The fact that this person uses custom made tools from start to finish, and retains a decent level of precision for their final product is very impressive 👏 well done.
I mean it's simple enough...the design isn't complicated...anyone paying attention can replicate it. The question is then about skill and patience. I think we'll lose most people there....then the remaining will ask..."how long is this gonna take? oh no...my time is much too valuable for that."
BTW, if you want to be even more serious about a borderline professional drum sander, you can/should check out Stumpy Nubs' drum sander plans (they're on version 2, 5y old). It is bigger/bulkier, but uses standard belts to make the sanding drum, has the drums fully interchangeable, and has two different feed mechanisms, top and bottom (depending on the kind of sanding you seek to do).
I had to stop the video at the point where you used both a drill and a router to dimension the timber into a perfectly round dowel. I'm a carpenter staircase builder with over 40 years of experience. I'm very used to thinking out of the box, you Sir, are a genius. I am so glad that I chose your video over others. I'm 61 and still have a lot to learn. Thank you for this most educational and useful video.
Looks like A/A or A/B furniture grade Birch plywood. We get a LOT of that around here in Finland plus the lower grades B/BB, B/WG and BB/WG. Talk to your merchants.
Nice! An improvement you can add is joining the two “Z axis” with a belt for having exactly the same high on each side of your tool. Like some 3D printers Z axis improvement.
I enjoy your videos. My uncle who passed away recently, made all of his tools in his basement. I was crushed the day I saw his shop and thought how he built his own table saw, drill press, thickness sander and more. I miss him. He got me started in wood working.
So, I'm contemplating buying a planer. Then I think about a drum sander. I then start to put together plans in my head to build a drum sander. Then... I came across this. Excellent job! I see an easy drum sander in my future.
Really really Cool. Of course users will modify as they like but One addition: easily swaped out sanding drums - would allow different grades of paper to be used quickly. Saving on double sided tape and paper alignment hassles. Even buffing material would be useful as an option. But as shown its a very useful project.
Very nice ! Use a sanding eraser or even a worn out piece of rubber or a sneaker to clean the drum sandpaper. You'll get a LOT more use of a single application !! Thanks for a nice video.
Thank you very much for this plan! I have quite recently finished my storage shed and it's terrific! Very nice looking and firm. This is obviously better than most different ones I've seen around.
I was with you until you did that angle cut on the sandpaper roll and it fit exactly. At that point, I knew this was some kind of voodoo! Seriously, very cool. Well done!
These are some of the best DIY tools ever! This person's whole shop is based on a handful of cheap corded drills and circular saws. Lol! Meanwhile, I've spent thousands and might never be as capable...
I'm pretty amazed by your Projects and Videos in general. With this one, I'm speechless. It finally DID make sense to keep the round wooden excess/leftover parts from drilling holes with this type of drill extension. I will build this one day (this is probably the most thought thought of your audience). Good Work!
Excelente herramienta.
I like it, but i think height adjustment needs improvement. At least, after you set it up, can you attach knob on the threaded rods? So, you can be certain to turn both sides same amount. Alternatively, a little chain and sprocket at the bottom of those rods can link them, which makes adjustment more accurate. Just thinking out loud, your videos are awesome as always.
Yup! My first thought was a crank at the top of one of the threaded rods and a chain and two sprockets underneath to keep them even at all times. Still a great design though!
or you can simply add a wedge under the sloped platform with a threaded rod at the center so that the wedge pushes the platform up at an angle when you turn the threaded rod
@@BryanHancocks @Parmesh Singh how do you ensure the platform keeps stable contact with the wedge underneath while the angle changes? Steeper angle and the base of the wedge makes contact, shallower and the top of the wedge. This not only affects the height, but introduces the possibility of the platform bending under pressure as the pivot point shifts forward and back. I don't have an answer but those thoughts come to mind...
Very impressive! The only improvement I can think of is a simpler lifting mechanism for the sanding board, instead of having to adjust the height on both sides.
Thst tool is cheap? , maybe he work something especial und he need it. I know hear a man und he make Arpones, und he made his own tools, Even export it, this is very interesting because it have pouder EXTRACTOR
If you buy two identical drills and set them to run in opposite directions on both sides (because one will be facing the other way) then you could double the torque.
The great thing about building your own is you can have all your grits on their own rollers ready to go which is a major downside to regular drum sanders.

Indeed, the issue is mainly quality/precision vs. cost vs. time -- As the only joke goes, "pick two, you can have that".

That has got to be the most common sense, easiest to build and use drum sander I have seen thus far.

Unfortunately, I am in my last years, what I would have given for these great Ideas, 50 years ago. They are nothing less than brilliant.
you have got the best looking plywood i have ever seen!
Looks like A/A or A/B furniture grade Birch plywood. We get a LOT of that around here in Finland plus the lower grades B/BB, B/WG and BB/WG. Talk to your merchants.
I saw that too.
Tip: you can use one or two simple rolling Pins for the drum. Remove the handles and you got a nice hardwood drum with centerhole
I'm totally going to do that mine, genius!
Thoughtful combined with sensei-craftsman! I like the tranquility and precision!

Amazingly simple idea . Makes you feel like want to build it right now. Thanks for the detailed video. Nicely done
This is the most zen woodworking video I’ve seen. Thank you so much for your videos!
You are a master I seen a few of your items that you build, all are done with precision and a very clean and neat job.
I've never seen so many ingenious ways to use a hand drill. You are a total rock star!

Good to see expertise in action.
Congrats
What great common sense video. Thankyou
Genius, just a ton of clever ideas in one video.
Very impressive indeed. You probably should run boards through - diagonally. That way you won't deplete the sandpaper just in the middle. Nice work!
I wanna belive that the apron is just to put your pens in it, because you never get dirty , awesome skill by the way
