the sad thing is that i get it. as a product designer in my last life, it makes perfect business sense to push the app in this way. the sadder thing is that it's abandoning the original community that gave it such initial success. such is the way of the world i guess :(

@@patkay Isn't part of product designing also the UI/UX? They don't even care about user experience anymore. It doesn't seem to make sense to throw away the roots or the individuality of a platform just for money, because it ends up like what we have now. A cesspool of ideas stolen from people that doesn't work together.

    • @patkay
      @patkay  3 года назад +4

@@professionalpotato4764 while that seems like a logical resolution to arrive at, product design is very much about the artful marriage of business priorities and good (overall) UX. the usability of the product *is actually good*, as in, you know how to use it, and use it well. instagram actually knows its users really well and knows that it has many many different types of people using the app. the sad thing is, when you have to pivot or evolve your main personas to something else due to a business priority, you're inevitably going to upset the cohort of people you were moving from (us, as photographers). they wouldn't make this move unless it ultimately made business sense for them. there are a bunch of incredibly smart people working on instagram, so i get it, it's just a shame that so many of us belong to the original cohort of people who grew the app in the first place.

I feel absolutely betrayed. I'm an artist and it's not only my content that is shoved under the bus it's also the content I loved consuming that is gone. I opened my regular feed and it was just reels. There was no photos, no regular posts. I haven't noticed it straight away, only minutes later when I felt anxiety and my eyes started to hurt from all the action happening on the screen - all these clippy flashing short videos.. it felt like eating junk food, or more like someone shoving it down your throat..I exited immediately. I was making piece with the idea I will have to make videos instead of photos now, but not being able to see what I choose to see on my own feed is just sad. After shoving advertisement in every second post on the feed this is just the last nail in the coffin...

As an artist/oil painter, I used to think that IG was essential to the growth of my business, but eventually I reached a point where the posting schedule was just too demanding for me. Instead of improving Instagram, Mark Zuckerberg wants to add another feature on Instagram by having paid subscriptions for IG stories. So a content creator can choose to price his or her that IG Story to whoever gullible enough to pay for it. Mark (stole) that idea from Twitter that is also working on that feature for its page. I really don't support that idea because it can be a rip off for viewers to watch meaningless paid stories. The problem with the monetization system in these companies' term, the content creator can be corporately controlled. For instance, if an activist makes a content questioning the establishment, these social media platforms can demonetize the user. It happens a lot on RUclips.

@@Trigger-xw9gq No, not just sales. Flickr was/is a pure photo sharing platform for the most part. It still exists but it's a pale shadow of what it once was with an ever declining base and struggling to make ends meet. My point was regarding the value of images for younger, newer users using these platforms. Clearly more of the Gen Z'ers like to express themselves with video and ordinary cellphone photography than with genuinely great photography. So there are limitations to how much a photography platform grow and if it doesn't grow, it's consigned to just stagnate and die at some stage like so many have. yeah, creating photos "for instagram" definitely is a difficult thing to put yourself through, and now, in 2021, you definitely need to have a strong reason and resolve to push through the challenge. RUclips is also a very difficult platform to push through too, but as I mentioned in the video, better than the alternative 😂. glad you're diversifying :)

Switching back to posting on Twitter, ARTstreet and maybe Deviant ART. Instagram just isn't worth it anymore. They're more focused on trying to compete with TikTok and follow trends. They're basically falling down the same rabbit hole RUclips is falling down. And now, they're mass-censoring random accounts. I was almost close to hitting 400 followers on Instagram, then the update happened and i went back down to 300. For years, I've been struggling to get my artwork noticed. This just upsets me.

The problem with photographers on youtube is that you are all youtubers, so you ARE doing video already.
In all these youtube videos you tell use to expand into video, what if we just love photography?
I was using 500px few years ago, then because there were very bad changes on 500px I decided to diversify into 500px/instagram/Deviantart.
In 2021 I am not happy with any of these platforms, I was hoping over the years there will be some new platforms but I don't see them. Facebook was never good idea for photography, twitter is advertised a lot (...by youtubers) but I just don't see it. So I am uploading my photos to 500px/instagram slowly observing death of photography and wonder why free market doesn't work and nobody is creating new photo sharing platform.

There's a 3rd option: you use it for business but you don't care if it disappears tomorrow.
I stopped caring about growth or creating an audience on Instagram when it became obvious NONE of my jobs ever came from Instagram. I use it to find models or locations or to be tagged in my client's work.
I spent a lot of time trying to grow and following the whole "create value for others" bit. But my effort on Instagram was wasted. People weren't following me because they liked my images, they were following me to get value from me for free. Now I let other people market me instead. Otherwise I become a person who is a full time Instagrammer, not a photographer. Huge difference.

As an artist that just wants to post drawings I am mainly wondering if Instagram will take into account when analyzing accounts if the user prefers image contant as producer but also as consumer. So in my simple mind it would be a good enough option if I am as an image creator would get matched with accounts who want to see image content. And I would also think that would serve Instagram, too, so they could keep both directions.

  • @Jackbrsp

Interesting approach. I personally endorse your thoughts on this and as a relative newcomer to Instagram, those are sad news. The algorithm is gonna be even more tweaked in favour of reels/ video format and that will make static content (single images, carousel, etc.) scarce on everybody's feeds. I'll probably try to adapt to use reels to show some curiosity stuff like editing process and timelapses at the same time I'll have to build a site or move portfolio somewhere else. I might think that "instagram is no longer squared-photos app" Is because they won't update their feature in photo sharing, they're gonna develop video feature instead (add more effrcts, add more filters, add more song lists).
Which means we could still upload photo (and photos carousel) but there won't be any update on the features.

See I feel the same way. I always think still photography. When I go out shooting, I almost never think about video and I do try it sometimes to make videos but like you, I never feel fulfilled doing those little reels/tiktok videos. Sometimes I feel fulfilled when I make RUclips videos, maybe because Google actually pays me to use their platform rather than Instagram/Twitter. But I never get the same enjoyment when I try to make videos. I mean don't get me wrong, I think video is cool with all the crazy things you can do with it and like you said, the process of it but its just not fulfilling as still photography is. Seeing all these headlines made me worry that still photography is dying and photography will just become videos and that made me really sad but I don't believe that. I think photography as us photographers know it will continue to live on forever and there will always be people who enjoy a good ol' fashioned still photo and not some stupid tiktok video. Haha.
