbopower 1000), the longer stair-cleaning hose had to be hooked onto the back of the handle, and in doing so it would have caught on the flex. Thus, Hoover had to change the position so that it exited from the top instead. This they applied to all the cleaners, not just the Turbopower 3, and I'd like to bet also that at the bottom of your later model there is a hole where the hook for the stair-cleaning hose would be attached on the Turbopower 3
I would be interested to know what the suction chute cover is like on the later model, because for sure on the early model it would be a clear plastic cover, held in with a screw. On later models, it was a clear cover with a yellow clip that dispensed with the need for a screwdriver to remove it.
I remember that as Hoover phased in the scabbard crevice tool (the long one that slots inside the extension tube), they also supplied the original small crevice tool too, until such time they were able to redesign the rear moulding of these cleaners, so that the crevice too slot was absent. Ironically, the last of these cleaners (the ones with the poorer motor that you talked about) also lacked certain tools, the idea being that because the cleaner was cheap, you didn't get all tools with all models. Fair enough, but they still left a space for them on the cleaner!
Interestingly, while these cleaners were - as you so rightly say - very well made, very popular, and available over many years in many models, you don't see many on ebay or facebook marketplace - and I know, because I wanted one recently...Do you know, I scoured the internet from top to bottom, could I find a Turbopower of any type in any condition? Could I buffalo! (I think you'll find there's spam on that). This was in stark contrast to the equally popular (but much less well built) Electrolux Contour cleaners, the likes of which are as common as Sheridan Smith on a mainstream TV channel. I wonder why...I mean really, I am wondering why. There's no shortage of Contours for sale in my county, according to facebook.
Thank you again for your kind words on my reply on another of your videos - it means such a lot to know I have been of both help and interest - the only other channel I ever respond to is that of the Isolation Creations. If you don't know who they are, you must check them out.

I had no idea the TP 1000 launched at the same time as the other TP2 machines, I honestly thought it came later.
AND I didn't know the machines used a microphone to "sense" the dirt coming into the bag. You have to admit that's a bloody clever idea. I thought it was a (Dr Evil voice) "Lay-Zer" system where a beam of light got broken. Although thinking about it that doesn't make sense because any particule could potentially break the laser and make the electronics "boost" the motor power.
I personally think that the consumer likely chose the Contour over the TP2 due to the Contour being a much lighter and easier to use machine. Hence why there are more Contours still out there in the wild.

SD M - I'm here, also very much appreciating your input! Heck - you could probably write the book that The Fabulous Dustpan 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 have been - it went on too much about the history & the business, & too little for my liking about the machines themselves, & their evolution.
I too thought that the dirt-detection would have been light-based (broken beam). If they were listening for dirt, they would initially have been examining the relationship on an oscilloscope.

😂what is it with Friends of Dorothy, Hoovers (and specifically Hoover
-brand machines), Sherry and Victoria Wood?? I just laughed out loud at that reference, I mean it was al-riiight, one of the girls came out and helped me pump my tires up....

@@muk8804 My 46 years have been one perpetual apology for when many people in life (Life? Real life?) cannot understand a blathering word I'm saying, and not because I have a mouth full of tortilla, but because it all swings back to something Victoria Wood wrote. Oh how it gladdens my heart to find others who truly understand what on earth you can do with the bricks, who know all about the dangers of poisoned confetti, and can appreciate that while I didn't like to play on her paranoia and take advantage of her physical defects, if someone has body odour that can strip pine they should be told.
Case-in-point, recently when a property managing agent asked me to thrust by their office to collect keys for a house they needed me to clean, I found myself standing in the reception area in front of three middle aged women and a girl on work experience, giggling childishly as they handed over the keys marked 319, and asking if there was a Continental breakfast, a tart, and a Daily Telegraph.
The real irony in all of this is that I genuinely have a maisonette that genuinely backs onto not a cake factory but a motorway, which -though I can't bring myself to give a toss- does mean there's an argument for dusting my nick-naks all day long.
Tonight sees me in a Travelodge in Morecombe, once the town of choice for the great VW. It doiesn't strike me as the place to purchase a lemon acrylane button-through cardigan. It's my last night here and I haven't slept at all well...If I can't get off tomorrow night when I'm home, I may try jamming my head in the tumble dryer & switching on.
