- Uggghhhhh I feel so nervous putting this out for the world... but it is what I did!
... so here's is the story of how I failed my attempt at art school.
Awaiting the judgement of the internet in 3...2..1...
For those who are interested, this quick and loose wave study in the background was created using my Prismacolor pencils in a Strathmore toned grey sketchbook
The small wave paintings in this video are available now over on my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/a...
I have an hour and 20-minute video ready now for my $5 patrons showing the process of creating the little wave panels at the end here / drawing-wave-25375082

I would just like to note, that all of the teachers at this particular school were extremely awesome, and allowed myself and many others the freedom to take whatever learning we could from what they had to offer.. even if it was just getting a space to paint and play, the results were never the driving force...
And I think this freedom is why so many members of my class are still artists or creatives today... I probably wouldn't have gotten away with this kind of bull-headed shenanigans anywhere else!!
Hahah my father was a bullheaded artist himself! He knew damned well where I got it from 😂
Don't worry, A special man can help you out. He's from Argentina with German descent.
Sorry for confusing German with Austrian

*Breaking News: Supreme leader Cassandra has invaded Poland*
LOL
I know someone else failed art school and it did not end well
Well he became so famous everyone relates failing in art School with him
The greatest lesson of life is learning humility. And humility is the path to greatness. You are really great. I like both your speech and the sketch. They are awesome.
Its really funny how as teens we all don't like to be told what to do and how we can grow to be the best that we can be...You sound like my daughter when she was in school...but I think just maybe I had some of that in me because I missed out on so much as a young adult...and thus comes...'why didn't I listen?" I failed with school too, but also wanted to do many things, but never got to do what I truly wanted. Well put Cassandra! You are now doing a beautiful thing! You have helped many of us, your art is YOU! HUGS! HAGW!
They say, "Youth is wasted on the young."!
I wish I knew now, HALF of what I thought I knew when I was 16!!!
How open and honest, your art work is amazing and I enjoy everything you present
Wow interesting story Cassandra! You are such a wonderful Artist and I love how humble you are about your journey to where you are today. I also love this sketch you did - beautiful! Tfs Hugs, Ginny :0)
As a fellow Aussie your colloquial language made me laugh!!!! Great story Cassandra! Don't know that at 18yo or so I'd have done better. I went to art school as my mid-life crisis 'gift' to myself and loved all of it. Maybe having some measure of maturity in life makes it easier and more satisfying to receive the knowledge and gift of learning that our art tutors offer us. Thanks for the videos, the 'waves' pictures are just lovely!!
Wow Cassandra, you’re story and art journey sounds quite similiar to mine. Thank you so much for this and your honesty. I am my own worst critic plus I won’t showcase my work unless it’s perfect, I gotta kinda lose that attitude even now at almost 38. From one Aussie to another keep being you and creating awesome art and videos!

@@take0ne ok bro.
This is now my favourite video of yours. I love this channel particularly for your self-awareness and reflection and it was great to hear the journey you took to be where you are today. The drawing is fantastic as well.
Amazing video, I would love to see a video of the portfolio that got you into college! I think a lot of people would like to see that. Anyways keep up the great art!
I don't necessarily paint or draw but I am very into mixed media and this story is everything because I find myself telling the very same storyof when all of the knowledge was right in front of me and I didn't realize what I had until ten years later
You should crave failure. It’s the only thing that in this world that lets you profess and learn. Never be insecure about sharing your story. Your a beautiful artist and have s great art channel. It’s great to see that everyone has struggles like everyone else. Thank you for sharing! I love all your videos
Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ so inspirational!!
Thanks for sharing. I would love to have had that opportunity. But, none of us can say what we would have done during our crazy teen years when we really had little idea what life was all about
20 years ago I had the opportunity to take good criticism from a well known pastel artist in Nova Scotia and instead of learning from it, I decided he was an arsehole and I just sucked, and I put everything down. In between then and now, I worked as a makeup artist and nail artist, and learned so much about colour theory, pigment mixing, light and shadow, etc. I picked up my pastels again a few months ago after watching artists on RUclips. I am much more willing to take criticism now, and I look forward to every day as a chance to get better. I loved your story, thank you for sharing!!
Now go to Germany
You should probably just go into politics instead
Maybe
Yes, and start a fascist government
great video, and thoroughly enjoyed your "storytime"
Dont become a dictator

Hi Cassandra, Just came across your channel whilst trying to motivate myself to begin a new piece. I also studied art at TAFE, I completed the cert 4 in Advertising and Graphic Design here in Adelaide. One of our subjects was illustration and it was probably the subject I disliked the most but in recent years ( and since discovering You Tube ) I am really enjoying my drawing with coloured pencils. Keep up the good work and Ill now watch the rest of your videos :)
I didn’t get to go to TAFE and take art classes until after raising my family and retiring from teaching jnr primary children. I loved every minute. I had matured before undertaking the course but I did come across many a school leaver with attitude. I just wanted to shake them and tell them what an opportunity they were being presented with.
Oh no... *NOT THIS AGA-*
Get in the Panzer! We got something to do.

Now the world shall know pain
I thought this was going to mirror my own experience of art school, but it was actually me who wanted to learn and the tutors who had their head up their ass. 😂
I didn't touch a paintbrush for 10 years after I graduated but I'm loving my art now and learning faster than I did in 3 years at university!
Just don't get fascist views. Just stay away from politics. Just stay away from Poland
Uh oh
Women failing art school:
Men failing art school:I like politics
its ok if you fail just paint the whole europe with indian peace symbol with white and red in background
Even better when you start drawing new border lines across Europe
My daughter wants to go to art school, and I've been trying to caution her that it's not what she thinks it is. It's hard work, frequently on subjects you may have no interest in, and then someone will come in and tear that hard work a new bung hole, and you have to suck it up and get right back to more hard work. There's fun to be had, but it is not, "YEEHAW I GET TO SIT AROUND AND DRAW WHATEVER I WANT ALL DAY AND GET PRAISED!" time.
it's a very hard discussion. my main consideration would be money... back in the 90's this course cost me $180... that's IT!! ( yay for Australian subsidised education) I have a world of experience and a failing grade for $180!! really I think that was a pretty good deal overall... but if you are looking at being thousands of dollars in debt for something that you are not deeply passionate about and are not really looking for work in galleries or museums... then the school of youtube/ internet/ hard work is actually more than enough.
tell your daughter to keep drawing, keep learning and playing with supplies and encourage her to never ever stop...if she loves it that much, a piece of paper will ultimately mean very little...constant practice means more than a paper from a school
Please, don’t invade Poland!!! 🇵🇱
Uh oh

Very interesting narrative, and not only did l want to hear the end, but l needed to see the completed piece, which is amazing. What kind of solvent are you using?
OH NO NONONONONONO NO STOP NO DONT INVADE POLAND STOP NO!!!!
I joined a lvl 1 art class so I could learn the basics
I've run in to an odd problem my teacher has insinuated that my work isn't my own and has asked me to document making my pieces noone else has to do it there is only 1 module left but it's really taken the ommph out of my enjoyment
I think you could take this a couple of different ways: your style just happens to be similar to another artist's work, and it might be that you're more advanced than the other students; or the instructor suspects that you're copying instead of creating your own work because of the similarity, and maybe you have seen that work before and are inadvertently copying. If it's totally coincidental, then it shouldn't be a problem to show your process, i.e. thumbnails and preliminary sketches that include blocking and composition, or reference photos you took. Honestly, every student in a basic should have to complete and show all those process items, otherwise you're not learning much. Take this as a challenge, or a learning experience. As Cassandra said in the video, don't let your ego get between you and your learning. It's okay to try another class if this isn't working for you, too, but do it to learn more, not to avoid learning more about the process and about yourself and your style.
@@everartokelli thank you I have been documenting since I don't think I have been copying I've really been trying to do different styles and use lots of mediums as we are sopposed to show variety but pretty much everything had been drawn before so I guess it could look like other peoples work
I too think you should take it as a compliment. The teacher obviously is having a hard time believing that work that is that good could come from a student. I realize it's kind of a back handed compliment but take it anyway. Besides, proving the teacher wrong in this case will be very satisfying.
How to Become a German Leader
After 20 years she will
Thank You!
What's your opinion on invading Poland?
I had to laugh when you were talking about your attitude at that time. I also started drawing at a young age and loved to sketch. I even had an art teacher in high school ask me to sign up for one of the classes after seeing me sketching in front of my locker during lunch periods. Did I take them up on the offer??? Heck NO!! I wasn't going to take an art class and paint a stupid pear or vase of flowers that I wasn't interested in just because the teacher told me to!! I wasn't letting some teacher tell me that some of my techniques are wrong etc!!! I wanted to draw what I liked and that was it!!! I had no understanding that it isn't the subject matter that counted in these art classes, it was the methods and techniques that mattered. I knew NOTHING about colour theory and just thought I could buy some prismacolor premiere pencils and they would work like magic!! Needless to say that although I could sketch fairly well in graphite (as long as it wasn't people) I had NO idea how to work colour and gave up on all of it for quite some time. It was only a couple of years ago that I started back into art firstly after buying an adult colouring book of mandalas. So now I have been watching youtube videos etc to learn the things I COULD have been taught in school if I didn't have such a hard head!!! You are not alone!!!
Hello fellow Aussie. If I may ask, what are you using to blend? Enjoyed your perspective.
