oh my gosh everyone needs to watch this video. i've been natural for 5 years, i have two years (12.5 inches) of length at most, and all this time i have not been using protein treatments...consciously. The last time i put protein in my hair was probably two years ago because a homemade conditioner called for an egg. Now half of my hair is extensively damaged and the strands are split all up and down it. I'm 99% sure it's because of the lack of protein, because i've been a moisturizing maniac.
I love that you are on RUclips now,Audrey, i have read your book over and over again, Your book taught me so much, so much that i could understand what the lovely ladies were doing on RUclips. I am a scientist, and trust science more, Thank you More videos pls
I experience dry hard breakage of hair and then soft subtle great elasticity. (At the moment it's dry and hard ) it's so hard to keep the balance but these vids are really helpful. Thank you. It's hard because there are so much vids on RUclips but not all the advice works for everyone, everyone's hair is different. Hope I can get to know my hair soon cost it's the longests it's ever been rite now jus need sme consistent regimens/products. Thank you
I really loved the simplicity of this video! So glad you're on youtube to offer a scientific understanding of natural hair. I'm really excited to check out your future post!
Very informative. I used to be very confused when it came to telling when I needed moisture/protein. I've learned to listen to my hair. I'm still working on it. I haven't mastered it yet. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your book and your amazing way of clarifying the science of black hair! am constantly talking about your book! thank you! my hair thanks you too!
I know you may never see this comment b/c your video is 5 yrs old. But while searching for a balanced sham/cond, you popped up! I watched a view of your videos and I liked them so I subscribed. I hope you're still on the tube b/c listening to you, I can tell you know what you're saying. My hair problems are so deep, that I did not want to miss a thing. But, trying to watch your demos, read what's flashing across the screen and listen to what you're saying was driving me crazy! This video i had to watch 3 times with constant rewinding! Once to watch the spaghetti thing, once to read what was going on and to listen to you and let you put it all together for me. That was a lot!! Excellent info and demo. You have definitely helped me out! But, Honey, terrible presentation. Slow up those flashing words! Us "old eyed" people need info too. Thanks. 😉
I thought I was the only one who was in that predicament, boy I had done stop reading and said the hell with, she should post it below or slow yo roll "Sista", good day y'all.😊
I know this has nothing to do with the video but audrey ur skin is flawless and healthy looking. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I have scars from old acne :(
Thank you for this informative video. The pasta illustrations are great for understanding the moisture/protein balance. I have over moisturized my hair on 2 occasions during my 4 years natural journey, and now have incorporated moisture/protein shampoos and conditiners in my regimen. I still can not find a moisture/protein leave in conditoner. BTW I do have your book. It is my hair care reference go-to book.
I loved this video I am just getting over protein overload I used your book as my go to book to get me thru. I'm still trying to find my balance because my hair still tangles easily and mats really easily if you have suggestions I'd appreciate it.
Very helpful! I have a question. Is it possible to have zero breakage when detangling? Iam type 4a/4b thick. I keep a good protein/ moisture regimen going. My hair always look like the springy pasta! But I've noticed that when I am detangling w/conditioner I sometimes see very small pieces of breakage, although minor, I do notice it? I'm pretty careful with detangling, fingers first then my proper tools to help remove all shed hair. What do you think about this? Is Zero breakage possible?
I am about to begin protein treatments bc I l have been told I moisturize too much, with too much oil and too much leave in at a time. As a result I've noticed my hair isn't growing nor is it as full anymore. Should I do protein AND hot oil treatments? If so, how often?
OMG! THANK U FOR THE BOOK. I didn't know you were on RUclips! GREAT!! Question: I take in a lot of protein because of exercising so does my hair need more protein from products?
Great information, very helpful because I'm really focused on taking care of my hair. I did the wet assessment and when I pull my hair it bounces back but I get these tiny curly hair strands in my hand and also I see them all in the sink as I am washing or rinsing my hair. So is this moisture that I need or protein? I'm not for sure if that's shedding or breakage. My hair appears to be at a terminal length so I am assuming its breakage. So protein or moisture is my question.
Audrey, I still feel like I haven't gotten the protein /moisture thing down. I'm natural and my hair is breaking like crazy and I just can't figure out why. I'll do the strength test and then try to work in more moisture . I just ordered a PH balanced leave in online, maybe that would help. Great video though.
Thanks for the video. I have finally figured out how to maintain my moisture protein balance, however I have recently experienced a lot of shedding. Is it possible that this these two things are related? And, will you be doing a video on preventing excessive shedding?
very informative. i've been struggling with this since wearing my hair without heat & look forward to more videos from you. how do you feel about the greenhouse effect naturals are using? i'm thinking about adding it to my regimen but am afraid that this will cause too much moisture. any insight is helpful. ps, i will be purchasing your book very soon.
Wow! You're on RUclips! I didn't realize you had a channel. I really enjoyed this video. Genius analogy with the noodles (as someone already said). It's so nice to see you :)
Excellent video!! Thanks my sista! I am so much better after viewing you video! We definately are STRONGER when well informed and thanks for being giving of your time and research. I feel like i can do better cause you helped me know better!! :}
Hey Audrey, I got your book and I read it from cover to cover but I'm still confused about the moisture/protein balance. Can you show a wet assesment tutorial of you actually pulling your hair while its wet so I can get an accurate and clear view of how to do it? TIA
Hello beautiful lady I have a question for you :) I have 4c 4bish natural hair I wash my hair/ deep condition it once a week my deep conditioner is greek yogurt based ...is that too much protein ?...and if so do you know of a homemade deep conditioner that I can make .....I have been doing this new mix for a month my hair feels soft and the shine is out of this world but as a more mature natural i wanted to know do you think this will cause future hair problems?
I am under my sons email but but name is Karen and normally I do not comment on videos but I do watch many on ways to care for my hair and I had to tell you this video is the best! When you did that with the noodles, ok lights came!!! Lol! Thank you so much and I will look for your videos and I will become a subscriber! And for the record i never subscribed to anyones page. I am still trying to get into learning the computer. Thanks again and God Bless!!
Niiiiiceee! Thanks for the video! And btw, you're so pretty! It's great to see the face and personality behind the book! Awesome! Keep it up! You're doing a wonderful thing for women everywhere;-)
Ooooooh i get it now!!!! I now understand the “mushy” shit everyone been talking about. The noodle thing really cleared it up lol because over cooked noodles are nasty and mushy
my hair needs alot of moisture. it is verry verry brittle ever since i used the aloe plant. i wished ive never done this but i thoughy i was helping my hair. now my hair dry and even my hair texture have somewhat changed. my hair is dye free and chemical free. i dont know what went wrong. do have any advice
today is wash day and im sitting here wet hair dripping and everything and pulled up this video just so i can figure out what deep conditioner to use :)
How do you feel about a popular hair staple Shea Moisture Black Castor Oil Leave In conditioner that contains keratin? Some ladies use it on a regular basis and I wonder how using keratin in this form weekly can effect hair.
I love your video, easy to understand with the pasta. I revamped my hair journey and trying to get a better understanding of my hair. You stress wet assessment to tell what your hair needs, I like to pre-poo with coconut oil or a oil mixture, which makes my hair soft, moist and oily when im finished. How can I assess my hairs need in that state after pre-poo?
Hi! I'm a first time viewer and I just came across your video today, which is an absolutely great video b-t-w. I have been seeking a remedy and explanation for my current hair state. After watching your tutorial, I'm hopeful I have some resolve. I thought I was balancing my hair w/moisture and protein. But, apparently, not. On a regular, when I try to run my fingers through my hair, it's a project. Like, there's zero slip! My fingers get caught up in my hair strands, no flow, it's dry and tangles terribly. I don't understand; my weekly hair wash routine entails cleansing, conditioning, deep conditioning (with heat). Then, I spritz it w/AphoGhee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer, layer it w/a leave-in, jelly/custard, styling lotion and seal it w/oil. A few days later, and my strands are dryer than I could imagine. And, sometimes it's soft, dry and mushy🙁. My hair does love water and absorbs it quickly. It's confusing to me, which one is my overload? Moisture? or Protein? Could it also be the less costlier brands I use? Please help me. Tell me what you think😓
Hey Audrey, I wanted to ask if an individual has low density and very fine hair. Do you recommend more protein treatments in addition to continuous moisture?
*My problem is that I'm not sure if my hair is balanced or contains too much moisture. It stretches and retracts, but it might also stay streched if I try to carefully push the "stretch-limit". Anyone got any suggestions? Only tested on single strands of hair.*
what would you say about my hair?? i have verrry soft hair, its wavy, fine-to normal hair i guess could say and a lil bit frizzy....but it falls out easily..??...its soft and looks nice though when i shower ( i wash my hair 3 times a week) i always get a lot of fallout and its always been that way, if i touch my hair its soft and i can play with it but i look at my hand and see hair fell out lol
Hello, I've heard that coconut oil has protein in it and daily use could cause the hair to become brittle. I have fine low porosity hair and was wondering should I stop using coconut oil? I use it all throughout my hair regimen.
So, what are some different ways to give your hair protein? All I know is protein fusions, but I don't really know what those are. Maybe that could be another video.
Please help. I moisturize my hair every morning and night. I also sleep with a plastic cap and satin bonnet but by mid day my hair feels really dry like I never moisturized it at all. I give myself a homemade protein treatment weekly then moisturize daily. What else's can I do besides perming it? Please help
Hello I'm a new subbie:) I'm noticing my hair is shedding a lot more, I have long hair coming out with the white bulb on the end. Ii just put in a joico protein treatment. Also I have relaxed hair. How can I balance my hair texture? Plus my hair is thick too. I only relax my hair every 4 to 5 months.
Where can I buy this book at and do you offer it as an Ebook? I am interested in knowing more about how to treat my natural hair. Also, can you tell me if I am protein sensitive: EVERYTIME I put ANYTHING with coconut oil in it, for example: the shea moisture coconut line, my hair feels hard as a rock! Even if I have not had any type of protein treatment for some time.. what do you think? Thanks.
THANK GOD! This is my problem too if I use anything with coconut oil in it-my hair is dry hard as a rock! I'm so glad to find someone like myself. All I hear is coconut oil is so good for your hair, NOT mine..I'm using Olive Oil..;( Need Help.
stillettopumps86 Mine too! And its rare to have 3 people saying the same thing let me tell you! People look at me like I'm crazy! Every natural vid starts or ends with oil ~LOL! I've found that my hair doesn't like Coconut, olive or grape seed oils. Long Hair Aaron explained that those oils penetrate the hair shaft, basically pushing out any moisture to get in. I already have high porosity 4B/C hair so my challenge is keeping moisture in, and using these oils will do me no favors! I had to cut 3 inches of dry hay-like hair (wiry and no curl pattern) after having used them for way longer than I should have about a year! Now I look at ingredients for EVERYTHING and if one of those (or any others, unfortunately) are in the 1st 5 or 6 ingredients I don't waste my time or $! I've found that water-based (along with aloe or honey and especially butters) BUT no oils work the best and butters (puddings, custards) are the bomb! I hope this helps! (as added info, I know I need to seal to keep moisture in so I'm trying a castor oil mix (since it is not a penetrating oil) starting with mixing jojoba oil since its the closest to our natural sebum (and to thin out the castor a bit )- but only using small amounts & focusing on the ends. And we already know Shea butter is a good sealant. Good Luck ladies! ~ Sincerely.

Hey! Yes it has helped me and thank you. Your better than me because Ive bought products where coconut oil is like 9th or 10th down the list and i STILL have hard hay hair! Its terrible! But, i have learned to know MY hair, and that is all that matters. =)
Use the aphogee to stop breakage. I had that problem the last time I permed my hair it broke my hair off and that was the last time i permed my hair. 1year natural. To be honest perms are not good for our hair. My suggestion is to stop using it and just just get your hair straighen with a heat protection on it so the heat won't break ur hair. Good Luck!!
I forgot to mention my hair is natural no chemicals whatsoever but I do wear wigs everyday and keep my hair braided underneath. I normally wash and condition once a week.
Where have you been missing out on this RUclips money and publicity Audrey? Your book is the reason half of these yt hair chicks are even on here acting like hair scientists.lol
I wish so much that you still made videos, I just stumbled upon your channel and I absolutely love it, I've learned so much. TFS😘🙌
I Love that you chose to take things a step further with videos. You have a true knack for teaching.
i did what you said in the book and WENT with moisture when i couldn't tell from the wet hair assessment.....saved my hair life!
You are so pretty and thanks so much for your book. Because of you I've learned so much about hair care.
oh my gosh everyone needs to watch this video. i've been natural for 5 years, i have two years (12.5 inches) of length at most, and all this time i have not been using protein treatments...consciously. I thought the same thing : the pasta even look like curly hair. It's brilliant ! It's a "protein/moisture balance for dummies in video", I love it !
I love that you are on RUclips now,Audrey, i have read your book over and over again, Your book taught me so much, so much that i could understand what the lovely ladies were doing on RUclips. I am a scientist, and trust science more, Thank you
More videos pls
makes so much more sense now...THANK GOD FOR YOU AUDREY!!!!!!
I admire you so much, Ms Davis.
We need to spread the truth about our hair; there are too many myths.
I experience dry hard breakage of hair and then soft subtle great elasticity. (At the moment it's dry and hard ) it's so hard to keep the balance but these vids are really helpful. Thank you.

I really loved the simplicity of this video! So glad you're on youtube to offer a scientific understanding of natural hair. I'm really excited to check out your future post!
Fantastic analogy with the pasta! You really brought a lot of clarity to the whole protein-moisture balance concept. You rock girl!!!!

Love the way you've explained this! I've just finished reading the book- but this visual demonstration totally puts in perspective. Thank You Audrey!
I really do appreciate these tips on the importance of Protein and Moisture balance.Look forward to your video updates.
I just finished reading this in your book too! Thanks for the Audio-visual! Helps a lot!
Love your book, and your hair thanx for the demonstrative video!
Love this! I'm a visual learner so when I see the pasta comparison, it all makes sense lol Thanks so much!
I just finished reading your book," The Science of Black Hair". It was great!
I loved this video I am just getting over protein overload I used your book as my go to book to get me thru. I'm still trying to find my balance because my hair still tangles easily and mats really easily if you have suggestions I'd appreciate it.
I love this comparison; I never thought of it that way. So creative!
Thank you so much sis! This was a really nice metaphor for our hair and one that I think many will understand.
Thank you! The scientific experiment with the pasta was excellent, great idea and tips
Thanks so much for the plain illustration
I've had several A-HA moments watching your videos! Thanks for sharing
Ms Science, you have gave me some common sense knowledge today. Thank you for taking the time to help us sistahs out. I subbed ya.
Great video though.
i LOVE your channel. So far, so good.
Thanks for the video. I have finally figured out how to maintain my moisture protein balance, however I have recently experienced a lot of shedding. Is it possible that this these two things are related? And, will you be doing a video on preventing excessive shedding?
Thank you so much for doing this video!
I loved your book Audrey! Thanks for the videos, I subscribed :)
very informative. i've been struggling with this since wearing my hair without heat & look forward to more videos from you. how do you feel about the greenhouse effect naturals are using? i'm thinking about adding it to my regimen but am afraid that this will cause too much moisture. any insight is helpful. ps, i will be purchasing your book very soon.
Wow! You're on RUclips! I didn't realize you had a channel.

These videos are great! I a visual learner so I totally get what to do now! Thanks!
I love your book. Thanks for sharing so much helpful information i have learned so much!
Thanks so much for thisvideo. It really helped me alot understanding my own hair.
so is there a certain ratio of deep conditioners and protein treatments? are there homemade protein treatments or is it better to use a store bought
I can not wait for you to upload more videos!!!!
Awesome video! Thank you.
Excellent video!! Thanks my sista! I am so much better after viewing you video! We definately are STRONGER when well informed and thanks for being giving of your time and research. I feel like i can do better cause you helped me know better!! :}

Thank you Audrey, this has really helped.
my hair doesn’t get hard or mushy but i do have frizzy ends so does that mean I need more moisture ? Ends trimmed? Or protein?
Thank you for the helpful video.
I Got Tha Book On Kindle Alot Of Education On My Hair I Wish All Black Ppl Knew These Things! Gt Tha Science Of Black Hair Book! ;)
This genius analogy gave me ah aha moment, definitely subbing...
Ooooooh i get it now!!!! I now understand the “mushy” shit everyone been talking about. The noodle thing really cleared it up lol because over cooked noodles are nasty and mushy

You do a great job with your hair
Thank you!!!!!
Hey Audrey, I wanted to ask if an individual has low density and very fine hair. Do you recommend more protein treatments in addition to continuous moisture?
Cool thanks for the tips
Great advice thanks
Thanks. But what is the wet assessment? Or are you just feeling your hair like you did the cooked pasta?
*My problem is that I'm not sure if my hair is balanced or contains too much moisture. It stretches and retracts, but it might also stay streched if I try to carefully push the "stretch-limit". Anyone got any suggestions? Only tested on single strands of hair.*
You want to use a moisturising protein treatment
Great video.
How often would you recommend a person who relaxes (but stretches up to 16 months) do a protein treatment (Egg +heat) every 4 or every 6 weeks?
what would you say about my hair?? i have verrry soft hair, its wavy, fine-to normal hair i guess could say and a lil bit frizzy....but it falls out easily..??...its soft and looks nice though when i shower ( i wash my hair 3 times a week) i always get a lot of fallout and its always been that way, if i touch my hair its soft and i can play with it but i look at my hand and see hair fell out lol
Waiting for that moisture protein strand test video
i get a lil fall out when i comb my hair when its wet....but its very tangle free, virgin, and soft...so i need protein?
Hello, I've heard that coconut oil has protein in it and daily use could cause the hair to become brittle. I have fine low porosity hair and was wondering should I stop using coconut oil? I use it all throughout my hair regimen.

What if I am protien sensitive and need some deep conditioning. What can I use? So many dc have protien in them.

How can I balance my hair texture? Plus my hair is thick too. I only relax my hair every 4 to 5 months.
I henna my hair i was wondering will i still need to do a protein treatment on my hair?
This is off topic, but is your last name Lao/Thai?
Excellent
Will you be doing videos on transitioning?
Do the two conditions have DIFFERENT effects on your curl pattern or definition that can be seen?
They have different effects. She said it's subtle. That means not easily seen

Very helpful
thank you
Use the aphogee to stop breakage. I had that problem the last time I permed my hair it broke my hair off and that was the last time i permed my hair. 1year natural. To be honest perms are not good for our hair. My suggestion is to stop using it and just just get your hair straighen with a heat protection on it so the heat won't break ur hair. Good Luck!!
New subbie thank you
Is protein a heat protectant?
Great
I forgot to mention my hair is natural no chemicals whatsoever but I do wear wigs everyday and keep my hair braided underneath. I normally wash and condition once a week.
Where have you been missing out on this RUclips money and publicity Audrey? Your book is the reason half of these yt hair chicks are even on here acting like hair scientists.lol
