We’re so frustrated with reels because a reel that isn’t that good can suddenly get a good reach (with the same hashtags as our other reels) and better videos that we’ve put more work into don’t get a good reach. It often seem more like a coincidence which ones take off.
To be honest, I find that that happens with literally everything in life. The things you think are average and you don't put much work into tend to take off, and the things that you put your heart and soul into it can often stumble. We're right there with you 😭 Keep pushing! - C

Reels are really one of the most beneficial ways to grow on IG. Many people do some of these common mistakes you mentioned, though. If you listen and implement what these guys are sharing, you'll see the improvement you're seeking for. 😉

I think I figured out why my reach dropped significantly.
The quality of my videos!!
When I post recording on my iPhone and then open Instagram and attach the quality isn’t as good when I record right from reels.
Also, my reels with just music and the videos recorded right from reels were my toppies!!

Hi Shannon! Agreed, IG seemed to have formatted the algorithm to bless everyone with a ton of reach on their first Reel, and then it starts to dwindle after that. One thing that worked for us was to take a TikTok-style approach to Reels, and it changed the game for us for multiple accounts. Study your niche on TikTok and use that approach on IG and see how it goes. Thanks for watching! - C

Posting everyday and using all tools to make reels and other features on my account my reels don't even reach my own followers and that sucks really bad i end up getting not more than 500 views even on a 5second reel. I spend so much time making content and the quality of my content is really good too yet it doesn't take off im sure the algorithm is screwing me up and Nothing else.

So on my personal brand account I’ve managed to do very well with reel engagement and careful editing seems to be the key with the sound just like tiktok. But captions that are relatable and intentional with your hashtags that help tell the story of the video. I do have an issue with another account I manage where our reels do not reach audience outside current followers.
That's great re your personal account, well done! For the other account, it's likely a mix of testing all elements - hashtags, topic/quality, caption, tagging theme pages etc. - C
I have had such a frustrating drop in my reels performance and I can’t figure out why. The first several reels I posted got 3-4k views, hundreds of likes, all was well. Then the last several that I’ve made have barely gotten any views. It was just a matter of a few days between reels, they’re on the same topics, mostly the same hashtags, same day and time of posting. I’ve also tried different day/time, shorter format, different topics and tags, nothing. I’m so disappointed and don’t understand what happened.
I’m having a similar experience. 😐 I’d love to hear others’ thoughts if anything changed behind the scenes in the last week or so. Thanks!
It's tough to diagnose, the only way is to keep testing. There must be some other elements you can change to see if something works, even the format of the Reels. Across the board, we're all experiencing a drop in reach/views/engagement, it's happening to us and all of our clients so it's not just you. All we can do is keep testing! - C

But honestly I do believe it’s like a lottery :) you can use all of the amazing hacks that you have provided for us, but there isn’t a perfect time to post it and it’s whatever the algorithm decides. maybe one of them days after I post 1000 reals who knows… but sometimes it’s discouraging, because you see other peoples content that is way crapier , than yours get 10/20000 views
So welcome! I genuinely get it, it can be a bit of a lottery, even with all the best practices. It reminds us of RUclips - it took us a solid 18 months of posting weekly to get traction. We just kept at it, studied the industry/topics/keywords, kept testing constantly. And once you get in the algorithm, you're mostly good. IG is similar in that way - once you've had a few successful Reels, it tends to favour you and these best practices typically can help you get in there, along with constant testing. Just keep going would be my best suggestion :) - C

Would love to do all nativley but the instagram reels editing section is so gltichy and full of bugs it's just pure frustration. Not to mention that a saved draft is almost guraranteed to disappear. And they really want to compete with TikTok like this? Ridicolous.

Thanks for watching, Philipp! Fair points, we use the saved drafts all the time and haven't had any issues with deletion. Could be a glitch for sure, they're definitely building the plane while flying with some of this stuff but eventually they'll nail it. - C
So it seems like the only thing I did wrong with my reel today was not use their tools because I took pride in the fact that the photos didn't need a filter and any transitions, text etc. would have just made it look cheesy. The longer I've been on Instagram the more my likes have dwindled, I've gone from averaging 60 likes per a post to barely hitting double figures. Surely my content can't be that bad.
When we say Instagram's tools, it's just the editing of the Reel in-app vs editing outside of the app, not necessarily filters. Keep going! - C
My problem is my first two reels got many views but stopped right after that... I made better content later with good editing and all but it didn't get reach as before... I thought it would at least increase reach but I got nothing out of them... But I feel like maybe I have to post enough to get good result.I just posted 5 videos and first two just got greater engagement even my follower increased by around 30 numbers... I'm not demotivated but I just thought if only reels reach would grow with every new video... But I'll keep posting it though .Maybe at some point ,it will start growing.
Great work with the first bunch of posts, but yes you'll need to keep posting regularly and consistently to get ongoing results. Reach doesn't seem to go up with each Reel posted, it fluctuates so you always need to be testing different approaches. Keep going! - C

Hi! That's odd, we've definitely heard of it but it's not super common. If it happens, try doing a hard reset on your phone, close the app etc. That can usually kick it back in gear. - C

I watched one video where the person said that she uses between 5-8 hashtags. I asked why would IG give us 30 #’s to use if they didn’t want us to use them and she responded that with reels it confuses the system. 🤔 🤨 I think I will continue to use all 30 until (like you two said) Instagram says otherwise.
How would she know that? That's our point, the people saying these things have no proof nor any real indication from the app itself that Reels is "confused" by more than 5-8 hashtags. I think that's wise, if we're told otherwise by IG themselves then we'll change our strategy and our message, but until then, all you can do is test and see if there's a sweet spot for you. This is a great video! Do you have thoughts about music for a business account? If you add music outside of the platform (music that otherwise would not be available to business accounts), do you get "punished" for it? Or if you grab music from another Reel and use it? For business accounts, music is limited. But I suspect you will say go for the "native" options! Love your videos, thank you!

If you just put the music on in an external editing process, you'll definitely get the post removed and a strike against your account, so we definitely don't recommend doing that. I have a question regarding hashtags. In my previous knowledge of hashtags and Instagram, I have believed you will be punished if you use too many hashtags. Alternatively, that you at the very least need to rotate the type/categories that you use, as otherwise Instagram will consider your hashtags as spam. Do you have any information regarding this? I feel quite scared to use hashtags now due to all of this
Thank you for the kind words, glad the video was helpful! We seem to get somebody mentioning the volume of hashtags daily. There is no proof anywhere whatsoever that Instagram wants us to use less than 30 hashtags. That's is the #1 Instagram myth we see, if they wanted us to use less than 30 then they wouldn't let us use 30, it's as simple as that. Re the hashtag banks, absolutely, you need to have a separate and unique hashtag bank for each content category/type that you post, and refresh them every quarter at the most. Don't be sacred to use hashtags! - C
I was using an app that generates hashtags and I would use all of them idk my reel views have declined so bad sigh but I didn’t know too many hashtags could cause this.

I suspect that uploading reels from your PC versus your phone makes a difference too. When I upload reels from my dinosaur of a phone, then I get views. I literally just created a real with recorded content from my canon camera and edited it with my video editing software and it bombed. Its rather discouraging considering a lot more preparation went into creating it.
It's possible for sure. They seem to really want us all to use their native tools to edit videos rather than using software on a computer. There's no direct proof that that affects the Reel's performance, but there are some correlations for sure. Maybe try to test a few that you edit natively (shot with the phone, too) against ones with your DSLR and see if there's a consistent, notable difference. - C

Reels are so iffy....I get so frustrated when I heed the advice of a small business coach and followed all the tips and tricks to boost my engagement to have myself not being seen much. I rely a lot on Tiktok and I am getting noticed because I try to post short 10-20s footage 1-2 times everyday, but I'm just very curious: how does getting noticed on tiktok reflect on your instagram audience reach? Because Instagram is the platform where I sell my products.......
Hi Andrea, getting noticed on TikTok doesn't affect Instagram aside from people on TT enjoying your content so much that they find you on IG and follow you there. You could try using ads on IG for your Reels content, or just keep testing different approaches to your IG content and lean into what sticks. Thanks for watching - C

I can’t seem to find answers, but I’ve always had my IG profile public, many of my reels in the past have gotten viral with 1m+ views, now my reels sit around 400-1000 views & won’t leave my profile .. as in only followers are seeing and liking it, which is very weird. What does that mean?
Hi Kristen, the algorithm has changed and with so many more Reels being posted daily, there's more competition for eyeballs, so posts aren't going as viral as they used to be. It can still happen, just keep posting and keep testing - C

Can somebody explain why my reels get stuck/freeze after a certain point? Usually anywhere between 1ooo-2ooo
It would mean that the algorithm isn't feeding the Reel anymore as it tapped out in its engagement. That is based on how many people it was fed to and the engagement rate with that audience, so if people stop engaging with it, they stop serving it. Hope that helps! - C

Wow ! This is so helpful! I'm new to instragram and I'm flooded with your info. Thank u! I'm trying to figure out how to put music to only part of my Reel. I have a video with me reel along with pictures. I want to put music to my pictures but I have a video clip at the end and I want the voice being heard. I tried lowering the volume to.the song but it lowered it throughout the whole video. I found something that might help - its a option that says "slide the bar to the part of your Reel that u want to song on." I tried it but it doesn't slide over or anything. Is there any way u could explain how to add music to only part of your Reel and add your home video clip and allow the voices to be heard? I hope this makes sense. I haven't found a tutorial to answer this
Hi, and thank you for the kind words! Instagram recently released an update that allows you to only use music on the part of the video that you want. If you're unable to do it, it likely means that it hasn't launched in your country yet, or on your specific account yet. Maybe try from another account that you have to see if it works? - C

I almost posted more than 25 reels with the appropriate hashtags and being consistent and used trending songs after all these thing I’m still not getting more than 3k views! What should i do ?
3k views is actually really solid! All you can do is to keep testing, really. Use different hashtags, try different types of Reels. The other thing you can do is use paid ads for your Reels (though the views don't count towards your Reels, they're "ghost" ads). - C

@@Highseasonco Yes I'm definitely understanding that. I posted a Reel yesterday that started off great then just nose dive for the rest of the day. Today I posted a Reel that's performing horribly but it's getting a lot of engagement from my followers so yes it's definitely an experiment.

This explains why my last reels’ reach was really bad. I use Canva’s template and there’s an empty space in the video, even though the photos are all mine.
I thought it was the hashtags I add in the caption bcz in the previous reels I add the hashtags in the 1st comment. But turns out it was the design, that the video doesn’t look natural.

Hi guys! Great video. What I'm seeing is that were getting good views but were not reaching non followers. We can see when we publish posts we get a good fifty/fifty split and get followers. But with Reels we get more engagement but only 95/5 follower/non follower ratio leading to a really low follower count. Our hashtag strategy is all the same for both. Any tips?
Hi Megan! Interesting, it could be the specific hashtags you're using, but your Insights would break that down (you could compare reach from hashtags for both post types). It could also be that now Reels is more competitive, the ones that are most engaging seem to take up more space in the algorithm. You could test posting Reels to the grid or just leaving them in the Reels feed to see what that does, along with other things like sharing to Stories (do this for every post). It's a tough one to figure out as there's not enough data provided natively to make any key decisions. Keep testing different content types, times of posting, do daily engagement etc, hopefully it'll step up! - C
So my friend own a business and has a good amount of followers (around 13k)but her reel views are dropping to avg of 2k-3k. She posts the content on daily basis and it’s quite trendy with good quality. Any advice or suggestions to overcome this?
Hi! So this is happening to almost everybody. For one of our accounts, we recently took an approach to Reels where we posted our videos that we made for TikTok with their platform in mind, and now they're by far our best performing Reels. A different approach is key! - C

When I didn’t use hashtags on Reels it was an accident. So I tried it again and that video did well too. I’m definitely not recommending it every time tho

Hi Nirusha, that's strange - it sounds like either a glitch or something that will roll out to your account soon enough. You can definitely use your old account, I can't think of any reason it wouldn't have Reels. Your reach on an old account will be even worse than an active account, unfortunately, but you can slowly build it back up. - C
Hi can business accounts use normal songs, I see others which have business accounts use it and I’ve used afew but just wanted to make sure about reels

do you guys know why is IG showing my reels only locally (90% reach in my home country) where nobody cares about my stuff? I would need my reels to be shown in the US or at least internationally.. I am so frustrated, I tried everything and there is no point for me uploading to IG if it's just showing the reels to people around me.. there is no chance for my account to grow that way. Hi! I'd imagine that'd be the go-to for the algorithm as they'd assume most accounts would want their content to be seen by those close by. You could try different hashtag banks to see if that helps change who sees your content, or look into paid theme accounts to give you a boost in the markets you're aiming for. - C

I’ve seen a lot of videos where they’re saying that hashtags make no difference on Instagram and TikTok I have not tested it out. But there are a ton of influencers who do not use hashtags at all and say that the algorithms rank content based on health of the account and what’s actually in the content.
People keep telling us that! If someone already has a ton of followers, hashtags won't make much of a difference. But our audience are primarily business owners or individuals trying to grow, and the fact remains that hashtags make a very, very large impact. - C

Hi I notice when I post reals one after the other the reach is low but when I post a photo or two then post a real it dose better. Is there anything too it or is it just in my head. Is there a number on how much times in a week you can post reals?
Hi, that's interesting. If it tends to make a difference for you then I'd suggest to keep doing it. I've never seen anything official from IG about requiring other posts between Reels, but the idea is to test things and if you find something that works, run with it. That can happen from time to time. It shouldn't matter, we only post 4K videos and we have no issues. It could be the app or your phone needs to be updated? - C

I’m so pressured these past few days. My reels were getting 4k-31k viewers but one day I messed my hashtags up which are my usual hashtags that helped me get 4k-31k views. My views dropped, I barely get 1k views now I don’t know what to do.
Hi Kei, this is actually happening to everyone. It seems to be an algorithm adjustment where reach isn't as strong as it used to be. Try switching up your content, creating TikTok-style Reels really worked well for some of our accounts. - C

I post like 1 reel a day but still isn't working I'm getting like 700 views or 3000 sometimes it's not working for me the reach is - for me from past 7 days idk why it's happening and for hastags some ppl say don't use hastags like for others without has tags they are blowing up for me it's not happening so should i keep using hastags or not and for posting to i post like every single day
Hi! We would recommend to always use 30 hashtags. As far as the reach, it certainly varies, so the only option is to keep testing and trying different things to see what resonates with your audience. - C

Thank you for this video! I was wondering though. Instagram took down a reel a posted 6 months ago due to copyright of a song. But that song was used, by searching in the reels library itself :( So why is Instagram allowing me to search, apply and edit a song the offer thenselves; to proceed to remove the video for that same song used! Then why offer the SAVE audio button, or why have a musicnote icon if the music found is going to be flagged. Im frustrated by this. It is very contrdictory. Let me know what you think. Thanks! :)

Probably never lol. That's right, but just screen record the video if you make it in TikTok as keeping the watermark will negatively effect your Reels reach. Kill it! - C
I got all ur point about entertaining and all about three second critical time, I follow all about that, but sometime for UNKNOWN reason my reels only reach my follower, and like u said "resolution,entertaining, three second, political sensitive stuff" there is nothing wrong with my reels, it just don't want to REACH people. I wonder is there some penalty that made this thing happen, or is it just my old account that have problem with reels. I thought it's a bug or some penalty, Idk anymore
It's a strange thing, it's happening to everybody. I think that because Reels are still so new in the overrall scheme of Instagram that we're still getting used to it. They gave away reach like crazy in the beginning and we all kind of thought that would continue, but now Reels behave like any other post. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Once you get in the good graces of the algorithm, you should be fine. Keep going! - C
