    I'm really glad that you "goofed up" by not making the nose bigger & the cheekbones more prominent and added on to them later. I know I'll end up wishing I'd done things on the clay armature before the plaster, so it was good to see how it can be corrected later. Great video! I'm so excited to try... but it's raining today in Manitoba, so I will have to wait (I work outside in the yard).

      I good up all the time - but no worries. You can always fix things if you don't like the way they come out. I often learn the most when I have to do something over. Have fun - as soon as it stops raining. 😀

    You're a fantastic woman and artist. You've encouraged me in a way only actions can tell. You've stirred a great animal inside of me with your works of art, your acknowledgement and representation of the things that have inspired you, your videos, your words, and your willingness to both teach and learn, which I find grand. I've very glad to be creative, with no fear of the past or anxiety for the future. I hope someday you'll look upon a work of art I have shaped and it gives you a feeling you don't find very often. Thank you, I appreciate it.

    I don't actually know the answer to this one - I don't normally use store-bought air-dry clay, so I don't have any around to play with. Does the package have any clues? Have you tried throwing a bit of it in some water just to see what happens?

    Boring? You are too congenial& engaging! I also love your modesty &humility in both your work& how you SHARE! You WANT people to learn these projects. Some are very protective of their works of art & WON'T share how they create.I am into photography & have seen people covet techniques they used to get a special kind of effect. You have books sharing your knowledge, while others make stuff & never offer to teach others. Reminds me of petty people with SECRET RECIPES they refuse to give out-grr!

    If you add a new layer to a dried layer, you need the glue. You may not need the glue to get it to stick to an armature - you should do a little test to find out.

    It looks like you are doing surgery, Dr. Jonni. It was fun watching you bring him to life.😃😃😃 Oh, it just hit me, this video reminds me of those police stories of someone who makes a model to try and identify a person from a skull. A forensic artist???? Once again you give referrals of someone who does faces. You are so good and yet humble.

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  3 года назад +1

      It would be interesting to be a forensic artist, but I wonder how many there are, outside of TV and the movies? I don't think it would be a good job for me, though - I just keep moving clay around until I see somebody I might want to spend some time with. Not very scientific. 😄

    Oh my gosh! I'm so thankful that I have found you! I'm relatively new to creating art, and I've been using polymer clay to sculpt and add it to canvas paintings. I call it sculptural mixed media, but it is heavy and very expensive to create something large with polymer clay. Thanks SSJean. I think I understand why artists keep their techniques secret - they make their living selling their art, so it wouldn't help them if they helped their competitors create artwork that was similar to their own. I make my living exclusively from selling my books, so I have a big incentive for sharing. I certainly don't blame people for trying to protect their incomes - selling art is a hard business, and people need any advantage they can get. And a "secret" process certainly helps.

    I think the new recipe would make a fairly heavy mask, although you might be able to use it to smooth out a mask made with the fast-setting paper mache. I'm also concerned that it might crack when the mask is flexed. I think we'll have to do more experimentation to see how it would work for w wearable mask. For a display mask (like my little Wild Man) it obviously would work just fine.

    thank you for sharing and I love your 'little guy'. This IS just what I was looking for, I've tried paper mache but remember working with clay and making a mask/face at a camp one summer and just loved how it felt to make a life or to give life to what I was making. AND thank you for the tip about not washing plaster in the sink....er....as someone who blusters through on occasion that is something I might have missed. :D

  • @UltimatePaperMache
    @UltimatePaperMache  11 лет назад +2

    I haven't had a cracking problem, but I always put the clay over a crumpled paper armature. The armature will allow the clay to shrink without cracking. A solid armature could cause problems. I also use the clay in very thin layers. I think if the layers are made too thick, they could crack.
    I'm not sure I can do a Zombie - it might destroy my "sweet little old lady" image.:) If you make one, be sure to post it on my blog so I can see it.

    Thanks for the video. I was wondering if there is a parameter to keep in mind regarding thickness of clay applied when sculpting the face- You added more plaster to the nose & cheeks, on top of the already applied face clay, saying this was to avoid clay that is too thick as it will take forever to dry. But then I noticed you soon put a large thick wad of clay in place for the ball of the nose. So does it matter how thick of clay you add? Thanks!

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  2 года назад +2

      If it's a small round area, it can be thicker because air has a chance to reach it from more than one side. I like to keep my layers under 1/4" and they're usually thinner than that.

  • @UltimatePaperMache
    @UltimatePaperMache  11 лет назад +1

    Yes, if there isn't too much plaster stuck to it. You can dip it in water to remove any plaster residue. Or be smarter than I was, and just cover the clay with plastic wrap before putting the plaster on top. You can even re-use the WED clay if it dries out, just like any pottery clay, just by adding water and letting it soak in. You can't fire this clay, though, it's just used as a modeling clay.

  • @UltimatePaperMache
    @UltimatePaperMache  11 лет назад +2

    Hi Sharon. My mask book does show you exactly how to make armatures (actually, in this case they're probably called positive molds) for masks. Although I use paper mache for the masks in the book, you could use plaster cloth instead, and the result would be almost exactly the same. Plaster cloth might be more expensive, though. I also wrote a book called Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay that shows how to design armatures around a cardboard pattern. I think you would like it.

  • @jossetteholland2202
    @jossetteholland2202 10 лет назад +1

    Well, I don't really have a concrete plan to adhere the paper mache structure to the canvas yet. When I used polymer clay I baked the sculptures to the canvas, but I figured I would have to glue the paper mache piece to the canvas after it is completed. If you have any suggestions for the best glue to use I would love to hear them. I was thinking of using hot glue or aileen's tacky glue. I promise when I have the canvas completed I will share it on your blog, (if I can figure out how) ;-). Thank you for responding to me.

    • @UltimatePaperMache

      I do usually put the air dry clay over something else, like the plaster cloth in this project or a thin layer of the paper mache clay that is put on first and then allowed to dry. In fact, I think most people use the paper mache clay as a first layer. Give that a try and see if it helps.

    Hello, dear lady! Hope you're doing okay. I have a question, if you don't mind. The glue paste I used to smooth and stick the clay incorporated Modge Podge, which was probably a mistake considering it's supposed to be a sealer/finish as well as a glue... It's only the second day of these details being on the sculpture but I'm really scared it's not going to dry properly and mold will flourish. Do you have any advice on this? It's humid here in MS. I'm tempted to leave him in my car for the oven effect... But I don't know.

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  8 лет назад

      I've never used Mod Podge, so I don't know if you'll have any problems or not. If the product is waterproof, and if it dries before the air dry clay, then there will be no air getting in to dry the clay, and it will never harden. Sooner or later the mold spores that are naturally everywhere will come alive on the inside of your piece, where the water is, and it will eventually destroy your sculpture. On the other hand, it might still work if any air can get in, and if the moisture in the clay can evaporate through it. Try the car idea - what do you have to lose?

    So if I want to use this air-dry clay over an armature, I should lay down watered-down glue first?

    You waited till he was totally dry? How long does that take?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  3 года назад

      It depends on how thickly the air dry clay is applied. You should wait at least two days, though. It will feel dry on the outside before it's dry completely on the inside. You never want to paint any kind of air dry clay if there's moisture trapped inside.

      I think I saw somebody doing it with real clay, so it wasn't my idea - but I remembered it, so I guess I can get credit for that. :)

      I do mix some PVA glue with water and brush it onto the edges of the air dry clay to get them to stick together. Is that what you were asking?

    Creo que sería divertido hacer una máscara Catrina. Voy a ver si puedo hacer uno pronto. Mientras tanto, iré a mi canal y ver los videos Pantalone en la lista de reproducción "máscaras hechas con el fraguado rápido Mache del papel".
