I'm really glad that you "goofed up" by not making the nose bigger & the cheekbones more prominent and added on to them later. I know I'll end up wishing I'd done things on the clay armature before the plaster, so it was good to see how it can be corrected later. Great video! I'm so excited to try... but it's raining today in Manitoba, so I will have to wait (I work outside in the yard).
I good up all the time - but no worries. You can always fix things if you don't like the way they come out. I often learn the most when I have to do something over. Have fun - as soon as it stops raining. 😀
You're a fantastic woman and artist. You've encouraged me in a way only actions can tell. You've stirred a great animal inside of me with your works of art, your acknowledgement and representation of the things that have inspired you, your videos, your words, and your willingness to both teach and learn, which I find grand. I've very glad to be creative, with no fear of the past or anxiety for the future. I hope someday you'll look upon a work of art I have shaped and it gives you a feeling you don't find very often. Thank you, I appreciate it.
I don't actually know the answer to this one - I don't normally use store-bought air-dry clay, so I don't have any around to play with. Does the package have any clues? Have you tried throwing a bit of it in some water just to see what happens?
Boring? You are too congenial& engaging! I also love your modesty &humility in both your work& how you SHARE! You WANT people to learn these projects. Some are very protective of their works of art & WON'T share how they create.I am into photography & have seen people covet techniques they used to get a special kind of effect. You have books sharing your knowledge, while others make stuff & never offer to teach others. Reminds me of petty people with SECRET RECIPES they refuse to give out-grr!
one of my favorite tutorials of ALL TIMES since youtube began! thank you home girl!!!! I have clocked at least 10,000hrs, lol! fr! YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in.
If you add a new layer to a dried layer, you need the glue. You may not need the glue to get it to stick to an armature - you should do a little test to find out.
I really enjoyed watching the "wild man" come to life, so to speak. Btw, you have beautiful hands which are almost as pleasurable to watch as the figures you create.
It looks like you are doing surgery, Dr. Jonni. It was fun watching you bring him to life.😃😃😃 Oh, it just hit me, this video reminds me of those police stories of someone who makes a model to try and identify a person from a skull. A forensic artist???? Once again you give referrals of someone who does faces. You are so good and yet humble.
It would be interesting to be a forensic artist, but I wonder how many there are, outside of TV and the movies? I don't think it would be a good job for me, though - I just keep moving clay around until I see somebody I might want to spend some time with. Not very scientific. 😄
I am so very encouraged by your channel and your sincere totally sharing manner. Thanks to your link, I have ordered the WED Modeling Clay and look forward to making your silky smooth paper mache clay.
You've sooo inspired me. I've been looking for non-fired materials that I can sculpt goblins, elves & animals from, & this is just perfect! Thankyou so much.
Very Good! I've been a professional artist for over 40 years but I really enjoyed watching you create the "Wild Man"! You talked about it not looking realistic but I like it better this way. :-) Great job... keep up the good work and... THANK YOU for sharing your talent with us.
Oh my gosh! I'm so thankful that I have found you! I'm relatively new to creating art, and I've been using polymer clay to sculpt and add it to canvas paintings. I call it sculptural mixed media, but it is heavy and very expensive to create something large with polymer clay. I will be subscribing to your blog and watching, (and probably re watching) all of your videos! I can't wait to begin using your technique with my crazy ideas!
Jossette, I would love to see how the air dry clay works with your canvas paintings. I worry that it might not stick, but you probably have that all worked out already!
Thank you for making and sharing a wonderful video of the process you use to create your sculpture. Wonderful! I'm going to see if I can create one for my garden. Have a great day!
Thanks SSJean. I think I understand why artists keep their techniques secret - they make their living selling their art, so it wouldn't help them if they helped their competitors create artwork that was similar to their own. I make my living exclusively from selling my books, so I have a big incentive for sharing. I certainly don't blame people for trying to protect their incomes - selling art is a hard business, and people need any advantage they can get. And a "secret" process certainly helps.
I think the new recipe would make a fairly heavy mask, although you might be able to use it to smooth out a mask made with the fast-setting paper mache. I'm also concerned that it might crack when the mask is flexed. I think we'll have to do more experimentation to see how it would work for w wearable mask. For a display mask (like my little Wild Man) it obviously would work just fine.
thank you for sharing and I love your 'little guy'. This IS just what I was looking for, I've tried paper mache but remember working with clay and making a mask/face at a camp one summer and just loved how it felt to make a life or to give life to what I was making. AND thank you for the tip about not washing plaster in the sink....er....as someone who blusters through on occasion that is something I might have missed. :D
I haven't had a cracking problem, but I always put the clay over a crumpled paper armature. The armature will allow the clay to shrink without cracking. A solid armature could cause problems. I also use the clay in very thin layers. I think if the layers are made too thick, they could crack. I'm not sure I can do a Zombie - it might destroy my "sweet little old lady" image.:) If you make one, be sure to post it on my blog so I can see it.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering if there is a parameter to keep in mind regarding thickness of clay applied when sculpting the face- You added more plaster to the nose & cheeks, on top of the already applied face clay, saying this was to avoid clay that is too thick as it will take forever to dry. But then I noticed you soon put a large thick wad of clay in place for the ball of the nose. So does it matter how thick of clay you add? Thanks!
If it's a small round area, it can be thicker because air has a chance to reach it from more than one side. I like to keep my layers under 1/4" and they're usually thinner than that.
How accurate that was! I am half Norwegian and yes, that is what he looks like- a troll( Norwegian or not-lol) . Something under the bridge from the story" 3 Billy Goats Gruff?:" :-) While not into trolls, I see this tute as being the groundwork for any kind of face one finds appealing.
Your masks are fantastic. Do you have any tips on making masks that are comfortable to wear, I tried the plaster mix with my high school students and they are very uncomfortabel! Thanks in advance
Hi Meredith. If you use a strip of felt around the inside edge of the mask and across any part that contacts the skin, it will be much more comfortable.
So thankful to see you here! Making sculptures was always my favourite thing to do in my art lesson. However it is expansive to learn it here in Hong kong.. I'm very greatful to know that I can actually do it at home by home ingredients through watching your video. Thanks for sharing, I will subscribe your channel and probably have a try after my exams:)
There's nothing that scares people like a clown - why is that? I will definitely keep it in mind. I may need to do more than one mask video this year. I seem to be in the Halloween mood a bit early this year.
I am so glad that I discoverd your RUclips channel, Your advinces, your tricks and so one, are just wonderful! You are a very generious person and I thank you for all that! Sorry for the writing mistakes but English is not my mother tongue! You're doing very interesting and different creations. Congratulations to you! :)
This is a great video and you taught me so much. I would love to have a copy of the Sculpta Face DVD, but I can not find it online. Do you have an idea where it can be purchased or do you have one of your own for sale?
Yes, if there isn't too much plaster stuck to it. You can dip it in water to remove any plaster residue. Or be smarter than I was, and just cover the clay with plastic wrap before putting the plaster on top. You can even re-use the WED clay if it dries out, just like any pottery clay, just by adding water and letting it soak in. You can't fire this clay, though, it's just used as a modeling clay.
Hi Sharon. My mask book does show you exactly how to make armatures (actually, in this case they're probably called positive molds) for masks. Although I use paper mache for the masks in the book, you could use plaster cloth instead, and the result would be almost exactly the same. Plaster cloth might be more expensive, though. I also wrote a book called Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay that shows how to design armatures around a cardboard pattern. I think you would like it.
Well, I don't really have a concrete plan to adhere the paper mache structure to the canvas yet. When I used polymer clay I baked the sculptures to the canvas, but I figured I would have to glue the paper mache piece to the canvas after it is completed. If you have any suggestions for the best glue to use I would love to hear them. I was thinking of using hot glue or aileen's tacky glue. I promise when I have the canvas completed I will share it on your blog, (if I can figure out how) ;-). Thank you for responding to me.
I think clowns are scary for a lot of kids, so maybe there's something instinctual about it. I hadn't heard of people being weirded out by garden gnomes - that's a new one for me. (A garden gnome mask would be kind of fun!)
Love, love , love your tutorials.....I do have a question......Does your paper mache clay recipe have any problems with cracking as it dries..?? Also, in the video you asked for suggestions for a Halloween mask...My vote is a Zombie...They are quite popular these days! Or maybe some sort of evil pumpkin....
i love this face !!!! perfect for old world santa face less the teeth and more wrinkles... wish you would do video for us...love your work...thank you, vickie maddox ,Tn.
Great idea, Vickie. I made a Santa a few years ago - he doesn't look like this guy, but I really liked him. I'll make a video as soon as I can find the old photos.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I love your creativity. I tried once the air dry clay and my sculpture cracked. How did you manage to sculpt it without cracking? Is it because you use the plaster? Can i mix the air dry clay and paper mache clay? I have another project I am planning to create. Please help. Thanks.
I do usually put the air dry clay over something else, like the plaster cloth in this project or a thin layer of the paper mache clay that is put on first and then allowed to dry. In fact, I think most people use the paper mache clay as a first layer. Give that a try and see if it helps.
I know this is an old video Jonni and it is quite wonderful! Do you know if the Austin DVD is available anymore? I couldn't find it...and not sure it would play in Australia Thx...Judi
Hi Judi. I'm afraid they took the DVD off the market, but it's a shame. That was a great video. Another one you might like is by Adam Reeder. I liked it so much I wrote a review for it on amazon.com. You can find it here: amzn.to/2FJ8eeD
"My cat not your's" Have three on mine on my lap, another one next to me and your cat meows in the video.... Sounding like it was coming from another room and didn't sound like the cat wasn't in my sight range. Your kitty just pranked a whole bunch of people over the internet :)
My kitty pranked me more than once - I would hear her while I was editing the video, and look around to see what she wanted, and she wasn't even in the room. 😺
Hello, dear lady! Hope you're doing okay. I have a question, if you don't mind. The glue paste I used to smooth and stick the clay incorporated Modge Podge, which was probably a mistake considering it's supposed to be a sealer/finish as well as a glue... It's only the second day of these details being on the sculpture but I'm really scared it's not going to dry properly and mold will flourish. Do you have any advice on this? It's humid here in MS. I'm tempted to leave him in my car for the oven effect... But I don't know.
I've never used Mod Podge, so I don't know if you'll have any problems or not. If the product is waterproof, and if it dries before the air dry clay, then there will be no air getting in to dry the clay, and it will never harden. Sooner or later the mold spores that are naturally everywhere will come alive on the inside of your piece, where the water is, and it will eventually destroy your sculpture. On the other hand, it might still work if any air can get in, and if the moisture in the clay can evaporate through it. Try the car idea - what do you have to lose?
A little disappointed. I'm Just learning it would have been nice to see the CORRECT way to do it in the beginning. You did a fantastic job! What was the original base clay you used? Also, is it necessary to do so many layers? I just thought I could sculpt the stuff I purchased, I guess not.
Oh my goodness, what an Amazing eye for art. I wish I had that kind of talent. I'm a crafter at heart, many times , selling my creations. For a decent price, I made good money. I'm benge watching you're channel tonight.
@@UltimatePaperMache THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING TO MY COMMENT, BECAUSE THERE'S ALOT OF CHANNELS THAT DONT. INTERACTING WITH SUBSCRIBERS IS GREAT FOR GROWING SUBSCRIBERS. SOMETIMES SOMEONE JUST WANT TO BE NOTICED. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEOS. TAKE CARE. GOD BLESS. DEB
Hi Jonni, I have an ain't in Texas names Johnnie...I call her AJ. You seem sweet like she is. I watched a lot of your videos a couple of years ago and now here I am back. Really want to learn how to use this product. I see you keep dipping your tool in glue water. Are we suppose to do that all the time for details? Thank you for the great lessons!
Interesting:clowns are a turn off for many but when it comes to harlequins,it all depends on how the harlequin's expression is created.Like the Italian Carnevale Masks. Many are incredible works of art- yetsome have menacing expressions. Those masks, made by hand& expensive, are becoming a lost art.Thx 2 Jonni's book on masks, those who love these traditional, elegant masks can make their own.*Jonni I would assume latest recipe for the animal dolls should be fine for a mask used OR displayed?*
It's half and half Elmer's (PVA) glue and water. I use it to make wet clay stick to dry clay, and to make my fingers wet when I want to smooth over an area so it looks more like porcelain when it dries.
Some of my blog readers are having good luck with a product called Flex Seal, but I haven't tried it. Others claim that marine varnish will work, but I did try that and it didn't work for me. I use Apoxie Sculpt for my outdoor sculptures.
I use matte acrylic varnish. I used to use the Golden brand, but now I really like the DecoArt Americana Soft Touch varnish for faces. It feels like polished soapstone, which is really nice. amzn.to/2zpkiKa
It depends on how thickly the air dry clay is applied. You should wait at least two days, though. It will feel dry on the outside before it's dry completely on the inside. You never want to paint any kind of air dry clay if there's moisture trapped inside.
Creo que sería divertido hacer una máscara Catrina. Voy a ver si puedo hacer uno pronto. Mientras tanto, iré a mi canal y ver los videos Pantalone en la lista de reproducción "máscaras hechas con el fraguado rápido Mache del papel".

Sooner or later the mold spores that are naturally everywhere will come alive on the inside of your piece, where the water is, and it will eventually destroy your sculpture. On the other hand, it might still work if any air can get in, and if the moisture in the clay can evaporate through it. Try the car idea - what do you have to lose?
witchapparatus watch out if the windows are up...it may form alot of condensation.
Just found your videos. You are an amazing artist! Plus you and I are neighbors Im in Rapid City. Thumbs up and subscribed.
Awesome! I haven't been over there in years, but I think my daughter has visited some art galleries in Rapid City. I don't know which ones, though.
A little disappointed. I'm Just learning it would have been nice to see the CORRECT way to do it in the beginning. You did a fantastic job! What was the original base clay you used? Also, is it necessary to do so many layers? I just thought I could sculpt the stuff I purchased, I guess not.
+Judi Calhoun You might be able to sculpt with the product you have on hand. what is it?
wonderful work jonni :)
Oh my goodness, what an Amazing eye for art. I wish I had that kind of talent. I'm a crafter at heart, many times , selling my creations. For a decent price, I made good money. I'm benge watching you're channel tonight.
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. 😀
TAKE CARE. GOD BLESS. DEB
that looks like Hoggle from The Labyrinth!!!
I have it on good authority that all women named Jonni are nice. :)
Hi, could Plaster of Paris be used instead of plaster cloth?
Hi there, what is the glue and water mixture you talk about at the 11 minute part of the video?
It's half and half Elmer's (PVA) glue and water. I use it to make wet clay stick to dry clay, and to make my fingers wet when I want to smooth over an area so it looks more like porcelain when it dries.
I was afraid I would put people to sleep - I'm glad you liked the video. I agree that zombies are big - are there any "nice" ones?
Is there a way to make him waterproof so that he can be an outdoor decoration?
Some of my blog readers are having good luck with a product called Flex Seal, but I haven't tried it. Others claim that marine varnish will work, but I did try that and it didn't work for me. I use Apoxie Sculpt for my outdoor sculptures.
Hello dear ! What do you use for glazing your air dry clay creations ???
Best regards
I use matte acrylic varnish. I used to use the Golden brand, but now I really like the DecoArt Americana Soft Touch varnish for faces. It feels like polished soapstone, which is really nice. amzn.to/2zpkiKa
So if I want to use this air-dry clay over an armature, I should lay down watered-down glue first?
Great job....is fantastic..¡
thank you so much for sharing !
You're welcome. 😊
You waited till he was totally dry? How long does that take?
It depends on how thickly the air dry clay is applied. You should wait at least two days, though. It will feel dry on the outside before it's dry completely on the inside. You never want to paint any kind of air dry clay if there's moisture trapped inside.
thank you so much for this video its very useful and u re really perfect thank u :)
wow u are a genius to use that garlic press
I think I saw somebody doing it with real clay, so it wasn't my idea - but I remembered it, so I guess I can get credit for that. :)
hello how you are using paste for modeling and decision thank you as I am Belgian and I love your video
R u using just plain water or any adhesive ? Thanx for the upload
I do mix some PVA glue with water and brush it onto the edges of the air dry clay to get them to stick together. Is that what you were asking?
Yes I exactly wanted to know about this. Thank you so much for the reply. Really appreciate.

I love it ❤❤❤😊

Thank you. 😊
Did you also tint the clay?
Gosh, I can't remember - but that is a really good idea.
Could you use Plastilina instead of WED clay.
+Judi Calhoun Sure, that would work just fine.

+Judi Calhoun I buy mine from amazon.com, since my local pottery store doesn't carry it.
