Definitely a real life video man. Like I don’t know why people are staying on Instagram. There’s not much reason except for the fact we are already on it.
Thank you for articulating what I have felt for a while. It’s even harder for smaller accounts trying to grow a following because content gets seen less. I used to get posts way out perform the 450 subs I had because they were good content and it got me discovered. Now I don’t even get seen by my followers and the content is just as good if not better. IG has lost its way, it’s watered down what it did well and doesn’t support creators
@@JeffDiffner yeh I guess that’s down to Facebook owning IG, it’s just an ad platform now. Even lots of the accounts I followed went from sharing their passion for something to just feeling like a catalogue. Ads everywhere!
Honestly TikTok should be for short vertical videos, Instagram should be for photo sharing, and RUclips should be for longer form videos. It used to be a perfect set up, and the companies decided to ruin it..
Definitely. I think if IG actually put some time and effort into photo sharing it could've been incredible. Full screen photos, or at least 3:2 and figured out a way to share landscape oriented shots too.
Forget about incentivising creators, Instagram just wants creators to pay to be seen and serve their content as sponsored and have reach, this is their business strategy.
They reward quantity over quality. I search out so many artists and illustrators because I want to see things that make me feel inspired. But it’s hard for these people to grow because they can’t post often enough because they can’t create fast enough. And if they did create fast enough the art starts to really decrease in quality and no one will want to follow. On the flip side TikTok is pushing even the smallest creators if they think a user will like the content. Instagram pushes the people who are posting the most, which is businesses and like you said when you post it feels like no one sees it. It just goes into the ether
Conversation with a few other creators: Instagram is like a giant garbage can. The most you can hope for is to set your content (that you put your soul into) on top of the pile and hope that a few people see it before it gets buried.
90% of the photos in my explore are just reposts, mostly without mentioning the OP. Why would I bother posting when someone else is just going to repost it with a bigger following, even when they quote the OP it's often buried in a wall of text, after they credit their own @s for "discovering", and I *might* get one extra "like" from someone who dug deep enough to find my original post.
I just wrote something similar of what you’re saying here, so many times I find posts that don’t even mention the original photographer that have thousands of likes, the main thing is that people don’t care about who created the content, they just wanna double tap and keep scrolling.
this happened to me a few times, a page reposted one of my images without credits or asking for permission. in an instance they even claimed copyrights to that image. all I had to say was " well I guess you have the RAW file of that image, right?". they ended up taking it down. these pages (unless they are legit communities) try to build another user's account by claiming "he/she" discovered the image. they never mention the OP.
Instagram said they were going to stop this, yeah right. And a lot of the reposters are companies or account sellers. You just see streams of ads, silly reels or reposts. Also there is heaps of stolen accounts, with copy cat stolen content from the original, what is Instagram doing about this. Seems nothing. As Instagram has "grown up" under FB it has become the wild west.

Instagram is owned by facebook so none of us should be surprised that it’s not a good way to earn money. Great to see you here Niklas. You're latest FPV competition vid was 💯 Agree with you about IG not giving any incentive for creators to market their content cross platform.
👏👏👏👏👏👏 Even as a shareholder of Facebook, I want them to do what you're saying because it would benefit them more and in turn giving me a better return both as a creator and shareholder.
This is actually a big opportunity for somebody with vision and the know how and to come up with a decent sharing platform for artists - it was only a matter of time before we all got screwed over by you know who - enough is enough. I really hope better days are on the horizon for all of us.
The only thing that keeps me on Instagram in the fact that there aren't any other nice photo centred apps. I'm a stills photographer and rarely shoot video.
I've been saying (to my wife and literally nobody else lol) that Instagram is dead since about 2015. Turns out in 2016 they came out with stories and sort of saved themselves because Stories are actually pretty fun. But moving away from photo content almost entirely is the nail in the coffin. I personally pop on and dabble in the "for you" page for about 2 minutes because guess what there are no ads and then I watch a half dozen stories and then PEACE out the first or second ad. It's just too much. Of course IG will always be a beast just like FB but no more growth.
Trying to grow reach on Instagram is like growing a tree where mother earth keeps chopping off parts of the foundation every time the tree grows a little
im an artist on instagram and lately i have noticed that the exposure of my art really has shifted negatively. it drove me pretty mad, now i get why. it really kills motivation, i pretty much relied on that app.
Just checked my IG and realized I'm now posting only once a month as a way of saying "hey I'm still alive" but have lost all excitement to when it comes of creating and sharing on the platform... 200% agree with your rant
This was 100% spot on 🙌🏻. I could honestly live without any sort of monetization if they would at least show our content...to our own followers! Engagement has completely tanked over the last few years to where posting anything other than stories doesn't even make sense anymore.
Exactly. If it just removed all of the noise and returned it to being a nice simple photo app with a chronological feed that would be enough for me. No reels, no igtv, no stories, no recommended, no ads, no explore page and most importantly no algorithm.
I feel the same way. 100% agree on this. There's an idea: You should post this video on IGTV - so we - the content creators have the opportunity to make it viral overthere. Instagram needs a cold shower.
I agree! IGTV sucks because there's no way to search a video as you would do on RUclips. It's impossible to build an archive and hence it's a useless tool. No wonder why nobody uses it and then they incentivize their use. IG and FB in general is ran by a bunch of people without creativity at all. No wonder why they can't understand true creators.
I feel instagram is more a place for "show off" and youtube a place to give quality entertainment and value, that's why I also switched back my attention to RUclips..
Truth speaked out in this video..everyone should watch this. Instagram makes its algo so complex . Half of photographer / astists stop posting on insta and closing their acc. And others are struggling in making reels which is not their true art form..really sad to see this..
8:43 I laughed so hard, cause it's so true. Good video dude. Support you 100% on this. I might just be a small unknown "creator", but I'm definitely not growing much on instagram the way it is now.
Hey Chris, while I completely agree with your points, what's the alternative? There isn't really one when it comes to photography. There is no "real" competitor to Instagram. We're using it because that's the only platform that is relevant. Most other apps that try to make a dent don't even come close.
Great talk, Chris! Awesome seeing both sides of the argument. Pumped to see you thriving here on YT where Storyblocks and others support you. Keep it up!
For me, using Instagram, both as a consumer and a creator, has been completely unsatisfying ever since they stopped putting posts in chronological order. Which was in 2016. And it has only gotten worse since then. Obviously making the switch from chronological order benefitted Instagram by keeping users online longer, endlessly (and pointlessly) searching for posts from the creators they actually follow, but I think it came at the HUGE cost of breaking apart communities. Because even if you only follow 50 accounts, which most people follow hundreds or even thousands, who is gonna remember, "Oh, I need to check in with each of these 50 people I chose to follow." NO ONE. You don't wanna have to go in and type someone's username in order to find their posts. That SUCKS.
You forgot the expense part where there's like 5 people at the top that need to make at least 10 billion a year to live with themselves. Great video dude!
You took the words out of my mouth perfectly! Instagrams algorithm is limiting our exposure. Also safety is a huge issue. I was attacked for refusing to work with people and walking away. My images where being pilfered and I had to take heat for refusing to take photos or allow my image to be basically sold and used by data extortionist for their marketing needs. It was my right to walk away and shutdown my profile. My son was missing and a single mom head of household has to work. Amen! We should be provided for and protected otherwise there is no time for me to collaborate or produce content. I didn't even know what Instagram was. I was just someone minding my own business and doing my thing. The strings that people pull trying to get me on their side comes with a cost. Exactly why I shutdown completely. My safety is extremely important. I'll be out there lobbying and being proactive if I could afford it point blank.
Absolutely Agree with everything here. I switched my main focus from Instagram to RUclips because there's no compelling reason to keep creating for Instagram as it is right now.
Honestly, I think the reason TikTok does so well is that discovery of new content is the primary way to use the app. I open up TikTok and I get my "for you page" which is an endless stream of algorithm-filtered content. I open up Instagram and I get a feed of content filtered to just the people and tags I follow. There's no direct funnel to get people to see your content without some extra effort on their part (like following a tag). There's no reason a "for you page" needs to be limited to video content, it would most likely work just as well for photo content too, but I don't think mixing them would work well.
I’m seeing amazing artists struggling to compete with huge content farms and resharing or stolen content accounts so much now. Original content gets no views, but the same content goes viral on one of these accounts that steal content, because they keep the algorithm happy with their high quantity. Instagram SHOULD be amazing for artists. It’s SUCH a visual platform. But instead, it’s just so much work with such little reward.
There is no good photo sharing platforms. Imagine if Instagram could actually see that and improve what made them work in the first place, instead of trying to copy tik tok
I totally agree, support creators! I've been using it less because it does all feel "ad like" and fake and I don't like browsing it as much or posting as much... and video is not why!
Agreed. And now we have a bunch of people playing clowns on reels just to get views for their business which has nothing to do with the clown thing. And this is when I’m seriously considering quitting and moving on YT.
@@wasp78d it's the one with the largest audience. To compete with IG you need massive (emphasize on MASSIVE) marketing push for a large audience to build up, and for it to become mainstream. Only then the app get a chance. Look at Vero. The UI and rules are great. But no one is using it. When they pushed it, it was too buggy and wasn't picked up bc of that. It missed it's chance...
You said it: "It's like staying in a toxic relationship." I left it a long time ago. I don't like feeling abused. I rarely post and when I do, it's like, "I'll drop this here and run." I don't check to see how many likes or comments it gets. The whole platform is a waste of time better spent where there's a sense of community and value ... like here on youTube.
It’s been 2 months already since I got rid of Instagram! Artists don’t the reach they deserve unless they use reels which is like an unwanted compulsion!
Dude, you NAILED it. I post photos to Instagram daily on my personal account, a few times a week on my brand account and am LUCKY if I get 25 likes (with 400 & 750 followers). Obviously I'm not a big creator on the platform, but I am constantly asking myself after I post, "Why do I even bother?" Instagram needs to roll out some SERIOUS incentives for creators. Great vid!
BIG facts...my engagement has PLUMMETED. Don’t you think it’s interesting that Twitter hasn’t gone anywhere, not bc it’s trying to be every other hot social media but it’s doing what it knows how to do best. Instagram you already have Facebook. We don’t need another one.
Feel the same way. My engagement was took huge dip and I don’t post as often now because it doesn’t get the same engagement like before. Now I just see garage reels of “photographers” pointing at “tips” and that call content. Like the F is this lazily made content getting so much engagement. IG is trying to be every other platform except Instagram. I guess now we wait for a new photo centric app that will come and challenge IG, then IG will copy said app so that IG becomes like the old IG. That or Facebook buys out rival and kills it.
I haven’t grown on IG at all because I refuse to make those moronic reels and for a smaller account like mine, it’s the only way. When IG dies I will still have my dignity.
Yeah the Instagram algorithm is ruthlessly unfriendly. It's discouraging to make posts. The things keeping the platform alive is funny memes, ads, and good looking girls on vacation. They need to get back to making things better FOR THE CREATORS, because the creators are the Instagram users who've built up and maintain the use of the app in the first place...or we'll all start to join new apps who do things right. It would be nice to see your friend's posts on your newsfeed more often and not just the major pages
People always been corrupted by money and sad that these big platforms is getting worse for creators . I'm small creator who doesn't even make money from my work but your video have a point , hopefully Instagram will start to pay instead of just taking the best from creators like you
Amen. Stepping away from Instagram as they ruined their whole platform. Our reach is currently a fraction of it used to be. Taking away the creativity of creators. Hopefully they'll learn their lesson and don't get greedy in the future.
Thank you Chris, feels good to have creators like you stand out for all of us ! It's like "staying in a toxic relationship" ! SO well said ! Nothing to add, you said it all ! Congrats on your new milestone ;) x Simone
The crappy thing is I just started learning and using it, and I am excited I am about to hit my first 1k followers but hearing this stinks I hope they don't get rid of their base model. Facebook has gone to crap and I hate to say it but sounds like IG is following. Thanks for the opinion man, love your videos!
I think this analysis would be more damning if you looked at it from the perspective of a brand new account. Established accounts have it easy. Young accounts with fire content literally just fade into the abyss.
This right here. I have just shy of 1k followers and have been watching both my reach and engagement continue to plummet as my account continues to grow. No one is seeing my content. It’s utterly ridiculous.
This is incredibly accurate. I hate all the ads on Instagram. It used to be my favorite social media platform and I really have no interest in it anymore as a photographer.
It's so interesting I've seen ALL the things you've said happen to me and I'm under 2000 followers. HOWEVER the only thing that really keeps me there is the connection I have with other creators or companies through DM's. Seems weird but I talk to a lot of people on Instagram. I guess there are better ways to do that too haha.
This video is so on point! I only use Instagram to message my friends. I don't even post content anymore as I can't even reach the people who followed me.

I personally pop on and dabble in the "for you" page for about 2 minutes because guess what there are no ads and then I watch a half dozen stories and then PEACE out the first or second ad. It's just too much. Of course IG will always be a beast just like FB but no more growth.
Trying to grow reach on Instagram is like growing a tree where mother earth keeps chopping off parts of the foundation every time the tree grows a little
The fact that you said something good on reels came from tiktok hell yes so relatable. Them viral songs and stuff
im an artist on instagram and lately i have noticed that the exposure of my art really has shifted negatively. it drove me pretty mad, now i get why. it really kills motivation, i pretty much relied on that app.

Dang true!
Mosseri needs Twitter to share his news. That speaks volumes about how well IG works.
Just checked my IG and realized I'm now posting only once a month as a way of saying "hey I'm still alive" but have lost all excitement to when it comes of creating and sharing on the platform... 200% agree with your rant
Same here. Can't get excited when I know no one will see anything I post and my engagement drops monthly. Even a year ago the reach was 4-5x better.
Spot on, great video! 🔥 We sure hope they watch this and listen! Congrats on 500k!
Yes!!! This is a vicious cycle. Your rant is perfectly sound. 👍🏼
As a visual artist and a photographer, Instagram is the worst place to be at right now
Literally the worst
"Toxic relationship" perfectly sums it up.
Truth speaked out in this video..everyone should watch this. Instagram makes its algo so complex . Half of photographer / astists stop posting on insta and closing their acc. And others are struggling in making reels which is not their true art form..really sad to see this..
I need a love button for this video, he just said everything I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT…. THANK YOU CHRIS
Man, I’ve been feeling this for too long.
✌🏻 Instagram ✌🏻
But where can we migrate to that would get us similar exposure? I tried Twitter and just ended coming back to IG 🤦🏻♂️
@@edgarmelero7079 Yea, I was just thinking that. I am hoping that a new platform for photo sharing is created! That would be great.
I just made a VSCO account. It’s definitely a smaller platform but it’s so much more authentic and way less toxic
Agreed 100% Instagram is dying FAST!
I agree with everything you said... I'm crying.. never felt so understood in my layf 🥲
I'd like a flickr with stories and the people I follow on IG.
Twitter recently improved their photo hosting services.
Photographers have been moving to Twitter, VERO is another pretty good photo sharing app
Spot on Chris!
It starts smelling like MySpace all over again...
That SUCKS.
This is a great video Chris
100% on the mark with this, the greed of FB is going to be the downfall of instagram.
Since then, I´ll put my efforts to RUclips 100% . Makes simply more sense to me ! Thank you Chris for the great video !
All give, no take relationship…. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Paki bisaya daw
There is no good photo sharing platforms. Imagine if Instagram could actually see that and improve what made them work in the first place, instead of trying to copy tik tok
I totally agree, support creators! I've been using it less because it does all feel "ad like" and fake and I don't like browsing it as much or posting as much... and video is not why!
Agreed. And now we have a bunch of people playing clowns on reels just to get views for their business which has nothing to do with the clown thing. And this is when I’m seriously considering quitting and moving on YT.
So true, IG is just so many adverts as well, every 3rd post seems to just be a "sponsored ad"
I know, I see more ads than the posts I followed, so annoying...
Cant even watch stories now. Literally ad between EVERY story
I think that people are afraid of leaving instagram because atm theres no other mainstream photo sharing app. I mean... whats the alternative? :/
that's why we're all frustrated otherwise we'd have jumped ship a long time ago !
@@FineArtBoudoir Exactly. :V
Looking blockchain app. Appics?
@@wasp78d it's the one with the largest audience. To compete with IG you need massive (emphasize on MASSIVE) marketing push for a large audience to build up, and for it to become mainstream. Only then the app get a chance. Look at Vero. The UI and rules are great. But no one is using it. When they pushed it, it was too buggy and wasn't picked up bc of that. It missed it's chance...
@@FineArtBoudoir yeah its not going to be easy. Lets all hope for the best. we all want the same :D
SOMEONE CREATE A NEW PLATFORM PLEASE! Simple, clean with monetized options.
realest thing online atm!!! keep 100 Chris. this is good sh!t!!!
Facebook culture hates paying creators
All i want is a photo sharing app.
@@chubs2312 I miss Day Flash app. It was perfect for photographers. Sadly it shut down awhile back 😢
I haven’t grown on IG at all because I refuse to make those moronic reels and for a smaller account like mine, it’s the only way.
I'm small creator who doesn't even make money from my work but your video have a point , hopefully Instagram will start to pay instead of just taking the best from creators like you
IG is just a place for people to promote their only fans these days.
Nah that only happens when they get banned for few days from TikTok 😂
A funnel app or a dating app.
The thing is, I don’t believe that they are going to change. 😓
Amen. Stepping away from Instagram as they ruined their whole platform. Our reach is currently a fraction of it used to be. Taking away the creativity of creators. Hopefully they'll learn their lesson and don't get greedy in the future.
110% agree with everything you said!
Finally, someone calling out IG using reason, not just reacting to the situation in a "boohoo, so sad, too bad" manner. Good one, Chris!
You hit it right on the spot dude! IG is messing up big time and it’s not fun anymore to share anything on the platform!
I think this analysis would be more damning if you looked at it from the perspective of a brand new account. Established accounts have it easy. Young accounts with fire content literally just fade into the abyss.
Meeee! I’m one of those accounts in the abyss. Sucks.
This right here. I have just shy of 1k followers and have been watching both my reach and engagement continue to plummet as my account continues to grow. No one is seeing my content. It’s utterly ridiculous.

UGHHHH this video is so spot on! Instagram is the worst these days. No originality whatsoever
500k BOOM! 💢 CONGRATULATIONS 🔥🔥🔥
Instagram was easy to grow back in 2014... Now I find it's near impossible in comparison!
Like, for real impossible. So frustrating.
agree!
Instagram has lost the plot awhile back. Even before tiktok became a thing
This is incredibly accurate. I hate all the ads on Instagram. It used to be my favorite social media platform and I really have no interest in it anymore as a photographer.
Thank you for this video, Chris! Saying out loud what we're all thinking!
I'll just say, greed is a hell of a thing.
This video is so on point! I only use Instagram to message my friends. I don't even post content anymore as I can't even reach the people who followed me.
This is the reality of any FREE social media platform. What makes you think the same thing won't happen to Twitter? Never assume that any social owes you anything or that you deserve to be treated better by a free service.
