He could read the phone book and make it sound good. Just love hearing him speak!
Omg his voice and accent!!❤️❤️❤️
I just simply adore this man ❤️🍻
Love his voice
Would have loved to have had a drink with him. I have just starting listening to the Sherlock Holmes radio programs. Many were sponsored by Petri Wine and I note Nigel Bruce doing the ads but not Rathbone. His wife had the reputation of being a spendthrift, so he probably needed the money by this point. Man was the epitome of sophistication.
As quickly as the money came in, his wife spent it. The poor man was never able to retire because of this.
@@leishayoung4124 Same thing happened to James Mason, his wife was a spendthrift, had many affairs, took him to the cleaners in the divorce.
I agree that he looks uncomfortable as hell appearing in a commercial, but I doubt he had a choice. With the advent of James Dean, Marlon Brando and the method school of acting in the 50s, polished, theater trained actors like Rathbone and Vincent Price were no longer in high demand. They had to get work anywhere they could, which is why Price starred in so many costume driven potboilers and Rathbone started hawking beer. It sucked, but at least they kept working and paid their bills.
Good post, surprising it took 9 years to get its 1st thumbs up!
simonferrer Holmes,basil,no.one.sherlock.
He and his wife threw the best brunches in Hollywood!! I can only imagine what a wonderful host he must have been!! Also the greatest dancer in film!!!
On top of everything else he excelled at, he was a great dancer? Wow!!
😄
Tonight's film, The Lost Weekend, starring Ray Milland. Drink up!
I laughed my butt off at this comment. I salute you.
1st Intermission: "Now, let's enjoy the feature film." (gulp)
2nd Intermission: "Now here's the first intermission of our show. Enjoying yourselves?"
(gulp, gulp) (o.s) "May I have another please?"
3rd Intermission: "N-now, here's the show. (gulp, gulp, gulp)
4th Intermission: "Noow. Uhh. Oh, bollocks! I spilt me bloody beer! G-giss 'notha, mate! (gulp, gulp, gulp - belch! - Ahhh!)
5th Int.: (finishes another glass, throws it at screen) Fuckoff!! (falls off chair, hits floor, face first)
(LOL)
😂😂😂
Doesn't everyone dress up in suit and tie at home to drink beer and watch a fake cardboard television?
They should do
Great to see him doing anything and this proves it.
Some of the comments on here are priceless.
In 1963, Basil agreed to be the "host" of a series of films telecast on several stations in the Midwest that were sponsored by the Leisy Brewing Company ("Leisy's Light Beer"). A local announcer would usually introduce the name of the film being shown that evening, deliver the commercials "live" (on Basil's cues), and mention "next week's feature" at the very end.
You're my pleasure Basil Rathbone 😆
i know that when i want to chill out in the evening i like nothing more than to put on my best suit, a shirt and tie, and keep the jacket buttoned for the entire movie.
what could be more relaxing?
That's how a gentleman behaves at home ...
i like how the TV screen was just a hunk of unfinished wood.
Actually, I never noticed. My eyes were elsewhere. 😏
please insert the scene where Basil drains his bloated bladder back into the beer glass
His beer glass was a remote? Cool.
Nice. Cant believe Robert Downey, Jr. will reprise his role of Sherlock Holmes.
it would take a true "Iron Man" to match up to Scotland Yard's best!
No one could hold a candle to him.
👍👍
You can tell what a good actor he is. As an Englishman that American beer must have been making him wretch...... not a sign of it in his
performance though.
He excelled at everything he did!!
😊
Man never drank a Duff in his life!
Basil becoming an alcoholic before viewers of early television!
"...Well..."-Liese Beer -Making television seem tolerable. "Watson, fetch me spares, I`ve wet `em again..."
Leisy
Rathbone did the same in Pittsburgh at one point. He and his wife were known for throwing almost constant parties at their LA home and some theories go that he needed these low-rent spots to help feeding the kitty when the film roles started to dwindle.
favorite movie "Casanova's Big Night" with Basil and Bob Hope.
I heard that Rathbone didn't want to do the commercial but his wife talk him into it because they needed the money really bad.
Nice first sip
How about that! A commercial where the actor actually drank the alcohol
Indubitably !
3 months ago...hahahahaha great
Basel the lush, watch him chug that beer.
wow he really slugs that shit down doesn't he?
Why not Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and RD,Jr. as Watson?
Or better yet...Simon Pegg as Sherlock Holmes and Nick Frost as Watson! Now thats casting!
Elementary.
Old Basil came to drink, he did, eh? .
Was that beer popular? Never heard of it...
Leisy's Light was available primarily in the Midwest (the brewery was located in Cleveland).
He only ate half of his sandwich. Does the camera man get the other half?
