Man I’m so glad I got back into mtb. As of January 2024 I was 330 lbs and hadn’t rode my bike in 6 months. Not to injury but just from lack of motivation. Has of today 7/5/24 I am down to 255 and have been riding as much as I can and makes is way easier to bike and so glad I came back across your channel. You got it brother now have motivated me even more to get down in the 220s

I had kidney cancer awhile back and in 2018 lost my left kidney, went through all the fun things that come with it. I really didn't have much of a support system and became extremely depressed, to the point I just wanted to end it all. In my depression my thyroid decided to go haywire and I put on alot of weight. I'm currently over 300 lbs. Sometimes, I feel like im too heavy to ride my bike. I work a very physical job and I go to the gym a few times a week but, the hardest thing is sticking with a healthy diet. Mcdonald's is only a couple blocks away so, it's definitely easy to get side tracked. My girlfriend has started helping with finding healthy alternatives to all the junk I had been consuming and is going to start going to the gym with me. My goal is to be able to get my life back, my health back, and to be able to get back on my bike. You are an absolute inspiration, keep shredding 🤙

Hey Rob-Awesome series you are running here. It is nice to see a guy being vulnerable and showing the struggles with the weight. There are a lot of us that are in the same situation. And it can be downright depressing. I have been doing the yo-yo thing for many, many years. I quit drinking in 2005. Weight has been an issue ever since.
I wrecked on my road bike in July of 2023. I suffered a complete AC joint separation (clavicle from shoulder blade including 3 torn ligaments). In your 50's, things don't heal as quickly as the used to. It took 11 months for me to get back on the bike. I gained 30 lbs, up to 282. My heaviest ever. Doc told me I am prediabetic now and that I have to drop some weight. I am incorporating a lot more healthy eating and am back to riding about 3 days a week. I have dropped down to the low 260's. Watching your videos has been inspiring and helps me to do the right thing when I don't want to. You are doing great work for you and for us. Keep at it, brother.

I separated my shoulder years ago and it took me like 6 months to get back on the bike. I can totally relate with what you are going through. So far it sounds like you are making positive changes. Keep after it! As time went on, I fell off the wagon, and I went right back to where I started. Now I'm back on track, and this time it's 1000% my new lifestyle and I'm loving it!!! I'm down from 229 to 211 in 3 months! You, sir, are a beast at dropping those pounds!!! So I hope me taking a page from your book and finding success helps you to keep living your new lifestyle! I’ve reversed so many health issues on this diet I’m not too worried if it hinders my riding the slightest bit. But i can see how for a more performance or endurance rider would want some carbs to help on the long rides. Great job! I've enjoyed following your journey with its ups and downs! I have lived most my adult life 30-50 lbs overweight, and have similarly to you, lost a bunch of weight fast several times over the years. This last time, I lost about 40-50 lbs in 3 or so months, but the main component in that journey was completing #75hard and felt like I had made more of a "lifestyle" change even though I didn't continue with all of the 75 hard daily critical tasks once it was over. I've kept it off for 2 years, but the past 3 months I have seen it start to creep up again, up about 8 ish lbs from my low. I think it's a gradual slacking off on the diet end of things, I really believe what they say that you can't out train a bad diet...especially for us food addicts!! Anyhow, sorry for the long post but I appreciate your journey and have been inspired by you so thanks. Stay accountable but don't be too hard on yourself when you slip up, just get right back on track the next day. Best wishes brother! How's the running going? Another thing I did over the past year - year and a half was a run streak (run EVERY day) but that's another story for another day...lol.

Awesome Video! My one addition which actually goes along with your "be consistent" philosophy, is to be consistent with your weigh-in's. I regularly wake up, use the bathroom, and weigh myself in my shorts that I slept in. I have found that I can fluctuate 5+ lbs. per day and being consistent with how I weigh myself gives me the most accurate results, which prevents myself from felling let down if I'm a little heavy at night. I can lose 3lbs over-night on most nights, so it's nice to take that out of the equation as well. Nice work, Keep it up!

If you had more information about what was happening between events both good and bad, you would be better informed on what worked and what didn't.
After a while this pattern becomes easy to read.
Once you do it for a while you can avoid the things that always lead to a setback and maximize the things that move the needle.
Actually doing this to your personal satisfaction is the win you actually want and need.

    2023 May - 228lbs
Lost tons of weight and rewarded myself by taking a big trip to Bentonville and then over to western NC. Had a blast, and did much longer rides than I had in previous trips. I felt awesome.
I got back home and I struggled to keep up with my semi-strict diet and exercise plan...ended up drinking more and ordering food many times a week.

These days I feel like my cardio is in a great place but I just feel less healthy and like everything is a much harder then it should be. You can do it! You’ve proved it in the past, as well as the motivation you have presently. I am in alcoholic who has been sober for 15 years, and my quest is easy compared to yours! I just cannot pick up A drink. Your quest is to eat less but you do have to turn the tiger 3 to 4 times a day. But with all that being said, do you know what to do just do it! I always got a kick out of watching the big loser because of the inspiration it exudes. You have my mental support, but that will do you nothing if you don’t keep your own mental support! Good luck on the journey, and moreover, than luck have fun! And fun, doesn’t need to have a beer or a margarita, or even nachos for that matter, Fun is what you make it!

Great job. Keep it up, you'll get to your goal! I'm in the same boat. As we get older, our metabolism slows down and we have to find a way to re-activate our metabolism so our body burns food we eat rather than storing it as fat. I've found removing sugar from my meals/drinks has worked for me. It's NO small feat to remove sugar, believe me, it's hard as hell but you must remind yourself it's for your health. Stay strong, stay determined and I know you'll achieve anything you set your mind to.

Love your videos and the fact that you don't give up. Doc told me diabetes was coming if I didn't change things. Went from 7-8 mile rides to 20+ mile rides and lost 30 pounds since that visit. Stuck at this weight though. It's rough...after making progress, the carbs looks so good. 🙂
Heading up to Auburn for my first rides there. Challenging myself to see if I can make the climbs. If I make it, I'll be signing up for an enduro race in a few weeks.

I find it easier to make performance goals with exercise and weight lifting throughout the year. The by product of that is the weight managment and body composition. The weight is too fluctuating but staying in the exercise goals keeps me in the neighborhood for the ebb and flows of the weight stuff. Maybe try a year of performance goals and just casually track the weight like weekly.
Good luck. It is a lifeli g thing for many of us. The good news is the stronger you get the healthier you get as well!

The elements to loosing weight are very straight forward - staying motivated, disciplined and consistent is what defines success or failure.
What worked and continues to work for me:
    1) - Stop drinking alcohol full stop, NOT EVEN one glass of beer/wine a week. You will dramatically reduce inflammation in your body, loose weight and sleep/feel better. After 4 weeks you will have a completely new mindset and feel the benefits - the effects are nothing short of miraculous. I cannot stress how important it is to simply abandon alcohol. If you need to drink in social settings, choose non-alcoholic beers/wines.
    2) - Stop eating sugar in all forms: juices, energy drinks, desserts, sweets/candy, sodas etc. For energy (carbs) choose: brown rice, sweet potatoes, steamed organic veggies. Pasta is fine just don't eat it 7 days a week.
    3) - Eat: organic meats (if not a vegan), fresh fruits/veggies. Also fat is good for you - saturated/monounsaturated fats: coconut oils, fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel), butter, avocados. Sat away from vegetable oils - cook with butter or coconut oils.
If you stop ALL alcohol and ALL processed sugars you will be 95% there. "Treating" yourself once in a while is important, but it can be slippery slope...I have a major sweet tooth and I allow myself a glass or 2 of ice, cold chocolate milk once a week after working out, at this point it's now enough for me. So far so good, since January of 2024 I've lost a ton of weight and I feel great. Get educated, stay disciplined and you will be rewarded with great health both mentally and physically!

Diet/food intake is everything when it comes to weight loss.
Exercise is useless without strict food intake management.
Get As close to zero sugar and zero carb as possible is the first step.
    Intermittent fasting is step two.
Carnivore diet is a fast track to dropping weight...research it.
Mix is exercise at a rate that you can manage without burning out.
    Expect it to take time.
I lost 30 lbs in 2 months with the above program, I'm 5lbs under my target weight of 180 lbs.

"Nobody said it was easy." Losing weight is probably one of the hardest challenges one can attempt, especially when you're used to a certain lifestyle. Old habits have a tendency to not only die hard but also rise from the dead. Personally, I found out for myself that counting calories really does the trick for me to hack my own psychology and take out the guess work. Weighing in daily also helps me holding myself accountable every day and holding close watch on my progress and/ or slip ups. A daily challenge just seems more manageable to me. Whatever path you chose, I'll be rooting for you.

    • @B1KER
      @B1KER  7 месяцев назад +1

I hear ya man. I always say do what works for you. I’m also a calorie counter. But realistically I did it for so long I dont really need to “count” so much. I like weighing weekly. The normal up and downs you see daily unmotivate me. Once a week is good. I tried once a month once but that drove me crazy not knowing where I was.

    • @HeretiCflow
      @HeretiCflow 7 месяцев назад

@@B1KER crazy how that works. What motivates me is what unmotivates you. It really IS a headgame. When it comes to counting calories: Never trust your intuition! I learned that the hard way and I had years of experience. 😅 2 years I was wondering why I didn't make progress and then I started using MFP again was like "OH! Well, there's the problem!"

    • @B1KER
      @B1KER  7 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, I hear ya on that. If I plateau and don't have a legitimate reason to why it's happening I'll definitely go back to actually counting. At this point I know as long as I'm eating healthy and not over endulging that I'll be at a deficit with the exercise I'm doing. We'll see if I can get away with that all the way to the goal though.

Meats, veggies, some fruit. Sourdough if you absolutely must have bread here and there. The rest is just totally unnecessary to your body. My breakthrough came when I realized that most things that were called food, were not. I finally broke the eating schedule habit and just ate when I was hungry. Not bored hungry, but stomach rumbling hungry. Turns out, a meal and a snack is usually all I need per day. I dont count calories anymore, I simply give my body what it needs and nothing more.

The big secret of weight loss is to limit your calories, nothing dire, you don't have to be hungry. I had reached 302 lbs. and decided I needed a change. I limited myself to 2000 calories a day and dropped 50lbs. I had a lot of stress at work and put 30 lbs back on. Finally at the end of 2022 I retired and after that went back to my 2000 calorie limit. I wrote down everything I ate. Today I'm at 223 lbs, 79 lbs. lost. The biggest thing is to get rid of the empty calories, I stopped drinking soda and eating candy bars and cupcakes. I give myself a day off on birthday, etc. but I have smaller portions. Still losing and aiming for 200.

It is extremely difficult to overcome one's biology. We evolved always being on the brink of starvation. So we naturally crave salt, fat and sugar. Remember discipline is doing something you don't want to do. Changing lifestyle/habits is very difficult. Once that change becomes normal it becomes much easier but it takes a while.
I don't have a e-mtb so can't say from experience but others that do have said it has made them more fit cause they ride much more, more often. Just don't let the e-bike do all the work. Maybe the new Nebo could do it.
Be more active in your regular everyday stuff. For example when parking at work or a store, instead of parking closer to the door park at the farthest spot, instead of elevators take the stairs. Those nickles and dimes adds up to dollars.

Contrary to most beliefs, I found the e-bike the best weight-loss tool. I do strength training 5days a week, and with the ebike, i can set the assist level to be just enough to keep me in zone 2 without tiring my legs and not hindering my lower body workout.

It's funny you say that. I've just realized something similar. Instead of doing a boring road ride I can go out and do a 4k mtb ride on an e-bike when I need an active rest day.

I really feel a e-bike allows people to put in more time on the trails, and that actually ends up being more productive than your high intensity short lap on an analog bike! Yes if you compare same lap on both bikes it doesn’t compare but if the e-bike now allows you the strength to do multiple laps and more time doing low intensity cardio

@@82motorhead I'm curious once I get mine to look at the watt data and calories burned etc. I think it may really depend on how you ride the eeb. The thing is, most people don't push as hard on the eeb. I did the road bike comparisson which the analog was better in my use case. But I'm not sure if it is better or not on the MTB. If you were putting down the same watts as analog, it's more than likely better on the eeb. But man...mentally that's really hard to do. It's so easy to let it take the edge off and not push as hard.

Watching you rebound and get disheartened + struggle so much made me sad. Rebounding is a classic symptom of overtraining, or under eating. Or both. 100% of the time it will turn around and bite you in the ass, it’s a hormonal thing.
Weight loss should be steady, easy and effortless.
Keep fat intake below 10g a day, you naturally burn about 60g a day even by being sedentary. To speed up fat burn stay very low intensity on the bike and go for as long as you can using carb as close to 0g fat for fuel in form of sugar or bread, sweets, energy bars, fruit whatever suits. Keep fully hydrated to keep heart rate lower. Stay in the fat burning zone, don’t exert yourself otherwise you can spike your cortisol and bloat out, and start burning into tomorrows energy.
Go hard 1 day a week. Sweat out the sodium, then be careful of your salt intake.
    Don’t cut your sleep short.
Be careful of anabolic foods, milk, eggs etc blow you out big time, full of estreogen, this is why girls on the pill struggle with weight. Protein turns to fat, fat turns to fat, carbs do not, tons of recent studies on this for proof. Excess carb gets burned rapidly in a normal functioning metabolism via increased heart rate, you’ll get hot and sweaty and eventually just piss out the rest. But very very difficult to over eat on carb. Carb gets stored in muscles as muscle glycogen, and means you can stay hydrated properly as 1g of carb allows you to store 3G of water don’t confuse his with water retention which is edema = bad, this is more of the veins popping, ripped look.
I do not know if you are going the high fat / low carb route, but the only way to lose weight doing this is to cut calories, but then metabolism halts, energy drops off and thyroid skyrockets. Rebounds are extremely common, especially if trying to do hard workouts at the same time!!!
And… don’t be too scared of eating pizza, I make my own, less than like 5g, I can eat ‘em everyday and just feel completely fuelled up and ride hard everyday.
Beer isn’t great, it’s 0g fat and higher carb though, but it kills off your red bloods which can hold you back in terms of fitness ruining your fat burning capacity.
Make sure blood is good, b12 and iron are so important for fat burn health. They keep your red blood cell count high, this is how we burn fat, oxygen, fat gets used and then we breathe it out. Look it up.
I’ll refrain from further commenting, I posted what others believe to be controversial but there is enough snippets of info in this that you can do your own research.
I couldn’t stand by and leave you to it, but I have done my part now and if you choose to ignore it, then I at least know that I did my best.
    All the best mate
