  • I’ve been using Bear -- the minimal, secure Evernote alternative -- on and off for nearly 2.5 years. And every time I come back to it, I’m always surprised and want to use it more. 😍
    Bear is like a more secure, more aesthetic child of Evernote and Apple Notes. It’s really simple to get started with, there aren’t any confusing bells and whistles, and it never gets in the way of your work. Let’s check it out! 🐻

    The iCloud storage is the best part; simple text files I can see in the file system and aren’t abstracted. The very modest payment goes towards developing and refining the app. They offload storage to iCloud, which is relatively inexpensive and helps them focus on the experience. What’s not to love all around. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best 1.50 I pay per month bar none. Next is my .99 cents in extra iCloud storage. Lastly, Spotify at 10.00. Those 3 make the core of my personal and work life.

    I've spent all day looking for alternative to Apple Notes (which is robust but doesn't have text highlighting). Your video was fun, informative, and helped me decide on Bear, especially as the Devs work toward merging the Panda formatting features into the main Bear app down the road. Thanks!

    I really like how Bear looks and feels, but I have a problem how slow it's development is. Notion is great and would be perfect if data extraction was a real possibility. Obsidian seems to be created for people who know how to code. I can move in it fine, but have a constant fear that if I mess sth up, I won't be able to make it work how I want to again. As to other apps - I'd love to see your take on Craft.

    I’ve been using Bear for about a year now. I’m torn because there are many things I love about it, but a couple of things I really don’t. The pros for me are: (1) exceptional design, both aesthetically and ergonomically; (2) sticks to the Mac design ethos of “just works” with minimum configuration options; (3) it focusses on one task, instead of trying to be all things to all users; (4) I find its non-standard hierarchical tagging system that allows spaces in tag names extremely powerful and I use it extensively, although I see in some of the comments below that others disagree with me about that. I’m looking forward to the next release with the new editor with outlining/folding (headers and list items), tables, and footnotes support - those are things I really want. However, the cons are: (1) no “graph view” or similar tool if you want use a zettelkasten or other graphing method for note; (2) all notes are stored in a SQLite database, which seems to defeat the purpose of using Markdown - yes you can export notes as Markdown and in many other formats too, but I’d like to be able to use multiple apps to edit one and the same notes. It seems to me that the notes themselves could easily have been stored as plain text files, with attachments in (perhaps hidden) folders, and then the SQLite database just used for Bear’s specific functionality such as its non-standard tags, search index, etc. (3) All notes are stored in a single monolithic “vault” regardless of whether they pertain to my day job, my personal life, or writing projects outside of work. I would really like to be able to separate out these things - if you want to store everything together as a “second brain” you can, but I prefer to keep things separated by project.

      I’ve had the same reservation with hashtags. Have you tried secondary levels for hashtags. For example, I have #coursework as a main tag. #Coursework/psychotherapy, #coursework/gestalt and #coursework/choicetheory are secondary tags - all housed within #coursework. It’s not perfect for sure but, for me at least, is becoming enjoyable for its simplicity vs. trying to remember what folder I used to file information when I need to find it. Coming from Evernote where folders rule, it’s been a challenge no doubt.

    • @Itachi.Uchiha.Offical

    For just note taking or recoding script snippets, might I suggest Boostnote + (self-hosted) Nextcloud (talking privacy...) or + your preferred cloud solution (seems kinda strange highliting privacy, but keep using iCloud or Gdrive etc.).
    Boostnote has a free option and no account is necessary. The cloud is only necessary for syncing of course and you can use your own cloud, or the boostnote cloud. It is plattform independent (Windows, Mac, Linux, Mobile only with an account and maybe payed version).
    If you don't need the full datbase power of notion and/or customizability of Notion/Obsidian/... then I'd say Boostnote looks a lot like Bear, but is not just Apple only.

    3:57 Yes Evernote has unique set of features, I've been using Evernote for about 10 years now, I've tried different note taking apps but none are meaningful as Evernote.
    With current new version of Evernote I believe its going in right direction to unify the experience.

      I’m with you. Been an Evernote user for about 12 years now. Grew frustrated with it and have looked at so many other apps, but always end up staying with EN because I have so many notes in it and regularly use some of its features to capture, store, search or find content I’ve stored there. Bear is definitely more aesthetic. I really hope EN’s new platform and V10 improves significantly. It’s off to a decent start so far.

Simple is great-the more advanced note apps look intriguing, but I'm the type who will get lost in the sauce. So I should stick with simple (for now). I appreciate the review. Although it did end kind of awkwardly when after singing its praises you were like "*sigh* idk" The other odd thing (for me) is seeing all the markup tags (greyed out, but visible?). I kept thinking that was an editing mode, but as the vid went on, it looked like that was the actual presentation. Seems less "clean," no? Anyway, I'm gonna go try it out. 🙏

    Bear looks cool, I think this would work for me but lack of a windows client is a deal breaker. I use both MacOS and Windows, I definitely need something that supports both platforms. I am a Evernote user now, I have been since 2008, but I am absolutely set up with that product. It hasn’t done any better over the years. Granted they have added features, but it hasn’t gotten better and now they’re raising the price again. It’s no longer worth it for me however, I cannot find a really good replacement. Some apps are far too simple and some absurd way too damn complicated. Bear looks like it would be a good replacement however, I need the windows client. Damn!!! Great video. I love your tone do a wonderful job, explaining the pros and cons and just a general features of Bear. I’ll be definitely checking out some more of your videos. Thanks.

How to order all the mess of tagged notes with no structure ? How to put different tags in a set of several notes? The multiple-words tag is not really a solution...

    • @harshibar

I used to use that too and thought it was more reliable being made from the people who run Wordpress but I had some issues with it some years back and left that app too…but at least with Craft you have the option to sync with their cloud or keep your files stored in json on your iCloud so you won’t really need to back your notes up…they would already be stored on your filing system.

    Why don't you try Click Up? I've seen that there are many channels dedicated only to that app, and I tried to use it myself but is a little difficult for me

    Thank you very much for this amazing information! I ll try definetly out! If they store the notes on the computer like obsidian it’s perfect. Well and lovely down as always! Congrats! Chris

      Awesome, I’m glad you found the video helpful! The only difference is that the files stored on Obsidian are easier to access in your file browser, but they both have the same security benefits.

      @@harshibar , thank you for this important info for me - I use obsidian after notion and love it - but an alternative app just to write and organize the „ private „ stuff is what I am looking for !
      Want to go away from Evernote , which quiet cool but I would like to have all only on the computer and a back up . Thanks again! -
      And the way you do your RUclips videos is amazing , lovely , funny , entertaining and great with good information ! Love it always ! Thanks ! Not the first time you made my day ! 🍀🍀🍀🌹💐💐💐💐💐🌻

    How do you make a recipe-box folder and drink folder inside it not being a #-tags. Inability to nest folders makes this up quite useless for me. But I like the fast editing, so I don't cross Bear yet.

    Could you check out the 'Craft' notes app from Luki Labs? It's fairly new but looks promising 🌟.
    They also have a Slack where you can directly communicate with them for e.g. feature requests or bug reports, and they do updates with new features pretty regularly. I think it's iOS only so far but they're working on a web version.

    • @harshibar
      @harshibar  3 года назад +1

      Yes, I have! I really like it (reviewing it next month), especially since they also rolled out features to improve data ownership and privacy. I’m hoping they integrate databases like Notion in the future so I can switch fully.

      @livininabubble 3 года назад

      @@harshibar Ah great, looking forward to that video 🙌!
      Also same with waiting for db to switch 😄.
      They said in their Slack a few days ago that 'tables' will come in the upcoming months (and tags). But not sure if it will be comparable to Notion databases in the first version. But we'll see 🤞
