- How to make a 3D Unicorn cake!
In this video I'll be showing how to carve out a unicorn shape in the cake, working with rice krispies and creating all the fine details using fondant.

as someone whose done many cakes I'm honestly amazed that the rice krispie portion stayed, especially after adding the weight of the fondant. 😳 I was like oh giiiirl that's gonna fall.

I made this cake for my daughter's 5th Birthday. Turned out pretty good (this video tutorial goes for about 3 and half mins, the making of the cake took me 16hrs 😂). My daughter and her friends loved it! Thanks for putting this up, wish I could attach a pic of my version....

I would like to make this cake too but its too complicated to do this. I know unicorns don't always have beards but for holding up the head a little rainbow goatee would be perfect for hiding a dowel.

Try printing a picture of a horse (side view) and estimate the amount of cake needed accordingly

Thanks! I use a local brand (I live in Israel), I don't think they sell it abroad. But I've heard many good things on Satin Ice and plan on trying it soon :).
what type of cake do you use? Does it have to be dense like pound cake?
When making a cake you're planning to carve it's better to use dense cakes, and generally when working with fondant it's also better use dense cakes which can hold the weight of the fondant without crumbling.
Love this cake. Came across looking for 3D cake as my grand daughter's request for her birthday in Aug is a unicorn cake. And this will be a great help. Just one thing that worries me, how do you keep the head up. I am worried it will fall off before she comes home from school. I subscribe by the way. Thanks

If I had to do it over again I'd make the entire head out of rice krispies and put the vertical support rod right through it - the rice krispies are sturdier than the cake and once they set a little bit it would probably hold its place better. Hope that helps :)

It really depends on the size of the cake you want to make and how much of it will be made of rice krispies - it varies

did you use water to blend your fondant and why? I always though you just needed the heat from your hands,

Thanks! Yes, I used water. It really depends on what you're trying to do - if there are seams that need to be hidden and such water is needed. The heat from your hands will soften the fondant but won't melt it.
