Thanks for putting so much time into this video!! Most people just put up a bunch of swatches and call it a day, and swatches don't really show us how a pencil is going to layer and blend in a real situation. Oh and also to answer your video question, when I first got into art, I went straight to prismacolor. And it blew my mind! I was automatically expecting more of a crayola-ey experience, but it was like colouring with eyeliner pencils. Totally mind-blown. And then soon after I wanted luminance and then polychromos, but nothing has ever matched prismacolor for me, with how beautifully the colour goes down on the paper, and how easy it is to blend and layer.
Colouring with an eyeliner pencil!! That is a wonderful description of what it’s like working with the prismacolors!!! I agree that nothing else quite gets that super creamy blending experience quite like the prismas
crayola were my mainstay as a teenage artist. I have so much nostalgia for them! I definitely remember fighting that awful chalkiness to them though. Never felt like I could get my colours bold enough.
I just watched this and had put myself on an art supply budget. I love the look of Polychromos...but my budget says...no no no. Although I have a few (from art studies that required me to buy the single pencils) the full tin is just not an option. I love how you framed this. I do have Prismacolors but not the full. Thank you for explaining that it is ok to start with what I have. I can always spend the $$$ later after I get a bit better. Love your videos! Thanks for being that artist that explains all of the options and shows the comparison 😁👍
Great review! I'm only fairly new to colour pencils (I still work mostly in graphite) but started off with the mont marte pencils a while ago. I still use them to practice with and only treated myself to some polychromos just recently. I love them and plan to build up my collection over time.
Oh I definitely understand that! Honestly I only used graphite and charcoal until about 4 years ago when I finally branched into colour... I think there is definitely an advantage to working in mono tones, and learning about value and shading first before trying a tackle full colour
I'm using the FaberCastell Classic for now and maybe they are not the best but i like how soft and easy are to work with. I do plan to get polychromos in future when i have enough money. Thank you for the lovely review 😄
I used those ultra cheap pencils when starting cause I had them at home. I already changed them, but got to say that they gave quite a pastel effect...
I liked your video! I have Crayola, Prisma, FaberCastell, Goldfaber, and Faber Classic and I like them all for different things. Particularly if I get a coloring book that doesn’t have that great of paper, I have found that Crayola and my Polys lays down better than Prismas. I really think paper makes a huge difference!
One cheaper alternative which is an artist grade colored pencil is the koh-i-noor polycolors. They work very well, are a wax based pencil and their lightfast ratings are not too bad. Of the set of 72, 19 are rated 2stars or below which frankly is a better ratio than prismacolor!! The price is very affordable as well. Another good choice is the Lyra Rembrant Polycolor. They are an oil based pencil and are also lightfast at a more reasonable cost for those just starting out. I have both the Faber Castell Polychromos and the Prismacolor premier full sets but you can never have too many pencils...LOL!! I would recommend both the Koh-i-noor and the Lyra to anyone who is wanting to try using colored pencils as a fine art medium. FYI both the Koh-i-noor and the Lyra also have a full range of watercolor pencils. I don't have the Lyra watercolor but the koh-i-noor match colors perfectly with the regular colored pencils so using them in mixed media applications is super easy and a lot of fun.
I haven’t had a chance to use those, but I certainly have heard many people using them! There are so many brands I could never test them all, so thank you very much for sharing :)
Do the student grade pencils have enough pigment to work with the OMS? I’ve tried with Crayola and some other cheaper pencils, but nothing seems to happen. The effect is nowhere near what I get with my Prismacolor, Polychromos, and Luminance. P.S. I loved the piano example, I played on a small keyboard for a long time before it became to small and I was running out of keys. Thanks for explaining this topic so well!
They do... But of course there is a lot less pigment it takes a lot more effort and layer building to get the cheaper pencils to blend, but it certainly can work with patience, even with the crayolas. ... I must say he Prismacolor scholars and the Mont Marte pencils that I used in this demonstration responded beautifully to the thinners ( Much better than I expected!) but each brand of pencil is different and takes more or less effort to blend out in this manner, and it takes experimentation to get results
Just found your channel. Thanks for the great information. What material did you use to blend the Crayolas? Was it the same material for each tested pencil?
Great video, I don't know if I'd have the patience to do this especially with the children and student pencils, however you got great results. Have you tried Caran D'ache Pablo colored pencils? They're amazing, I like them a little better than polychromos.
good one Cassandra....... I also started out with the cheapie but was frustrated that I couldn't get the zing I wanted...... I bought a about half a dozen prisma colours and some solvent........wow.... I felt like I had hit the jackpot..... The paper choice is also a big player... I have found that the paper in most colouring books is awful......what paper do you like to use?
Just subscribed and so excited to have found your channel. Absolutely smitten with your work. Have a question about blending though. Couldn't get the mineral spirits so tried baby oil (very sparsely & carefully) ... "seems" to work but any thoughts? Thanks so much for such an incredibly in-depth comparison (started with student grade and got hooked as a youngster). Just getting back into it after decades ... older than this picture is! Hoping it's "never to too late" to still learn. Now have Polychromos (some).
Baby oil will work to blend your pencils. unfortunately unlike odourless mineral spirits or alcohol it will not evaporate from the paper. At best this can leave an oily stain on your paper... at worst it will eat up the paper over time. :(
When I started work with colour I actually did not like it that much because I was so happy doing graphite pencil work but then my sister told me seen a man doing beautiful landscape scenes with coloured pencil and I gave it a go. I did not know too much about paper, solvents, blenders, etc and I remember using prisma colour pencils!! I loved the results and I will suggest to start up with them because the price range are very affordable ;) ps. I still have that old set ,well, what is left of them.... lol
I use Prismacolor premier and some Derwent watercolor pencils. Can't find certain colors like, cobalt blue in Prismacolor. Also hard to find, raw sienna. Can't show art on here? Anyway, thanks for the video.
I am not sure, I like to use arches hot press watercolour paper when working in this manner, but considering these were not full scale drawings I may have used fabriano academia paper, which has a similar texture, but is much cheaper
Thanks for the video. I started with faber castell...student grade pencils...and i am pretty satisfied with the results ...but i nothing else to compare with as well. It just makes me feel proud of myself that i can create art with what i have at the moment. Can you please suggest a blending medium?
I started with crayons. Graduated to twistables. My job is closed up due to the quarantine virus, so I bought a better quality coloring book and a small set of prismacolors. Discovered wax pencils are not my thing. my daughter sent me a large set of polychromos which I got yesterday. Love love love oil pencils. Pulling out Daydreams and my poly colored pencils right now. I firmly believe you're only as good as your tools.
I wondered also Cassandra if you were aware of the Derwent Lightfast pencil set that are coming out. Apparently 100% lightfast. Only 36 set at the moment as those colours apparently have been tested to be completely lightfast. I have the Derwent artists pencils and Mont Marte that were gifted to me and I can relate to being dead flat broke at the moment after having some major setbacks but hopefully things are turning a corner. Thank you for making me feel that I’m not crap for not having the premier Artist high end brands yet, and knowing that I could still get some lovely results. I am not going to sell my works with these unless prints due to lightfastness and their seem to be more demand and prestige for work with the high end brands.
aaahhh yes! I am kind of looking forward to having a play with them... I do have a 12 pack of the Derwent Procolours and they are very nice to use, I'm really hoping these lightfast ones give a similar performance! Many artists recommend the super high end pencils, and they really are awesome compared to the rest. But you have to start somewhere, and I hate to think there are some potentially very talented artist out there who feel like they need to spend a fortune to start playing and learning! The reality is that it's not very likely that those first pieces will be good enough to sell anyway, and when you do finally start making something you want to share, selling them as prints really does help bridge the gap!
Cassandra Hanley thanks so much for your response. I have quite a few pieces I have done and I’m just trying to get my techniques down, I’m hoping to splurge with some of my tax return soon and get some of the best ones that I have been wanting for ages. I love your work and videos.
Ahhhh things aren't so great in the garden at the moment... they did indeed germinate!! but I had a bit of a giant grasshopper invasion, and things did not end well.. for anything!! The bastards managed to get into the green house and the Poor little guys didn't stand a chance ☹️ they seem to have moved on now, so I suppose I'll try again... I'll just have to wait for hubby to prune another one at fruiting time!
They work similarly, the Crayola ones come in more colors tho. You can get a 100 set of those, while Faber Castell only gets up to 60. Both are pretty decent though. 👍🏻
Hi I don't know why but I just like talking to you and sharing thing's. Very true to your story exactly same here . Over here where I stay right now ( actually on rental basis so we just keep on moving) there isn't any good stationery store . There are local stores but only 2-3 local brands are easily available everywhere and unfortunately they are not up to the mark. So I need to buy things online on amazon.in and online there are so many products that I get confused about what to buy. Yes currently I am working or practicing with those cheap products only same which I used as a student in school approximately 30 years back now recently I have again started drawing after so many years , English is not my first language so I may be wrong somewhere. But the sad thing is I need to put pressure to get darker results which I personally don't like much ( putting pressure). Ok I have 2 questions , after watching this video I liked the scholar much than other student grades so as a beginner should I buy scholar or polychromos single or 12 set what do you suggest and another question is about do we really need those minerals for blending if yes which to buy as I can't afford costly things for my hobby. Please reply.
I am sorry Ragini, but your comment seems to have been lost for a while. In your situation I would advise you just to use what you have available... you can learn and you can create with less than artist quality" materials, but it can be frustrating when you know better supplies are available. Here in Australia, it can be pretty tricky ( or just plain expensive) to get the brands that are readily available to the rest of the world... It seems like many of my viewers on the Indian subcontinent face even more struggles in obtaining supplies... I really do understand the struggle!!! to answer your questions 1. I actually really liked using the scholars and found them to be pretty fun to work with, and they only had slightly less colour saturation than the prismacolors.. but considering the price difference in my country, I would just go out and get the 12 pack of prismacolor premieres... I have a video about making 100's of colours from just 12 pencils here: ruclips.net/video/TAhmJZnLYHg/видео.html a 12 pack is a perfectly reasonable place to start! 2. you absolutely do not need the odourless mineral spirit.. it just makes things easier for my techniques... If you want to use your colour pencils without thinners I do recommend using a slightly smoother paper.. it will just make blending easier on your hands! I did have a look on amazon.in and found a bottle of Sennelier OMS for a pretty decent price here: www.amazon.in/Sennelier-Odour-Free-Mineral-Spirits/dp/B079DTX912/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1547810311&sr=8-2&keywords=odorless+mineral+spirit yes it is a small bottle, but this stuff goes an incredibly long way in colour pencil work as you only use the tiniest amount at a time sorry to take so long to reply... I hope this helps :)

Prismacolor premier.. not expensive.. decent pencil.. not the best but good for the price for me... the best is very expensive.. Cheap pencils you go thru faster due to not as much pigment and they crumble and break.. especially when I use my electric pencil sharpener. Most people talk about paper.. I have found Wood covered with Gesso.. works GREAT.. when I sketch I use paper... but when I color.. I use cheap wood plywood that you can buy on ebay.. already cuts and sanded and ready for use.. People use this stuff for wood burning.. I buy it.. put acrylic gesso on it and get some great tooth for coloring and blending.
You had me at " are they filled with gold dust and unicorn magic? " lol

oh! I will highly recommend to start with graphite to understand the clear/dark theory once you get that the transition is so much easier, believe me!
